Hi all, im new to the forum, first of all let me clarify that im a complete noob when it comes to anything software relate on mobile devices other that hard resetting a phone/tablet.
So, the thing is that i found an old tablet belonging to my younger brother, he got it by a governent plan that years ago provided highschool students with free tablets made for learning and stuff.
I had it flashed by the repair service so i can use it but turns out it has this weird android 7.0 version that comes with some preinstalled apps from the government.
Being so old and working with and equally old version thats also custom made for this devices makes it super clunky and slow to use, more so for drawing and sketching wich is my ultimate goal with it.
I was wondering if i could use some guidance or advice to see first if the actual SO can be replaced, and two, how to do it and wich ROM could give me a more modern/usable experience.
Thanks in advance, ill make sure to provide any info needed

If anything exists for the device, you can find it by doing a search for:
"Custom ROMs for (your specific device model number)"
You can find the device model number by going to system settings>about>model number or system settings>about>hardware info>model number. If the search using the specific model number doesn't reveal anything for your specific device, it almost certainly means there is nothing for that device.

Thanks for the reply, soo what i understand is that unless there is a ROM somewhere on the internet specifically made for my device i wont be able to do anything to upgrade the SO?
TBH ive been looking for that before, checked the model number but it just says A102, seems like theyre custom made devices or a rework of an existing one to mass produce it and make it more fitting for teenagers.
So far all the info i could get was the manufacturer, wich name is Haier, then some weird documentation hinting the real name of the model was Haier Business A102 but idk, and here are the specs from the model too.

Yes, typically, you can only install an OS that is built for your specific device. There is also the possibility of installing a GSI(generic system image) that has been made for devices with the same hardware/CPU architecture. If there is a GSI available for devices with your architecture, you may be able to install it. I'm not familiar with the specifics of finding a compatible GSI for a device or how to install it as I've never used one. This would be a good place to start.

With great pleasure i read today that Notion Ink Adam tablet is available for preorder. i want to ask some questions
1. What operating system it will running? Rumours refer Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) is the operating system
2. If the above is true will it support upgrade to Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) when it will be ready?May be is running a custom version of Android or stock one?
3. About 3G does it cover GSM 900,1800 and UMTS 2100?
4. Will google market be available?
The tablet hasn't even passed the FCC. As of now, it doesn't even exist in a form available for consumers. The site also allows you to provide your billing info without providing a shipping address, which should set off a big red scam alert flag in your head.

Thanks for the info my friend.I didnt know that it did not passed FCC.Really now i wonder why they start taking money from people. That's stupid ,not to say more bad words.
I think i must look for alternatives.
Many people like me, who don't search for info before buying something, are easy to get fraud.
Not a scam

I beg to differ with you guys. Its genuine and The pixel Q version of the tabs are already sold out and they showcased this device in CES much before you have had any clues about Galaxy tab or any other for that matter. Between I have visited their office (Bangalore, India) personally 2 days back.
They have launched a developer section too. And if you talk technically then they have managed to solve android app's inability to handle large screens.

Here's the original report, and even though the "billing info without shipping info" has been fixed, it still doesn't change the fact that it hasn't even passed the FCC. I think I'd entrust my money with an actual well-known manufacturer with a product that I can see and touch before I buy.
Why is it that the pessimist is always the first to respond. Whatever. On the FCC issue, I vaguely remember that they did something so that you can't find it but I can't remember where I found that.

Well, when you're dealing with money for a luxury product that has several alternatives it's okay to be pessimistic. Better safe than sorry in a situation like this, no?

