Color saturation & accuracy

If you're colorblind, please disregard this thread. Rate this thread to express how you deem the color saturation and accuracy of the Google Pixel 2 XL's display. A higher rating indicates that you think that color accuracy is very high and saturation is excellent.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Checked out the xl2 at verizon. Colors seems having too much black. Still has greenish color shifting in some viewing angle

Yes couldn't agree more, my pixel XL 2 is so washed out I'm tempted to switch back to my note 8!!

Compared to a over saturated Samsung it probably does look washed out, in the picture posted, look at the hearts, the pixel looks red and you can see how oversaturated the Sammy is

Well in contrast, look at the beach on both photos. When I looked at both side by side, Pixel definitely lacked saturation in my opinion. I guess it comes down to personal preference but I never understood why people wouldn't like Samsungs saturation. Makes everything look much nicer, and if one wants to mute colors, there are a bunch of profiles in the settings as well as adjustments for individual colors. When you lack saturated colors like on this Pixel to begin with, you can't just bring more color out that easily.

The Verizon I went to had it setup with some preloaded messages, didn't actually get to see the OS and working screens. My comparison would be to the numbers the display is measured at, delta E, gamma, etc,... that is the only true measurement of color accuracy.

A similar post on Reddit mentioned that the Pixel 2 XL is set to sRGB mode by default, and that there was a toggle to make it more vibrant somewhere in the display settings. It would be interesting to see the same comparison with that toggle set to "On" with the Pixel (assuming that the info is good, and that the toggle exists at all).

That's true, there was a switch "Vibrant Colors" under Display settings but it was turned on at the one I checked

Google devices have been historically very accurate with the screen colors. Going from LG/Samsung will be noticable.

People tend to get that way these days because of the way televisions are sold with the brightness and color saturation practically maxed out. This results in super unrealistic colors that tend to offset your idea of what "good" is while killing off subtle image details in the process. Samsung seems to like to do the same thing with phones, perhaps based on the same mindset that their TV guys use: Make things flashy.
In the showroom it may boost sales, but when I take my TV home, the first thing I do is tone all of that down to make sure the color balance is more realistic. For example, I want grass to look like grass would be colored, not neon-green. sRGB mode on Google's phones is nice because it does that for you, without needing any color filters and test patterns.

YES. So. Many. Times. This.
I shake my head when I see people show off their new TV's with sharpness at 100 and vivid color profiles with bright colors and cool temp selected. More power to do what u want with your stuff, but it just looks rediculous.

As a photographer using calibrated displays and a Photoshop user, don't make up your mind on Webb posts. And I want a natural and sRGB.

Love the super saturated colors. This is coming from a normal consumer without any "expertise" in anything related to the subject matter. My eyes like it.

I despise the over-saturation Sammy does. This is good news to me.

This is funny because although I was only able to see the the Pixel 2 screen (non XL) I'm positive both will have great displays. I do like Samsung displays however I hate when the over saturation shows the absolutely wrong color. But not too long ago the Samsung S8 & S8+ displays had a red & purple tint on the white screen. And that was actually a very prevalent issue which was fixed by a software update. After seeing the Pixel 2 display I thought it looked good.

I have read that the display on the Pixel 2 XL has a bluish tint when viewed off angle and that the LG V30, which is said to have the same display as the Pixel 2 XL, has screen uniformity issues.
I went to my local Verizon yesterday to play with the phone and see for myself. The bluish tint off angle is absolutely there. It didn't bother me but it might bother some. As far as screen uniformity I didn't see any issues. At least not with the display phone. I tested with light gray and dark gray backgrounds at high and low screen brightness and I used my hands to block out room lighting as best as I could.
Color saturation looked good to me. A bit more saturated than my Nexus 5X I used as a side by side comparison.

The verge panned the v30 display in their review today. This isn't looking good

I have downloaded this on my Netflix App Stranger Things 3 Ep1. I was using Xs Max prior to this. So when watching this episode I realised its too dark even in daylight scene. So I compared it to iPhone 8 Plus & Xs Max at the same scene & there was Night & Day Difference
No Matter whichever mode I selected the scene looked crap on Op7 pro ,Video Enhancer seemed to have no effect whatsoever.
No my question is ,Is That due to Hdr or screen is very much inferior? Or is it just the calibration done wrong by Oneplus.
If I root & flash custom kernel Will I be able to make it better?
Images attached are in full brightness on all the phones without any edits.
Even Lcd is better than Op7 Pro
Vs 8 plus its Nature Mode & Vs Xs Max its Srgb

I think its only yours. My colors are extremly colorful and sharp.

