Question 3x and 10x optical zoom cameras in Video mode - Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

Somebody complained some time ago about weird 3x and 10x optical zoom camera behavior.
Can confirm that.
Did a little test and can confirm: most of the time 3x and 10x are used as intended. But sometimes 10x zoom is filmed with 3x optical zoom camera. Could even catch a moment when 3x is covered with finger and camera switches between 3x and 10x (sometimes even 108MP) every 2-3 seconds.
Light, distance, heat - no idea what makes this happen. Tested in different scenarios (mostly bright room) - couldn't notice any pattern.
Another 10 minutes of waisted time for.. internet points and fame

For me when take shot on Photo or Video mode, small 3x zoom sensor shot on 3 and 10x, but when shot on Pro or Pro Video, 3x sensor work only for 3x and 10x sensor work only for 10x zoom.
Depending on how close or far the subject is, the 10x zoom are shot by a different sensor. As soon as I cover the 10x zoom sensor with my finger, it immediately turns on the 10x zoom on the small 3x sensor.

Using the 3x or even using the 1x to do 10x zoom instead of using the actual 10x optical zoom seems to happen for me under a couple of circumstances. 1) Low light, the 3x lens is f/2.4 and the 10x lens is f/4.9; significantly "slower". Sometimes the camera decides that you will be "better off" noise wise by using the shorter optical zooms. 2) The 10x just can't focus. Because of the low light or because you are trying to take a picture of something that is too close for the zoom lens. This can happen in good light if you are trying to take a "macro" shot of something close. Unfortunately there does not seem to be any way to know what the camera system is going to decide what to do.

There is Goodlock module, called Camera Assistant.
There you can turn of automatic switching.

Strange problem with camera

I noticed some strange phenomenon with my Mate 9 camera - it looks like pictures come out blurry if the phone is tilted upwards / downwards after focus has been locked.
Could someone try to reproduce the problem?
The instructions are as follows:
1. set the camera to pro mode and Manual focus.
2. hold the camera normally in portrait position
3. compose with some distant subject in the middle
4. press on the subject to focus on it
5. press the shutter button to take a picture.
6. tilt the camera upwards/downwards (while keeping the subject in the frame). Do not refocus.
7. press the shutter button to take a picture.
In my case, the picture that I get from step 5 is perfectly sharp, while the picture I get from step 7 is very blurry.
It's important not to refocus after step 6. If I refocus at that point, the picture from step 7 comes out fine.
I noticed this accidentally when I tried to take a vertical panorama and saw that the image gets less and less sharp the more I tilt the camera vertically. Example of such result:

Some observations:
1. It doesn't matter if I'm holding the camera in portrait or in landscape mode; Tilting it upwards / downwards after focus was locked makes the output blurry.
2. The more I tilt it, the blurrier the output gets.
3. The problem appears only when the camera is tilted vertically. Tilting it horizontally is fine. So normal panoramas come out OK, but vertical panoramas do not.
4. The problem appears in both Color mode and Monochrome mode (when only 1 camera/lens module is in use). So at least I know that the problem is not related to the optical image stabilizer (that only the color camera has) or to alignment between the two cameras.
5. It is not a narrow depth-of-field issue: the subjects I checked are very far away from the camera, and basically everything should be in focus. Furthermore, the distance between the camera and the subject is held pretty much constant and still - in one picture they come out sharp, while in another, after tilting the camera upwards/downwards, they come out blurry.
Help to reproduce the problem and to understand it will be appreciated.
Tilt Shift
Wow, that photo looks almost like a tilt-shift photo! Not what you were wanting, but pretty cool looking.

