Question Xperia 5 III vs. Xperia 5 IV - Sony Xperia 5 III

I won't be considering a change. I got the 5 III a month ago when I had read enough about the 5 IV to make up my mind. The only reason I have the Sony Xperia is my pleasure in taking photos. Going from 16/24/70/105 focal length equivalent to 16/24/60 doesn't make sense. I understand there is some significant improvement in videos but I don't do videography. Just photography. So, as it stands now, the 5 III is a better phone for me.

i just miss the wireless charging at my X 5 iii badly

Some do. I've never used it. I never take video, either, but I have friends that only do video.

To be honest only 2 things I like about the IV over the III is the matte color and no Google assistant button. Neither of which warrants an upgrade. So here's to hoping the 5V has the zoom from the 1IV and a processor that doesn't overheat so easily.

For me, going from cameras with 16/24/70/105 to 16/24/60 is a serious step in the wrong direction. I don't do video or play games on my phone so I have no heat problem. As for the assistant button, I've never used it and I never push it by mistake. What I might like is for that button to be fully programmable.

I'm kind of the same boat, in having no interest in the 5IV due to the different lens set. I upgraded from the 5II to the 5III, primarily to gain the extra reach. I have no real complaints about the 5III. I use the Assistant button occasionally, and the way my case fits, I don't have issues with accidentally hitting it.
I'm also primarily a photographer, using video to capture what my kids are doing when I don't have my video camera with me. So video upgrades aren't a big deal.

I also planned to update to 5IV around a year after buying 5III but I won't be doing so because they downgraded the camera. The most important feature is why I purchased 5III in the first place. I might be upgrading to 1IV/1V in the future but the prices are too high for me.

Sony's emphasis seems to be on videography and Vlogging. I know they don't sell many compared to other brands but Sony Xperia sure gets plenty of play on YouTube. Perhaps that's because the others are so similar.

Do you think it's possible to install the ROM of Xperia 5 IV on Xperia 5 III?

nope.....but u can try it....i pray for u

If till end of 2025 the issue with VoLTE won't be fixed, than i will be able to do it, because this one won't work anyway

Just bought this phone. Is the camera still the best?

Just bought my 1st Windows phone to test out. Is this still a good phone? I would love your thoughts.
Just bought this phone as well to see what all the noise is about the camera.
I tested it against my nexus 5 and the zoom was incredible shot out of 20th floor window, but I have not taken it anywhere yet to take real photos.
I would like to hears other thoughts as well.
I think we are the only 2 people that own this phone and visit xda
yeah I think so as well.
Probably since MS locked it down so hard and it can not be rooted, maybe people lost interest.
This is my test phone and that time when we all wish we had a good camera device to take a quick picture(now waiting on that moment.)
Nexus 5 is still my daily driver, but I like this phone a lot.
To answer you original question, from everyone I have talked to this is still one of the best, if not the best camera/phone combination out there.
It's still the best camera phone (maybe except Nokia 808 with bigger sensor, but no stabilization). Lumix CM1 should be much better, but will cost twice more and it still isn't in sale.
Is there any camera app to allow me to set exposure time more than 4s like default application?

Do your guys camera kinda rattle when you put the phone down?
Or if you tap the phone earlier against your hand?

I looked that up when I first got the phone. Can't remember where I found the information, but it is just the OIS element.
I'm not a camera guy so I looked up OIS element. It appears that regular cameras have the rattle as well.
OIS = Optical Image Stabilization
New one to me.
Most said that if the rattle stops then you are in trouble.
Long story short Rattle is good.
Guys visit the site for detailed information Windows Phones and anything related to Lumia/ Win Phone

I've bought and tried almost every smartphone with a good camera.
Nokia Lumia 1020 takes the best photos of all till now...