In general screen is vibrant & sharp but In videos when compared its not as bright as others

This is the screenshot taken of Comparison between the both from Pocket Now .See the colours, It's dull in Op7 Pro

The One Plus looks for realistic to me. The other phones seem blown out.

Can we tweak this with custom kernel or custom rom like Havoc or Lineage OS

The 7 pro should get brighter then the 8 plus. Compare hdr videos on YouTube.
I noticed the note 9 gets brighter with more clarity in direct sunlight compared to the 7 pro. But the 7 pro istill gets plenty bright and overall I prefer its larger 90hz display. It's possible there could be some variation in displays between units. Only way to test yourself is compare it with another pro.

To me it simply looks like the 7 pro is dimmer, which is normal, and the calibration is different but that mostly depends on how you set it on both. If you're going from an XS Max to a 7 pro DO NOT expect a similar quality screen, apple has way stricter QC and have the best calibrated screens, probably cherry picked as well, it's just a phone that costs nearly twice as much as the other so no surprise. I don't mean the 7 pro is bad, I think it's better than the s10 plus if we leave brightness out of the equation, you just shouldn't expect it to be on par with the more expensive iphones, which are demonstrated to be the best on the market.

For Me Brightness is not an issue, It's just that the screen in the videos seem dull or less vibrant when compared at same brightness levels.It looks like its calibrated in such a way that it suppress colours.
Is it possible to change that with a custom kernel or roms like havoc have their own calibration?
I would have bought S10+ if they launched sd variant here,Exynos is just ridiculous

I have the OP 7 Pro and a friend with an iPhone XS Max and his gets brighter but he likes the looks (color) and sharpness better on the 7 Pro. The pro is more true color and you can punch up the saturation more if you like. I think I have my 7 Pro display set on advanced>Display P3 and the slider bar about 55-60% if you used the Cold at 0% and Warm at 100% so it's slightly toward the warm side from the half way mark of the slider. This gives the 7 Pro display a bit more of a richer color.
Forget about the 90hz, the 7 Pro is just full on ridiculously better then any other phone but the one that's 120hz (Asus or ROG phone I think) especially since you can just force 90hz all apps on the fly (JOnePlus Tool app in Play store) and really see very little battery drain differences.

There is a HBM (high brightness) app you can use. Not sure if you need to be rooted or not. No issues here. Screen is beautiful.

It's a netflix HDR problem, even in 4k TVs.
Try a non HDR movie or series.
I was disappointed as well, but seems like it's got nothing to do with OnePlus.

I was watching the same show on Netflix today and I thought it was bad to. It was daylight out, but was very hard to see. Way to dark. I'm rooted so I don't think that matters. Maybe it's just that recording or stream.

Can we tweak with a custom kernel that supports it? I'm not rooted but will root if this is possible

You've probably already tried this but try playing around with the different picture settings (Screen calibration).
Also maybe try toggling the video enhancer option as well.

Regardless, I'll admit it's my mistake but still no need to be snarky about it.

I think with the alternative kernel is possible only to active the bright mode that push the nits at the max. I think is not possible to modify the contrast ecc... Like the s10+ video mode

Display isn't bright?

Have had the Note 20 Ultra from T-Mobile since Wednesday and then phones been be great except for two flaws. One is native gestures still not working 100% smooth with third party launchers - which is okay, I am using FNG anyway, but another is the screen brightness.
Despite being in direct sunlight, the panel doesn't get bright. Samsung claims 1500 nits of brightness, it definitely doesn't get there through either manually sliding the brightness or setting it to auto brightness. Definitely isn't as bright as my OnePlus 8 Pro.
I've annoyingly factory reset the phone to no avail. Anyone else having issues?

Yes, it's not great .... my Note 8 is brighter in normal use.
The panel does get brighter in strong daylight but the maximum manual brightness is poor.

It is some kind of protection bec extra brightness for long time damage Amoled displays so they decided to limit it in normal usage

It's bright but the white point is um, weird.
Reminds me of the Surface Pro IPS panels, always, always, too green!
And the ability to adjust RGB levels has nary an effect!
I want the ability to calibrate the display properly FFS!
I know it's a decent display but gimping the calibration ability makes about as much sense as putting bias ply tires on a Ferrari!

