Hello XDA,
I have some questions for you which I would appreciate the utmost if you could answer and explain them to me!
So, I am a OnePlus Two owner and have been for the past year an unconditional OnePlus fan and of course, client. However, I have been told Xiaomi MI’s line is quite solid and the reason I don’t hear much fuss about it is because I live in Portugal and as far as I have understood, Xiaomi is just focusing on their Big Chinese market and leaving the international markets without their influence, yet.
However, as an Android big big enthusiast, I have been in the ROM and in the Root indispensable world and I am just loving it.
Getting quicker to the point, I am really excited about the Xiaomi Mi5 launch and about it’s possible chip, Snapdragon 820, that was announced today! What a flaming dragon it is!
I really didn’t know anything special about Xiaomi as a company so I went to a store here in Portugal’s capital, Lisbon, which sells some of their products and asked some questions about it. I was impressed on how well he talked about the overall quality regarding their products.
I am considering buying one if it meets the Flagship real “killer” specs it is rumoured to have. However, after watching and reading some reviews about it, I am just not happy about their too Chinese and Apple-like UI, MIUI. Not even a launcher could save that awful UI (sorry for those of you who like it, I really respect it)!
So here are the questions that I would really really love to see clarified as there is some lack of information on the internet about it (with OnePlus there’s no chance I would need to create a thread asking questions like the ones I’m asking you below):
1. Can I flash CyanogenMod in a MI’s Smartphone? I know the answer is Yes! However, how and why does it differentiate from the process for example, with the flashing on a OnePlus device?
2. From the question above I ask specifically: Before flashing via fastboot TWRP, how come don’t I need to unlock the bootloader? What am I missing?
3. After being able to install CyanogenMod in my Xiaomi, can I install Xposed? Could it be Rovo89’s official 64 bit Xposed ? Or another one? (This because I know xposed with MIUI has to be something special,but I’m asking, after installing CM)
4. How is the rooting process? From what I've seen in multiple threads, No SuperSU is needed. How come? How will I give root permissions for each app the way I'm used to without SuperSU? (everywhere it says you need only to go to dev options and activate the option:" Root Access: Just apps").
5. If I manage to do both things above, will I have, let’s say, an experience like the one I have with my Oneplus device with a smartphone with better specs (Xiaomi MI5) ? Or I will have some problems in terms of compatibility?

1)If there is official/unofficial CM support for a certain "mi" device like the mi3 or the mi4 then you'll most likely be able to flash it like any other custom roms. And I am pretty sure there will be CM support(official or unofficial) for the upcoming Mi5.*
2)I am not sure if MI devices come with unlocked bootloader, but I was able to flash twrp by booting into the bootloader and then flashing the recovery through fastboot commands. So I assume it's unlocked by default.
3)For Miui there's a modified xposed called "wsm" tools. Though you can run xposed fine as well. (From my experience) And if you flash CM then you'll be able to use the xposed version that is working for that CM rom.*
4)Well there are two versions of Miui rom. Stable and Developer version. The developer version comes pre rooted and can give root permission to apps from the security app. Though you'll be able to flash SuperSU as well through twrp and SuperSU is actually more easier to use in my experience.
5)You mean flashing CM and using Xposed? That's actually uncertain. Compatibility issues such as crappy camera or poor sound quality might arise. You can't be sure about that.*

Thanks mate! I am more clarified now. So, I should stay in OnePlus right? I would only go to Xiaomi if I had the same easy and accessible flashing process with the Xiaomi as I have with the OnePlus 2.. I mean, the afterstory. I really want stock Android and for that the best will be CM13 at the time probably, doesn't matter, could be CM12 too. But if doing it may encounter me some major bugs I think it's not worth the hassle of selling my phone to by another one for now.
As I have said, it's uncertain. You may or may not face serious bugs. And stock camera almost always performs better than a custom Rom. But sooner or later, a stable version or one with the least amount of bugs will be released. For example some of the custom Rom solution for the Mi4 are rock stable now and they're all aosp based.