As a previous owner of lumia 1020. My thoughts and info.
Currently I am a note 3 user. Lumia 1020 was for me a very good phone. My only issue is that earpiece volume was low (Small ear problem due to my work, but I can say iphone and now note 3 are double lowder) . At first it was perfect. After the 8 update it went lower. Restored to the initial version but no improvement. Kept and updated to 8.1........ still the same. Contacted microsoft but no answer given (dah). If the volume was higher I would never have sold it. I was an iphone user, android, lumia, iphone and now again on android. These are my conclusion on personal experience.
1. Camera is far far superior than other phones. YES. By far. I dont know about the iphone 6.
2. Rattle noise of the camera is a little bit disturbing but as I have read its on the stabilisation of the camera.
3. Windows os is FASTER than any other (Yes I have previously rooted my HTC m7 and used custom roms)
4. Support from microsoft sucks (sorry but they have not answered any of my emails with a solution)
5. To take great photos you have to study and learn the camera 's features.
Do I miss my Lumia? YES
Will I ever buy a Lumia? YES ( thinking of the 930 but I saw many issues with that as well.) In a year or two if they take their jobs seriously they can make unbelievable smartphones.
Hope I have helped someone.
stunning camera. Way above anything else.
I've been using the phone since June 2014. It has a STUNNING camera and I've been a serious DLSR photographer since 2004.
Its not all things to all men but low light and detail from the large 41.3-megapixel BSI CMOS image sensor are v good. Its a FX - full frame camera in a phone without the add-on lenses. FX on a DLSR is £1000 entry level.
I perhaps wish I had more control over the photographic process. I'd love a variable Neutral Density Filter. I'd love a simple HDR app.
I'd like better 3rd party apps. I think this camera\Nokia 1020 will ultimately fail in the market as it is locked down by MS and Nokia. Such a shame....and self defeating. Camera 10/10.
I tried to debrand it when I got it. Failed.
No WP equivalent Cyanogen Mod or simple 8.1 for me then.

Especially since no other can do 4x FHD zoom without serious quality drop
Mine glass broke while moving and I bought galaxy s4+ while waiting repairs and I decided to keep it, since the operating system gives so much leeway...
Only problem is that now I have to use burst to get even one good image even in good light

Hi there guys. Im not new in the forums but new to this threads. I used to have Motorolas and still love them, awesome devices and still think the best out there, at least in Android side, but my GF took mine for a game and gave me this Lumia 1020. which to be honest i sold her the idea of getting it in the first place.
So far ive been investigating as many people talks too much BS about 41 megapixels not being important bla bla...
My findings so far:
The phone specs are medium to high compared to pocket cameras. The quality is actually amazing, a few small details as with anything but i think its just perfect to avoid buying a camera. I just dont like that the zoom is not that much, to be honest its great when im at an stadium and i take this pictures that are simply amazing compared to what any other smartphone can take, but if i want to zoom then im the one with the crappiest zoom. But i bought this Lensung zoom 12X and im going to check it once it arrives in a couple of weeks or more.
There are some cool apps out there for this camera so the biggest problem is to know which one fits you better, thats why i have about 8 apps installed. Ive been playing with some and they all fit somehow. Im an amateur photo lover beginner in the lowest level but damn this camera makes me look at least as a good enough camera man he he he.
Issues so far: i hate the phone overheats but i know it is normal.
No real quality lenses out there (im going to test the one i mentioned but not sure its gonna be good enough yet)
Possible advantages:
Ive seen people working on creating cases that fit real lenses, professional ones, waiting for the results and possibilities to buy them.
And one last thing, in the party a couple weeks ago every single person started taking pictures... i was the one taking pictures at the end of the party as there was no match for this camera-phone, simply they all surrendered to its quality pictures, iPhone lovers, Android lovers, Samsung lovers, all of them. So yes, this phone is still the best camera phone you will find!

How sure are we that we are making the right choice?

