Weird charging issue - Google Pixel 3a Questions & Answers

Yesterday my Pixel 3a stopped accepting charge.
I use 2 chargers - the original google charger and a Xiaomi USB-A with a quality cable.
When I connect the Pixel charger + cable, Pixel 3a shows the wave charge motion, the status icon changes to "flash in battery" for a sec. Then it stops charging. The charger works fine with my Pixel 6.
Same situation with my Samsung PD charger.
The Xiaomi USB-A charger works but extremely slowly. The Ampere App used to show ~1,2A but now only between 50-100mA.
The charger works fine with Pixel 6.
I cleaned the seemingly clean Pixel 3 socket, nothing changed.
Any ideas, please?
Thanks
V

We already have an old phone. Perhaps your battery is worn out?

The battery is perfectly fine.
I've gone to the bottom of this. Literally.
After carefully cleaning the contacts of the Pixel 3a socket with contact cleaner, the phone still didn't started to charge properly.
However, I noticed that after wiggling the plug a bit, PD charging came back on.
So I cleaned even more intensely by rubbing contacts carefully with a toothpick which I had to shape with a knife in order to reach down into the socket.
There was still some tiny amount of black gunk down there I could not spot even with a watchmakers loupe.
Now we're back in biz.

I have a similar issue - bought a Pixel 3a recently from eBay, charging works but there is no connection to the computer via USB.
I tried it in Windows 10 and Ubuntu, used even a usb drive which I plugged into the adapter, I think something is wrong with my usb-c port.
Can you please be more detailed on how you cleaned the port? did you rub hard with the plastic toothpick?

No. I put it on paper tissue wrapped around carved toothpick.

I carefully rubbed the contacts with a wooden toothpic on which I put a drop of mild non corrosive contact cleaner. Initially I tried rubbing with tissue wrapped, later bare wood. The latter worked.

Have same charging issue, and proper clean help. Original pixel cable should make little click sound and dont't fall out even when you hang phone holding by cable

Usb c has 24 pins. The pin 6 and 7 should be at the top side, then charging is working again. That means, try to plug in the usb c in the other direction

[Q] Charging problem

a few days back my phone started to charge slower and gradually it stopped charging at times. It only charged if i moved/bent it or keep it supported on some object.
It worked fine with Nokia Lumia800 cable so i bought a new cable today but have the same problems. What can be the problem here ?
Try sharpening a toothpick so it will fit in your phone's usb slot, then gently move it around in there and scrape out anything that could be in there. Over time dust and lint will accumulate in there which could cause a poor connection, which could in turn cause charging problems. Just be very careful so that you don't break anything. The nokia cable might be slightly different and that's why it would work and the other's wouldn't.
If you have an air compressor I would use that or some type of high out put air and blow inside the input for the charger

It's also possible that something has cracked. In that case, from now on be very careful when inserting/removing the cable. You may need to apply gentle pressure on the cabke in 1 direction during charging.

I've broke my connector charge jack...any idea how I can charge my phone?!(lg Optimus One)

[A700] Who else is also experiencing faulty chargers?

My charger keeps breaking, to be specific the cable.
The cable is very, very poorly designed. It contains 1 wire which is covered by braided shielding. The wire is the positive and the braided shielding negative. At the point where the braided shielding comes together for connecting to the micro adapter the shielding keeps breaking. This means no charging. I have tried soldering couple times but the shielding and wires are so thin it´s just usable a couple of times, until it breaks again.
I tried to make a DIY cable, but i didn´t get it to work. Probably need to place a resistant over some pins, however on the acer micro usb i couldn´t found one on the board where the micro usb is soldered on. Acer didn´t follow the usb standard with this adapter, the wire inside the cable is white, normally this is data instead of positive.
So i´m waiting for the 2nd time for a new 50 euro charger.
Just curious if more people also experienced this problems.
Yeah, I'm on my third charger now. You can charge them through USB although the charging light doesn't show and it takes about two full days to charge from low to 100%.
I have heard, though that a USB 3.0 supplies enough power to charge the a700. Haven't tried it yet, though. It may be cheaper just buying yourself a USB 3.0 PCI card for your PC and charging to that way.

