Hi all, starting a thread to share my experience with ‘downgrading’ to a dumbphone, it was almost so good (would have been perfect!!), but just falling sadly short in some important areas. I’m sharing the tricks and workarounds I used to in a bid to get the phone working in a satisfactory manner, if that is a help to anyone out there, would be great to hear other peoples experiences and some more opinions on resolutions.
Quick summary of topics covered in this post:
Aggressive power management.
No screen wake for notifications.
T9 keypad support lacking.
Assisted dialing
Notification sound.
Using an ‘unlocked’ version from AliExpress (thread here) and trying to avoid rooting, flashing etc, just trying to work with it as-is:

I’ve been using this phone for about 1.5 weeks as a daily driver, have very happily and comfortably slipped back into T9 texting and I must admit that I’m quite enamored by this little cutie of a device. Its so adorable! Hardware wise, really happy with it – I like the screen, the feel of the keys, the battery life is good enough. Sadly a few things are detracting from the overall experience which I’d also like to share for those having a think about it… I’m still going to push on using it for now
1) Aggressive power management.
The OS is ignoring settings to ‘not optimise’ battery for certain processes, resulting in them still getting killed. This renders any regular 3rd party apps and daily updating home screen widgets unusable for ongoing use.
2) No screen wake for notifications.
I worked around this by using a cool app called ‘Glimpse Notifications’, which was perfect, however the aforementioned power management issue kills the process a few hours later, despite the app itself having a ‘persistent’ mode. There is a persistent mode also present in DAVx5 (which I use for contact and calendar sync) and it does work for that particular app.
Once the process is killed, the functionality stops:
3) T9 keypad support lacking.
English T9 support is not usable out of the box, however this can be quickly worked around with a fork of Traditional T9, with a custom keymap (credit to this post which I took from). Taking us straight back to the good old Nokia days. Archived apk build is found at this Wayback Machine link. Props to the author of T9 and the thread author.
(EDIT: See next post for an update to this section) However we quickly run into a usability problem here: If the text entry field in the app or website you are using does not have a “search” / “done” button then you will get stuck without being able to send the text off to perform the search or whatever it is you wanted to to do - as Traditional T9 does not have the functionality to do that (like regular soft keyboards do, with that magnifying glass/tick button to ‘hit enter’ as such). From some searching I think the technical term for the ‘done’ operation is IME_ACTION_DONE. Mapping a key in Traditional T9 for key codes 84 (search) and 66 (enter) does not work to do the required work that this button does on regular soft keyboards:
4) Assisted dialing
This is a common complaint, numbers that are stored in the contact list with +61 prefix will not get matched up to the contact name – when calls are received in local format ie: starting with 0 instead of +61. I worked around this by using an app called PrefixEditor, and it went through my contact list, replacing any +61 prefixes with 0.
Be aware that the same issue comes up when you the proceed to SMS someone using your newly edited ‘0’ prefix number, when they reply it will come from the +61 prefix, so then your very first text message will be orphaned, and the rest of the messages will be under their own thread from then onward.
5) Occasionally no sounds for notifications
(I have custom sounds, I’ve only noticed this issue in the last 24 hours, so am still fleshing that one out)
EDIT: Suspect it had something to do with misbehaving Glimpse Notifications.
While I’ve already spent quite some time trying to resolve these issues, I’ve tried to make peace with some of them in order to keep using it, as I do really like the phone. I’m going to push on for the moment and see if I don’t get too sick of putting up with them. Will post any updates as I go, and would welcome any advice… Thanks everyone.
After having a brief play with another T9 keyboard (https://github.com/AshiVered/QinBoard-T9 - which is unable to go into 'ab' mode, which I need at times) I stumbled into the realization that Traditional T9 in its default state (with no custom keymap) DOES perform the 'done' function when hash (#) is long pressed. Once a custom keymap is in place, long presses no longer work. I have attached my modified version of the keymap, which basically does the following:
These are in their default states:
* = change between En/en/EN
* (long press) = insert smiley
# (or 0) = space
# (long press) = done/enter
dpad up/down = cycle through word suggestions
1 = punctuation
Q (left button) = change between en/ab/12
Back (right button) = delete
Call = add new word (when prediction does not recognize the key combination)
An update about widgets, it seems that some widgets are happily updating and some aren't. So it must come down to how they are coded I guess. I moved from an Android 7 device to this (Android 11), so I guess the world has changed a bit since then, from what I hear apparently widgets are getting to be an increasingly difficult task for Android. I really like using widgets, so its a bit frustrating that I can't get them all to tick over happily.
An update after a few months of use (and still in use) as my daily driver....
The quality/durability of the keypad is not great, having issues with missing keypresses, which is really hurting the experience. This is the number 1 problem. Biggest culprit is the 7 key and the dial key.
The assisted dialing issue (as mentioned in the 1st post - the double SMS thread symptom) is a bit annoying, the built in SMS app does not allow searching, which means that if you 'create new' message, using the number in your phone book, your message will go to the 'orphaned' thread and the replies will come through in the +61 prefix number thread. So you have to scroll (sometimes for a while) to find the right thread and then reply in there. I tried to download another SMS program (for search capability), however this resulted in missing SMS messages, due to the phone's power management.
I've made peace with the other niggles - however if the two above issues were not present - this would be the perfect phone!!
The thing is, the phone is so cute, that I haven't been able to let it go yet. I might consider upgrading to the F22, and see if the keypad build quality is better. The phone is not as compact though, so some of the cute factor will be lost.
About keyboards: in some Qin F21 Pro modifications, there is the Kika12 app (KIKA 12-key keyboard).
And this keyboard can type just like, for example, the old push-button Nokia.
Unfortunately, I can't find this application anywhere separately for download...