Hello XDA developers!
I'm posting this because perhaps it can help someone else.
In August 2014 I bought a beautiful shiny Sony Xperia Z, free from factory which means I paid full price and it was great!
(but everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked, it was a joke ).
But, after a little over a day and a half, the screen broke alone in the front pocket of my pants (I confess something tight but had put my cracked Huawei with no problems), it really is not a problem: I had a Huawei with screen without pieces working perfectly fine! The problem is that about 100% of the touch stopped working, making the phone an expensive paperweight.
I could not even take a picture! Everything for what I was use it was for timing a pendulum in my physics class. The most expensive clock that anyone could buy!
Of course, the warranty was conspicuously absent!
Since then I have had to exist with this phone and Genymotion because in college have a smart phone is a necessity (at least where I study).
But now I have the opportunity to purchase a high-end phone and the first thing that came to my mind as a camera flash was Sony (I quote in Spanish: "El ser humano es el único animal, tan animal, que tropieza dos veces con la misma piedra.") Because I'm a Linux / Android developer and Sony launches AOSP kernels and release the source code even before launching the device itself (as with the Z2) leaves to me a good taste in the mouth, especially after being a proud owner of an Xperia Tipo (best smartphone in my life!). The "slow development" is no problem for me, because I am developer for 5 years (although recently I deleted my Gmail account and opened another for personal reasons, thats explains why I'm junior again).
Leaving that aside, is the Xperia Z3 a good choice?
I'm thinking in spend a lot of money (around 2 minimum wage in my country) in a good device but it does not convince me at all, maybe due my trauma with Xperia Z.
As a proud owner of an Xperia Tipo, Sony is amazing, as a defrauded and (fooled?, cheated?) holder of an Xperia Z, Sony sucks.
I post this because maybe someone will feel helped and like me maybe some one indecisive can feel safer to opt in or to run quickly away from Sony.
If the risk is greater than the gain, as the Xperia Z, what are our options? Personally, I look for a device that does not baulk with things like Custom Kernels (as KNOX or locked Bootloaders). Samsung: I'm supposed to own my phone!, right?
Thanks for reading, I hope this is helpful and if it is not, at least I hope it will help someone (even me).
I think of a OnePlus One, I do not care to be brought from China XD. (I've tried to win an invite bu no one love the "inncoent" humor)
Edit: If you think on this, the M8 is a good alternative! In comparison, the "desventage" of the M8 is the waterproof. I can't find any other.
Edit: This was my last phone (this phone is my current phone):
Cracked but fully working Huawey Y320 Arround $60
1. My dog ran and pulled the USB making the phone kiss the ground.
2. Then, I accidentally droped on the College.
3. I was angry cuz it reboot and smashed against the table.
4. Was woking perfectly good till the LCD cracked because I sat on phone.
Z3 is simply amazing but I'd suggest you wait for another 3-4 weeks. The first batch of Z3s are full of manufacturing defects. I had mine for 2 weeks and the black bezel around the screen is damaged. I went to the service center and they asked me to wait another month so that a new batch of phones will be available. Also the camera quality is average. Sony screwed up again in the Superior Auto mode. Manual shots come OK unless there is no bright light around. Speakers are also a bit dull, although I don't use them much. A friend of mine has OnePlus One and it's seriously a flagship killer. But compared to the Z3, OnePlus one looks dull in your hands. Z3 kinda nailed it in design department. So wait, and even if you buy it, just check it in the store itself for any defects. Also don't forget those service tests. Hope it helps.

Knowing that you are a developer, I would definitely say that you should go for xperia Z3 - for personal (rather Z3 community's) interests. Go for z3 dual D6633, and you know why

Yeah! maybe buy it right now is not smart enough and, no, sadly there is no such thing like Sony Centre here. Are one, but they can't do anything (they won't replace the phone never!), I mean, I bring them my Xperia Z and they just acused me of abuse. I really can't realize how the best support brand (in my opinion) can made defective devices!
You don't know how many I've suffer because the Z, I give you a breef detail: As I buy the phone in the half of month, I've eating only eggs by 15+ days because I had no enoguh money to buy descent food! So, my trauma is justificated and I'm scared. Ahhh Sony, There are nothing bad for you, but for us the things are turning black. And the sacrifice does not had any value: I never opend the cammera app, I never setted a password, I never changed the wallpaper, I never enjoyed anything the next day I needed Blackboard in the phone but, of curse, I had no phone.

You didn't give much away in terms of what you want to do with it. It's a great phone, but if you want a cheaper, larger phone perhaps you could consider the Nexus 6. Also, there's the Z2, S5 and other phones which have been out for a while and are cheaper.
That's not to say I regret getting the Z3; it's the best phone I've ever had, and 4g is amusingly fast, but it's expensive (I got a discount through my employer otherwise I'd probably not have bothered).