I had similar issues where I thought my charger was broken, but it was a thermal problem. It seems, that if the charger keeps plugged into the socket for example over night, it can get so hot that it triggers some thermal protection and switches of. To reset the termal protection, It's not enough to let it cool down (which it does on it's own after shutting down anyway), but I had to unplug it for a couple of minutes, then replug it again - charger working!
I never had an issue with the cable though...

Pixel stopped charging. HELP

My pixel 2 XL stopped charging at all of the sudden and only accepts slow charging and with a "Chinese" cable. The original cable doesn't work. No the cable ain't broken or the charger. My girlfriend has a pixel 3 and she uses my charger and cable and works on hers. We used also her charger and cable ( from pixel 3s ) and on her pixel 3 everything works comes to mine it doesn't even recognize to start charging.
Yes I'm using the original one.. I wrote it all but I don't know why XDA deleted some stuff.
Anyway yeah always used the original one and always been using. Never used another cable or charger actually.
It just happened put of nowhere, morning was fine when I went to bed couldn't charge it.
The only way I'm able to charge my phone now is with those lame cables of 1£ and it charges super slow. 5h for 80%. But that's literally the only way.
I've done factory reset, hard and soft resets, battery calibration, cleaned the port with toothpicks... Nothing seems to work.
It's a weird problem because the original cables don't work just the non original ones , which charge super super slow, but I'm also sure the cable and the chargers don't have any problem because I live with my girlfriend and she always uses them ( the one who came with my phone and the one who came with hers , she has a pixel 3 ) and no problems with her. Just with me.
Maybe my battery is faulty ?
Try some rubbing alcohol and a toothbrush. Mine kept connecting and disconnecting repeatedly while charging. Here, I had a nice peice of lint in the port. Just an idea. Hope you get it figured out ?
I had something like this happen a while ago and the problem for me also turned out to be lint in the charging port. It actually looked totally clean, but when I stuck something in there to clean it out I was surprised that there was lint.
Don't stick anything metal in the charging port though, because it could short out the connections. I just cut out a thin piece of plastic from a plastic cup and used it to scrap around. A piece with a nice point on it is good. Try to pick out any lint that's at the bottom of the charging port that may be preventing the cable from inserting all the way.
Good luck. Hope that helps.

Mysterious Issue with Charging via USB-C Cables on Moto G7 Plus

TL;DR: My phone, a Moto G7 Plus, only charges one way round on my USB-C-to-USB-C charger while the phone is on. When it is off it charges on both sides. It works on both sides of a USB-A-to-USB-C cable always. What is happening?!
My phone, a Moto G7 Plus, behaves very strangely. It will work in specific circumstances in inconsistent ways with a USB-C-to-USB-C (C-C) cable, but it will always work with a USB-A-to-USB-C (A-C) cable.
Imagine my C-C cable has two sides, A and B, which should both work (as it used to) since it is a reversible cable. When my phone is on, charging works on side A, but not side B. When I turn off my phone, it works on side A and B. If I turn on my phone with side B plugged in, it also works. But if I then unplug the charger and plug it back in on side B, it doesn't work. Sometimes charging with a C-C cable doesn't work at all unless I restart my phone.
My A-C cables all work on both sides.
If my phone works with A-C cables but not C-C cables, I guessed it was either a hardware problem. But if it's a hardware problem, the problem should be the same when the phone is off. Is it therefore a software problem? Is there a problem with the negotiation of power to the phone? Is one of the pins dirty? What on earth is happening?
I decided to clean my phone's port in case there was dust or dirt in the way interrupting the contacts. But this has not helped.
Ultimately I have done the following to diagnose the problem—and I am none the wiser.
Steps to resolve:
Removed lint from the port with a toothpick (obviously turning off the phone first)
Cleaned the port with rubbing alcohol and cotton wool (with the phone off).
Blasted the hole with compressed air.
Blasted the cable hole with compressed air.
Tried other A-C and C-C cables.
Bought a new 3.1 C-C cable.
Plugged the phone into a computer's USB-C port rather than a wall-charger.
Cleaned the contacts with a pin wrapped in alcohol-drenched cotton wool.
Does anyone have any insight into this very odd behaviour? I am stumped for troubleshooting.
UPDATE 28/10/2020, 12:55 p.m.:
Using an A-C cable, transferring data to computer only works on one side, but not another. Presumably a specific pin in the phone is faulty or dirty that is only used in a specific orientation.