MY|PHONE™
I made this small freeware.
It shows on your Today Screen, your last phone call and SMS details.
Additionally it can show the phone signal level.
Works on Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition and Windows Mobile 2003.
Just look screenshots.
You can show/hide details (these additional smaller lines) permanently or under the tapping for around 10 seconds.
Icons change the look, to indicate what kind of phone call or SMS message was the last one.
If you have missed last phone call or unread SMS message the title line could be in red to get your attention. Tap the line to view the details and turn off the red color.
To access the menu: tap-and-hold.
To uninstall: open the Start\Settings\Today\Items dialog and uncheck this item, then make soft-reset and uninstall.

This software is freeware. No support, no warranty. It was not tested with all available hardware. If you got problems, let me know and I will try to fix up.
nice, and freeware is always welcomed
BUT
-i'm using Snoopsoft Dashboard 2.0.47 and it crashes my xda2 everytime when i select/deselect it as today module within dashboard (this happens with your Phone Profile software too).
-directly after installation it displays 'Last Phone Call' time from: unkown nr 14m16s. i never received a call at this time and the last call i had was from a known number and lastet only 2 min.
-when receiving a new sms it's telling me 'No SMS received'
looks like going back to the drawing board again...
EDIT:
the problem with dashboard is still here, but a softreset and some new calls fixed the other problems...
but what i noticed: the callers name is displayed correct in the missed call display but not in the last unread sms. it only shows the phone number (without +) and not the contacts name...
dashboard
I'm using dashboard too. Latest version.
I think the problem is with dashboard. because it crashed my machine with other plug-ins too.(in the moment when it is selected/diselected)
When I do not use dashboard there is no crashes with MY|PHONE
as the standard plug-in.
MY|PHONE checks the SMS message "on the fly" (not the SMS outlook storage) only when it's running as TOday Screen item.
Sorry about SMS sender name: yes, it is not working now, only SMS number.
dashboard and pocketfacelift
this is a screenshot where you can see I use both dashboard (none skin) and pocketfacelift together with my programs: MY|PHONE and Phone Profiles (upcoming new version).
I used pocketfacelift (still it is not compatibility with WM2003) just to: skin traybar's background and hide today screen's separate lines. this way: because I do not want to skin taskbar, due problems with dynamic notification icons.
Thx a lot for this app. Really nice one
Where did U get this nice PPS skin? That's best one I've ever seen and I want it badly
PS. Will be nice if clicking on SMS icon leads directly to inbox....
thanks for this app
regards kevin
I want that background too. Cool!
If you don't have the actual picture file, can you zip up the theme, and share it with us?
Nice one mate!
hi jgui,
thanks again. sofar it's working fine... would be cool if you could add the caller display support for received SMS and the possibility to select that a click on the Missed Phoncalls goes to the Callers Log and a click on SMS received to the SMS aplication... what i really like is the red flashing text if you received a new SMS or missed a call... nice
JGUI/guys,
Is it just me, or when you uninstall it, does it leave your today screen section separator bars double the normal width, 2 pixels wide instead of one?
It's driving me mad, and no amount of soft resets will get rid of it. I've tried re-installing then uninstalling, but to no avail.
Anyone else getting this, or moreover, does anyone know how to get my bars back to the normal one pixel width?
the program runs correctly on my QTEK but displays no phone number, just "Missed Phone Call 00:19"
this does not give me more info than the standard warning sign in the taskbar except the time of the call.

