De-T-Mobile LG Velvet 5G - LG Velvet Questions & Answers

Hi,
I have the TMobile LG Velvet and I was wondering if it was possible to flash like factory unlocked firmware to the device so I cam get rid of all the TMobile branding and apps?
Thanks!

Cross-flashing is kinda hard on LG phones unlike Samsung; however, T-Mobile LG Velvet anyways have the different CPU from others, (Mediatek VS Qualcomm) so it won't be possible.

Thanks. I didn't realize there were 3 different CPU versions of the phone. I've done this kind of thing with my G2 before to turn a sprint version into a factory unlocked version. Thank you!

I don't know the answer to this however if you turn on developer mode on this phone (I have the 900TM version) and you have gotten your provider to unlock the phone, then do this:
In Developer Options, turn on the switch labeled "Enable Operator Unlock". I don't have any details on what this does but it may be relevant to getting rid of those vendor specific apps.

can you flash MS631 to H631

Hello everyone I'm looking to pickup a stylo and I find the MS631 is a little cheaper then the H631 and it looks like most roms are compatible but just wanted to be sure that MS631 can be flash to H631 before I pulled the trigger. If it is possible do I just flash the latest H631 rom or is there more involved?
thanks
you want to put the tmo firmware/ROM on the Metro pcs phone? I'm not sure about the new ones but you could with the early batches. The physical phones were exactly the same hardware. I did it a bunch of times.
They are the same phones, only the installed ROMs/firmware is different with respect to the carrier branding only: the T-Mobile version obviously has some T-Mobile related content, the MetroPCS has MetroPCS content, but aside from that it's the same device running the same software, same bands available, etc. 2GB of RAM, 16GB storage, and so on.
Also, if this was possible it wouldn't change anything related to unlocking the carrier, for the record: that can only be done using the included application now, there's no more "unlock codes" with these newer devices which sucks and makes things more difficult on the end user but that's how it is now. So, even if you could flash the MetroPCS model with the T-Mobile ROM or vice versa, it would still be carrier locked to MetroPCS and wouldn't work with T-Mobile at all (or vice versa) even in spite of the fact that T-Mobile owns MetroPCS
Funny how that works.
Could always just use Katana which is an excellent fast stable ROM too.
I have MetroPCS and maybe it is just a placebo effect, but it seems I have more consistent network connections (voice and data) once I flashed the TMO firmware partitions. I have nothing to back this up unfortunately, but to answer your question, it most certainly works. It does NOT work the other way -- flashing MetroPCS firmware onto a TMO phone.
Slightly off topic, where were you seeing the MS631 cheaper than a H631? I had the complete opposite experience. Most of the H631's I saw were cheaper than the MS631's. I ended up getting a good deal on the MS631 because I have MetroPCS as my carrier
I know most are branded h631/ms631 and are in fact the exact same phone. I know that tmobile roms work on the metro phone. Katana was based off tmo version and is my daily rom of choice. I believe that CM is also based off of the tmo source.
Thanks for all the help guys ended uo getting a good deal on the h631 @tub517 I was looking at used phone on swappa and eBay so YMMV on prices being lower

Please explain how Android updates happen on unlocked phones. I don't understand.

Hello. I was hoping you guys could answer my questions.
Let's say I bought an originally made for AT&T LG GSM phone (such as the V20) that was then carrier unlocked, and I took it over to MetroPCS (or T-Mobile) and activated it there.
Now let's say Android security updates were produced, or an update from Marshmallow to Oreo was produced.
Would the phone get the update(s) or not get the update(s)? And who creates the updates and pushes you the updates at that point? AT&T, LG, or T-Mobile? Or does Google push the updates when the phone is on wifi?
Furthermore, does, for example, buying an unlocked T-mobile phone assure you that you'll get updates if they exist if you use that phone on MetroPCS? On the same token, would it behoove you to use an unlocked AT&T phone on Cricket, etc?
And lastly, I see carrier unlocked GSM LG V20 phones on ebay that were original locked to a Puerto Rico carrier. Let's say I tried to use that unlocked phone on T-Mobile in NYC. Would there be some sort of GPS block on that phone that would say "hey this phone's not in Puerto Rico!" and then prevent it from updating somehow?
This is all very confusing. Thank you.
So here's this supposedly great and active forum, and not one single person helps me. Thanks guys. Appreciate it lol. I'll show myself out.

