Xiaomi launched poco. It marketed it as a developer friendly device. And then it decided to give the device to some devs.
Who did they give it to? People who had previously worked on Xiaomi phones.
And so it happened. Vasishath, shahah_mik and akhilnarang got it. They definitely deserved it.
But with this Note 5 Pro is utterly f****d. Original development has almost completely stopped. Vasishath and shahah_mik brought up LOS and device trees for RN5 and now all they care about is poco.
Go check AOSIP Pie thread. Till 4th October, Akhilnarang was actively working on Pie for RN5 Pro. Now its over. Only derp kernel updates.
Maybe I'm ignorant but only jhenrique seems to be doing original development. Most others are pumping out xyz rom based on same source with same bugs.
I feel so bad. These devs definitely deserved a great phone but it came at the cost of Note 5 Pro. I don't think we will ever get proper Q roms and leave alone that, I don't think we'll ever get fully stable Pie roms like Oreo roms are stable right now.
RN3 launched with 5.1 and got super stable Nougat and Oreo. We started with Oreo and will remain on super stable Oreo custom roms. Other version roms have low chances of being as stable as Oreo.
I urge some developers to pick up LineageOs for this device. "Super glide butter flow remix" rom is nice but first we should have proper Pie code. Otherwise all roms will have similar bugs.
No offense to anybody.
I'm happy to be corrected.
Besides jhenrique, are there any devs doing Original development for Note 5 Pro?
Firstly what pie bugs are you talking about?
And secondly, we have so many hard working devs here making kernels, recoveries and ROMs. New updates every day, join the telegram group...
in the ever changing competitive market! there are always newer models to replace older ones! but the problem is, now the frequency of happening such is very high!
anyways even before poco! RN5 roms on 8.1 are fruit from same tree and i found many similar bugs after trying 10 different roms!
1. all have whatsapp behaviour issues (low call volume / voice notes screen offs )
2. random ui crashing on derp kernels when trying ending call
3. random restarts when whatsapp tries wakesup screen as you move away your device from ear! (proximity sensor)
4. poor BT Audio and noise
5. switching between 4g/3g (airplane mode on/off) fails to register sims to network (specially on crdroid roms on derp kernel)
6. touchwiz goes non responsive and nothing works accept navbar on , unless you switch off and on screen. (RR and crdroid)
7. Equiliser works ONLY if its activated before music player,
i havent tested custom rom of pie but i am sure i will find many bugs!
so what is my point?
that even if poco wasnt released! these inherited (verson to version of various custom roms) issues were never fixed! and i never expect them to be fixed!

You underestimate the power of good devs. Most of these bugs would have been fixed if major devs had continued to work on our device.
They brought up the tree from scratch and literally fixed so many bugs that users reported. If you don't feel like reading xda threads, go watch rom videos of AOSIP etc on youtube from the march/April month. You'll see that they had so many little and big bugs. All of them were fixed slowly and steadily.
So i dont see your point. Devs and their enthusiasm matters a lot. You wouldn't have a single rom running on your phone if devices trees had not been brought up. And then if they had, you wouldn't be using custom roms because of major bugs that they had in April/May. All the bugs that you report are minor and I'm not even facing a single one of them. Oreo is daily driver material because of the months of original development that was put into it by several devs.
Some of the more famous developers got a Poco device and are now spending time with it.
Some other newcomers have come up and launched ROMs in the last 2 weeks or so. That's a chance. Finally, a roadmap to some change.

You've never had an abandoned device.
Delevoping and modding on our Redmi Note 5 is good enough, just open Redmi 4 Pro's Thread, a 100% valid phone with some high specs (launched 2 years ago), abandoned, why? Redmi Note 4 was released like 1 month later, before Redmi 4 Pro was a best-seller, after few months production of that phone was stopped, no official ROMs with regular support (i can remember like 2/3 developers), now it has two Pie ROMs, it's not enough? Abandoned from Xiaomi with Android 6.0 (it has the same specs of Redmi Note 4), bugs never fixed and zero consideration from main developers (just minor and REALLY GOOD developers helped users with that phone), on Redmi Note 5 you have official Pie ROMs, official LineageOS with weekly update, you will have (i think and i really hope for Xiaomi Image) official Android Pie Update, what else?, i think it's really enough

there's some updates in telegram that never got to xda. telegram is the worst thing ever happened to xda community. tons of useful discussion buried under trollish and useless questions because of the lack of regulations, probably never again to be found. and if the group ever gets deleted, everything would be gone for good.
In telegram, questions are not allways replyed because it seem theres no devs. I think guys are compiling roms and this is all, if it is a bug in a rom, no one is able to solve it when you ask about the problem.
There s only 3 fully working roms i have tested ( LOS 15.1, PIE experience and MIUI ), the rest is a simple patch of these 3 roms and only upgrades are bugs.
I fully agreed with 1emrys1 post.
I'm considering to learn about developing a rom. Anyone know where to start? Because you can really depend on yourself