Try tapping and HOLDING, in the area of the today screen where the plugin is located.
Then from the pop up menu, choose to tick the extra options to show this, and sms info.
Assuming you haven't already.
As for my last problem - sorted it by turning of ALL Today screen items so that no separator bars showed, then turning them back on.
At least it looks like its back to normal I think.
I'd second a request for that today skin ;-)
not only
you're more than second, tekguru
sorry, I have no rights to this (original) image.

..Super Software , Thanks
Congratulation, nice program.
I have a little problem, after I receive a call or an SMS, Today scrren do not refresh. I need to tap on today sreen, go to setting and clik save to refresh the today screen to show new calls or SMS
same here.
Also, I'd like the plugin to stop displaying that I missed a phone call when I acknowledge it on the taskbar icon.
Is it possible to have the contact name displayed instead of the phone number if it is present ?
nice tool anyway

Is necessary that in setting, you flag "Dissplay Caller's name if recognized"
ok thanks m8, I missed that!
The "settings" option is not very intuitive, I thought it was just the name of the displayed action-menu.
If you can also provide a fix for the refresh, I take it
thanks JGUI
such a great contribution, well done for a small & very usefull sw, thanks again
Hullo,
I have the MY PHONE working in Dashboard no problem. Just remember that after installation, to remove it from the standard today settings and then just tick it on in dashboard. Doing this causes a soft reset but then it will be fine.
I thought that the following changes might make the program much more accessible or maybe you can use these suggestions with some others to allow you to create a 'pro' version
1. Size of the font could be selectable by user.
2. Use bigger icons and position them side by side, (Similar to Battery pack style), when a user taps the icon the text would appear briefly (2 seconds).
3. The signal meter on my XDA II reports 113%, which should not occur.

Is it possible to eliminate specific items from the "today items list" without uninstalling programs altogether? I need to get new programs to show up in this list, and apparently the limit is 13. Any help here please?
Hi
I'm not sure what your problem exactly is... Today screen app bars ?
Go to Settings -> Personal -> Today -> Items <tab>
You can tick/untick today screen elements there.
Thanks, I can tick and untick in that list OK, but if I add I new programm that needs such plugin like tomtom5 or any other and the list grows beyond 13 then some programs dissappear from that list because the limit is apparently 13. So I can't tick what is not shown because I have gone beyond the stupid quota of 13, so my question is how do I get rid of programs in that list that I don't need without actually unistalling them. I hope is more clear now. Thanks again.
I didn't know that that was a limitation, but go into your registry
HKLM > Software > Microsoft > Today
Export that, then remove all entries you don't need, and if you need to, import only the ones you do need later. Slightly dangerous, as ever with the registry, but it'd work.
V
Hi
Oobviously you've got a lot of software installed on your PPC
On the other hand it's preety bad that they haven't thought about more than 13 today apps.
Ok.
I've found registry keys that are responsible for today's mess
\HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Today\Items\
Just use your registry editor and cut the crap you'll never use in there.
It works. They disappear from "items" selection.
If you don't have a registry editor, take this one. It's the simpliest, and best one I know.
Have fun.
EDIT: LOL. The problem was already answered before I've finished polishing my post
Is this a known limitation >13? Eeks.
I'm writing my own plugin, vacuuming up functionality from the other plugins I'd like to use, so hopefully I'll end up with basically one plugin only, but hypothetically, any limitation is still a pain.
V
True XDA-Developer eh ?
If you're making your work available to public please tell where I can find info about your development progess etc.
robal:
I've posted a little elsewhere about my plugin, VJEphemeris, which is a long term work in progress.
Thus far it contains an analog clock, date with popup calendar, alarm clock setting and notification (cus you don't bloody know when it's set and on!), Quote of the day, autosizing according to length, missed call notification, last sms details, temperature, volume control, battery status, current phone operator (for dual sims), multi-bank launcher facility and theft protection (detects if user is using a non authorised sim, and then sms's me with the phone number (and shortly, cellid), permitting me to sms it back causing it to format the sd, optional hard reset and I'm considering optional bricking - thanks Olipro).