LG Developer Boot Loader unlock for the TIM (Itallian version of this phone)

The T-Mobile version of the LG G7 can legally have it's bootloader unlocked.
http://developer.lge.com/resource/mobile/IssueDeviceInfo.dev
I just though I'd put this here. This should open the door for TWRP recovery.
If you use the legal way to unlock your bootloader, you will not be able to use Google Pay or other payment systems. While these systems are convenient, the less places my money can be accessed, the better.
I want to get the LG G7 PLUS when I finally save up money as it has 128 GB internal storage. If I can help development in anyway, I will.
wrong section buddy
Well I actually tried yesterday when I found out, and after putting all the info of the phone the website gave me an error saying that the actual model of the T-Mobile variant is LMG710TMP...."P"... I was frustrated cuz the phone model in the settings is LMG710TM not LMG710TMP, Jesus..
Anybody tried it and get it to work?
@bigjohnman
Your assumption/information is totally wrong. LMG710TM means LG G7 for italian carrier TIM. It has nothing to do with T-mobile.

Well both this website, and my T-mobile phone "in settings > device model" says that it is the LMG710TM, I can confirm it but there is a problem with their unlocking website because when I try to unlock it gives an error.
https://www.lg.com/us/cell-phones/lg-LMG710TM-g7-thinq-tmobile
There's no problem with LG unlocking site at all. Your phone isn't eligible for unlocking because it isn't an European LGM710TM mentioned on dev site. For the list of supported devices see screenshot.
Your phone is LGM710TM variant for T-mobile US = LGM710TMP.
T-mobile site states clearly (s. screenshot) that their G7 has a model number LGM710TMP.
As simply as that.

I understand that , my point is that LG website where I go this phone from and also my phone itself say to be the 710TM model not TMP . which is weird and annoying after you were told it was a different model
Hmmm, sorry to get some T-Mobile users hopes up... Telecom Italia Mobile users, You're welcome, or "Prego" as they say in Italy.
May as well delete this thread.

That's really pity for T-mobile customers. So far I know all recent T-mobile phones have a locked bootloader with no possibility to official unlock them. It's T-mobile requirement to manufactures.
Anyway the thread title is misleading and has to be changed.
Well, that sucks! Can't wait to get rid of LG's horrendous version of Android and flash LineageOS.

I brought an LG G7 here in Australia at a bargain a couple of months back. It shows T-mobile during bootup. But the model number is LM-G710TM while the software version is G710TM10p and build OPR.170623.032. I am now worried if LG-G710TM is the Italian model, not T-mobile, I got some Frankenstein phone. It does not have the manufacturer warranty anymore, but a 1 year seller warranty.

Hello and welcome to XDA
The European/Global model number is LMG710EM, I live in Italy and own a G7 with such model number bought new.
Isn't there a way to load EM firmware on the T-mobile version? Would love to get rid of that startup logo anyway

looking for "before-i-buy" details on the different versions, for using on T-mobile
cant seem to find exact details on in2013 / in2017 / in2020 / in2025 but i have (obviously) seen those references around while trying to research the different versions
i presume 2 of those 4 versions are international and the others USA, please do correct me if i'm wrong.... and based on the descriptions from people who are "selling" the Oneplus 8 phone(s) all of these appear to be T-mobile compatible
i've seen that there are both locked and unlocked versions of the USA models.... and i also have easy access to some unlocked international models locally from 3rd parties.... which leads me to some questions:
Question #1
is the T-mobile OTA blacklisting for bootloader unlocking limited to sprint/t-mobile models, or would an SIM-Unlocked USA model also end up blacklisted for bootloader unlocking?
Question #2
is unlocked International a bad idea for usage on USA T-mobile due to availability of bands?
appears 4g and 5g would be accessible, but i don't know to what extent the coverage would be hindered (which i've noticed can be anywhere from non existent to severe cell frequency mismatch between brands / regions / models)
Question #3
am i looking at any kind of "technical difficulties" outside of OTA block, by bootloader unlocking on OnePlus? i am very new to the brand, coming from Samsung in the era before they were locked by default :silly:

