Hi, I've tried to search this on google and xda to no avail. What is the difference between the "normal" Pixel 4a and the G025J model? In particular, will I be able to unlock the bootloader (and flash lineage+microg+root)?
The J suggests it's the Japanese version, probably with different bands. Is that it?

Thanks! Unfortunately I would buy online and I cannot check if the bootloader is unlockable beforehand.
It is a US version indeed, but carrier unlocked. Does this mean I should be able to unlock the bootloader? Because from what I read it's only the Verizon version that is locked down, and the US Google Store version is not.

I'm aware of the tool that came out. Who wants to do all that?

If I where you, I think i would just get the international one to avoid carrier related lockdowns.
I'm sure that the developers here will attempt the same process with T-Mobile's 7 pro like was done with the T-Mobile's 6T and try to find a way to unlock the bootloader. Me personally, I was so content with T-Mobile's version that I stayed away from the section for a few months.
When ordering on the canadian site, will that version be bootloader unlockable?
I unlocked my 6T after talking with reps. They agreed to unlock my SIM after I made two installments, for a total of around $83, only a couple weeks after getting my phone. It was well worth it, and went towards the phone, anyway!

I've been thinking of making this list for people who will be buying a Pixel 4 XL in future. It might come in handy to decide where to buy your phone from.

To be more clear I think you need to refer to it as Bootloader Unlock as OEM has no relation to that at all.

Hmm, not too sure. It's not that the phones come with an unlocked bootloader, you still have to unlock it. But they are either OEM unlockable or not... Any other suggestions to make it clearer?

Been searching everywhere to find out if Vodafone UK is un-lockable. Has anyone bought one recently to confirm they're still OK?
The Tmo variant can be unlocked after the sim lock is removed. I think it goes without saying for most that Fi and Google offer unlcockable versions but as this is for new guys it might be worth noting.

U.S. Cellular is unlocked for Pixel 4, would assume xl as well
Except for the Verizon model, all of the other US variants can be bootloader (OEM) unlocked when they are SIM card unlocked. However the SIM card being unlocked is a requirement to having the bootloader unlocked. If you purchase a device through a US service provider, it will generally have the SIM card locked down and you must request a SIM card unlock from your service provider. The "unlocked" version sold by Google (and Best Buy) comes with the SIM card unlocked already. Therefore it can immediately have it's bootloader unlocked.
Verizon variants will never be able to be bootloader unlocked - even if you are able to get Verizon to unlock the SIM card. (People who are successful in bootloader unlocking a Verizon model are the exception to the rule and simply got lucky - normally due to a MEID snafu).
This is the same across the entire Google Pixel line.

I think Verizon is locked if you buy it from them. I bought mine through the Google store with Verizon as a "3rd party" and I got an unlockable XL
I think basically whatever the carrier, they are locked until they are fully paid, is that right? In that case, I might just close the thread as it's not very useful.
Does anyone know if the Spectrum Variant of the Google Pixel 4 xl Has an unlockable bootloader?
I called t mobile today told them I'm a developer and they gave me a permanent unlock for my phone for the OEM so I can't complain but call them, whoever's your provider and tell them you're a developer and you're trying to access the Android 11 operating system and because it's a Google phone they bound to unlock your phone. And my phone ain't fully paid off from T-Mobile so I'm good I'm happy with the results and right now I'm using Android 11 and this bad boy for preview is beautiful
Hello everyone
Any news on Pixel 4XL EE UK to unlock the bootloader after 6 months of use???
I'm on a Verizon variant which I purchased directly from Verizon. Initially I was unable to unlock my bootloader same as everyone else. However, I was recently in developmer options and noticed OEM unlocking was no longer greyed out (I was running Android 11 with Octobers update). I Didn't believe my eyes for a second and immediately toggled it on and got to work. Within a few minutes I was unlocked and rooted. Not sure if they messed up on the 11 update or if it was a mistake from one of the updates. I hadn't checked for a while previous to my discovery so I can't pin down the exact trigger.
Once you either fully payoff the device or get permission through your carrier then the carrier sends it over to Google's server which generates your unlock code then is sent to pixel 4xl as a update which will then unlock your sim. Once your sim unlocked it will allow you to highlight unlock bootloader. This is for tmobile, att, and sprint. Verizon variants however is an exception. You can get sim unlock, but will not highlight the unlock bootloader. Once in a while somebody gets lucky, but does not happen alot. Even tho it is a Google phone the carrier can still make the choice for the bootloader.
Hello, can pixel 3a IMEI be checked anywhere if it's factory unlocked or not?
Check the pixel 3a forum, this is the pixel 3 forum.
Checking IMEI will be the same for both models. Do you know an answer?
Do you mean sim lock or bootloader lock. None of the Pixels are sim locked as far as I know.
I mean sim lock and as far as I know there are simlocked versions too like sprint for example.
For Pixel 3 starting 99 IMEI is Google, anything else is from another vendor. 35 is Verizon I believe, which would mean no bootloader unlocking either.