Here, have some valuable information:
"We have done something with our FCC application and it will be little difficult for you to find us!"
to answer your questions:
1. It will most likely run on 2.2 at first but "Eden is extremely compatible with 2.3" this implies that they are working on it.
2."This was a big step in converting your Android to a tablet version OS (and one of the updates coming in 3.0)" I'm not sure what this implies, but it might mean we will get 3.0
3.I have no idea, the whole 3g thing is a little confusing
4."Will it support the Google Market place? Or do you have your own market place/App Store that you are developing?
-We will have our own market place."
however, it probably won't take long for the devs to get the market on it.

yeah I totally agree on the fact that it is okay to be pessimistic, but most of what you heard that makes the adam sound shady came from one series of articles on android police. I'm not sure, but I bet that if they tried they could make any company sound shady. Anyway, if Notion ink sounds shady, it's not really their fault, they are extremely inexperienced. It is a company run by 20-something year olds with no business experience straight out of college. They're bound to make some mistakes.
I have seen some threads for kids apps. I am interested in finding/building a kids ROM.
My child has a prepaid SIM card and RAZR to be used for certain situations. I would want to be able to let my child carry the phone all the time but restrict what numbers could be called.
So my idea, which can't be an original one, is leverage Android power to install a rooted ROM but run in user mode when I give it to my child. User mode could restrict calling to the phone book only or restrict wi-fi/data access; basically anything that you wanted to restrict or remove. Maybe there could be a ROM builder.
I have many scenarios in mind but maybe they could all be solved by software apps instead of getting into a custom ROM? I'm tech savvy, but haven't ever done a ROM. If the answer is to develop a custom ROM, what device should I choose that would get the most community support? I figure it would be a low end phone, since the point is to make a children's rom.
May I ask how old is your child?
[Sig] dId you know? If you Insert a Coin on your Desire, then it levels up to HD, Z or S :[/Sig]
i was thinking of my son when you mentioned this, it is a great i dea, and i also thought if the original att kid's phone that was out a few years back. it was revamped and it sucked. but good luck on either building one or have some one make one ( put a bounty on it?)
Phones and ROMs
My child is 8 years old. I figure in a few years that it would be fine, but it seems like there would be more of a market for this.
I would put up a bounty for it but I'd prefer to make this a community effort too.
So I will change tack here and ask what the best ROM might be for me to start with and what phones might be recommended? I'm figuring that CM would be easiest to start with, generically?
Thoughts?
I think that is a very good idea.
A good part of that could be accoimplished with a kids theme on an existing ROM.
im sorry but the RAZR is a dumb-phone! it doesnt support 3rd party modding. im afraid you are mistaking the word 'ROM' and actually don't know what it means! You will have no luck finding such ROM for the RAZR... A bootloader of any sort does not exist!
You need a smartphone if you want such a job done, but it requires a investment into a smartphone which are generally more expensive and not intended for 'kids'
I understand...
@olyloh6696: Thanks for looking in on the thread!
You misunderstood what I was explaining. She _currently_ has a RAZR. I want to figure out what the best GSM _android_ phone would be to do the project I'm describing would be. I would of course have to get the new phone; I do understand that the RAZR does not support android (dumbphone).
Any thoughts on phone model or something out there like this already?

hi
well i guess the best option for a relatively cheap phone (that has android) is the zte blade (in my sig) it is a british phone, but gsm, so i think it should work in the us. if you read reviews for it, it has specs of the desire, nexus one, etc in a cheap budget range. read some revies on it! it also cost £100. Not sure what your budget is though. before you set out to buy the phone, you may need to look up a rom that supports the requirements you want, or you could request one/build your own.
good luck
Unrelated, but the RAZR does support modding lol. Back in the day, pre-Android, I used to hack the hell out of my Razr. There's even a hidden feature called Club Lights that uses the phone's microphone to detect music and make the lights on the phone go with the beat. Youtube it.
That's a great idea... it would be great on a tablet too.
I'm always worried that my son is going to click around in the market and download tons of apps without know it.
Remove Dialer.app, replace with custom Dialer.app
Is the source for the Dialer.app known, i.e. part of the main trunk of the Android sources? I was just thinking that it might not be too hard to just modify that original source to limit it only to the "contacts" tab, that way you can only call the contacts tab.
Another feature I thought of is using some kind of Dynamic DNS client to be able to dial in to the phone.
I was thinking that there could be a "phone home" app that would call home and report the currently used minutes and GPS coordinates, or similar.
Just trying to get the features set worked out and find out if there is existing apps that do this stuff.
2018, quick google search for Kids Custom ROM.... dead thread no progress. There is definitely a market for this, since it's easy to shove a phone into an OtterBox like case and let them have at it with safe guards. My kid has had an Ipad since age 2 without issue. Now she asks for my phone on occasion (years later). It would be easier to just take a custom ROM shove it on a cheap device and give it to her.
Sure, I am a minority, definitely but I can't consider myself the only person who would want to do this.
This is what I'm looking for my child. I'm a software engeneer but I've never works on Android. I think it's not a great works for an Android developer.
I'll follow this post for news.
digging this one up again. anyway to take something like at Nexux 5x and put a totally stripped down version of android on it to achieve something like the lightphone?