Yes I do, but I haven't even thought about trying to mimic tilt shift

Hi, I am facing the same problem, do you have a solution? Is this a software bug or am I doing something wrong?
I this is a bug, I dont understand, why I only find your concern via google...
Even on EMUI9 I have still this blurry vertical panorama issue

Weird camera bug

Hey xda forums, not sure exactly where else I could post this as this seems like a weird software bug.
The problem is the cameras; they are not working as they should. The main lens apparently does not exist, and the cameras are glitched to the point where only the telephoto lens appears on one side (with it having the ultrawide icon and apparent 0.6x magnification when in reality it is using the telephoto lens zoomed in as normal)

}
By pressing the "flip cameras" button, the flipping mechanism does not work. However, the view is flipped 180° and suddenly the ultrawide lens appears! (Disguised as telephoto lens on the app and apparent 3x zoom when it actually is just the ultrawide lens working normally). I would need to manually adjust the flip camera tool to have the camera flip out to me. Also, when taking a picture the app just crashes, and no picture is taken.
The problem also exists in other applications. Snapchat only uses the wide angle lens. However, pressing the flip cameras button does trigger the flip mechanism; a problem here is that the cameras are 180° (upside down).
When using the flashlight feature from the notifications bar, the flashlight turns on and immediately the camera flips, blinding me with the flashlight facing me lol
Anybody have any suggestions on what to do?
Things i noticed before this happened was an error message "The cameras are being used by another application. Please try later". When this message started appearing, all 3 cameras were viewable in the camera app, but when flipping the camera, the app would crash if i tried to flip with the main lens. This lasted for about a week, then the camera app degraded to what I have just described
Things I have tried are:
- Use an alternative camera, such as GCam (won't open, immediately crashes)
- Safe mode
- Factory reset
- Install TWRP and Magisk, advanced wipe and download the ROM off asus website (The ROM which my phone came with as the cameras were working normally for about a month before this happened)
- Install another version of AsusCamera (internet or make backups of system/priv-apps/AsusCamera onto an SD Card and then install)
None of these seem to work. If anyone could help that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Mi 10 Ultra - Camera quality issues

I've had my Mi 10 Ultra, running the xiaomi.eu ROM, for nearly a year or so. I've found the telephoto camera quality to be very good with still subjects, but introduce any kind of motion to the scene, and it is far worse than the Motorola One Zoom I had before.
Here's an example, a slightly cropped photo from the 5x camera, tracking a moving car:

What exactly is going on here? The panel gaps between the doors as well as at the base of the A-pillar have multiplied! Likewise, there's ghosting right by the door handles! My hypothesis is that the camera takes multiple exposures and then haphazardly merges them into one. This makes the camera absolutely useless at photographing anything moving. Hell, I get better quality using stills from a video with the 5x camera than by taking an actual photograph!
So; is there any way to turn this crap off? The photo above is taken in Pro mode with manual settings, and all AI things are turned off already...
Have you tried using the "Pro" mode to set custom shutter speeds yourself?
I find it usually works well, although sometimes I need to turn HDR off to stop the multi-exposure capture if the object is moving too fast.
The attached photo was taken in Pro mode, no HDR.
I don't believe this is an exposure time issue, as parts of the car are sharp, and anyway these flaws look a lot more akin to what you'd find in a poorly stitched panorama. You can also see the pattern on the road surface looks weird, as if it was clone-brushed or something.

You should try gcam. It becomes a real photo camera... Xiaomi processing is very poor compared to Google's.
I have GCam installed, but rarely use it due to the lack of manual settings. Perhaps I'll give it a try with moving subjects, though. Thanks for the idea.
EDIT: tried it, GCam doesn't produce these exposure fusion artefacts at all.

Question S22 Ultra Exynos camera issues, (potentially BIG processing issues aswell?)

I've had my phone for close to a month now my model is (SM-908B/DS) and I have been experiencing an issue that I'm hoping it's just software and it would be fixed next updates and not hardware which is when I'm in a dim light/low light place and I try to take a picture of anything this is pretty much the resulting image:
Indoors Normal Camera:

Indoors 108 MP Camera + Detail enhancer:
Can you guys tell me if this is typical S22 quality in daylight or am I not seeing something here:
Outdoors picture Main Camera:
Outdoors 108 MP daylight + Detail Enhancer:
Same here, white light situations have been improved with the july update but that 108mp shot just doesn't feel like a 108mp shot:
Main Camera white light
108 MP + Detail enhancer white light:
This has been happening since the June update (which is when I got the phone), and the july update made somethings better but overall the problem is still there, camera looks good in daylight/outside but whenever I go in my house where the light is dim or white all pictures look noisy and bad like this and the preview is choppy aswell, here's what I tried so far:
- Clearing cache partition
- Re-optimizing apps
- Factory reset from settings
- Hard factory reset using ODIN
- Updating to the July update and clearing cache which didn't fix my problem
This problem has been going for a while, I didn't seem to care at first because mostly ill want to take pictures outside but I found myself wanting to take pictures inside my home and it's just doesn't feel right anymore, if any of you guys can relate to something similar to my issue lmk down below, I just hope samsung fixes this with software updates :/
There's an article also talking about this issue with Exynos cameras but it was back in april..
Link:
Article
Another problem I found is the camera really acts strange in white light for some reason, this only happened once to me, but it just shows that the camera really needs improvement still on exynos, and most of the time I don't take pictures in white light in my room as they all look fuzzy or have a lot of noise just like the low light/dim light situations:
From the pictures you attached, I can only see, some have 0,8 MP others 108 MP. No Exif data, so the exposure time is not clear and what is the "normal camera" (first picture)?
The subject (dog) usually cannot be captured without motion blur, especially in low light conditions.
For a systematic comparison identical conditions are needed.
Finally, do not expect too much from 108000000 pixels put on a sensor so small. Heavy image processing will not make it better sometimes. But Pixel binning works not bad, just use the far more flexible 12 MP mode. Especially in low light conditions the results are comparatively good.
I got the S22 Ultra from EE on Saturday and the image processing is absolutely dreadful, even on 108MP mode it aint great... I returned my Pixel 6 Pro as I was having constant issues with the software and and I'm honestly about to just go back to it. I hope this along with other issues with the Exynos chip can be fixed with software updates.

General (Update) 12S Ultra doesn't use main sensor at 3rd party apps

As you know, 12S Ultra has 3 camera sensors on the back.
The main sensor is IMX989, which is known as 1-inch sensor and it has best quality.
For ultra-wide and telephoto, it uses 1/2" IMX586.
When using default (Xiaomi) camera app, it uses IMX989 for wide, IMX 586 for ultra wide, telephoto, and macro.
This is normal. Nothing to be special.
But the problem starts when you're using 3rd party applications.
If application uses Android standard camera API, they will not utilize the main sensor.
Instead of a huge 1-inch IMX989, they will use IMX586 on the ultra wide.
You will get normal wide focal length (NOT ultra wide), but It will be noisier, less dynamic range, less resolution.
Maybe ultra wide sensor has two mode - full sensor readout for ultra wide, and pixel binning/cropping for macro and normal focal length.
This can be disappointment for some people, and huge minus for some nerdy professionals who using 3rd party apps like Filmic Pro.
You can test this by blocking MIDDLE lens on the back.
As far as I checked, Lightroom, Instagram, MotionCam, was not able to use Main sensor.
UPDATE : after clean installation of MIUI 13.0.7 with factory reset, problems are now fixed.

Thit is very weird, so I put it to the test.
The above apps you are saying you tried are working fine with the main sensor on mine phone.
I tried few more camera apps and they all use the main sensor too.
13.0.7 stable
I do confirm using main sensor on Lightroom.
However on lightroom it has only two camera modes, rear and front facing, and when you use the rear mode it first uses main sensor but when you are close to an object or you cover the laser sensor at the top, it automatically switches to ultrawide for macro.
version 13.0.7
Okay. I made factory reset / clean installation with MIUI 13.0.7 and its fixed now.
Maybe it was an bug on MIUI 13.0.4 or temporal error.
Thanks for checking.

yeah update note for 13.0.7 includes camera stuff, perhaps it included a fix to that problem in 13.0.4
well I'm glad it works for you now!
Have you tested motioncam / mcpro24fps? Are all sensors available, and what are the possible resolutions / framerates?
Considering a 12s Pro if the compatibility is there.
I‘ve tested MotionCam 4K at 30fps, 24fps. Only main sensor works.
But system will auto switch to macro (ultra-wide sensor) when you focus to close objects.
