Good bye my Galaxy S4 - Mini review

Don't misunderstand. I like this phone very very much.
I have Note 2, and except the pen and battery, S4 is way better. However, these are too important for me to change to S4. Besides, I bought the S4 with 30% sale off, so I can have some profit from selling it. After using the phone for a week, here is my mini-review
Feel: A little bit angular, but still much better than S3 and Note 2. Feel quite gorgeous. However the side is a little bit iPhone-alike.
Screen:
- Brightness: Oh well, the maximum manual brightness is not as bright as my Note 2 (A Brighter Note app activated), but outdoor visibility is way better. Under sun light with auto brightness, white is much whiter (brighter), black under s much less blueish - mean darker. I can feel a little better in reflective level. I think most reviewers forget to turn automatic brightness on.
- Color: colors with Standard mode or Professional mode (AdobeRGB mode) are great, sometimes I prefer the formal, sometimes I prefer the latter (actually it's still a little bit over saturated compared to Note 2 - master sequence Perseus kernel, but I feel more pleasant with it. Black is, true black. Every AMOLED screen I had before is still bright in dark room, but not S4. Don't worry about ink spots or black spots, even there are some you cannot recognize, believe me,
- Viewing angle: better than Note 2, truely
Best screen I have ever had so far.
Heat and Battery: Oh well. It's quite hot with 3G browsing or benchmarking, but still bearable. Battery is quite good, at the middle between S3 and Note 2 (both with mature kernels, so battery of S4 will be greater later)
Camera Compared to Note 2: better white balance (a bit), similar color reproduction and saturation, much sharper (I like zooming and cropping, but for most it's not very easy to recognize), better in shooting moving objects (not as good as One). Night photos is much similar to Note 2 (brightness, color) but much less noise.
But I could not find outdoor visibility mode like Note 2, a minus point.
User experience: benchmark king in almost any area: 630 ms in Sunspider, 13k Quadrant, 28k Antutu, 40fps GLBenchmark, 2600 Browsermark, 3630 Geekbench 2,... (I recorded the best scores). It's quick like Usain Bolt, shooting a low-light photo 2-3 times faster than Note 2.
However, there are still a few strange hipcups in browsing (when zooming maximum and then scrolling) but I'm sure that it's software problem. But the browser is bad, really bad. No quick control and flash support (or I didn't find out how), tab-switching is a pain in the ass. No direct bookmark syncing from desktop chrome. I used Ocean Browser, much much much better (I recommend everyone uses this app)
Sound: The same speaker as Note 2, but better with amplifier.
I don't want to spend a lot for phones, so I decided to wait for Note 3, which is surely better than S4 in important areas (screen, camera, speed) or at least on par.

Thank you for the review. Apart from benchmarking, does the phone tend to heat up a lot in normal use? Also, which variant of the S4 did you have, the snapdragon one or exynos?

Yeah, I think if you're a Note user who enjoys the S Pen features and huge display as well as the incredible batt life then the GS4 isn't for you.
Your benchmarks are pretty much the same as mine, I also got the Octa beast

Quick question but now that there's Air View does the S-Pen still have any advantages over just using your fingers? Besides some people finding it easier to draw with the pen then by hand.

There is no "dot" presenting the location of your finger, I think SS will update this feature soon.

This just makes me sad hope it doesn't get noticebly hot while using on wifi atleast......Was hoping they wouldve improved this by now.

I've been using mine on WiFi non stop with no major heating up for 5h32mins now, still got 55% batt.

Maybe thats the issue samsung was having with the octa, overheating. I doubt you could overclock the octa much without it overheating.

Glad to hear about this directly from users :victory:
The poor outdoor visibility and ultra-slow charging were the main problems that Samsung needed to fix before I switched from my iPhone.

day 2 of using it... trade in my s3... love it so much.. definitely not selling (i said the same thg for my s3 )

probably general use time. I think that 5 and half hours of screen on time would be more than a dream for a smartphone.

