Hello,
I have a TC55 from Motorola Solutions (i.e. the enterprise division that does not belong to Google). It is a rugged phone with a big battery (4400 mAh), but certainly not the sleekest design. Not sure if there is much interest in this kind of device, and I am certainly no developer - but in case anyone is investigating the TC55, here are two things I found so far:
It does not come with any Google apps: no Maps, no Gmail, no Play store and so on.
It is easily rooted with Framaroot using the Gandalf exploit.
(I cannot post this info into the Framaroot thread due to my low post count).
Anyway, maybe this helps someone. I will be happy to try to answer any questions about the TC55, but keep in mind I am no pro and I am not keen in messing around in its internals much more than I have done already.

I heard my company is planning to go with these soon for entry level supervisors such as myself. I'm trying to figure out exactly what it is. All the specs and brochures from Motorola keep calling it a mobile computer in a smartphone "form factor" but never actually call it a phone. I didn't see anything in any of the specs to lead me to believe for sure that it was a phone or if it was just an Android computer in a smartphone form factor.
Anyway, I just wanted to confirm, that, you're certain this is a phone, correct?
Thanks.

Yes, definitely. You can call and get called, and you can send and receive SMS. It also supports wired headsets, and it is supposed to work with Bluetooth headsets, though I do not have any to test.

Thanks for the info but it looks like mine is going to be crippled.
Sort of a let-down really. Yes, it "can" be a phone. Or without a sim card it can be a really powerful Android based mobile computer. That's what it is going to be for most of us. Only a few supervisors with area management approval are going to get units with the phone features working. Still cool. Just not as cool as I'd thought it was going to be.

I see, sorry to hear that. It sounds weird to me to do that, but then again I have no clue about this type of work.
Maybe the crippling could be worked around or undone by people with good Android knowledge - but I suppose it might not be the best idea to go against company policy.

I don't think they're doing anything all that special to cripple it. They just won't all have sim cards or a cell plan. Pretty much as simple as that.
I won't be doing anything to circumvent that though or rooting it or anything like that. It's not like it's a gift and it belongs to me or anything. After almost 22 years, I've kind of grown to like my job and getting a paycheck every two weeks.I'd kind of like to keep it for another 15 or 20 years. Who knows, maybe my manager will decide that I need cell service with mine.
I work for a large automaker in the U.S. We have over 2.8 million square feet under roof. Personally, I can be anywhere on in the plant, on the roof, in pits & sub-basements underneath or anywhere on or near the 50 acre plant site at any given time. A lot of what I need to do on a daily basis is through our intranet portal. They're putting in something like 500 new wi-fi repeaters/extenders all around the plant as well. They're purchasing these for over 300 first line supervisors at my site alone. I'm pretty sure they're doing this corporate-wide so I hate to think what they're spending on these things as a corporation. I'm sure it would bankrupt many small nations! In addition to giving us portal access away from the desk, these are meant to replace our aging industrial radio system. As expensive as these are, they're still much cheaper than $1.5 to $2k per person for a radio that has no other built-in functionality and these do seem pretty ruggedized.
Still a shame about the phone functionality though.

Can you see what browser it comes with? Can you install (untrusted) APKs directly without rooting it?
FYI, in case anyone's wondering, there is a version with Google apps on the way (if it isn't already orderable).

Browser is a standard one, which comes with other devices. Name is Browser.apk and version is 1.0.9
It's possible to install unsigned APK's without rooting.
google account
Hi,
I got stucked with trying to get google calendars from my google account to TC55.
I found one solution to setup google account as a corporate one, but it's not available anymore due to change in google policy.
I can setup google mail via email account, but that doesn't bring me my calendars to the device.
I tried to install gapps but without success.
Is there any other way?
Thanks.
Motorola work on google apps for TC55.There is in beta.