If you read what samsung say about its Dynamic Amoled panels you will understand why the white looks weird , they have implemented a Hardware blue light filter which filters the harmful blue light emissions that is why all new samsung displays show white a llitle yellowish , It might not be the best looking but is is safe for your eyes and renders a more accurate colors.

What's the point of having that?
It's clearly inferior to my professional displays.
Proper calibration and white point is *everything*.
It does NOT look yellowish, it has too much green.
That looks horrible.
After using it for a day I cannot believe how much better my Mac, 11 Pro Max and S20 Ultra looks.

Can you please tell me if the screen isn't bright if adaptive mode is turned off? (120hz)

Compared to the Note 10+ it's significantly brighter even in 120Hz, and I often need to lower it even with the adaptive brightness on.
It's somewhere around 1/5 or 1/6th of the brightness bar.

Apparently there are reports that the green-tint issue is manifested on the Snapdragon version as well as the Tab S7 and S7+.

Mine and my wife's doesn't have this issue..

Nope, don't want it either!

No green on mine.

I did. Luckily I got it replaced the very next day even if I *did* have to waste maybe 4 hours on the whole replacement process.
It was so bad that even on normal brightness you could see the green tinge on everything that was supposed to be black, or very dark grey.

Just green tint? Mine was being a little yellowish so i reduced the color temperature then there was green tint and finally today i decided to compare my note 8 and the screen is not even as sharp as my 3 year old note 8. I am on support chat in the process to return it. This one is 512 GB U1 Variant.

The smaller chipsets and components Samsung will substitute as availability/demand dictates.
This can cause one or more to be out spec and/or the firmware and/or updates to behave unpredictably.
Worse it seems the only way Sambert knows which part was actually used sometimes is to physically inspect the device. So if it's a firmware bug Samsung still can't remotely remedy it... perfect.
Using multiple main chipsets and firmware versions in the same model only adds to this confusion.
A lot of room for error... in a box full of rabid gerbils, what could go wrong?

Note 20 Ultra has a 6.9-inch display (496 ppi) when you have the resolution at WQHD+.
Note 8 has a 6.3-inch display (521 ppi) when you have the resolution at WQHD+.
Shouldn't be able to see any difference at that PPI level.
Did you have both phones on the same resolution when you were comparing?

Yes i did, i was thinking about the PPI, probably that is making the difference in sharpness but i am not sure about the contrast difference.

Hmm. It looks pretty sharp to me in FHD+ from holding distance, WQHD+ is razor sharp. Maybe don't put the Note 8 next to it

Trust me i didnt for a whole month but then when you pay 1500+ no discounts nothing and then you see your 3 year old phone holding its own, you want to question things, dont you. BTW just for fun sake here is a shot taken at exact same moment from Note 8 and Note 20 for side by side comparison.

Yeah of course, you don't want to be disappointed in anything with a new phone costing 1000 pounds. I think the differences year to year are going to become smaller and smaller, and a 2 or 3 year old flagship is still going to be amazing. Photos can only become so good at a point.
I think the resolution comment though, the PPI is negligible and not worth bumping the PPI to match Note 8, that would bring the resolution over 3K and probably lead to even more battery drain. But it could be a software difference as well and things are smoother on the Note 20U.
Back when I used to flash custom roms i remember some roms would appear sharper than others, so software can have an effect.
Anyway, yeah the photos look very similar. Fur is bit sharper on the N20U. Was that night mode?

The dog really appreciated the Cute dog comment and says thanks. The picture from N20U1 definitely looks sharper, no it wasnt night mode just took a quick one on auto settings. Night mode is really good and even better on the gcam (Trust me the software processing on goggle cam night mode is amazing). I will take a comparison shot tonight when i go out and post something tomorrow, where i am there is still 8 hours until i go out for that night shot.

Here's what you do if you really want to spot the difference. Activate chrome and YouTube dark mode on both the note 20 ultra and note 8. You'll see that the blacks are deeper on the note 8. The black on the note 20 ultra looks a bit yellowish in comparison. But funny enough, It only looks yellowish if you compare. If you don't compare, it'll seem just fine. That's why I've been saying it's not bad, but it's definitely not as contrasty and punchy as previous notes. But by no means is it horrible...and it's true, cute dog lol

True mine was a little greenish i fixed those by going to Display>>Screen Mode>> Advanced Settings>> and turned the green all the way down . Also thanks from the pooch.