OP3 vs OP6 Display

So I've had the op3 since it's launch in 2016 and it's been a great phone that has slowly deteriorated in recent times in terms of battery life especially and I've become less impressed with it's display recently especially when I compared it to a Nokia 7 plus display which is 402 ppi and LCD,but I found the display noticably crisper on it compared to the op3
My op6 is on its way now and I'm hoping to see a good difference in the display.I see that the display for op6 is also 402 ppi compared to 401 on the op3.
The op3 display is okay but colors kind of look washed out at times and the blacks don't look that black, It's never sharp and crisp,
Has anyone compared the two and found a noticable difference,maybe the display has gotten better since the op5 ??

Supposedly the op6 has a surprisingly good display for only being 1080p.

I'm coming from a Galaxy S8 with a QHD screen and find the OP6 screen to be perfectly crisp and fine, loving it

I also came from a QHD Samsung. The OP6 display is great, despite the lower resolution.
One criticism of it would be the max brightness is hardly enough outdoors. Just a little brighter would help. Samsung was much brighter, but I've never seen a OP3 to compare with. Otherwise, the OP6 display is nice.

I compared them both side-by-side.. Not a lot of difference in terms of sharpness.. Better color reproduction on op6.. Whites are more pronounced,a bit brighter too.

It's decent 1080p, great depending on what phone you coming from. Not usable on bright sunny days. Been a week and eyes still trying to adjust.
Perfer my note 8 screen. Night and day. Take 30minutes less of sot.

I came from OnePlus 3t and the difference was unbelievable , brightness in daylight is much better, lower brightness at night is more achievable and the biggest difference I found between the 2 when put next to each other is the whites. After 1.5 year the 3T gives a yellowish white while the 6 gives a true white color

Sounds promising,looking forward to comparing to my op3 when my six finally arrives this week.I do notice the yellowy,gray whites on the op3

That's great to hear. I've had to pay for a VERY expensive screen replacement on my S8 because there were no tempered glass protectors available. I just cannot bear to use a naked screen for fear of micro scratches.
My OP6 will be delivered tomorrow.
I have a request to make. How does netflix and prime video play on the OP6? does it play in HD ? The 5T had problems playing HD content when it released and none of the reviews of the 6 ive seen talk about that.

Yes,all this is true,I was referring more to the display,it's pretty much the same as the op3,the user experience also, I notice zero improvement in speed,although I know there is, battery is pretty much the same for me so far too,saying all that though I'm still happy because I know OnePlus will continue to optimize

Have the op6 over a week now and the display is definitely better somewhat than the op3.
Do think that content has a lot to do with it,hd images look much more crisp than ones with standard definition.
For example the OnePlus stock wallpapers don't look that great and are washed out,but if I use wallpapers from apps like backgrounds and Zedge they look amazing

I also came from OP3. The display on OP6 is much much better. OP6 screen is better outdoor compare to the 3.
The OP6 is very fluid.

I am actually dissapointed with OP 6 display to the point I am thinking of selling the phone. What bothers me the most is the PWM brighteness regulation bellow 25% witch such a low frequency. But I read it is common for all OLEDs so if you were happy with OP 3 you will be with this one.

I also came from OP3. Compared the display side by side, and to be honest, there is barely a difference. The biggest difference is that the OP6 is better in daylight. I would say the display picture quality has not moved much since the 2016.
The biggest difference for me was the battery life. I simply love it.

Vivo NEX display light bleed issue.

Hey Guys, while I was watching something on the Netflix last night, spotted some hazy areas on the NEX and when I cross checked the same video on my Note 8, it was just fine on the Note 8. So, it was a pretty bad light leak on the NEX. I have put up a video of the same on the link below. check it out and also uploading an image of the same. Please let me know if anyone of you have this issue.

I’ve noticed too at my S9 plus unit that got earlier April.
Simple you’ve got used and live to that as there’s no other solution even getting replacement device or replace screen there’s no warranty will be free of that kind of issues.
There’s details review from Anandtech to that issue presented as I said Galaxy S9 series.
Take a look over here as I assume Vivo Nex also using AMOLED display from Samsung.
Only my OP5T does not show that issue with dark scenes at low light level brightness.

