I've disbaled google and the search function does nothing, how can I change this so my browser is used?
Similarly, opening youtube links isn’t working for newpipe.
Samsung A52s 5G with Android 12
you need to use the widget from the browser. if it doesnt have a widget, then you are out of luck. the default search box is from google app.

Thanks for the reply, is there a way to configure the search function when selecting text in a document or something or is that app dependant?

that functionality depends on each browser
for an alternative, you could install a third party launcher (e.g Nova Launcher). there you can customize the provided search bar functionality.

UPDATE: Version 1.1 is prettier and now launches straight to the Google Voice inbox without the delay from Version 1.0.
Here is a simple app I created that will allow Google Voice to be launched from the message icon on the MIUI lockscreen. I use it with this ROM here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=915527
Usage:
Install the attached APK.
Lock your phone.
Unlock your phone from the MIUI lockscreen by swiping with the message icon on the right.
In the "Complete action using" dialog, check "Use by default for this action" and select "Inbox"
You're done! Now whenever your unlock your phone with the message icon, it should launch straight to the Google Voice inbox.
You may need to uninstall any previous versions of the app, since they were signed with the debug keys. To do so, navigate through the following:
Settings -> Programs -> Manage Applications -> Downloaded -> com.ayuforever.googlevoicecatcher -> Uninstall
For anyone who's interested, the reason that Google Voice isn't available by default from the lockscreen message icon is that it doesn't have the intent filter for the "vnd.android-dir/mms-sms" mimetype. This app registers the needed intent filter and in turn launches the Google Voice app.
This is really cool.
How hard is it to change the lock screen icon designations?
Is it possible to change one of the icons to be a search icon, so that when you unlock with it, it launches a search keyboard?
p
lets try this again.

All I wrote was an app that catches an intent that Google Voice didn't already catch. Changing the icons on the lock screen? You'd have to ask the MIUI devs about that.

I don't understand what means. You are making the messaging icon point at another process or app?
ok installed and it doesn't do any thing? WTF?

What steps did you take that resulted in it "not doing anything?"

The messaging icon starts the activity for the default intent of the "vnd.android-dir/mms-sms" mimetype. While the stock messaging app and other apps like Handcent register this intent, the Google Voice app does not.
All this app does is register the necessary intent and then start Google Voice.
It doesn't do any sort of modding to the MIUI lockscreen at all.
how do I uninstall it? thanks in advance
I don't have to wait long for google voice to open I use swiftkey it opens quick for me thanks

Great app. Glad to see I am not the only one who uses GV exclusively.
Once Sprint integrates my regular number I'm on this like gangbusters.

Google Voice for calling
Have any of you gotten Google Voice making calls to work? So far the dialer doesn't seem to want to route my calls through Google Voice... :-/
Ran across this today. Wonderful stuff. Works perfectly after setup.
Edit: Working on Samsung Captivate
Thanks.
Working great so far with Rod's miui mod!
I've been wanting something like this for a long time.

Same thing has been happening to me.
How did you solve this? I need GV for international calling.
EDIT: I figured it out. Go into settings > Programs > Call Settings and enable 3rd party access under the phone security section
thanks.
This works so well...thanks! You are great! Now if only I could get 5 point lockscreen to recognize Google Music
This works perfectly - Samsung Fascinate on miui 1.9.x
Tried thanking you in your original post, but I only see the "Thanks" buttons on page 2+ of the this thread!
Yeah this is great. Thank you. Running on a Samsung Infuse 4G

Hello guys,
do you know how I can get rid of the Google Search bar in the standard launcher?

You can't. Google Search is sort of the launcher itself, notice that you can't disable it. The "Launcher" is just an addon for Google Search and required it to work.

Okay, I just wasn't sure I had understood that correctly when I read it earlier today. I'll see if i can live with it or I'll go back to Nova. Thanks!
I suggest just use a custom launcher, you can always access Google Now by swiping up from the Home button.
Is there any way to reach S Finder in an easier way than having to go to the notification panel? It's really annoying as I want to be able to search my phone quickly, and not by having to drag down the notification slider in order to open the search function. Or do you guys have any other recommendation for a file/contact/app finder or search app (other than Google, since it's generally sluggy for searching internally)?

of course there is mate,
1. Install nova launcher (there are other ways, but that is how I did it)
2. go to widgets and click 'Activities'
3. Select 'S Finder' from the list
You can also check out Conjure which is a similar app that works well and has a widget. But like Mitko76 said installing Nova and using the activities shortcut gives you a lot of options!
I cannot seem to find settings widget where i could add shortcuts to battery settings etc when i try to add a widget to do that. i have tried samsung's launcher and also nova launcher. is there any way to add shortcuts to settings?
thank you.
Looking for the same here. I also can't find it.

Using Nova:
Get into the home widgets selection, add a Nova widget of type Activity, then scroll the list until you find Settings, expand it and scroll up to the Battery item. Select it.
There you can also find all the possible shortcuts.
(I've translated the menu items from my Italian version)
Trying to add App Mgr using Nova Activities. Doesn't work. When I click or hold the setting it opens App Mgr but doesn't add it to home screen

If you use QuickShortcutMaker
it works fine
See screenshots.
Thanks. But got it to work finally. No need for another app.

any chance you could share how this is done?
To be honest , not sure. I just kept trying normal processes for adding widgets, then choosing nova activities, and under settings there are a ton of options for apps/app mgr, I kept trying different ones and one stuck.
Can not use for nova launcher.

I could be the dumb but which in the list of Settings shortcuts did you choose in QuickShortcutMaker to make the shortcut to the resolution changer?

Thanks for this.
The only thing that worked for me (Samsung S9+, Android 8.0.0) was the Nova launcher. QuickShortcutMaker went through the motions, but didn't actually put a shortcut on the home screen.
The Nova launcher works a treat, but why do Samsung oblige me to replace their launcher within the first half hour of owning their otherwise very nice phone?
I always switch on "Do not disturb" before going to sleep, as I use my phone as an alarm clock, so need to leave it switched on, but of course don't want alerts all night. As you can imagine, the last thing I want to be doing when I'm tired is effing around with settings, so having a shortcut to DND is essential.
The other shortcut I created was to the "Change Home" setting so I can easily switch back and forth between Nova and the "Samsung Experience" whenever I want. And you know something's going to be dodgy when they call it the "Something-or-other Experience"
Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!

it may be necroposting..but I'm having this exact same issue on android 10..I'd be infinitely happy with some sort of widget for this task...
theres a way to do it via the widgets screen when using nova launcher..I cant remember the exact steps for it.
Guys is it possible to change the pop up browser to let's say opera or something?
Default one is giving me issues. Won't open links from mail.

If you mean the browser window which pops up when in another app that's the webview by Google afaik. I don't think this can be changed.

If your using the Gmail app I don't think this can be changed but you can always press the three dots and it will let you open it in chrome. Alternatively, you can use the Sony mail app as this takes you to the web browser always.
If your trying to change this in more apps than the mail app then I'm unsure of this.
Apparently you can change the setting in chrome but I have yet to find that. Will have a look now
I dont use the gmail app and use aqua mail. This defaults to using your browser of choice, when opening links.
deactivate the system app 'setup wizard' after this pop ups will open in default browser
