Whatsapp: local backup is found, but it can't read messages. - General Questions and Answers

Hello,
I am having a strange issue with Whatsapp backups. I did backup, but after restore from either google or local backup, it says that it simply can't restore messages.
In both cases, it's getting found. To force it to restore from local backups, I removed google account from google drive.
I had saved something like 7 local backups a month ago and 7, which was made about a few days ago.
I had 2 numbers, but all backups where made with one number. If I change number to the old one, it's not finding local backups at all.
Sounds like I was not lucky with some Whatsapp version, since all 14 local backups didn't work, which made either corrupted backups or backups with some faulty coding, encryption key or something.
I wonder, if someone had this issue.
I did manage to restore half a year old messages, luckly, I had it saved with different google account. So, some whatsapp version did make a correct backup.
Please help, I don't really want to loose my messages.
Here is offers solution to find key file and decrypt using phython, but it looks more complicated than rooting.
If I root, some sites are saying that the key encryption file can be found in /data/data/com.whatsapp/files/key.
But I wonder, if I root, will I loose that key file at all? Should it be rooted already or it can be rooted after I have the issue?
Thank you.
PS. I wish if whatsapp would allow me to choose not to encrypt it and let me manage my security myself at my own risk, instead of getting stuck like this. Lets say, saving it in txt file and I would just put in into archave with password, like with RAR.

Rooting Android doesn't delete any existing files.

Thank you for something, at least...

have you found a solution?
I have the same problem.

How can I remove a phantom email account?

I updated my FUZE to the new ROM. Before doing that I used Sprite to backup everything except for System Data (and my memory card).
After the update I used Sprite to restore everything. Among that was the contents of my imap email account. However when I went into the Inbox, there was no email account so I could not open or access of the old messages that I can scroll through on the email page. I tried to create an email account but it told me there was already an account with that name (it seems like there is, but I can't access it).
I did a master reboot to clear everything out and before I restored from Sprite, I created the email account again. But when I did the restore, the same thing happened as before.
I know I can deselect email in the restore options but doing that means that it doesn't restore any SMS/MMS messages which I want.
Where is the email account data? Somewhere in the registry? If so, where? After I do a restore, would it be safe for me to find that account data and delete it so I can create it for real? I don't want to keep any of that old email.
Thanks.
Well here's what you should do. Restore your Sprite backup.
Download and install "PIMBackup" and do a full backup with it.
Go into the registry and delete the email account from HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Inbox
Reboot
Check your Message app to see if the email account is gone. Set it back up.
Restore your stuff from PIMBackup. Ditch Sprite
Sprite backups are great but restore lots of stuff. Sprite has the ability to restore bugs and bad registry keys. PIMBackup JUST backs up the information therefore it is the best and even works across multiple flashes without screwing anything up. I actually set up an XML file to load on first boot using UC (most custom roms use this) that sets up my Email account automatically, then a simple PIMBackup restores everything back.

Maybe a little excessive! but Player is right, Sprite is no good for restoring after flashing a new rom (use pimbackup).
Sprite is great for backing everything up, hard reset, restore - exactly the same so its great for trying new settings, software etc etc.
I didn't want to confuse anything here but I actually did use PIM (I've used it for regular backups and migration for over a year). I used it before using Sprite. But after doing a restore, my device became EXTREMELY slow, to the point where it took roughly 5-10 seconds to open up a single txt msg. So I did a master reset and then did a restore from Sprite (which is what brought me here).
If I restore from Sprite again (and it will give me that phantom email again), think I can just delete the reg key? Would it delete the contents of this invisible Inbox? Should it have any negative effects?
Thanks.
Can you delete the reg key - yep!
will this remove the contents of the ghost account - i dont think so, but the account wont exist, so you shouldnt be able to get to these messages
Any negative effects? - almost certainly! but not from removing the spurious reg key. Using sprite to backup, then changing the rom, then restoring sprite will almost always leave some annoying, odd or unusual behaviour. Simply because when you changed the rom, you changed (a few) what reg keys are required and what they are called (mail accounts generate a unique guid when you create them, which is where the ghost account has probably come from)
Restoring a pim backup avoids this, as it simply puts the database info back on - leaving windows to worry about reg keys etc - i'm not sure why it was so slow before, maybe trying again & a couple of soft reboots could help - or maybe the pim backup is screwy, try making a new one.
Good luck!
FWIW, when I updated the ROM I did as the HTC website instructions say and did not choose to backup any system data in Sprite (they say this avoids copying the registry).
So anyway, what will delete the contents of the ghost account?
Or maybe I'm thinking about this the wrong way - maybe instead of deleting the contents of that ghost account, would I be able to create a new account through the registry? Or rename a (real/functional) account in the registry? (when I have the ghost account and try to create an account with the same name normally, it tells me the account exists...even though it kinda doesn't)
I think the problem I am having with PIM seems to be too many message. I say this because the number of messages goes up for a long time and that's when it takes forever to load messages. I found that it settles down after a few hours but even then it still takes about 2-3 seconds to open a single txt msg.
Thanks.