Xiaomi launched poco. It marketed it as a developer friendly device. And then it decided to give the device to some devs.
Who did they give it to? People who had previously worked on Xiaomi phones.
And so it happened. Vasishath, shahah_mik and akhilnarang got it. They definitely deserved it.
But with this Note 5 Pro is utterly f****d. Original development has almost completely stopped. Vasishath and shahah_mik brought up LOS and device trees for RN5 and now all they care about is poco.
Go check AOSIP Pie thread. Till 4th October, Akhilnarang was actively working on Pie for RN5 Pro. Now its over. Only derp kernel updates.
Maybe I'm ignorant but only jhenrique seems to be doing original development. Most others are pumping out xyz rom based on same source with same bugs.
I feel so bad. These devs definitely deserved a great phone but it came at the cost of Note 5 Pro. I don't think we will ever get proper Q roms and leave alone that, I don't think we'll ever get fully stable Pie roms like Oreo roms are stable right now.
RN3 launched with 5.1 and got super stable Nougat and Oreo. We started with Oreo and will remain on super stable Oreo custom roms. Other version roms have low chances of being as stable as Oreo.
I urge some developers to pick up LineageOs for this device. "Super glide butter flow remix" rom is nice but first we should have proper Pie code. Otherwise all roms will have similar bugs.

And secondly, we have so many hard working devs here making kernels, recoveries and ROMs. New updates every day, join the telegram group...
in the ever changing competitive market! there are always newer models to replace older ones! but the problem is, now the frequency of happening such is very high!
anyways even before poco! RN5 roms on 8.1 are fruit from same tree and i found many similar bugs after trying 10 different roms!
1. all have whatsapp behaviour issues (low call volume / voice notes screen offs )
2. random ui crashing on derp kernels when trying ending call
3. random restarts when whatsapp tries wakesup screen as you move away your device from ear! (proximity sensor)
4. poor BT Audio and noise
5. switching between 4g/3g (airplane mode on/off) fails to register sims to network (specially on crdroid roms on derp kernel)
6. touchwiz goes non responsive and nothing works accept navbar on , unless you switch off and on screen. (RR and crdroid)
7. Equiliser works ONLY if its activated before music player,
i havent tested custom rom of pie but i am sure i will find many bugs!

You underestimate the power of good devs. Most of these bugs would have been fixed if major devs had continued to work on our device.
They brought up the tree from scratch and literally fixed so many bugs that users reported. If you don't feel like reading xda threads, go watch rom videos of AOSIP etc on youtube from the march/April month. You'll see that they had so many little and big bugs. All of them were fixed slowly and steadily.
So i dont see your point. Devs and their enthusiasm matters a lot. You wouldn't have a single rom running on your phone if devices trees had not been brought up. And then if they had, you wouldn't be using custom roms because of major bugs that they had in April/May. All the bugs that you report are minor and I'm not even facing a single one of them. Oreo is daily driver material because of the months of original development that was put into it by several devs.
Some of the more famous developers got a Poco device and are now spending time with it.
Some other newcomers have come up and launched ROMs in the last 2 weeks or so. That's a chance. Finally, a roadmap to some change.

You've never had an abandoned device.
Delevoping and modding on our Redmi Note 5 is good enough, just open Redmi 4 Pro's Thread, a 100% valid phone with some high specs (launched 2 years ago), abandoned, why? Redmi Note 4 was released like 1 month later, before Redmi 4 Pro was a best-seller, after few months production of that phone was stopped, no official ROMs with regular support (i can remember like 2/3 developers), now it has two Pie ROMs, it's not enough? Abandoned from Xiaomi with Android 6.0 (it has the same specs of Redmi Note 4), bugs never fixed and zero consideration from main developers (just minor and REALLY GOOD developers helped users with that phone), on Redmi Note 5 you have official Pie ROMs, official LineageOS with weekly update, you will have (i think and i really hope for Xiaomi Image) official Android Pie Update, what else?, i think it's really enough

like most samsung devices redmi note 5 pro I way better than samsung devices with the exception maybe being the S5 or S3
there's some updates in telegram that never got to xda. telegram is the worst thing ever happened to xda community. tons of useful discussion buried under trollish and useless questions because of the lack of regulations, probably never again to be found. and if the group ever gets deleted, everything would be gone for good.
In telegram, questions are not allways replyed because it seem theres no devs. I think guys are compiling roms and this is all, if it is a bug in a rom, no one is able to solve it when you ask about the problem.
There s only 3 fully working roms i have tested ( LOS 15.1, PIE experience and MIUI ), the rest is a simple patch of these 3 roms and only upgrades are bugs.