No idea, I haven't tried. As far as I understand gapps are usually installed via flashing a zip from recovery, and the stock recovery of the TC55 does not have that option, it only allows reflashing a whole image, if I understand it correctly. Either way, I have come to appreciate the open source alternatives and do not want to get Google on my phone, so I will not try, sorry.
However, going by this thread over at the Motorola support forum, it seems it won't take long until there is official gapps support:
https://developer.motorolasolutions.com/thread/4989
Motorola has now released a TC55-firmware with Google apps. Here are the release notes:
https://atgsupportcentral.motorolasolutions.com/content/emb/docs/ReleaseNotes/Release%20Notes%20-%20%20TC55_RevAPlus_GMS_01%2074G_v10.htm
According to the support email they sent me, to get the actual release you need to perform the following arcane ritual:
Resolution Type is : Software Download
Resolution Id is : 95562
Resolution Title is : TC55 Update Image v1.74 with GMS (Google Mobile Service) Release Note & Factory Reset & Enterprise Enabler package
restrictedSW :
T55N0JGMVRUEN17400.zip 321 MB TC55 OS Recovery Update package
T55N0JGMVAUEN17400.apf 321 MB TC55 OS update package file for deployment using MSP
If you require access to OS files for TC55 1.74 GMS then call the local Support Desk and provide following information:
a. Site ID
b. Serial #(s)
c. Phone #
d. Customer name (First and Last)
e. E-mail address

Don't ask me what the local support desk number is, or the site ID, or why they have to make this so complicated.
Hi Elanguescence,
I think I screwed up my tc55 by enabling the multiuser function without first creating the white list. Now all the users (with admin rights) does not have access to all the programs, including Applock Administrator and Multiuser administrator.
To cut things short, do you know of a way to reset the device? I don't mind setting it to factory default and start over. I've googled it and some said to launch Rapid Deployment and scan a barcode from there... but my Rapid Deployment just says "Service Not Ready, Please Wait" and get stuck there.
Any help appreciated. Thank you.
Any TC55 users here? Should be getting my unit w/ GMS soon... How do you guys like it?
Is the bootloader locked?

Hey!
I want to Buy one TC55 for me. Normally i hate Android and the Google stuff on the Phone but some Motorola Salesman told me there is a version with out.
Now i use an Sybian Device. That mean i am "offline" the hole time and when i need Internet the Phone connect the the Internet.
So how about that phone can i work "offline" to?
I will also use an VPN Tunnel to block on my backend all Connnection i dont want. Does all Data trough this VPN Tunnel ?
How about the Barcode Scanning does it work good?
I know for 2D i need to use the Cam but how works it when i am in some other Application?
Nobody?
Ok. I just bought a TC55 from a Friend and I was wondering if someone would post the update to get GSM and the Factory Reset packages. I went to the page and it requires all the information posted above before. Mine is rooted, but i am trying to install GAPS but the recovery is the basic and cannot. I manually installed Google Play and the Google Play Services but Google Play services keep crashing and the Play Store will not connect, any ideas ?
the are 2 versions one with google s... service and the other without.
So i belive you have the first?
(Can i ask you some question about that phone?)
UPDATED 8/20/14
Some minor changes were made to the process to get the Bluetooth API available. I confrmed this after re-flashing my device.
I have sucessfully unblocked access to the bluetooth stack on the Tizen Wearable SDK. This feature was removed from the wearable SDK and I have discovered how to re-enable this. This will allow you to write apps that can communicate with any available bluetooth device using the Tizen Wearable SDK.
1. Download this file from tizens website - download.tizen.org/releases/2.2.1/latest/repos/tizen-main/armv7l/packages/armv7l/wrt-plugins-tizen-0.4.80-1.1.armv7l.rpm
2. From a command prompt cd into your folder where sdb.exe is kept. (ie. tizen/tools/ )
3. Enter command ./sdb root on to put gear 2 into root mode.
4. Next push downloaded file above onto your gear. (ie. ./sdb push ~/Downloads/wrt-plugins-tizen-0.4.80-1.1.armv7l.rpm /tmp/ )
(There is a space between the tizen file and the /tmp/ which places the file into the tmp folder on the gear 2)
5. Shell into your gear 2. (ie. ./sdb shell )
6. At the command prompt, make the file system writable. (ie. mount -o remount,rw / )
7. Change to the tmp directory and install the rpm file. (ie. cd tmp ) (ie. rpm -i --force --nodeps --replacefiles wrt-plugins-tizen-0.4.80-1.1.armv7l.rpm
8. If successful you should have NO OUTPUT and only a new command prompt.
9. Type reboot on the command prompt on the gear 2 and it restarts.
10. Start the Wear IDE and try to use the Bluetooth API Calls and it should work.
Below is a sample Wear App
var adapter = tizen.bluetooth.getDefaultAdapter();
console.log(adapter.address);
Before this would result in a null listing on the console, but now you should have the bluetooth address in the console. I have verified discovery works and other Bluetooth functions.
Happy Building!!

