What are the best root apps for Android? - General Questions and Answers

I'm looking for new root apps, I already have 17 root apps on my phone. Does anyone know good apps for rooted devices?

I personally just use AdAway, Root Explorer, and Titanium Backup.

Thank you for the reply. Root Explorer is not letting me do anything.

And I'm using AdAway, AFWall+ (Donate), AM Pre-release, Aurora Droid, Aurora Store, BBS, ClockSync, Corona-Warn-Companion, EdXposed Manager, Elixir, Elixir Widget, Fox's Magisk Module Manager, Franco Kernel Manager, MatLog Libre, MiXplorer, MyAndroidTools Pro, SD Maid, substratum, Termux and Titanium Backup.

What are you trying to do? It can't access anything above /sdcard if it doesn't have SU authority.

Unless you're doing the hacking yourself, I'd be careful about hacking tools as they often introduce backdoors into apps. Use only open source tools that you have verified to be benign.

Have you verified Root Explorer has SU permissions? Open your root manager and check. It should have requested at some point and may have been automatically denied.

It has SU permissions, I checked in Magisk. It's still checked. I am doing the game hacking myself.

Hmm. Maybe remove the root permissions for Root Explorer, clear Root Explorer's cache, and try again?
You may find more help in the Magisk Support/Discussion Thread.

Again, if you're having trouble with root permissions in Magisk, I suggest posting in the support/discussion thread I linked above. Much smarter people than me are there to help you.

Debloat OOS 10.3.1

Hi all,
You must be aware that oneplus has added fake partition in new update. Because of this, none of scripts/ file managers with root are able to de-bloat 10.3.1. I know that there are some workarounds like overlay fix but there is no clear guide on how to use that.
It would really help if someone can give some guidelines
You can use either xXx no limits either debloater(terminal emulator) magisk module to debloat.
Both do exactly that job.
For the second you will need terminal emulator app(play store) and busybox magisk module installed in order to debloat
When open terminal app type
"su debloat" hit enter
Again type
"debloat h" and choose on of the 5 option to navigate and debloat what you want to.

xXx no limits gave bootloop so I am staying away from that. i tried debloater module but it did not remove anything. I tried in termux app. Busybox wasnt installed, is it why the module didnt work?

Busybox needs to be installed as I said otherwise you can't debloat using terminal.
As for xXx never had issue (now I'm on latest 9.9)and using many years even when had 5T device.

Yes I think i got in bootloop because I had overlay fix module installed . Or may be I edited profile incorrectly. Not sure.
I have installed busybox just now. will test and confirm.

I tried with busybox installed. debloater says uninstalled but does nothing.
Select each one app and will show you an option to uninstalled it through app menu
Otherwise no other solution but using xXx.
On 10.0.4 and open beta 8/9 didn't had any issue.

I used xxx module and debloted my oos 10.3.1. Its just that you can remove everything, i can share my xxx profile if anyone wants
I used xXx for the performance tweaks and debloating the apps I had disabled .oh and of course Viper.?

I have no issues deleting anything on 10.3.1 with root explorer. Deleting from system, product, vendor all work. If it doesn't reflash Magisk from within Magisk Manager and choose direct install and make sure you uncheck the preserve dm-verity check box first.
Or why not install the Titanium Backup app to freeze or remove anything?

Have neither used TWRP nor Magisk: both for me are absolutely senseless. I exclusively manage my Android devices by means of ADB / Fastboot. And if root is needed to perform things then I install a temporary root.

Check it using Play Integrity Checker, safetynet is outdated. You should get everything except the strong catogory(can’t get that with unlocked bootloader).
The app could also be specifically looking for root, so you can try TB Checker as well.

Well, not today, maybe on Saturday. It will work for sure if you disablw magisk using magisk delta, it kills root( the app may not be detecting root tho, it may be detecting some apps you forgot to hide or modules or etc.). Root functions by giving your device UID 0. Killing root shell destroys root. Just send me a logcat.

Do you have another version of the Magisk app hidden? If so, uninstall it.
Also, what exact steps did you take to root?
^^^^ You most likely have another Magisk on your phone, but it's hidden.
That's why apps that previously had root still work.
Go through the apps list and look for the app "Settings" without an icon.

"This scenario" meaning two managers? Actually yes, the prompt is given. I witnessed it myself (again) yesterday.
It seems like you are having trouble getting root access and modules to work on your Pixel 7 Pro. Try these things if they can work-
Update to the latest version of Magisk.
Uninstall and reinstall Magisk.
Check your device's firmware compatibility.Open the Magisk app and go to Settings. Check that the "Magisk Hide" option is enabled and that the "Magisk Core Only Mode" option is disabled.
If none of the above steps work, you may need to flash the stock firmware on your device.
Just try I am hopeful that it will resolve your issue.