Yeah! I'ts not about money, cuz the money it's a vanal stuff. I'm afraid about if my inversion, my money will have any value. As I owned a Xperia Z by 1.5+ days, my inversion had no value. If my Z3 crack again, you know, god bye money!
So, the S5 looks fine, the screen cracks but still working!
Thank you for your answer.
As much as I like the Z3, and getting mine replaced due to severe light bleed on right side of frame and slight indent of frame towards LCD near power button. Others have a pink spot issue in camera (Mine has it but very hard to notice), Phonearena even has an article on it. Now reports of fractured back glass are coming in like the Z1.
Better wait for a new batch like someone mentioned.
If you need one right now immediately, the M8 is better as in US HTC offers free one time screen replacement in first 6 months.

So is it guaranteed that they will make new batches in 3-4 weeks? Wouldn't they still sell the old batch as they phase in the new? I want one but how long would it take for a new batch? I just want to know how long to wait. Any help is appreciated.
To be honest its hard to say.
I would say avoid it. There's no ROM's for it, and probably won't be until well after the Z4 is released if at all, and they won't be of the level of M8 ROMS. The screen, camera, speakers and design aren't as good as other alternatives, and if you managed to break a Z in your pocket which is a miracle, then this will probably do the same.
I'd get an S5 or an M8, the M8 is probably better for custome ROMS, is better made, has a better screem, speakers and in my book a better camera too, but is not waterproof.

Maybe you are right. It's time to look in other way. The M8 sounds like a great idea. It's sad the stuff about the glass. If the glass were better and the screen worked this phone could be perfect. However, I'm gonna see how the things are changing in the time.

Don't worry that's what put me off too. I made my dad get it because he is more accident prone and it is one of the best if not the best in drop tests.

Thinking of moving from my S6 to the Z5 - current users, do you think it's worth it?

I'm mostly interested in good battery life, little to no lag, a good camer and a decent/good screen (not that interested in 4K).
All in all, it sounds like the Z5 is a very good choice.
What do you guys think?
Xperia Z5 hasn't been too good of an experience for me. It gets pretty warm even during light web browsing, battery life isn't up to par for me, and the display and the camera is definitely worse (in most areas) than the Galaxy S6. I'd say keep your Galaxy S6.
All the inverse for me...
Xz5 is a killer.
Better manufacture quality
More true color display and photo
Plus PSN synchro

The thing that gets to me with the S6 is the battery, and also the app lag after a while... :/ That's why I am thinking of moving on really.
Not got either but are you interested in waiting for the 820 phones in a few months?
I've had a lot of phones and this z5 is right up there as an oem phone (not rooted) Its the best I've had little things like battery percentage, clear all apps button, battery management tools all Inc I've mixed feelings because battery life isn't as good as my nexus was, but last day or so I've tinkered with stamina mode with the battery and that's made a big difference to me about 3 hrs 30 min screen on time yesterday and 30% left going to bed that's Bluetooth and wifi on all day it's not bad.. If you have a playstation the remote play is pretty awesome too, i've noticed playing some games it's gets a bit hot but not for long, if your a flashaholic with custom roms though you'll be a tad frustrated at the mo

Or that you are right.
Thing is, I am still within my Amazon return period and with less than 100 pounds more I could get the Z5 over the S6.
Question is, is it worth it?
The other thing to keep in mind is when you come to forums like this you usually only see posts about people with problems so it never paints a good picture the same can be said of any device, is it worth £100 more than your s6 not sure but defo worth considering

I'm doing just this. I have an AT&T S6, and I'm less then impressed with the battery life and the RAM management. I ordered the Z5 from expansys-usa.com hoping it works better for my needs (had a nexus 6 but it was a bit to big and my brother wanted it for Christmas.
I always liked the software on my Z Ultra, was way to big though.
I'm just waiting on it to get in now (few weeks di to the song to my location).