[Q] WhatsApp backup? (Activation SMS each time I reflash)

Hi. I just arrived to HD2 world, and I can't find any info about some way to backup WhatsApp. I say WhatsApp not because of its data (conversations), but for the activation SMS, that means every time I reflash I have to reactivate paying for a SMS
In Android I had Titanium Backup so I just restored. I hope there is some way here in WP7, or a Registry key to save the code and restore or something.
Thank you very much, waiting for some light here.

I was thinking more of a specific thing, not all in a pack, but I don't really care. Thank you very much! I'll try. Hope it works.
LOL I just installed WhatsApp after reflashing, updating, reset and reactivation, and it didn't make the SMS step. Just from input cell number to chats.
Sorry. I guess I was way too farsighted!
Sorry to bump this thread, but where does whatsApp actually store the messages? It doesnt seem to use Isolated storage so there is no way there is just a data file that we can download..
anyone else have any idea's?
trying WMDC/ActiveSync launcher as I post this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23064872#post23064872
EDIT:
WMDC/ActiveSync launcher allows me to go to the app directory
Microsoft Windows Phone\\\Applications\Data\218A0EBB-1585-4C7E-A9EC-054CF4569A79\Data\IsolatedStore
where 218A0EBB-1585-4C7E-A9EC-054CF4569A79 is the application ID (might not be the same for everyone but I assue it is just to make this easy
There is a file in Isolated Storage called messages.sdf. In my case its about 640k in size but I guess that varies with the amount of messages stored on the phone.
I havent tried my device and copying the files back, but at least I can store them on my PC
Opening the file with Notepad shows messages and they are unprotected/not encryped. There is a lot of wierd caracters inbetween the messages, but it also shows whatsapp IDs from the recipients.
As soon as I reflash my rom (if new HD2 rom comes out soon) I will see if I can restore the messages.
So if you have acces to the Isolated storage dirs, you are able to copy the messages to your PC.
Note that WMDC/ActiveSync launcher requires a fully unlocked device.

Q: Lost all my contacts with faulty backup, need them back

Hey guys, so I decided I wanted to flash a new ROM, to try it out and stuff. When i completed the backup of my original ROM, i used ROM manager, and thought that it was ok, so I flashed the new ROM, wiping out all my data, including my contacts. Now these contacts, I had only saved them to my phone, not my SIM card, but was planning on doing so, but since I had gained the contacts 2 days before, I didn't think too much on it. Bad idea. The MD5 from my old backup with all my contacts was never created, so I no longer have the ability to back up to the file. So now i'm here, and I'm wondering, is it possible to access the Data file that was created when I made the backup, since only the MD5 is gone, and access the contacts saved on it? Thanks again!
It's default for your phone to backup your contacts to your Google account. Did you disable that? If not then you still have them all.
always backup your contacts when working on your phone I think it's the most precious part of my phone and always have a backup of it and as for getting it back like mentioned should be on your google account
Tried that already, no dice, i never disabled it, so no idea >_< I found the contacts app in my old backup that I made today that didn't have the MD5, but when i transferred it into a different backups system.tar, it stayed at the front of the folders, so i couldn't transfer them into the system folder itself.
Just copying the app itself won't do anything. Have you logged onto your gmail account (on a PC browser) and checked your contacts?
Yup, no dice, nothing there. As a note, i have no way of contacting these people other than this number, sooo ffffff-
That's bizarre. I've found the automatic syncing of contacts and what-not to be nothing less than magical! Sorry it doesn't help in this case - hopefully someone will be able to tell you how to extract the data from the ROM image that you have. Good luck.
Thanks, as a note, my old ROM was Juggernaut 5.0

[Q] how to back up / restore weixin / wechat

message history lost - happened once or twice before - on this round perhaps due to unauthorized access - don't know why anyone would want to hack to my wechat, but...
yes, i know that titanium backup can do this - only, i happen to have a backup of the app's files from the SD card that's much later than the latest titanium backup.
so i've overwritten the message directory on the SD card
\tencent\MicroMsg\b51e1101d48c856d9e55dceeb6ea2af5\*.*
with the latest backup, but the app doesn't recognize the stuff between the titanium backup / the later files. how to force it to? how does it manage these files anyway?
(the answer to this might also help in managing the app's thousands of files in order to keep the phone functioning.)
have a try?
not knowing why your wechat got hacked, maybe you`ve got spyed by ur enemies?
I accidentally downloaded Clean Master from gp,(sorry as a new member, i`m not allowed to post a link here)
and it works well on both protecting my privacy and do the cache cleaning.
have a try?
hacking is a separate issue