What version of Magisk are you flashing?
Others on the thread....wasn't there a bug on certain Magisk canary versions where root checks were passing and root access was supposedly given to apps, but Magisk wasn't able to implement modules or confirm its own root status? It most likely has to do with that and/or in conjunction with being on a QPR as well....

Hmmm...interesting...
I forgot where I saw it -- it might've been in the main Magisk thread here on XDA, or in one of the Pixel 7 Pro rooting guides, might've even been a PixelFlasher thread -- but there was an issue (I believe it was canary 25206-25209 or something like that) that spoke about this similar issue; root detection would detect root and apps wouldn't put up a warning of lack of root access, but Magisk itself wouldn't confirm its own root status, the modules couldn't be activated, and the apps couldn't actually accomplish the tasks that required root -- it just wouldn't put up a warning/error stating it was lack of root access. I can't recall whatever came of it; I believe it was either downgrading to stable or updating to higher canary of 25210, but I can't recall off the top of my head. I do believe being on QPR was a factor, but I might be misremembering...
I suggest you try "finegling" the search function as best you can and see what users ended up doing...I'll see if I can't find it later...
Just to note, T3B3 runs fine with 26101 for me.

How to copy file to root directory

Hi. I have tried using root explorers to copy files to the root directory, but I am getting an error of permission denied eventhough my phone is rooted. Any advice, or suggestions?
Target partition must get mounted as RW in order to put files onto.

I had to install custom fonts and was able to do this using Cx File Explorer (although it looks like MiXplorer seems to be the best premiere Android File Explorer currently; I intend to use it when the need arises) -- I just had to make sure to enable "root mode" (which I imagine most file explorers have something similar as protocol and for safety). You probably have to do that -- as @jwoegerbauer alluded to already.
In any case, it is definitely possible. Also be sure that your root manager (Magisk most likely) is granting root capabilities to the app/file-explorer as well...

Sorry if I'm butting in -- as you directed your question to @jwoegerbauer -- but I'm thinking his post/statement was a expert/complicated way of explaining why it wasn't working.
Essentially, "mounting" is sort of equivalent to obtaining "root access mode"/"root mode" -- like I've described previously. Most of the time, there is a setting that can be set in any/all third-party root file explorer -- Root Explorer by Speed Software has a literal "Mount R/W" button, in
ES File Explorer there's an option to "Select 'Mount R/W'" in the "Root Explorer" setting in the “Tools” section, CX Explorer there's a "root access mode" to be ticked, in X-plore File Manager there's "Superuser + mount writable" in configuration, in Amaze File Manager there's "Root Explorer" in Behavior setting, etc.
Unless jwoegerbauer meant the totally complicated way of attempting to change the permissions/"mounting" through adb commands and/or other executions from a terminal type environment (the 2 that come to mind, i'm sure there are more)....
Hope this helps....

Thank you, no, you're not butting in. I appreciate your feedback. I have tried mount rw on es explorer, but I will try your method with the cx explorer in a few hours here. On the es explorer, even after mounting rw, it is showing that I don't have permission, that's why I was asking for the best way to do this, because that way didn't work for me. I didn't know if there was a better method.

That is unusual....
I've mentioned it before, but again you should confirm & double-check that your root manager (Magisk most likely) has it that those apps are given "superuser" access, not denied, and/or you should see some sort of toast notification when you launch the root explorer apps. Most of the time (at least with Magisk, it's been a long time since I used SuperSU and Kingroot), there is a prompt to "grant" access -- I have mine automatically set.
Your other apps that require root work right (although one can easily run root apps without root and only run into issues when doing specific particular usage)? If anything, have you checked any root checker apps -- make sure you're getting all you can out of your root access....?
Yea. I saw the pop up to grant root access to es explorer, but it wouldn't let me copy. Actually, I am trying to copy fotakill to my system/app folder because I wont want any ota updates. The last time I got an ota update, they took away my unlocked bootloader, and root. I have spent about 2 weeks trying to get everything back. I am having some connection issues with bluetooth on newer versions of android, so thats why I am trying to stay low

What's the best way to mount as rw?

Android 10+ prevents apps or pretty much anything from mounting system as R/W. Yes, even if you are rooted.
Top John Wu, the creator of Magisk has covered this in a series of tweets.
RIP to any mods or root apps that modify system.
To answer your question: You can try to achieve this by booting into Revovery mode and afterwards establish an ADB-connection and run the appropriate ADB shell commands.

Worthwhile to know:
Since Android Q, adb shell no longer requires manually mounting /system.