Well I guess thats the beauty of Amazon, you could (Although tedious)
Return S6.
Buy Z5 and see If you like it If not return and rebuy S6?
I dunno lol.
Im tossing up between the Z5 and S6.
I don't think i can wait till next year, as I have a first gen Moto G
I can get the S6 for cheaper, Im not sure the Z5 is worth more with its hot 810.
Decisions will be made by the end of the month otherwise its going to be a tough few months surviving with lackluster Moto G
I've gone from the S6 to the Z5 and couldn't be happier.
Couldn't wait to get rid of the S6 and touchwiz, Christ I don't know what Samsung are thinking with that buggy battery sucking mess.
I (somehow) just downgraded from S6 to Z5, cause really cannot stand the S6 poor batt life.
I'm happy with Z5 camera speed, batt life but i really miss Samsung SideSync
Jumped from sammie i9205
used s6 and z5 or a week.
Winner - Z5
why? i like the design and battery.
You will read alot about problems with z5 but...
well i was samsung fan for many years.
Always was like" bleah wthell" when i was looking at xperia menu buttons.
- it turns out its not a waste of space -
its rly well designed and the buttons desaphere when they should and pop up back when they are needed. 3rd week - used it for games, browsing, google drive and office things, movies.
Its easier to hold z5 in 2 hands w/o pressing anything accidently. The space between screen and edge of phone is perfect for thumbs and the cam button - dmn i love it.
I always rooted / used roms for sammie phones. in Z5 - i unlocked it but than... well i stopped.
Yee yee u loose low light cam quality a little bit. i rly dont notice it. yea it piss me off that i lost some things from system ( even if i dont use them ).
Fingerprint scan is in a dmn good place. Took few days before i got used to new buttons locations.
Screen wont leave u with " hey mr pixel i see u there!" bad taste.
other things like specs and tests etc - are all over the place so i skip thatXD

I'm also at the same boat as you, I currently using s6 edge for abt 3 monts now and I just received my Z5 dual 2 days ago. Just fyi I also have LG G4 which I use for ard 5 months. So my opinion will be based ard those 3 devices.
Well, I like the way Z5 handles, it feels balanced and easy to use one-handed, which strangely enough even my smaller s6edge is harder to use as my palm sometimes accidentally tap on the edge screen, and also the capacitive keys, where I believe both problems will not exist on regular s6.
I have a photography hobby, I use full-frame Nikon DSLR, but as they say, the best camera is the one in your pocket, which is my smartphone 99% of the time and the only thing holding me back is the camera quality on z5, when u compare side-by-size, then u zoomed in on the photos u will really notice how bad the image processing on the Z5, too many artifacts and the edges of the object is like its over sharpened, the result is quite similar to G4 but worse. S6 is much much better camera overall, clean pictures with minimal noise and great sharpness.
The worse part is it tends to affect people photos quite badly, which I use my smartphone to take pictures of most of the time, taking those precious moments of my 3yo, even when standing still the details is loss on z5, on the other hand G4 gets most details with most noise but S6 gets almost as much details as G4 without all the noise.
One more thing worth mentioning is that the time when u hit the shutter button until it actually captures the photos is quite slow, even in bright sunlight, I'm not sure whats happening there but I might try a factory reset to see if that helps. S6 is almost instant, while G4 is as fast as s6 in good light but when its not that bright it the worst of the three, it could take a full 2 seconds just to capture the photos.
I read from xda and some other sites that sony is planning on releasing new camera software with new UI, that is my last hope tbh, if that fixes the issue I'm having then I will definetely keep my Z5 as my primary phone. It doesnt have to get s6-quality but at least not this bad.
I'm using Rev.3 unit (stated on the box), some ppl get Rev.4 already which I also dont know what has improved. I'm also using the latest software which is 5.1.1 build no 32.0.A.6.152 model no E6683 (dual sim)
Tbh I will choose Z5 over s6 any day, I like everything about the Z5 over my s6edge / LG G4, well almost everything, the only single thing that holding me back is the picture quality, as I love photography and this is a huge compromise for me if I would choose the Z5.
Hope that helps your decision.
Keep experiences coming! Threads useful for somebody deciding between the S6 and Z5 also.
If only the 810 didnt ruin this years phones.
And if only the S6 had good battery.
Hows one handed use with the Z5? From dummy models the S6 would seem more comfortable, due to Z5's height.
What's the difference in rev on these phones mines only 5days old and days rev 2 I feel cheated lol
Sent from my Sony Z5 ooossshhhh
got rev 2. Was similar to u - felt cheated. but... after i checked forums it turns out that rev 2 had less problems copmpared to 3-4 but imo - dont even look at rev.
Probably its as important for u as case color for antutu score.
i did the move from S6 to Z5 and overall im disappointed so far
the device heat to much
camera is slow and software on z5 is slower and less polished then s6
battery life is disappointing compared to Z3 and its almost on par with s6
i hope sony will fix all of the problems in the upcoming android 6 upgrade
Never owned a Samsung phone but have owned several Sony phones. Very happy with the Z5.
I am on the same boat. I am just thinking of to jump to the Z5 from s6.
But I had a z3+ and that was very underperforming, hot, laggy Snap 810.
And I am afraid of this hot 810 again. I know, the z5 have pipes to drive away the heat. But dunno.....
S6 camera is awesome, and I have never met a person who could say the z5 is better regarding the whole camera. And this is a shame .
Also I have to notice, the Z3's 6.0 concept sw is very good. BUT that would be nice if we could test it on z5. It could help us to make our best choice.
S6's fast charging is awesome too, and I love S6's health app. Booting speed is fastest in android era.
I am not sure about Sony. Will they keep their phone business, and if NO, will they stop SW upgrades ?
S6's big disappointment is the LAGGY interface, wrong multitasking becouse of bad ram management, battery life is terrible. But I have to notice, z3+ had ALL this wrong things too, and that was 810 SNAPPY too.