I'm considering to learn about developing a rom. Anyone know where to start? Because you can really depend on yourself

Gotta agree on that
Telegram could be used to obtain feedback for some ROM, kernel or mod quickly, but as it is an instant messaging app, and people really lack any sense or knowledge about proper issue report (info on flashing procedure, current setup, methods to reproduce and logs) it just becomes a complete useless mess where important information is easily lost. Here, at least you can properly search for something and people's tendency to post something might be lower than on IM apps.
I would argue that the development for our device is gone, because there are still devs who are working on it, it might be just slower than usual but not necessarily worse.
On another note, the user base has to be more disciplined and just a bit more educated on how each one of us can contribute to a better development. Posting irrelevant and repetitive crap like fix this pls, this not works, give me links can iritate devs and drive them off, not to make them use another device, but to avoid posting their work with others.
Biggest fail on forums today, and I'm starting to see that all around XDA, is lack of respect for another user/dev/modder/contributor. People do not use the search function, which is the first and most important rule here, do not read the OP and features/bugs section, do not post proper issue report, and demand this or that, and the worst thing is when you point a finger at them and say - you are wrong that's not the way we do things here, they either don't (or pretend) understand and come back at you with insults behaving like they own this place.
EDIT: And there we go, just as I've posted this, someone made a thread in development section asking for kernAl with some features. Just the other day, a dude made a thread in the development section about Arnova's GCam (there is already "official/main" one in Themes and Apps) saying that this works on his device and something else doesn't etc.
I mean, I understand, not everyone has the knowledge about everything, but come one if you come to know about XDA you need to be at least informed about basics.

I own the Surya Version of the X3 NFC for over 6months now. I am not satisfied with stock MIUI 12.0.8 and I am searching for a better ROM. Before writing what kind of ROM I am looking for, I ll write down some things about the past.
I was using for 3 years the Xiaomi Mi A1 using Pixel Experience custom rom and found to be the best overall for my needs. I tried also some clean AOSP Android Ones which were faster but had serious bugs. So Pixel Experience on my past Xiaomi mobile device was very balanced overall and was happy with it.
I see there is a thread for PE and PE plus for our X3 and I am reading these days the thread carefully.
What I am looking from a rom:
Less possible bugs,
Compatibility with security apps for banking financial purposes, authorization etc.
Lightweight in resources.
The cleaner the better for me. I am experienced and I can install everything myself including Magisk modules and stuff. I will stick with stock kernel or change to another one only if there is proof to be bug free and not messing with the device performance-compatibility-battery life.
Best camera app is a must but I am sure I will find a better one (google cam) than the stock I have right now. (feel free to make suggestions)
Right now I just made the Mi account and I am waiting the 168hours for the unlocking. So no hurry to find the best answers. I have 1 week to decide.
Do I flash the PE, PE plus or another rom?

Having had my Poco X3 since launch, I have now tried Xiaomi.eu (stock based), ArrowOS and am currently on Resurrection Remix,(v8.6.9, A10 based), and I'd advise you to stick to what you know best (the Pixel variants, some of which are quite well regarded) but also to not get your hopes very high.
From reading the forums for as much as long, my opinion is although the hardware specs are great, no custom ROM is completely without issues -- or maybe I'm just spoiled from past experiences, where I had no troubles worth mentioning setting up and using them as daily drivers.
Cameras on this device, for instance, are by itself a whole field of research.
If simplicity is what you seek, than most folks here will point you towards ArrowOS or LineageOS.

What would you think about ArrowOS disadvantages from the time you used it? Stock kernel or something else?