Question Magnetic USB-C chargers do not work! Triggers moisture sensor block.

I've been using magnetic cables for my Android phones for years. You put the magnetic USB adapter in the charging port of the phone and the USB cable connects magnetically to it. Makes it very easy to charge your phone while driving, keeps dust and dirt out of the charging port and decreasing the wear and tear on the port from constantly unplugging and plugging in a cable. However, when the USB adapter that stays inserted into the phones USB port is in there for a certain period of time, it seems like maybe around 5 to 8 hours, it triggers samsungs moisture/foreign object sensor and disables the charging port entirely and the only way to charge is by using a wireless charger. There are several ways to temporarily circumvent this but ultimately the sensor always gets triggered and the song and dance starts over and over again.
So that being said, has anyone figured out how to stopped this from happening without rooting? I love my magnetic charging cables and have invested a lot of money in them and I use them not just for my phone but for several other devices likes tablets and stuff because they can universally fit usb-c, micro, nano and thunderbolt with just one cable.

Did you try with another magnetic adaptor?
I have also been charging with a magnetic charger for many years, now even for the device I've been waiting for almost a month, I ordered brand new kits. I really hope there is no problem like what you described.
Of course I will also buy a wireless charger, but the convenience of using the magnetic one is indispensable for me.
Yeah I'm having the same issue with my magnetic charging cable. I haven't had the phone long enough to see how big of a problem its going to be, When i get the pop up i take the plug tip out for a while and it seems to go away.
Worse comes to worse if it starts to become a major hassle I'll just get a wireless charger hopefully someone will figure out a solid fix before it comes to that
Never knew something like this even existed... Can one leave the tip in the usb port permanently as a cover to protect it from dust/ debris when not using to charge it? It also seems like a great solution for protecting the USB port from the constant wear and tear of plugging/ unplugging into it..
Exactly.
For years I have been using this solution to charge with a magnetic charger and the magnetic adaptor from the cable stays in the phone until I replace the device with another.

Yes.
So I tried something that might have fixed it more permanently. See if this works for anyone.
1. When you have the moisture sensor/foreign object notification and you get the message pop-up stating the charging port has been disabled while trying to charge with a cable plugged in, keep the cable plugged into the phone.
2. Then, restart the phone by pressing and holding power and volume down button and selecting restart.
3. When the phone reboots you will notice that the phone is now charging properly. AND if you unplug and plug the cable there is no moisture notification anymore.
I've tested this for about 24 hours and this has been the longest time it's been without triggering the moisture notification. Normally it takes under 8 hours to trigger.
So if this works then you can keep your magnetic adapter inside the phones charging port indefinitely without getting that moisture notification. I have not tried removing and reinstalling the magnetic adapter which might reset the moisture trigger.
Pulling the adaptor and reinstalling it also seems to at least temporarily reset the moisture notice
I'm glad to find out that I'm not the only one with this trouble. I'm not sure what I did, if anything, to fix/workaround the issue, but I've not seen the moisture sensor trigger for almost 3 days now. (Knock on wood.)
Things I've tried:
Reboot while the charger is connected.
Clear data in the USBSettings system app.
Switch to a magnetic plug that hasn't been used before. (I had several that came with the cables that have remained in the box until now.)
After trying each of these at least twice the problem still occurred again later. Today I realized that it's been a few days since it happened. To clear the warning sometimes it takes a blast of compressed air into the port, sometimes it only takes removing the plug, waiting a moment for the notification to clear and then putting it back in.
BTW, for the curious who haven't seen these before, search for "NetDot Gen12" at Amazon. They are very convenient. This is the 3rd or 4th phone I've used them on, and I also use them on tablets and other devices with a USB charging port. The only issue I've seen besides the moisture sensor on the S22U is that there is a small area on the screen next to the magnet where it is a little less sensitive to the s-pen. It's so small and usually such a non-issue that I didn't realize that it was due to the magnet until recently.
Of course, now that I've mentioned that it's been a few days since the moisture sensor was tripped, it has now happened again and my 3 day streak has ended. :-(
I wonder if the true quality of these cables is being revealed through other means (bugs in hardware through environmental discharge or whatever). Could be something simple like ESD on the pins, crosstalk/interference. Either way it's reading a short to ground and doing its job by protecting the phone.
USB was never designed around these magnetic devices and aren't in spec. It's not a phone problem. It's a cable problem.
There's a comment here: https://us.community.samsung.com/t5...lse-moisture-debris-alert-issues/td-p/2204054 that suggests it may be a software issue, as the commenter states that he's started getting it on the Note 10+.