Gotta agree on that
Telegram could be used to obtain feedback for some ROM, kernel or mod quickly, but as it is an instant messaging app, and people really lack any sense or knowledge about proper issue report (info on flashing procedure, current setup, methods to reproduce and logs) it just becomes a complete useless mess where important information is easily lost. Here, at least you can properly search for something and people's tendency to post something might be lower than on IM apps.
I would argue that the development for our device is gone, because there are still devs who are working on it, it might be just slower than usual but not necessarily worse.
On another note, the user base has to be more disciplined and just a bit more educated on how each one of us can contribute to a better development. Posting irrelevant and repetitive crap like fix this pls, this not works, give me links can iritate devs and drive them off, not to make them use another device, but to avoid posting their work with others.
Biggest fail on forums today, and I'm starting to see that all around XDA, is lack of respect for another user/dev/modder/contributor. People do not use the search function, which is the first and most important rule here, do not read the OP and features/bugs section, do not post proper issue report, and demand this or that, and the worst thing is when you point a finger at them and say - you are wrong that's not the way we do things here, they either don't (or pretend) understand and come back at you with insults behaving like they own this place.
EDIT: And there we go, just as I've posted this, someone made a thread in development section asking for kernAl with some features. Just the other day, a dude made a thread in the development section about Arnova's GCam (there is already "official/main" one in Themes and Apps) saying that this works on his device and something else doesn't etc.
I mean, I understand, not everyone has the knowledge about everything, but come one if you come to know about XDA you need to be at least informed about basics.
I was just checking out various customs threads & twitters and saw that DU had added Bonito to its official page as well as a screenshot on Twitter.

I have mixed feelings. I rooted all 45 different Android phones I owned prior to my last 3 (essential, OnePlus 6, and more pixel 3A). I feel like these days there are way fewer reasons to use custom roms. Base Android has gotten really good, stock roms (for companies like OnePlus and essential) are stable and add lots of useful features, and the good manufacturers are doing updates multiple times a month anyways. We don't see crazy innovation like we did back in old paranoid Android days with projects like Halo and pie controls. And a lot of the real kernel developers like sultanxda moved on to other non-Android projects. It's a shame, but it helped push Google and it's partners into making better software. God knows how many features Google copied from custom roms. Kind of makes you wonder where we'll go from here now that roms are less of a necessity.
Yeah, I was on Android from day one and had been flashing the old windows phone before that. I've stopped installing roms on the last few phones however because I perceive them as worse than the stock software. I came here from a 6T which had a fair few ROMs but none that had the fingerprint sensor working correctly. I want that fingerprint sensor. There are other things but that's the idea, I used to see roms as a proposition where I gave up a few things but gained more than I lost. Now I don't see myself gaining much of anything that I'm not getting with a quick trip into Magisk with everything still working, but I do see things like that lost fingerprint sensor. It's kind of sad to me in a way because it was a bit like a hobby.

I agree with you. I haven't rooted my past 4 (6, 6p, pixel xl, pixel 2 xl) probably bc they all ran "pure Google."
I do also have a note 9 att variant and I wanted to root and install custom on that device the 2nd day in.
But to have options is always a good thing. Keep it up devs!!!

I can't get excited because I tried to figure out what features this rom has that would entice me to get into unlocking/etc and I can't find any sort of place where they actually tell you why you should install their mod. Their website still lists g+, to give an idea of how good their user communication is.
Is there any way I can get hotspot to work without having to use a custom rom
With magisk and Xposed, ROMs just aren't as necessary to me as they used to be, especially now that Google has made a good bit of functionality Pixel-only that isn't always replicated as well in ROMs.
There are still plenty of folks looking forward to them though, so this is definitely good news!
I stopped using custom roms when Marshmallow came out.
But I still use EX for the kernel..

Yes, there's a build prop mod that pretty well known and works on any phone. Unfortunately you need an unlocked bootloader and root so no OTAs and you'll have to keep magisk updated to keep safety net working (it gets updated pretty often)
Heck I dont know why anyone would not want a custom rom. More options and features. Yeah stock has gone far these days but I will always welcome more development.
I can totally understand why people feel there isn't a need for root access or custom ROMs anymore. Stock has certainly improved a lot. I find it useful for a few things, though:
Limiting battery charge to 80% so it prolongs the life of my battery. It's important in a world where you can no longer change batteries with ease.
Swapping my back button on the nav bar to the right side
De-Googling my phone, i.e. installing LineageOS without GApps.
Hold on just a sec, for my part I didn't say anything about root, that's a must have for me. I also didn't say that I don't welcome the development, just that it probably wont be for me. Despite that I'm always glad to see it happen whether it is applicable to my use case or not. I certainly didn't mean to imply or say that ROM development is bad, I apologize if that was the connotation people got from my posts.