Lol the pooch is welcome! :laugh: But I did the same thing as well too. Turned the green and red all the way down and the blue all the way up. It really does make a difference, but you can still see the the note 8, 9, s10 plus..etc has a deeper black. You can compare and see. Maybe Samsung needs to adjust the sRGB mode or something. Hopefully the next software may soothe this a little. Again, not a huge deal. It almost looks like blue filter on at an extremely low rate.

I have uneven brightness, specially at the bottom and right side of the screen, and banding when brightness is set to really low. Just look at it.
I've already asked for a replacement.

What background app are you viewing that on? Mine doesn't look like that. I use dead pixel to look at how even the Whites and grays are displayed. When I turn the brightness all the way down and open an empty page in chrome's dark mode, I do notice coloration, but it's more leaning towards being even. Let us know how the return unit fairs. I've looked at 3 different models with the yellowish overtone.

I choose max resolution as i can see the difference, i dont see any difference between 60, 96 and 120 Hz unless i go to a test site. I also dont like constant screen flickering that occurs with the adaptive mode so for me i like the consistent 60 Hz at Max resolution. I have no games that use 120 Hz if i did then i would change to 120 Hz before starting the game.

120Hz no question for me, I couldn't even see the difference between FHD+ and QHD+ on my S20U, haven't bothered even trying it on my N20U

120Hz all the way. I can not see the difference in resolution anyway. Plus I have a 1440P monitor if I "need" things bigger.

Max resolution has way less screen artifacts.
Also doesn't have the green tint and color banding, or resolution lines the 120hz produces.

I have mine at 96hz and a bixby routine setup to change the res and refresh rate to Qhd/standard for certain apps. Mainly, streaming services. Once I close out, it changes back to 1080/adaptive.

We all see / perceive differently.
My preference is 120hz adaptive refresh rate.

Go in a dark room, even though I can distinguish them in normal lighting.
Here's an easy way to see them,
Download google messages if you don't already use it, use dark mode. Create a message thread, keep it blank for best results, hit the search and then drop the keyboard down. That background is perfect to showcase the green tint, color banding and uneven tone at the same time.
On my note 10+ and note 9 it's a perfect even grey.
I've tried that background with every note 20u on display in best buy with same distortions showing up.
The samsung reps even noticed it after asking me what I was doing lol.
My best friend is a regional manager for tmobile and he's noticed all the handsets he's looked at have it too.
I really do believe every n20u has this issue, if not every north america n20u has it.
If you don't notice it, try another phone and compare them side to side, it's should be obvious then.

Is it not Google messages with the tint? You should be able to replicate it with any dark screen not just Google Messages, if it is the display itself.

No because on my note 9 and 10+, my girlfriend's pixel 4 its a solid grey background without the artifacts.
I'm just letting you guys know the easiest way for you guys to see it. It definitely shows up on all of Google's apps that use that dark mode background

I chose max resolution at 60Hz, the battery endurance matters to me especially when I'm using Exynos..
I also respect those who like to have 120Hz at 1080p, that unavoidable smoothness definitely matters.
I wish it had a bigger battery & ran at 1440p at 120Hz.

Its not the messages he is trying to give you an easy reference color, the default dark mode background color of google msgs makes it easy. One can download grey wallpapers to see the same effect.

Max resolution for me. Don't notice a difference at 120hz

I keep mine at 60hz and 1080p. Can't really tell the difference in resolution from full and qhd. And I can tell the difference in 60 and 120hz but only if I go looking for it. I'd rather have battery life than gimmicks. Although I do switch over to 120hz for the 1 or 2 games I play that support it. Really the only place the faster refresh is an advantage.

I guess I still don't get it, that or I got a lucky one. I don't use google messages, but I did put a plain gray screen on and I don't see any green. I don't have any issues with the google apps that I use either (maps, youtube, youtube music).

Max resolution here as well.

May be or if you have note 8 or 9 or 10 try putting the same wallpaper on both the phones and see. i think i uploaded a side by side pic somewhere on the forum of a note 8 and note 20 Ultra having same wallpaper you can see the difference.

120Hz is so smooth and enjoyable so I stick with it.
I never experienced any flickering or issue so far.