That's the basic version I use currently. I've got tonnes to add when I finish a bit more stuff for release for you lot!
VJEphemeris is a continuous test bed of ideas I'm trying to implement. It's unlikely to be released, or at least as is. It's currently entirely customised around my use (although it's all too damn skinnable: I haven't gone into designing a UI yet, I'm just making it easy to use one thumbed! Try cutting out the screenshot and see how you thumb rests naturally on the important stuff. I'm trying to make it nicely ergonomic).

Impressive, please let me attend my kids and will let you know soon if I can solve this. Thank you very much
Problem solved thanks to you guys. Now I can have everything I want. Cheers
Whats providing the weather details? Looks Like the BBC, what are you using for that?
Seahorse - is that to me? I think I'm using weather panel, and that downloads from its own website.
V
Hi Vijay is there anyway you could release a usable version? I love the clock and Picture links.
viJay!... temperature?... Can you tell us how to get it?... Thanks!
batter temperature is built into the os api. when i get in front of a pc next week send me a pm if you still need code.
the clock isn't releasable yet, i've had no time to work on it because of other projects for this board... will continue with it as soon as poss. i've got big plans for it

Today Plugins
I've come rather late to this thread but have exactly the same problem.
However using Resco Registry editor I have removed several plugins but they are still shown in the list and some like Inbox and Tasks etc cannot be deleted.
Your further assistance would be appreciated.
Brian Leach
brian, they're system plugins. They don't need to be removed. Just disable them from Today settings and leave them as is IMHO.
V
Today Plugins
Now working fine.
Thanks for your help.

Sorry to revive this old thread. But my today screen got wiped out and only date/owner/calendar/tasks are available now. Is it possible for you to describe what this today registry registry looks like? I have each one of the items inside the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Today\Items\ registry, but they're not showing up.
Thanks
steph280:
Under Items there is a key for each of today items (their names are what you see in the listbox). Under each of this keys there is a value named "DLL" which contains the name of the DLL that actually creates the plug-in. Make sure those files are where they suppose to be. (if there is no path the file should be in windows directory)
If you don't see the item keys, but have the DLLs in place, you could try to create the keys with their names and following values inside:
DLL (string) filename.dll
Selectability (dword) 0 / 1 / 2 (depends on the plug-in)
Type (dword) 4
Options (dword) 0 / 1 (1 if the plug-in has options dialog)
Enabled (dword) 1
Order (dword) place from the top you want it in.
Some plug-ins may add custom values to this key to use for their settings.
If you have many third party plug-ins you should just re-install them to fix the problem.
Hope this helps, good luck.
I didn't read anything about whether it is ok to make requests here or not, so I just give it a try.
If I do something wrong, please tell me.