You must do this in Ubuntu 12.04 as the building tools GBS and Gerritt work only with Linux.
Step 1 - Download the Developer Tools for Tizen including Gerritt Build System (GBS) and Gerritt. Register for Gerritt access on Tizens webpage and configure your computer to build rpm packages.
Step 2 - Download the wrt-plugins-tizen.git package from gerritt under framework and build it successfully on your computer.
Step 3 - Make sure your gear 2 is rooted and using sdb, push the recently compiled wrt-plugins-tizen.rpm onto a folder on the gear 2.
Step 4 - Using sdb, login to the shell on the gear 2. (ex: ./sdb shell)
Step 5 - CD to the folder with the new rpm wrt-plugins-tizen.rpm file is located.
Step 6 - Change the filesystem on the gear to read/write from read only. Ex: Sh$ mount -o remount,rw /
Step 7 - Install the wrt-plugins-tizen.rpm over the already installed version. Ex: Sh$ rpm -ivh wrt-plugins-tizen.rpm -nodeps --force
Step 8 - Restart your Gear 2 and you should be able to call the methods and functions for Bluetooth in the Tizen
(Ex: var adapter = tizen.bluetooth.getDefaultAdapter();
console.log(adapter.address);
Before this would result in a null listing on the console, but now you should have the bluetooth address in the console. I have verified discovery works and other Bluetooth functions.

Skin, my man, could this result in a ROM with direct control over BT profiles? In that case, direct connection between Gear and iPhone could be possible.
BT hands free profile is already supported by the iPhone. Enabling other profiles on the watch could maybe lead to enabling notifications.

iOS 7 is supposed to automatically expose notifications to BT. No extra software on the iPhone side is required, as long as the correct profiles are supported by the watch.
One example I personally have used is the i'mwatch.

Was you using Bluetooth stack as well switching over from ios to stack mode with your gear pre set up for another device . I can say that my iPhone 4 jailbroken on ios 7 works as hands free without having to reset . That's my gear 1 with tizen 3.0 . I know of the iPhone 4 doesn't have nfc to connect with the gear 1 via tag mode but without it it still connects with simple pairing
As for my gear 1 no matter what I try I can't even get it full or haLA function on my evo3d (I know jb is recommended minimum) on 2.3.4, 2.3.6, 4.0.2 4.0.4, 4.1 or 4.4.2 sense stock roms or cyanogen. Romeos, or miui
And my s4 running any cyanide kitkat either
I've tried various gear stubs. Samsung app stores and gear managers, goproviders etc.
My s3. Not a problem
. I even have trouble with some variations of aosp. Aokp. Pac. Slim. Cyanogen. Miui and even some tw roms on my s5

Gav I am not sure I am following u here dude.
Let me tell u my experience.
I only have a borrowed HTC one and have as we'll tried some iPhones (never used BTstack cydia tweak) with the Gear 1.
I can connect the HTC through Gear Manager (can provide the links where I found it and the stub if u like me to) without a problem.
The HTC is stock 4.4.2 not rooted.
If the watch is reset to factory I definitely need the HTC otherwise it is useless.
However, after it connect the Gear and the HTC and have access to the watch settings (not anymore stuck in the how to pair video screen) I can also connect an iPhone 4 (no BT 4.0) as well as an iPhone 5 and my iPhone 5S. As long as I am have not installed the airbluesharing tweak which somehow messes the BT stack of the iPhone (I think).
However the iPhone thinks that the (Tizen stock or modded running) Gear is simply a hands free device, simple as that. Althoufgh they are connected, on the gear side it seems that there is no connection.
What actually works I have listed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2789095
My opinion (I am not a dev by any means) is that basic hands free functionality is achieved outside the Gear Manager whereas all other BT profiles are somehow tied to that God damned manager.
Then again the current thread is talking about unlocking the full BT stack of the Tizen running Gear, if I understood OK.
If that is the case, all possibilities are open because as I have already told u I have seen the i'mwatch communicate with the Gear with absolutely no app on the iPhone side.
Hope that helps!