Out of all the Android phones I've used with a magnetic cable (which have been probably 5 from various manufacturers over the years) I've never seen this problem before until now. The last Samsung phone I used was an S7 and I do remember having some odd over heating warnings when charging but eventually that problem went away. I think this "foreign object" sensor is being triggered because the magnetic adapter is staying plugged into the usb-c port in the phone but not charging. Thus the sensor is being triggered. However, there seems to be the same pop-up notification message for "moisture detected" and "foreign object detected" since it covers both in the same message. So it is a little tedious to figure out if the moisture sensor is being triggered or the foreign object sensor is being triggered.
Could the cable be at fault? I highly doubt it at least in my experience. It's more realistic that Samsung has placed so many safety sensors on this phone that it's only a matter of time before one gets triggered. But magnetic cables have been around for years and Samsung knows this. So they knew by installing this foreign object sensor that it might break the use of magnetic cables. Which is sad because Apple has had magnetic charging cables for years in their laptops and recently their Apple phones use magsafe wireless chargers which is a magnet built into the phone.
I've also used magnetic chargers for years in my Android phones and tablets and I've never seen it adversely affect it in any way.
I'm having the same issues and I'm not using some cheap knock-off magnetic cable but one that has been on the market almost 3 years, is still available, comes with a 10yr warranty and supports up to QC4.0 on the mobile cable version (which I have) and is also available in a 100w PD version (ChargeASAP Uno cable). These moisture/debris alerts are the FIRST problem I have EVER had with this magnetic cable, and while I originally bought 3 sets (thinking they would wear out from daily use, I never even opened my 2nd & 3rd set until I started having issues with it in my S22 Ultra on day 1 and assumed it was coincidence that moving it from my previous S10+ to this phone exposed a weakness from wear and/or age. Unfortunately the brand new set had the exact same issue.
Now, in my case, I always wirelessly charge, except when I'm in my car using android auto daily (why I bought the magnetic cable) and the once a month or so I copy data to/from a PC. I am getting the moisture/debris alerts every couple hours or more when the magnetic adapter is in and it is HOURS before or after I actually used the magnetic cable (tip was inserted 24/7 until I got tired of this nightmare). On the weekends when I may not drive or sync for 24-48hrs, I've gotten the warning when the phone was just sitting on a table at the lock screen for an extended period in my house. My charge port is spotless without a speck of dust and this continued to happen with a brand new magnetic charging tip that was sealed in an anti-static bag before putting it in the phone. Honestly this MUST be an erroneous BS error and Samsung should address it.

"Mobile Device" 18w version (I have these): https://chargeasap.com/collections/usb-c-mobile-device-magnetic-cable
They also sell 100w versions geared toward laptops and/or PD Charging
Interesting thread. I never knew about the magnetic system. I do keep a usb-c plug in the port full time to keep out dirt and lint. Never had the moisture popup so far in a week with one inserted in my S22.

There are other versions but these are the last ones I bought: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B085T5L9T6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
They don't last a long time if you are taking them out every night to charge with a cord. But now that I have wireless charging, they should be more permanent.