Introduction:
Many of you may already know it, the lack of functionality on your keyboard.
No matter what kind of keyboard replacer you installed, there is always this situation where you need some other functionality like a different key layout.
Just imagine those situations:
The standard android keyboard fits quite well for you and there are no problems surfing the internet and sending some mails.
But you work as an html and php coder and you like to do some work on the train. You could download a fitting keyboard for that, but now you have to change the keyboard all the time depending on what you are doing.
In addition you are a math/law/chemistry/whatever student and need those damn +-*/%&$§ so often it drives you crazy. Another keyboard would fit, but again: changing the keyboard all the time?
In addition you are from spain and speak german with your family. You would want to have äöü aswell as ñ in your keyboard.
There are so many scenarios a developer needs to consider when creating a new keyboard app, it's nearly impossible to cover all of them.
Those keys are there on the keyboard, but the user needs to press 1 or 2 additional buttosn just to find them!
So by bringing those buttons to the main keyboard (or wherever the user needs them to be faster) we can enhance productivity on tablets and smartphones a lot!
Just imagine you had a keyboad that allowes you to:
- create your own unique keyboard layout, fitted for YOUR needs!
- create profiles for YOUR activities and switch them easily with just 2 taps!
- asign profiles directly to apps, so they get set to active whenever that ap is opened!
Sounds awesome, doesn't it?
So how should this work?
Let me talk about the android keyboard and explain with that example how my idea could be realized.
This is what we have:
{

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
We can divide the elements in different parts.
The core of every keyboard are the letters, a-z:
(Note: I centered the keys)
These are the core keys on your keyboard.
In addition you have some advanced controll keys, like caps, tab etc.
And last but not least (actually the thing we need to fit stuff to our needs) are additional keys that can take various functions like '.' ',' '!' '?' '@' etc....
So these are the keys we need to add to make the keyboard work like we want, so it actually improves our productivity.
ok ok, we got that. Get to the real deal!
What does the user need to make a keyboard fit his or her needs?
1) Add rows
The easiest way is adding an additional layer above with more keys, for example the numbers 1-9 like ASUS did.
Easy, clean, exactly what we need.
But just adding more and more layers would result in confusion, so we need to change more stuff
2) Change the Size of the buttons
Sounds simple, but making buttons smaller is a real space safer! And that's exactly the point, we need SPACE to add additional keys. If I get space for 2 additional keys per row it can be a great advantage for my productivity!
3) Add buttons
Already talked about it and this should be the main feature.
We just got some nice space for buttons and we just add them with the function YOU want. need < > to fasten your html coding? add it to your keyboard! Using a lot of € $ + - / * since you are a smartass stockbroker? Add it directly to the keyboard! Learning another language you need other letters for at school? Add those to your keyboard!
Once again: you CAN get those keys on your keyboard already, but it always takes time and additional taps on your screen. if you want to have a key on your main keyboard because you are usign it so ****ing often THIS will save you time and enhance productivity!
If anybody of you guys is interested in creating something awesome, please contact me!
I am not a coder.
I just had the problems described above a lot and didn't find a fitting ap.
The truly greatest keyboard I ever used was the "Day Hand Input" (or something like this) for Symbian.
It's speciality was, that besides the ordinary button press you had 4 additional characters on each button used by pressing it und then sliding your finger in one of the four directions. You had literaly every available character reached by one button press. Also the thing was more or less easily configurable.
When I'll got some free time apart from college, I may start reviving this thing for Android.
Also, here's a screenshot of it:
that's not exactly the point.
What I mean is something like the possibility to create different keyboard profiles with layouts fitted for me + a fast switch so when I want to code something or write an assay it just fits ;-)

