Is it possible to do any kind of backup on a full stock phone? Because it seems that EFS backup needs root, NANDroid need custom recovery. Root or custom recovery need unlocking. Unlocking need to wipe everything. Kind of a loop here

Hi,
I want to perform a full backup. I saw a guide but I need to install a recovery image. But to do this, I void the warranty.
It is possible to perform a full backup without this process? Or install a recovery image, and somehow uninstall this recovery image?
I can't find the right answer for me, I search a bit...
What I want is perform a full backup, backup the full state of the phone, so if I have a problem and have to use the warranty, I wont have any problems. I'm afraid that if I install a recovery image I will void the warranty and I will unable to revert this change.
My objective with this is that I don't have to worry about installing a custom ROM and tweak my Android and mess it up. With a full backup I just can restore everything, just like when I bought it (even the recovery part).
Thanks for any help you can give me.
I've had my sensation for a few weeks now. Still on stock room 2.3.3, no root.
I want to do a full backup and restore of the ROM, like a nandroid backup, before experimenting with other ROMs.
If I boot into the recovery/backup mode and do a backup, is that the same as a nandroid? Will it backup the entire ROM as is?
If so... if I then S-OFF, experiment with other ROMs, and then recover from that backup, would my phone still be S-OFF or would it revert back to S-ON?
I know the preferred method is to root and then do ClockWork Recovery, but I'm wondering if it's possible to do a full ROM backup before rooting.
Thanks.

A nandroid backup is done using ClockworkMod rcovery, which means you need to S-Off and install CWM before you backup. This will be a full backup of the phone at that point and would allow you to restore to that same point.
So what is the difference between the nandroid/ClockWork backup and the backup done after holding the volume down and starting the phone?
The latter only backs up contacts/settings/etc?

When you hold the Volume down and Power button, it takes you to the HBoot screen. If you select Recovery, that takes you to the Recovery mode. If you have ClockworkMod installed, you will get a recovery menu which has the backup and restore options ands this is a nandroid backup. I have never seen the standard HTC recovery screen, so I don't know if there is a backup/restore option or not. Every thing I have read about nandroid backups has been in reference to CWM and that's the way I have always done it on my 3 HTC devices.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm always eager to learn.
Hello, long time lurker here. Thinking about finally making the plunge to a custom rom.
I have a lot of apps with my saved data, high scores, etc.
Wondering if it's possible to unlock, root, install custom rom and retain my apps and their data.
Will Titanium Backup do this, or should I suck it up and reinstall everything?
Titanium is perfect for such things. But TB requires root. If you are on the 2.20 firmware, I'm not sure whether the new temp root exploit will allow you to run TB or not. If not, your data will be wiped out when you unlock the bootloader (before permanent root is achieved).
unlock --> root --> backup all apps including app data using tit backup batch mode --> flash custom ROM --> restore apps including app data using tit backup batch restore.. jsut ensure that you are not trying to backup & restore /system apps

Telus version, so don't need to exploit, but I know unlocking the bootloader will factory reset my device, trying to see if there's a way to do this before I unlock

That won't work. Unlocking the bootloader wipes data.

thanks for correcting
Oh wait, forgot about this little gem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671746
Follow that procedure, unlock the bootloader, restore data.
Now the trick is, on your version to get root you need to flash a rooted ROM (if I understand correctly). If you flash a stock rooted ROM, you may be able to do so without wiping data (which is normally recommended). Then you can run Titanium, and backup your app data.
Wiping data (factory reset) is normally advised when flashing ROMs. But if you flash a stock rooted ROM, it might be similar enough that it won't cause any serious bugs. Enough to get Titanium running. Then wipe, and flash a ROM of your choice.
That's just my thought anyway. Not 100% on any of that, since I didn't have to do it this way, personally.
Thanks! That sounds exactly like what I'm looking for.
Does it matter which stock rooted rom I use?
Such as: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1920424
So I would unlock, install recovery, install this rom. run titanium backup. install custom rom, restore with titanium backup?

I guess not a nandroid data backup. Since it requires twrp or cwm but u can use apps for backup that dont require root. Such as share cloud backup. Backup all apps and transfer them to pc the do what u have 2 do and then use apk manager app to batch install the apk files. But this backs up apps only not data not files.
Is there a necessity to install a custom recovery when I'm running on stock rom? (never changing to custom)
If I factory reset my phone and try to restore everything, only titanium backup is needed right? the system apps are the same so titanium backup would restore them. In this case is a custom recovery necessary?
I'm on android 4.4 and rooted but bootloader is locked. I understand the differences of titanium backup and custom recovery but I wanna know if custom recovery is needed on devices with stock rom+titanium backup

If you are rooted then yes its always a good idea to have custom recovery so you can make a nandroid backup of your stock setup, then if later you have issues that you can't get straight you can restore the nandroid and be back to normal, nandroid backups are backups of your entire device, titanium backup only backs up user data(apps you've installed, app data, contacts, pics, videos, music and things like that).
Titanium backup does not back up your boot, modem, system or recovery partitions and those are the important parts, the stuff titanium backup only saves non essential stuff.
If you don't install custom recovery and you have issues then your only option would be factory reset or reflashing stock firmware, these would wipe any data that you want to keep.
I'm going to be receiving a Nexus 5 i ordered off eBay soon and of course i want to root it and unlock everything but i'm unsure how i can back everything up just in case. I have only rooted 1 phone before and i didn't back anything up so i have no idea what the process is or what certain things i need to backup. Can anyone tell me each thing i need to backup and how to do it ? Like the bootloader, and rom/img/recovery or whatever its all called.
Unlocking the bootloader will automatically wipe the phone; therefore, unlock the bootloader, flash TWRP, set up the phone, and use TWRP to create a nandroid backup.
Check out the general forum for tutorials about unlocking the bootloader, flashing img files in fastboot, and backups.
there are official Google factory images for that, no need to backup. Only thing i would suggest to backup in twrp is EFS partition. this is unique partition for every single phone, it contains IMEI, and other connectivity stuff Good luck