Well im just saying with above post that's those issue are common with AMOLED panel.
You can try your luck by replacement either whole device with new one or go service and being replaced by new panel
But as i said there is no warranty new device or panel will not have the same issue:fingers-crossed:

That's a shame. Because, I have had the note 8 for the last 9 months and luckily have had no issues. And I yeah I don't think the replacement is going to help, but just giving it a try and hoping I get a good panel

My Vivo NEX viewing angle not Good. If I see the screen straight (90*) screen looking something yellowish if I change the viewing angle a little it became cool white. Is it screen problem or display

Viewing angles on my phone looks pretty good. Yes there will be a slight shift of colour, but that happens on all the phones. So, I don't think it should be an issue unless its really bad on yours.

Thanks for reply, I noticed this problem when the whole screen in white colour only. I could not notice when screen filled with any other colours or images

I just tried your posted image I didn't notice any bleed. Sucks you must have gotten a bad panel. GL on the replacement let us know how it goes.

I got the replacement from Amazon and the new one seems fine

Anyone else notice that there is a very slight yellowish overtone to blacks in some apps like YouTube with dark mode turned on and chrome with dark? If you compare it to the note 10+ or s10+, you'll see that the blacks are a bit deeper on those. I ordered two phones and it's the same thing. Erica the technology nerd even pointed it out. Is it because of the new amoled screen? It's not really a big deal since it's slight, but pointing it out.

Yeah, I understand that there was a similar issue with the S20 ultra. Hopefully Samsung issue a software update for it. It's not a big deal since it's extremely slight on both units, but there is definitely consistency across all note 20 ultra I believe after coming across 3 units.

Are they snapdragon units you've come across?
I think it's a hardware issue. Don't think a ota will fix it

Yup, they are all snapdragon. All 3 pretty much look the same. It's very even on all 3 models I must say. No uneven coloring on whites or blacks. I can see why you and others would say it looks greenish. It looks like some mixture of green and yellow. It's not horrible to be honest, just looks a tad noticeable when comparing it to other devices like the punchier s10 plus or note 10 plus. It's like op said, if you don't compare them you don't really see it. Just wish Samsung had done better with the calibration of the screens. If it's hardware, then it's due to the new screens used. I am pretty sure most if not all snapdragon Note 20 ultra suffers from this.

Question Screen quality and brightness - Galaxy S22 Ultra vs Pixel 7 Pro

I just messed with the Pixel 7 pro at Best Buy before mine arrives tomorrow and I am a little alarmed at how bad the screen looks. I normalized the colors and settings on both the Pixel and my S22 Ultra and the Samsung is brighter, more readable, less dim, if that makes sense, than the Pixel. Even at low brightness when I was messing with things the Samsung had readable text. When I lowered the brightness on the Pixel it started to look just hazy and muddy. Both devices 1440p. The Pixel's auto brightness kept failing. It stuck with what I moved the slider to even after toggling the option. A reboot seemed to fix it temporaily.
Anyone who came from an S22 phone and has a Pixel now, what are your thoughts on the screen?
In terms of specs, Samsung is using a "Dynamic AMOLED 2x" panel, according to Phonearena, and the Pixel is using "LTPO AMOLED".
A side question, can you manually set your colors for text, background, etc? Or do you HAVE TO use the material you nonsense and let it pick for you? If so, anyone know if the Pixel 6 has mods available to make it more manual without using exposed?

A side question, can you manually set your colors for text, background, etc? Or do you HAVE TO use the material you nonsense and let it pick for you? If so, anyone know if the Pixel 6 has mods available to make it more manual without using exposed?

I had a S22 for a week or so and the wife and I had a 21 Ultra for over a year and a half. Neither of us have had any readability issues with our Pixels. She has a 6 Pro and I have the 7 Pro now. The only thing I didn't care for is the hollow feeling and sound when tapping. The auto brightness is a bit more responsive on the Samsung but it works fine here. Other than that we are very happy with the switch. My advice is to try it out for yourself and ignore the kool-aid floating around. I was concerned at first too.