In this 5 minuts article we describe all the very weird things in Android, and we want to ask you - what do you say?
at first we saying that all of this is on built-in apps. Why to do that? ads custom, know what to upgrade for android, control in market, corperation with government entities like many times is past (Events in France on cooperation with cellular companys and government that they wiretapping your calls), read news, think about it - how google now know where you live, what you doing, where you visited.. and also you should take a look in this - https://history.google.com/history/ your all seraches and history.
One. (Shown all over the news) - "Next Android version will change the way the root work":
We asking, what happend to our "good times" Android experience? ("Open source", "Android will be different then iOS" Etc.)
Google want her privacy in system files, in control, in blocking permission root apps.
Keep reading, this was to notice what happend right now.
Two. Suspicious processes running in the background all the time
Three. Very Strange Permissions:
Hint: Android asks for credit card information on first running. ok its useful, fast, and great reason to take this details.
"Connect & Disconnect from Wi-Fi" - Dont cofuse we talk about other apps like "Factory Mode" etc. that running all the time in the background, why it need to turn on\off the Wi-Fi..? there is the main Wi-Fi settings, where YOU control the Wi-Fi, this is auto control. probably you not even see when Wi-Fi turned on it self. check in your built-in apps. its comfortable, came with the phone - you not need to install or update apps. and this came to many apps that nod need this. come on check it on few apps.
"Share your device's screen with another device" - Wow that was cool if was a built-in TeamViewer app! (wtf?!)
"Modify battery statistics" - in other words fake the battery status and deleting statistics, so the battery stats is not secure way to know what working and used the battery (!). (After long waiting for explain, they told me that is wrong spell. sure. the great perfect Google wrong in spell 4 official versions?! no, its modify.
"Downloading files without notification" - (you dont even noticed that something download, maybe right now)
"Add or modify calender events and send emails without host's permission" - In other words, the hosts is you. and emails send from you to another "mysterious" people. very smartly they put "Add or modify calender events" in start to hide this.
"Internet Browser" have permissions to - "Record audio" , "Take pictures and videos" (Allows application to take pictures and record video at any time).
"Mobile Tracker"! - Service that connects to the Internet and if your phone stolen you can lock him, wipe the device.
But I dont noticed that he canto call, send & read sms, record audio, share screen, read browser data (cookies etc.) and history, set an alarm in "Clock" (?), Access to NFC and more.
This was should be great options to my stolen phone. and very hurt for my private info.

Four. System applications linked to each other. - if one is turned off - problems starting.
The Android system built like this, that system applications linked to each other - you can check with few programmers that know this.
This is a nightmare of every programmer, when something get wrong, - to start searching problems and fix them. maybe rewriting the whole code. but google wants this.
Well, its like we'll have to install GTA V,ARMA 3, and COD:Ghosts to play Pacman.
You have turned off one - the other will continue to operate
Five. Permissions granted to applications that not supposed to do that
Gallery - can record audio, calling, etc.
Adjust color (with this you set sharpness and color tone, this of course very small option in Settnigs) - can view sms, terminate processes, access Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and etc.
And more like in "Three".
Thanks for helping, google.
very small part of "Help" premissions. check it.
Six. Almost every app has strange permissions that it should not have, check it yourself.
Seven. p.s.
We expected that Google, the "can do anything" company, in couple versions of Android will greatly improve the system and make it run faster.
(damn, windows 7 has same requirement) Although that iPhone have barely one processor with two cores, running like a cannon against my SGS4.
True, it is Android, we have higher resolution and quality and have more things to handle - but we espect that this 4*4 cores (SGS4) "computer" do more.
Maybe just another hidden processes in the background causing it?
Factory Mode - for some reason gives all permissions that you can in cell-phone. Why this running on your device now?
Eight. The Smart Google
In few words they do on you the trick. they can say that all permissions need for some reasons, but is great reason to connect you to the Internet 24\7 365 day in year. and the all hints points on something else.
Last. We care.
we care that "Hangouts" replacing our default message apps (why to put 2 applications of texting? its like to use the same cameras to take picture. one for us, one for google.)
some people dont care, and they are right. we become indifferent that all the world dig in our lifes. but it should not like this.
what you feel if steal your credit card, watch on you in bathroom, have your "deleted" snapchat images, take a look on your sister?
And what if in one day I waill want to use this?
mmm.. not really
What you say?
for the great people that read this - you must change it, do somethig. take the glove.
Oh boy....

Google SUCKS! From now on, I will be boycotting all google products. I will also be boycotting any other brand who violates MY privacy.
Point #1 is all wrong, there's a big diference between Android as an OS and AOSP.
AOSP = open source
All the rest = closed source
I have been using App ops starter and is closely watching the permission i should allow. but still i doubt that GOOGLE is not letting us to put various restriction that should have been there.
Damn it GOOGLE.
Mod Edit
All very interesting , but not relevant to the S4
Please take this to OT