Well tomorrow I'm removing my kali Linux and I'm gonna install Ubuntu and look into that be profile on the gear side.
I meant the Cydia tweak btstack has options to use it as stack. None or ios. And with air blue and stack. On stack I can connect hands free mode. Without the set up video. Showing.
With the other devices I was just stating how even with Samsung devices it's difficult to communicate.
I'm gonna do more research in to ios Bluetooth. And the gears profiling of it tomorrow. IL report back here with findings

No mate sorry not yet it took most of my day to download the tizen gear source code. And the u Ubuntu sdk and the Ubuntu iso. and create new mirrors. . As well figuring out to flash and use custom ring tones. I got the software downloaded for ubuntu but to install it would have disabled my network adapter temporarily but I didn't want to do that cos of the painstaking low speed of the tien source code. By the time it finished with everything else I was doing I didn't have enough time to install it and play around. But tomorrow afternoon IL get on with it. I've got all the software needed.

Correct, that's called the Apple Notification Center service and is obviously not supported by the Gear.
The standard Bluetooth profile is called the Alert Notification Profile and is not supported by either the Gear or the iPhone.

I am not sure if this is all that is required.
For example pairing a device with the Gear will make it popup the "factory reset needed" dialog. The source of that dialog seems to be com.samsung.bt-syspopup. Uninstalling it results in no "factory reset needed" prompt, but also no Bluetooth prompts at all..... Maybe one could install the stock org.tizen.bt-syspopup one.
Using Gear Manager on Emulated device (Bluestacks, Genemotion, Andy and AVD)
Hello all,
I have recently been without a Android phone for a while but i am trying to use the "Gear Manager" from a Emualtor/Virtual device like the ones mentioned in the subject of the post
So far it has been the easiest to get Samsung Apps and all its addons and the Gear manager software to run and work flawlessly on Andy Emulator
Andy cannot use Bluetooth though and from what i managed to understand neither does Genemotion.
Since the Gear 2 uses Bluetooth 4 LE im not sure that even if it did use BT that it would be compatible with any of my computer set ups
since my gear is rooted and i have a feeling this can be possible somehow i decided to ask the forum
Is there a way to tunnel when connecting the Gear 2 to the PC via USB to the Emulator so that the gear manager would pick it up to sync it.
or is there any thought to an alternative that can yield the same end result
in the Case of Andy (emulator) would i need to set up both sides through Terminal to find each other ? or bridge them through Windows... just throwing out thought here
Anyway would love for the forums thoughts on the subject or tips/help...
Anyone who received the Samsung Gear S3 pair it with any Iphone yet? Curious about your thoughts and if you still find the watch useful with its limited functionality.
Thanks,
Dan