From my usage, I had trouble setting up some rather basic options but, as it was a while ago, I don't have too clear a recollection.
Afterwards, ArrowOS switched to A11 firmware first and then an OSS vendor, which resulted in a seemingly never ending stream of complaints about upgrades, lack of features and degraded performance -- myself, I never experienced this because I had already moved on.
The migration to OSS vendor happened 2-4 years earlier than necessary, thats what (issues) you get when you do not wait for xiaomi to fix the issues and you try to fix them yourself.
I am still on the last non-OSS build cause of that untill they fix all the issues

I'm using OSS vendor and have no problems.
Which issues are you talking about?
The ones reported on the ArrowOS thread.
Some users report worse performance and some issues here and there.
Also they seem to discontinue smart charging cause of an issue with it.
Personally i am on the latest non-OSS build cause:
A) i do not wish to format the phone and start from scratch again.
B) above reported issues.

also I was unable to find the non-OSS build. where are these variants? I see only vanilla and gapps.

You may as well flash the 20210608 OSS build and stick with it.

That's something you will have to do anyway sooner or later. There is no way from non-OSS to a current build.

FYI, just now in the ArrowOS thread, atefbeldi and CherryFarmer8 complained of some serious problems with recent updates (cf. https://forum.xda-developers.com/posts/85337817 and following).

They are complaining about a problem with Magisk. atefbeldi specifically writes that the problem only occurs after installing Magisk. Without Magisk there is no issue
Was curious what builds/ mods work best on these. Im Waiting on my unlock token but the only I need doordash and Uber to work and mostly wanted to get v4A back on a device and keep access to 5g. I've read over a lot but this is my first unlocked bootloader In a few years. If you have a favorite setup and are willing to share I'd love to hear,

Doubt this is what you are looking for, but so far I am sticking with stock OOS but with magisk installed and assorted modules such as the debloat module, busybox, and liboemcrypto. The reason for this is because so far this is not a very flashing-friendly device, without a real TWRP out for safety. I have tried EvolutionX which is really nice and I've loved it for a while, expecially on my older OnePlus devices, but it is not able to fully utilize the device's capabilities. Don't get me wrong, it is daily driver material and I do appreciate greatly the work that went into it and continually goes into it, but for my personal preferences unless there is a rom that is fully working with only minor issues (by my standards) I am not too keen on sticking with it; I love OOS cam and the quality with things like snapchat, and the speed of unlocking. Both seem small but because I interface with so many small things they become big things for me if that makes any sense. If you do try other roms though, I have found that it is not easy to get back to stock if you change your mind. EvoX, Havoc, Color OS, and maybe PA are your only options for daily driving for most people afaik so if you really wanna spend time with the device then you can try them out, in that order. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong though.
I dont know why you say its not a flash friendly device. I got the LE2110 Chinese model, and ive flashed every ROM available for this device, I had every problem possible happen(due to my choices) typing wrong codes or flashing wrong model software. EDL bootloop all kinds of ****.
This devices is amazing for flashing, just must follow directions exactly. Most roms you must flash copy-partitions first.
I would stock OOS with magisk runs the best for me as far gaming, cause I play PuBG Mobile heavy, but the latest rom available, HaVoC is ****ing sick. I would go with that one..

I've decided to try out a custom ROM, not because I hate OxygenOS11 but just looking for a new experience. Once I got the phone I upgraded immediately to Android 11 but then I saw (and still see) a lot of people swearing by OxygenOS Android 10. Is it worth it to downgrade? What would I lose from V11?
And my main question is for those who tried them, which custom ROM is best for you and why?

I've used Oxygen OS for like 6 months after I got the Nord. Then I moved to Pixel Experience Plus based on A11. Worked fine, but it is discontinued now and they have started with A12. Used it for a while, everything worked fine, some minor bluetooth issues (not sure why), small bugs which you won't notice initially and they aren't a deal breaker.
Now I've switched to Proton KnockOff ROM, everything is fine. Minor UI jitters while locking sometimes. No major bugs faced so far. Also tried Project Radiant Unofficial Build (works fine though).
My final thoughts:
If you want clean pixel phone feel and no customization then Pixel Experience A12 is the way to go.
Plus, this ROM has OTA updates enabled.
If you want some customization and overall good performance and you don't mind unofficial builds then Project Radiant is worth trying.
If you want good performance and tons of customization then I'd say Proton will be a good idea.
NOTE: All the ROMs above are A12 based, I used them without root and the same Kernel it came shipped with.
Try different GCams because some of them lag and even crash many a times, I'd say go with BSG GCam or Urnyx05.