About:
I've been on XDA since 2008, but I've been more of a consumer than a producer. Rooted my android device, turned it inside out. I have XDA to thank for that. I think it's time to give back.
And so, yes. This is my first post here on XDA, but certainly not my first experience into programming or posting on forums.
At the last count, I had 304 apps installed, and only 7 homescreens. All 7 are full, and not every single app was important enough to earn its place there.
But the apps I do have, I have for a reason. I have so many 'occasional-use' apps lying around that are useful enough for me to keep, but not used often enough for me to pin them to the homescreen.
iOS has a brilliant solution - its Spotlight search let's you find any app you have. But on Android? So many times I couldn't find an app when I really needed it because it was lost in the launcher, in its many pages.
You may or may not need this, simply because your manufacturer could have included a search feature in their customized Android implementation on your device. You may already have the ability to search for your apps.
But one thing I hated - was some features being in some devices, but not in others. Samsung's Multi-Window feature, for instance. You'd have one camp, happy with all the additional features that they have, while others, running equally capable hardware, running an almost equivalent operating system, are denied these useful features. I understood Samsung's need to have a competitive advantage, but that didn't mean I liked it. At the time I really wanted someone to just code an app that gave the functionality to everyone else. Today, there's the Xposed framework. There are multi-window-enabling mods out there that bring that goodness to you and everyone else outside that inner circle. And I think that's great. This is what open Android is.
I know stock Android doesn't have search built in. Some devices like the Sony Xperia series do. Whatever the reason - perhaps you think the inbuilt search is buried behind too many clicks, or isn't intuitive enough - should you want to try out the app, it's available here on the Play Store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rjt.appsearch
If searching for it on-device, you have to put "App Search Plus" in quotation marks. Otherwise, it's #100+ in the search results, even with a search for the exact name. One thing I learnt was that Google provides zero traffic and visibility for new apps.
When I designed this I held fast to the idea that your apps are your eventual destination, and this app's design reflects that. Finding your apps is but the means to an end - and so you'll see that the app doesn't take over your screen, presenting you with options that you'll never take. I aimed to design an app that was seamless; one that didn't interrupt you. I hope you like what you see.
Do post comments and if you have any feature requests, please send them in. Please do note that I'm not looking to overburden this app with features though! It has one function - and it's my hope that it excels in it.

Typing in the google search box on the homescreen on my Nexus 5 returns app results but thats not very intuitive at all. I like how your app starts with "A" so it will be right there when I inevitably go to the list of apps to tediously search for one.
Yes, Google Search seems to want to show you its web results first and order your apps last, every time.
Amazing work. Been looking for an app like this for a very long time!
Few things to consider:
- when pulling up (google search gesture) there's no icon, would be nice to put a search icon in there
- ability to exclude certain apps from the search
Thanks again!
@Cow07
I had initially left out the icon because Android 4.4 (on my phone) had a default icon that had a working focus state. (it seems that custom icons don't get the hover-over highlight that Google Now gets.)
It appears that on Android 5.0 Google has done away with the default icon and now the icon is simply blank. I'll push out an update for the icon soon! Thanks for the feedback.
As for excluding apps, I think that's a good idea. Will implement that soon.
Love the app! Would appreciate the ability to auto-launch an app if its the only result of the search!
Launch using home button long-press?
Upgraded to Android M on EUI 5.8.917S and lost the ability to launch App Search + by long pressing the home button. My device is Le 1s. Any solutions?
Very useful
It's a very useful app, I have a Xiaomi device and organizing/searching for apps was always a huge pain point as MIUI doesn't have an app drawer. The Google app searches for apps though, but it's slow and puts them in the bottom of the list.
I would love a widget, because the open by "long-press on home, then swipe up" doesn't work on MIUI. Or do you have any tricks to solve the swipe action on MIUI?
Anyway, I put together a few screens in Sketch, so that I can show you how the widget should work in my opinion. See the screens here:

Thank you for your work on this. Keep it up!
Best,
Zsolt
P.s.: if you ever need some help in design, just let me know, I'd love to participate in projects like this
I can't find any better place to file a bug report, so I hope you're still watching this thread. Anyway, this app had been working fine on my Pixel for all versions of Nougat. I just updated to Oreo, and the app now crashes whenever the search results would contain an app for a Google service (e.g. Play Store, Gmail, YouTube, Drive, etc.). It's not restricted to built-in apps; I downloaded Google Keep, which is not included with the Pixel, and experienced the same problem when searching for it. All other searches still work fine.
Thank you, and I hope you can find a solution.