I've coupled a Gear S3 with the beta version of the GearManager on iPhone SE. It worked much more than with the Gear S2. The system from the S3 obviously is much more sophisticated and tuned to the GearManager. So if an official version appears the combination Gear S3 with the iPhone obviously will be quite powerful.
Unfortunately no one can say when Samsung finally released an official version of GearManager.
Hello,
I'm in the same case than the author.
I have actually an iPhone 6S which I don't want to resell because I like it and it is not old enough to change for another.
Nevertheless, i'm really interesting by buying the Samsung Gear S3 since i'm looking for a watch with a good design (which doesn't look like a "gadget" as it the case for the Apple Watch).
I want to know if it is possible to pair the iPhone 6S with the Samsung Gear S3. I'm aware of the beta of Gear Manager for iPhone but i don't know which fonctions i will lose with this app, which function I can use and if it is still worth to buy this watch which cost 400$ (We can currently have it for 320€ in France).
I want it in order to receive SMS and phone call, be able to answer phone call and mb SMS too (it is not a big fault if i can't answer SMS). I also want to use the GPS functionality but I don't know if it is even possible with an iPhone pairing. Same for spotify, messenger notifications, chronometer.
Moreover, I didn't find a lot of information about the sport fonctionnality. They are talking about running but i'm doing workout 3 times per week and I wanted to follow/track my training with the watch if it is possible.
To sum up, that is my questions :
1- Which important fonctionnality should I don't be able to access with iPhone pairing ?
2- Which important fonctionnality should I be able to use with iPhone pairing ?
3- Is it possible to receive SMS ? To answer it ? Same question with phone calls.
4- Will I be able to use GPS fonctionnality ? Spotify fonctionnality ? Messenger ? Chronometer ?
5- Can I track my workout with the sport fonctionnality ?
6- Is it worth to buy it for an iPhone ?
Thanks,
Regards,
Ketaz
It is hard to say what funtionality will be finally available with pair Samsung watch - iPhone, as we have currently only beta Gear manager for iOS. Notifications and S-Health are working. There is access to the Samsung Store, but currently only free applications are available. I think that there will be no possibility to answer sms or calls, because iOS do not allow such actions from 3rd party apps via Bluetooth. But from the other side if Samsung will allow to install standalone apps directly on watch, it would be some oportunity if only pairing with iOS will not block it. There is no ETA of final Gear Manager for iOS, so we have a lot of speculations and nothing is confirmed.

Thanks for the answers.
Well actually it is possible to answer calls with every bluetooth accessories so it seems weird to not be able to do it with the samsung gear.
It's already a good thing that we can have notifications...
Should i be able to track my workout with S Health ?
Which free applications are available ?
@Ketaz: 1. to 5.: I think most will work and your desired functions are largely fulfilled.
At 6.: When will appear the official GearManager: then in any case YES!

Do you have a source please ? :victory:
Source (and my/our hope) is the last update info in TestFlight (dev.tool for GearManager iOS):
" Samsung Gear S 1.6.16111702 (1.6.16111702) for iOS is ready to test
What To Test:
- General bug fixing - Fix a crash when login to the Samsung account from Samsung App Store Known Issue: - At the menu Home -> Samsung App Store, back button not working to come back to the GM Home. This issue should be fixed by 2nd December (12/02)."

Nice ! Do you use it with an iPhone ?
If yes, can you try it with spotify please ? If it's working I buy it 100% sure
Spotify on my iPhone I can already control with Gear S2
OK you convinced me thank for the answers
... but I can not tell if the special spotify-app works on the Gear S2 with an iPhone. You can only control (next-back-stop) the music, which is currently running on the iPhone.
Hey folks,
I'm trying to trigger/access SPO2 and access other vitals on my Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and am following the only documentation i can find, which is the Google Health Services for WearOS: https://developer.android.com/training/wearables/health-services
I noticed a lot of DataTypes weren't working, so i ran
Code:
val capabilities = measureClient.capabilities.await()
Log.d("Capabilities", capabilities.toString())
And got back
Code:
Capabilities: MeasureCapabilities(supportedDataTypesMeasure=[DataType(name=HeartRate, timeType=SAMPLE, format=1)])
Is BPM the only supported DataType and if so, how is everyone building apps for Galaxy Watch 4 with access to vitals? Is there any doco I can follow?
Thanks!
Galaxy Watch 4 and all Health features fall under Samsung Health SDK...

So I'm assuming this option isn't available? Also, it didn't look like there was the ability to invoke a read from a sensor (such as SPO2), but rather access previous SPO2 reads from a repository. Finally, i was hoping to not have to wait for the data to sync with the phone prior to being able to access it. i.e. I wanted to push data into the cloud from the cellular version of the watch itself.
Is any of this possible at all?

If you have experience in reverse engineering apks, reverse engineer Samsung Health, Android manifest will have permissions to access sensors and the dive further more to see how the SpO2 logic is written but you might get some headache since it won't be easy since many things are obscured already...
(In this case, I suggest you go for older versions because they might be less obscured)
Good luck
Ps. If you need Samsung health sdk, I attached it for you...
I feared reverse engineering was going to be the answer! Will start looking into it. Thanks for your help!