xz premium worth getting in 2018?

is the xz premium still worth getting now that we are in 2018? or is it worth waiting till sony releases there next flagship? what are you thoughts peeps
well, still only phone around the market with 4K HDR display. cool thing but only useful if you use 4K streaming services or keep that kind of content on your phone. and you still get good stereo setup if loud speaker matters to you and regular updates. it all depend on your personal preferences though. if you wait a bit more till sony release new flagship with "premium" in its name your xzp might get even more cheap and you getting a decent phone at good price.
I got rid of my XZP and got the Mi Mix 2 which to me is better.
XZPs body is huge for the screen u get, 4k is overkill on a screen so small, can't take full advantage of it. DRM key issue is a let down with Sony as usual.
Can get better for a lot cheaper in my opinion.
I just bought the device after my Z3 recently gave up on me.
All I can say personally is that I'm really glad that I finally got a new device and the XZP was a good choice I think.
To me the big bezels on the screen are not a problem but a good thing as I rather have some space on the front of the device to rest my fingers on.
The camera is pretty awesome but that's quite subjective as I didn't compare it to anything else than my Z3.
Softwarewise I'm still a fan of Sony's close-to-stock feel of Oreo.
I watched a lot of reviews and read a lot of articles beforehand and most of the negative things in those haven't been a problem to me at all.
So if you plan on buying a new device you could wait until the new line-up from the top manufacturers is ready and then get a good deal.
1. Signal reception. Samsung, HTC and Xiaomi nervously smoke their cigarettes. Sony da best.
2. Screen. Yes it's not ALWAYS 4K. Yes it's not as bright as _some_ OLED displays, but it's still one of the most true-colored displays on the market. One of the best.
3. Camera. Of course HTC U11, Pixel are unmatched. But also, knowing that, for example, Samsung S7/S8 aren't perfect and their owners still use Snapcamera or other 3rd party software for better shooting experience, I'd not say that Sony's got a BAD camera. Yes, SuperAutoMode is a total crap, but everyone knows that Manual mode is actually an automatic mode which, somehow, allows for better photos. So, I will say, everyone admits that XZ P has a DECENT camera for photos. And it's got the best Video. People say Sony shoots video as better than Pixel just as Pixel is better in taking photos over the Sony.
4. Performance. It's SMOOTHER than Samsungs. Just put them together. Multitasking and etc - watch videos on Youtube: more or less same as other phones with same specs, and even a tad better than iPhone X.
5. Style. Yet Sony is the company out of a small club with its own recognizable style. And cool colors. Also, Xperias feel more expensive at hand, because Sony doesn't stink in materials.
6. Physical shutter button. It's awesome.
Everything else should be a clear IMHO, but those are also features that differ Xperias from other phones.
-I DO love the Sony Apps (album, walkman). Sony also has the PlayStation suite, which I don't use. But you might
-I often DO use the Noise Cancelling wired earplugs via the 3.5mm jack. And SONY probably is the only company that offers this feature out-of-the-box (I use MDR-NC031, previously been using them with Z5 Premium and XZ)
-I hate the DRM thing which complicates the bootloader unlocking and adds unnecessary consequences
-I DON'T regard bezels as any sort of inconvenience
-Stereo speakers are a great feature, but I rarely listen to music without earplugs/headphones
To sum up... There's NO other actual powerful flagship on the market chat combines a powerful CPU, really decent camera, stereo speakers, IPS display, 3.5mm audio, SD-card and 2sim altogether. And those are really not as Hi-Tech as the wired NC or the 4K display featured here. Even some midrange smartphones offer those features, except for the CPU, camera and sound quality.
The closest match by hardware feature set would be the LG G6, which doesn't really challenge XZ Premium... Maybe XZ, but not XZ1, neither XZs.
You want to wait? You'll get old and die before you choose then, cuz Sony releases a new flagship every half year. If you're not happy with XZ Premium for the price it's available today, neither you will be satisfied with the new Sony flagship for the price it's gonna cost. I also thought... If you're waiting for the perfect device, your dreams actually won't ever come true: while you're waiting, we're all using imperfect devices... and stay excited. We know they're not perfect. Nothing is...
I've just ordered mine last week and i'm totally satisfied ($550, Hong Kong).
Just wait and get the xz premium 2
- it has big ugly display while most moving to borderless design
- it do not has embedded wireless charging
- it is not fully dual sim as second sim can't be used with SD card inserted
- it still can't wake by double taps
- it do not has HDMI output (MHL)
- it has security and ergonomic faults coming initially
And I do not think that XZP2 will fix anything above. Sony showed at CES 2018 the same **** they made last year ;(
I love it and I'm gonna miss it when I buy my next phone that still has analog radio. Sony really betrayed me by not announcing the deal with the radio antenna being grounded. One minute we had perfectly good radios, next thing you know, you can't listen to live radio anymore without draining your mobile data and being asked to buy more.
If I were you, I would wait until MWC 2018 before making a decision. The new Xperia phone could outdo the XZ Premium
The XZ Premium has the best IPS display on the market hands down. It rivals the best amoled panels when it's in super vivid mode. And that's without 4K.
Is it worth it in 2018? Definitely.
I just bought one last night and I am very happy having it. The only gripe that I have right now is the timelapse video function. I could not find it or maybe, it is really not there.