That is a question for the 3a board, we do not have those models on the Pixel 3.
Anyone know if the bootloader will be unlockable on the pixel 4a?
I've been on a pixel 2 and didn't have any issues initially unlocking it. However, on every single RMA device I got (I went through multiple), I was unable to unlock any of them. And thus ended up staying with my semi-broken pixel 2.
From what I could recall, the typical pattern is the Verizon versions can't be unlocked, but other versions were fine. Is this still usually the case?
I haven't bought a new phone in a while and was wondering what the development scene is like for the Pixel phones. I really want to get rid of all Google features except the camera. AOSP or Lineage. Is that possible if the bootloader is unlocked?

The Google software is what makes the pictures great, not the camera. That said the pics are hard to beat.
If you buy the Unlocked or Fi model they are bootloader unlockable and always will be. If you buy a Verizon model they are locked with only a random chance they could someday possibly be bootloader unlocked.
All the models should be sim unlocked.

We likely won't know 100% until actual release but if gsmarena is to be believed, yes it'll work fine. These are the bands it supports according to gsmarena.
2G bands GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G bands HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1700(AWS) / 1900 / 2100

Yes you can use a rom that allows signature spoofing or you can modify whatever rom you'd like to allow sig spoofing and use Fdroid instead of Google play store as your app store. MANY people do that nowadays! See NanoDroid thread here on XDA for more information: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/module-nanomod-5-0-20170405-microg-t3584928
@penguinyaro Verizon has a long history of encrypting boatloaders on their devices they sell.. I think they were the one's to really kick off the whole encrypt the boatloader deal then many others followed suite and now you must really ask a lot of questions when you buy a device because if not regardless of what device it is or who makes it you could end up with an encrypted boatloader. I was going to purchase a Pixel 2 xl years ago and nobody on eBay could tell me whether or not they were sim unlocked Verizon pixel 2/2XL or Google purchased devices. Also I read soooooooo many reports from people saying they sent their pixel 2/2XL in to Google to get fixed and Google ended up giving them a replacement and the boatloader was encrypted on the replacement. Reading all that I just didn't even follow through with getting a Pixel 2 XL at that time. There are many reports on Google's site and all over about that. But as far as I know the 4a does not have an encrypted boatloader unless you get one from Verizon then I'm quite sure it would be locked down. That's why I like buying devices off swappa.com so much because most everyone there knows about what they have and can confirm before you purchase.
The road is getting narrower every year for us! Pretty much everything bought from a store like Verizon, At&t...Most phones in stores have encrypted bootloader nowadays unless you run across a Motorola or buy an unlocked international model. For me its either OnePlus or Pixel from Google.
Edited
I can't imagine why it wouldn't. If you buy one straight from Google there'll be no doubt

I went through a number of rma phones as well. This was more than enough to make me doubt Google.
Does unlocking the bootloader void the warranty? this will be my first Pixel phone.
I remember during the Nexus days I could ul the bl without fear of voiding the warranty, except for the Galaxy Nexus from VZW where they would piss and moan about you unlocking the bootloader, but of course I did it anyway and still was able to get a replacement when I was screwing around and hard bricked it... Oops
Now it seems that even the manufacturers who allow bl unlock, Motorola among others, will void the warranty if you unlock their phones.
I recently sent my Pixel 4xl in for RMA. They replaced the logic board and sent it back. It was a Verizon edition. Before putting my Verizon sim back in I unlocked the bootloader. Always a chance something nice can happen.
Just received my P4a (Google Version) and unlocked the BL without issue. Used the standard ADB unlock methods. The OEM Unlocking was grayed out, until connected to the mother-ship via WiFi.
Now we just need the system images to get the boot.img for rooting.
Is there a way to extract the boot.img from the phone? or do we have to wait to get it from google?
From what I under stand you cant,,,so we will prob have to wait for the Sept factory images maybe.

Same. No issue with unlocking the bootloader. Now I'm on hold until I can get rooted and bring apps and data over with Titanium Backup.
↑ Same here. Giving Google the benefit of the doubt that since today (Aug 20) was the "official" release date, we should see them online tomorrow AM as their server updates. Otherwise, something is wrong, as they should be posting the original image all the phones already shipped with, not just the next update.