Per capita, there are very few people that actually root or flash custom ROMs, the number of kids that could/would use such a ROM is even less than that, this means it is not worth a developers time and hard work to build a ROM for this purpose, especially considering the plethora of different devices out there in the world. There would not be enough kids using "this" or "that" device with "this" or "that" custom ROM. To be as convenient for kids as what you are asking about, there would have to be a "kids ROM" for a large number of devices. This is not a reasonable expectation by any standard.
Add to that, the fact that rooting devices and flashing ROMs can quickly go bad if the user is not familiar with certain aspects of using a device that is rooted or flashed with a custom ROM, this makes for some rather difficult issues to solve due to user error, ignorance and inexperience of the user.
If you want a "safe" or "basic" ROM for a device, you'll have to learn how to build it yourself because I can promise you that no developer is willing to put that much time and effort into building ROMs that will only be used by a small number of users.

Do a google search for:
"How to root (your model number)"
If that doesn't find anything then there isn't a known rooting method for your device.

We've been able to aquire temp with previous versions of kingroot and iroot but the device just reboots a couple minutes afterwards and looses root. Unable to access bootloader through ADB as well. Cant seem to get much to work... ADB oem unlock doesn't work either and if you try ADB reboot bootloader it just does a normal restart.

If it's like other ZTE devices that I've encountered then the reason you can't do anything with adb and bootloader is because fastboot/flash mode was removed from the device by your carrier. That's why I suggest that root users avoid using ZTE's crappy devices. Stop getting cheap android devices thinking that you'll find custom support for it. Most of the time the cheap mid-low end devices don't get custom development and if they do get custom development it isn't much at all. In general, ZTE devices aren't worth messing with.

Even if they didn't remove it, there'd probably still wouldn't be any development for it, it's just not the kind of device that developers are interested in. You'd probably have root and that's it, no TWRP or ROMs.
If that's the kind of thing you're interested in, then you need to get a more popularly used brand and model of device. It doesn't have to be a flagship device but pretty close, there are plenty of reasonably priced devices that have plenty of development, just gotta research a device before you get it to see what is available for it before you get it, or get a device that is certainly going to be of interest to developers.

I've had low end devices that "just happened" to have development of all kinds also. This does not mean that all of that development was done by "real" developers, most ROMS are ports or modifications of work that the "real" developers do. Most are created by members that own the device and know or learn just enough to squeeze out a port, fork or kang of someone else's work.
But that isn't the point, the point is that low end devices aren't "typically" chosen by developers, that's an indisputable fact.
If you'll take a look around, you'll see that there are considerably more higher end brands and models supported than the low-mid range devices. Usually, the low end devices that do get development are devices that someone owned and couldn't find any ROMS for so they took it on themselves to learn just so they could update their device, these are not what I'm calling "real" developers, the real developers are the ones that did the work that provided the pieces used by those learning.
Those that provide support from start to finish in every aspect of the coding involved are the developers I'm talking about, without them, no device gets support. They are not very likely to choose these types of devices.
I've spent enough time in the noob threads helping members with these kinds of devices, in the grand scheme, they usually don't have any options. A lot of them get frustrated with not finding development for their exact model and flash something from a similar device "hoping" it will work. It usually doesn't and it's guys like me that have to help them straighten out their mess, trust me, what I say about low-mid devices is very valid, the thousands I've been involved in helping find what they need is more than enough proof.
And I said "in general" ZTE isn't worth it. Just because you mention one ZTE model that had support doesn't take away from that statement. I can't count how many ZTE devices I've seen bricked because the device wasn't supported and the users still tried flashing it.
I can't say the same for Samsung, Nexus, HTC or One Plus, just to name a few. Get the picture?