There's an app you need to download, it'll appear in the camera apps. Search for "Time Lapse" in Play Store. Install the one with the blue dial and white arrows, i think the developer is Sukro or something like that. Anyway.
Also, time lapse available in snap camera hdr.
Many features were removed, and can still be substituted with some 3rd party software.
I am thinking also about buying it but sound quality and decibels from headphone jack are important to me and I heard/red that it is no good.
Can this be fixed with some sound mod?
Also, I am thinking about Moto Z (1.gen).

The DAC is really loud on XZP. Sony actually advertises that.

I am talking about lab tests they do for every phone that comes out.

Sound output is 3 decibels lower than on my 4 years old iphone 5s (???)
And they boast about sound superiority on this phone...

Right. So use something like VLC for a virtual amplifier. That'll be a little louder

Listening music via VLC app?
I would rather keep my iphone if I have to do such compromises.
If I buy Xperia I want to listen music through their default app, not some 3rd party app.

Should i switch from s8 to XZP?

Hey everyone i just want to know is xzp better option then s8?
Is Xzp good interms of rom development and future software support?
Hello . no doubt you should buy the premium xz. all videos on YouTube shows that the xz premium is faster than the s8.

roms? dont know about that mate, but speed its faster, also nicer screen, although the design of the s8 is better, but the XZP feels snappier, better screen, and overall just out performs the s8 in almost every corner
but in terms of rom developing this isnt the best phone I can tell you that, I dont know if things will change after android Pie is out, but nothing is sure, I hope though
but I would definatly say the S9 is better, has a better camera, screen that is also great, better design, feels better and more stylish