LOL no, i dont have night mode enabled.
I know these things are subjective and what's technically correct might not be what people prefer. For instance a warmer colour temperature I think is what might actually be correct and accurate for a cinema/movies, but for general display use people I think usually prefer a cooler white over a warmer one. Like if i look at a sheet of A4 paper in daylight, it looks white as white, not with a yellow tint.
Its very difficult to photograph the difference. Human eyes are more sensitive the the difference in colour temp. However...
The one way i can think of to show the difference between a cooler (normal for most phones?) display such as my oneplue 7 pro is to take a photo of ONLY the oneplus's full white screen. I can then use photo as a custom white balance on my DSLR. So that the oneplus screen is what the camera will use as true white. Then we can see a direct comparrison against the Pixel 7 pro and see that its got a warmer/yellow colour temp/tint. I also adjusted the brightness of each phone to be the same by using the DSLR to measure the brightness.
See photo below. Untouched image on the top (oneplus on the left, pixel on the right). Then a saturation boosted image below that.
I think all google needs to do is add back the option to manually set a cooler colour temperature and also add an option to boost the saturation. I know this likely isnt "accurate"... but people like pretty colours lol and have probably got used to oversaturated OLED displays.

I personally love the display on this phone. No complaints about it.

I have my Pixel now and this is correct. The screen is like dim and drab compared to the galaxy at the same brightness level in exactly the same place. I have everything set up the same on both. 50% brightness on the Pixel doesn't look close to normal compared to 30% on the Galaxy, or what my Oneplus 8 Pro was either.
This is pretty disappointing. Still going to give it a chance for a week before I decide but this is noticeably worse.
The kicker with this is that Google provide almost zero customization, even compared to Oneplus. I am totally ok relying on mods and root, which I will be doing, but it needs to be at least possible.

I've set the colour temperature on my DSLR manually to 6500K. So anything that is 6500k should look white on the photo. Again, photo below comparrison from oneplus 7 pro and pixel 7 pro with the saturation boosted image on the bottom.
The pixel is defo yellower vs 6500k standard. The oneplus is bit too blue vs 6500k. Either way... yes. the pixel has a yellow tint vs what it probably should be (given no user settings for us to be able to change the colour temp settings.

Comparing the Pixel 7 Pro side by side with the Pixel 6 Pro and S22 Ultra. The S22 Ultra is brighter and more saturated which I think looks better. The 6 Pro and 7 Pro screen both have a duller "natural" look with the 6 Pro slightly red and the 7 Pro slightly yellow, though white looks acceptable on all three. The brightness on the S22 Ultra at 40% is similar to the 7 Pro at 60% and the 6 Pro at 80%.
We need to petition Google to bring back the Saturated mode they had on previous pixels.

Unless one has a particular need for absolute color fidelity, it all comes down to what pleases. Hence discussions like this can seem pointless. For those who care about the technical analyses, however, here's a link to DxOMark's Google Pixel 7 Pro Display test. The P7P scored 153 points for Display Color. (High at 163 points was the Sony Xperia 5 IV.)
Color measurements for the Google Pixel 7 Pro are close to those of the reference target, and thanks to its color fidelity, the new device provides realistic and pleasant color rendering. The Pixel 7 Pro adapts its color gamut to image content and is uniform in color. Unlike the Apple device, however, the Pixel 7 Pro does not adapt its white point to the lighting environment.

The Samsung S22 Ultra is tied for tenth, with the iPhone 13, at 136 points. For some reason, DxOMark didn't score the OnePlus 7 Pro's display. DxOMark did rank its selfie camera (22nd at 113 points vs. 145 for the iPhone 14 Pro, 142 for the P7P, and 133 for the S22 Ultra).

All I want is a setting to manually adjust the colour temperature.
Its a stupidly simple thing to implement and I think it might already be there, just disabled from us being able to change it?
If you go to settings, make sure developer options is enabled. Then search settings for 'Color temperature' You can see theres an option for 'cool colour temperature' that shows up in the search results. But if you click it, it takes you nowhere. So its there in the dev options, its just hidden so we cant actually get to it and enable it.
Also on the on the DxOMark tests, this bit is interesting >

I bet you someone can figure out how to access that color temp menu. Let's see if someone comes across this and figures that out. Do dialer codes work on this phone? On the s22 they don't.