Flagship devices get the lions share of development, yes, SOME of the low-mid devices get support, I never said they didn't get support at all across the board. I said that "most"(as in 75-80%) of them don't(leaving only 20-25% of the low end getting support), including the low end Samsung and others. But when you look at the higher end and flagships, it's more like 90-95% of them do get support, leaving only 5-10% of them not getting support. Do you see the gap? Statistically, the odds of getting support are against you with low-mid devices but there the few exceptions, it just depends on exactly which low end device. That's what I meant in my first reply when I said "research the devices before you buy them to see if they have support" or buy higher end flagship devices, the ones that are almost certain to get support. It's just a fact dude. Most serious developers are too hardcore into hardware and software to settle for something on the low-mid range and they pretty much only develop for the devices they own or have on hand, that is why the chances of low-mid devices getting support are "on the whole" not nearly as likely as the more popular devices.

I have a friend who has bought a fake lenovo clone with the model code S850c. Because the firmware it shipped with was fulled to the brim with bloatware and popups, he asked me to flash another ROM using SP Flash tool. Since it is not a legit model, i only found a couple of ROMS which actually worked.
In between firmware flashes, i had to do a "Format all and flash", which also resulted in the IMEI numbers originally binded with the phone to be deleted. However, I am not able to restore them, because i ommited writing them down before flashing the phone. As a result, the phone recongnises the SIM card but is unable to register to any network. Naturally, i went into engineering mode and punched in the 2 IMEI numbers located under the battery(it is dual SIM), but they must be invalid, since the phone will still not register and imei.info cannot recongnise them.
As a last resort, i also tried to input IMEI numbers from old working phones i have in my drawer, but i still experience the same behaviour. Is there any way to find the original IMEI numbers again or i am doomed? Also, with known working IMEI failed to work?
Only ways xda will advise is to restore a backup that should have been made or to return it to the oem.
Messing with the imei in anyway is illegal in most countries so the above is the only ways xda allows to be talked about.
Thanks for the tip, but I can provide proof that my statements are true and the devices are not stolen, if that is required. I am by no means a thief, i just want to correct a mistake i made in the first place.
In addition, what i asked is about another way to retrieve the IMEI that ORIGINALLY came with the device in order to restore it, without having a backup beforehand. As i mentioned before, the ones under the battery are NOT blacklisted, they are simply fake ones.
With that said, i understand and respect XDA's rules and policies.

I am sure you can. That wasn't a question really. The biggest issue is that any of the tools that might even help you are illegal so you understand the hard place xda is in. Your issue will be most likely the fact that it is a knock off which will mean that it doesn't have a valid imei to begin with. See if you can track down a stock OS for it in another site. (you won't find one here) and see if flashing it will bring it back. Other then that I would send it back and get it replaced but to be honest, with clones you are best off not touching them.
ok i see, thank you so much for your help! I hope i did not sound agressive in my reply, but i was really desperate for a solution
Best regards!
Hello,
I have att. I have the XSMax. I want to go back to Android after about a year of hell (by the time my 12 month lease is up). I would like to be able to JailBreak and flash custom roms if possible. Here are my options..can these be jailbroken and custom roms used? All my phones are leases through ATT on a 12 month basis (I get bored plus I destroy the batteries).
Thank you.

When dealing with android, it''s not called jailbreaking, it's called rooting. Jailbreak iOS only.
Also, jailbreaking iOS and rooting android is not even close to the same thing, not that the specific matters, I'm just clarifying. Plus, it will help reduce confusion when discussing topics of android with experienced android users.
Whether or not the devices you listed can be rooted or not and whether or not custom recovery and custom ROMs can be used, will depend on exactly which specific model numbers you have.
To find this with each device, try these search suggestions(do these for each individual device).
"How to root (the specific device model number)"
And
"TWRP for (the specific device model number)"
"Custom ROMs for (the specific device model number)"
If anything exists for the devices you have, those searches should find them, if not, then there may not be anything for your devices.

I knew it was calling rooting. Not sure why I said JailBreaking. I use to root my s3. I think it has become a habit after a little over a year of saying Jailbreaking. My apologies.