Hi, have you manage to solve the problem? Im now facing roughly the same problem. I checked the wechat directory, all my conversation and voice msgs are still there. But my new installed wechat just could not recognize it, and show a blank new wechat with no chat history whatever.
How to force it to recognize it? Thanks

turns out that the message history is NOT on the files that are on the sd card - the sd card files are thumbnails, pictures, whatnot for the visual content. the messages are in an (encrypted) sqlite database on the phone's internal flash storage.
i do not know of what logic, if any, the app uses to either open the existing database (if found) or creating a new one - i've seen it do both, despite my always wanting to use the same account / database.
if i recall right, i just bit the bullet and restored the app/data from my titanium backup, thus losing a few days of messages as that backup was not up to date.
or - on the recent versions you can backup to tencent servers / restore from there - i guess primary use for that is when moving to a new phone. they only keep the backup file 7 days, and don't let you access it locally.
as for how to access the message database in a readable format, please let me know if you figure it out - weixin (at least the old version that i'm using) destroys any device it's on by not performing any housekeeping and thus clogging all the pipes until nothing works. so would be great if the message database could be optimized/cleaned/delete oldest by an extrernal sqlite app.
(the image files you CAN delete from your sd card - which i do periodically to kill the old ones.)

Hey you said you are using titanium backup, does ot work well? let me know where do I find it
Is it possible to back up wechat messages
I want to permatenantly back up wechat messages, because all messages will lost after I re-install wechat
well, that's currently very hard to do, because tencent doesn't give you (unencrypted) access to the SQL database that contains your messages, even if you use the backup functionality in the later versions of the software.
you CAN permanently backup your messages by copying the database from your phone's flash-memory (probably needs a rooted phone). but you can't access your data due to the encryption.
someone needs to write a 3rd party app that cracks the encryption (which is easy for a geek on the know, as the encryption key is based on some device iD string on your phone). then you could actually see your messages and manage them. probably some chinaman already wrote this app, we just don't know of it.
but message history does NOT get lost on re-install (at least for me) if you install over the old install, not from scratch. or, if you've backed up your messages using the apps function for that, you can restore them from their server.
but over time weixin will destroy any device it's on as the database size and image files number grow too big for your portable gadget to handle. no real housecleaning functions are available.
I miss in wechat 1 feature. Restore of mobile chat log TO windows wechat version.
We can restore mobile chat history to new mobile but WE CAN'T restore mobile chat history to windows wechat program, or can we?
It would be cool to be able to browse my mobile wechat chat history on windows pc. As it is now, my archive is empty, lacking past conversations.
And mobile scrolling to past conversations with certain people is troublesome. It has no proper archive oh right so mb an archive in mobile too?!
Hi all
Would you please help me to unblock my wechat account?

if i understand correctly, you want to piggybag onto an account someone else created. likely not available, even if the other user wanted to sell his/her account, as they in most cases require real-person verification these days.
but you might try to buy an account in taobao, usually everything is available there.
Thanks for your response..
No my brother... I need "friend help login"
It's option of wechat settings.
Would you please see the link below

recover sms ... AND restore to phone again?

the whole day i am trying to recover my - by accident - deleted sms messages, with all programs i could find,
mobisaver, minitool, wondershare, coolmuster, ifonelab, dr.fone, fonepaw...
and wth the last 5 programs look the same, there seems to only be one giant company, that puts out every android recovery soft out there.
now, actually the recovery itself was successful, i got various html files, but sorted and shown in different manner.
it would take me ages to sort this by hand into one compatible backup & restore .xml file to restore the messages.
the only program of the above that saves .csv is fonepaw, but it completly messes up the dates.
so is there ANY software/apk which can recover the deleted sms AND restore them again into the android message up, without fcking everything up?
btw im am using an A3 2015 Duos A300F with rooted stock rom on android 4.4.4.
thanks!
No because Android uses dB files. Not xmls and that file can only be written to by a system app or with root. Otherwise it's doa.
Also all the so called data recovery apps are bs. They can't do anything.
like i said, the programs did recover the deleted messages, but they only save them in a convoluted html file to read in the browser.
wouldnt be a problem to sort it directly as a xml, so eg sms backup and restore could read it, but since every software is the same and only chooses to save in this ****ty html, its not an option..
fonepaw did as the only one save in csv form, but got the dates all wrong (despite they were right in the also saved html).
currently im editing by hand the least convoluted html that was saved by easus mobisaver for each sms thread seperatly to a simply csv format, so i can restore it with veryandroid back to the phone. (the only software i found, that uses a simple csv to backup & restore the sms)