As far as official software support, Pie is the last Android XZP will get.
If you're switching from S8 in hope of getting longer software support, then XZ2/XZ2P might be a better choice for you.
As far as XZP vs S8 goes, it's difficult to say which phone is better, depends what you're looking for.
S8 has a better camera and more software toys and gadgets. However, that's the primary reason why I steer clear from Samsung and LG-the software. I've dealt with months old S8s and S9s that had lag and freezing issues, bad battery life and random shutdowns. It's behaviour I haven't seen in a single Xperia for the last five years. They just simply work, and they're built like tanks for the most part.
The second reason why I keep rocking Sony is the battery life. The first phone that got me through two days without a charge with normal usage was the Z3, and that's where I got hooked and stayed with Sony.
Xperias are just as flawed as any other brand, it's just a matter of what you're looking for.
If I needed the best camera phone on the market, I'd go for Pixel, for example.
Bottom line, if you're considering Xperia and the budget allows it, rather go for XZ2 lineup. I'm looking at the XZ2, bit I just can't stomach the design of it. Had it in my hand, it just feels odd to me, unlike XZ2P even though it's bigger. Probably a matter of being used to really slim Xperias.
As far as custom rom support goes, I'd guess the Samsung scene is richer, but then again, since I started using Sony, I stopped rooting and flashing custom roms, I just don't see the need for it. The OEM software is very clean and debloated, you can further disable stuff you don't need and you get quick monthly updates, I have yet to see a compelling reason to root it and flash a custom rom, considering my needs.
Good luck
Cheers
Went from always having Samsungs to risking it and buying an XZ Premium. I'd say don't get the XZP, to be honest. The camera is good on paper, but it's actually pretty bad compared to my Note 7. Low light is terrible. A lot of these devices (including mine) have intermittent WiFi connection issues and piss poor screen share stability with a lot of lag.
I dropped my Note 7 loads of times and it was fine. Dropped this once and the screen is all scraped. I'm going back to Samsung soon.
Future software support isn't looking good either.
Have a look at how cheap these phones are on eBay already. People are finding them hard to sell

I dont know about camera man, I tried it with my friend he has a s8 and i have xzp, unless he uses manual settings, mine on auto is better, on manual his can get pretty good only slightly better even in low light, but not enough to concider switching... in terms of dropping phone I dont know about you man, my phone dropped multiple times and I was amazed how I barely see scratches (fell like 5 heavy drops with no case on) there are drop marks on the frame of the phone but thats all. I agree wifi connection HAD issues but it was due to software bugs but now its all good.
future software support, we are confirmed to get the Android Pie, concidering the phone comes android 7 out of the box, that is 2 major updates already and we might even get the third as in after android Pie, the updates start to roll form Google them selves rather than each phone's manufacture. (I am not sure if all phones, or only the ones that come android 8 out of the box tho)
the only thing or two someone would put the S8 better than the XZP is the design and sometimes camera (not in all cases tho).
In terms of speed, no lags in the long run, battery life, screen (in terms of realistic and not colorful, as some people think the s8 is better but its only more saturated but the XZP is more realistic and has 4k HDR), the XZP is the clear winner, heck my brother has he s9+ and I still have better battery life even on 4K mode!

I have a friend with the s8 and he really want to have the same device like me because the xz premium is a beast , more smooth , faster than s8 better screen , camera , battery etc

Some fair points there, but my WiFi and lagging screen mirroring problems are still there - same with a hell of a lot of other people. If you ever have this issue, you'll soon find people flooding forums demanding that Sony give them refunds or fix the problem, since the updates didn't fix the issue at all.
I can see why you would defend the phone though. I loved it at first, but now on reflection after using it for around 8 months, I'd personally go for something else next time. Constant WiFi signal drops are getting pretty annoying.
Sony's Xperia division doesn't exactly have a good reputation for reliability, and I'm beginning to see why. And this is coming from someone you could probably call a Sony "fanboy". I think I'll stick to their PlayStations and headphones!
In terms of specs they are similar, but xz premium software is much closer to stock android.
I'm on a xz premium .and the lineage15 .1. It's very good combination . Fast smooth . 4k is here with a little procedure. s8 is slow compared to xz premium. here the applications opens instantly. the video proves that the original xz is faster than the s8. slightly. so better. after only your choice is important.