I would think that would be the case - especially given the massive availability in North America alone. (I had a Galaxy Nexus and ran DU on it starting with Marshmallow and through Nougat - DU on a Pixel 3a XL would be - literally - Old Home Week and a good thing.) The ONLY reason I'm not running DU *now* is that I left the GNex for the Galaxy S7 Snapdragon - and not long after, the GNex croaked - it's now a paperweight.
If anything, the Pixel could be bigger than the Nexus line *ever* got to be - here is why:
1. First off, it can go to any carrier in North America - it's not restricted to Verizon Wireless.
2. Wide retail availablility - online my foot! I don't HATE online - I just prefer retail for things like phones (and that is despite being in the front yard of Amazon HQ2). And that is just the availability end.
3. Sane pricing - even, if not especially, in retail. ($479USD - as I stated before, that is the 3a XL - *half* the price of the S10e.) The S10e is pricier than the Note 9 - which is bad enough; to have the 3a XL undercut the same S10e by that much? Why would - or should- I buy an S10e? (And I don't hate the S10e - before the 3a and 3a XL came along, I was seriously considering the S10e, and I had actually seen it in retail and gotten some hands-on time with one - I haven't been able to do that with the 3a XL yet.)

Hi, since last week I am a new Oneplus 7 Pro owner
Please don't hit me, but I have a question that is very... unpopular. But you must understand that you cannot join every single telegram group to ask the following question:
Tastes are different (luckily), but what is the most 'common' setup in general after bootloader unlock (regarding ROM/kernel/tweaks)?
I've been watching the threads here for a few days and have analyzed that the following combination is popular and stable:
Openbeta 11 ROM + Smurf Kernel + xXx NoLimits magisk + disabled Oneplus logging/zen
Is my impression correct?
Thx in advance
All those roms and tweaks have threads dedicated to them. There is nothing new to ask, just read up. There is no common thing or we 2ouldnt have a ton of choices.
Trail and error is part of the fun/

Kobo - that is a popular setup indeed. This phone is amazing if you don't add a thing. But us members of xda always want a bit more ram or speed or settings, and XXX will give you that as well as Renovate Ice.
I have the smurf kernel installed without touching a thing, and simply by reading what it does, I believe that my phone is running smoother or better or corona-free. Is it really? Who knows since it's an awesome phone irregardless of what you do to it.
So yes, try different roms and experiment. I assume that you have a lot of free time now, like most of us..

My screen tint is constantly changing depending on the outside luminosity ( blacks shifting to a washed out grey when the sun is shining on the device or I'm in a brightly lit room ). I've searched for hours for a way to disable this behaviour but without any luck (thought it was because of my custom kernel but it happens on stock too).
Any ideas ?
Still have not found any solutions, am I the only one having this issue ?
Thats what xiaomi had called a "sunlight display" its a ROM feature offered by miui... Idk for oxygen os but that too would be ROM's feature.

I'm on stock ROM, and back to stock kernel ( not even magisk ), so I really don't understand why this is happening.
I´m not seeing anything of this. I have never rooted or unlocked BL and have followed the official firmware updates since I got the phone a couple of months ago. I have always actively searched for updates under the settings and now it is the European version 10.5.9.IN21BA for the OP8 model IN2013.
Hi everyone. I recently flashed a new ROM on this device trying to escape from the overheating, I was expecting a proper camera app but I only found bugs.
I tried Pixel Cam V1.1, I used it on MIUI and it was great but on RROS it became unusable.
Gcam MGC 8.1 by BSG worked but it only recognizes one sensor of 8mpx.
Also the UltraCVM UltraCam but it has so many bugs with lights that is unusable.
The chosen one was Tiger Camera Xmas release, it's almost perfect but trying panorama mode makes it unusable, fortunately the 2x and more are stable.
But I ask for someone that probably have tried another apps or xml config files.
I am considering install the MIUI stock camera from ANX but the POCO X3 isn't listed as compatible device and I don't want to root my phone to be honest. But if someone know about one functional version I will apply it as last resource.
I'm opening this thread to know your opinion, I researched on Gcam thread but it has too many versions that I've tried. I really liked all the sensors and the 64mpx so I need to find an app that takes me closer to use the full camera experience.
FYI, there a whole thread dedicated to Cams at https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/4164397/.