Hi,
First of all, there are 4 versions of the OP8 :
IN2010 (China) IN2013 (EU) IN2015 (US) IN2011 (India)
The OP8 Prois the same, but with IN202_ instead of IN201_
There are also brand specific version: Verizon and T-Mobile. Those version are a pain (as I heard) to update even by the official version. There are some workaround to SIM unlock those, but they'll still be a pain to update and root. If you succeed in rooting that you'll be blacklisted for OTAs on those versions.
The USA version is different, not a pain to root or to OTA update, you keep OTA when rooting. In short that's the phone OP intended you to use. It's 5G, but not millimeter waves or things like that. I couldn't test 5G yet since I don't live in America, you have to scroll through the OP8 forums to find your answer.
And there is no "international version". Don't be fooled, International version is a way to lure buyers in buying chinese version but flashed with OxygenOS global. You'll buy the chinese version (with potential band mismatch), it's cheaper but you'll have issues with G-Pay and 5G (even 4G in some countries).
So #1: Carriers phone not only blacklist you when unlocking bootloader, they try to make it impossible for you to unlock it. Idk if it's the same with unlocked SIM (but I don't think so)
#2: Since international is in fact chinese with global software (and not chinese specific) I highly recommend you not to buy it (even though the price looks sexy)
#3: Unlocking bootloader requires you to wipe your phone, otherwise no issues if you follow the instructions. If you flash a ROM or install magisk modules then the stability of your phone depends on the dev's work and not the OEM anymore.
I might be wrong with the Carrier Devices banning unlocking bootloader since I'm not from America so search more on the internet.
Hope this helped, have a good day :good:

there is definitely an IN2017, it shows on phonearena and gsmarena spec pages, but in the USA each carrier has a designated model number within a same phone model (like 900P 900T 900V) so that might be what's going on with IN2015 versus IN2017 (i'm guessing GSM model versus CDMA model)

You're right, I forgot to put it, IN2017 is the CDMA.
And CDMA are modified versions of the IN2015. That's why you can't use the same cases for CDMA and GSM versions. They added in the phone, the hardware to make their 5G technology work. So CDMA and GSM technically are all American (since they're located there), but they're different, especially for OTA. It's not OP that provides updates for CDMA phones, that's T-Mobile or other carriers, and I heard people here complaining the updates are slow to be available. I don't even know if Android 11 is available for them yet.
That's why I advices you to buy the IN2015

sounds wonderful to me i'm honing in on the decision to buy, just having a hard time finding non-retail prices, other than Swappa
would you recommend getting the T-mobile and converting (which effectively means unlocking? lol) or does that come with caveats avoidable by just buying one already unlocked?
it sounds like there's no difference but ughh... idk i'm in information overload mode trying to hit the ground running lol
If it was up to me, I would just buy the pro model if you can afford that. I ended up buying through tmobile to finance mine and had my device sim unlocked so I can unlock the bootloader.
I have IN2017 on Tmobile and would recommend it. The Tmobile vendor rom works better on their network for obvious reasons, for example 5G standalone doesn't currently work on the Global OOS (oxygen OS) roms.
To answer your specific concerns:
#1 I've never heard of Tmobile blacklisting anyone for unlocking or rooting. Just make sure the imei is good if you buy used. Use a legit site like Swappa.
#2 Yes avoid the "international". Stick to IN2015 (Global) or IN2017 for use in the USA.
#3 Bootloader unlock on the IN2017 requires a clean esn/imei. You fill out a form and Tmobile gives you the unlock code a week later.
After bootloader unlock you can easily root with Magisk or flash pretty much anything. On my 2017 I've ran the tmobile rom, OOS10, OOS11, and gone back and forth.

are you saying that OxygenOS is the global rom? also, can you clarify what is being described by 5G "standalone" ?
just got my IN2017 and it's on oxygenOS 10
it is unlocked and my account is Sprint (and will remain that way) but sprint's system was too slow to reflect that this phone was activated on the account, so the T-mobile store wasn't able to put a T-mobile SIM in it (yet)
...with that said, the phone says 5G is connected and speed tests are.... pretty bad... barely meeting mid tier 4G standards... how can i definitively confirm or deny if i'm on the global rom

Bro....
You will need to flash it. It doesn't come preinstalled on Sprint\tmo.
I'm using your exact setup. I too have the Sprint sim in my Tmo OP8
If you are on 10nand want to go to global, there is a thread on here that will take you through the process.
Follow the guide carefully but confidently. It does work and will not brick your phone.
You will convert to global a10... I had issues with cellular signal after converting.
HOWEVER, after upgrading to A11 global rom (local upgrade) everything works perfectly.
I'm on OOS11 Open Beta 3 with sprint sim on the IN2017.

based on what everyone's said so far about the global rom, i have zero interest in it.... i am merely trying to understand if i am on that rom now as a result of possible shady dealings from the seller on Swappa, based on how the post i re-quoted was worded. it threw me off.

Simple answer. Buy the phone from oneplus.com. I did and have had no issues at all on T-Mobile. Trust me, with any OnePlus devices, you absolutely want to be able to root right off the bat and install viper. Audio tends to be a big problem with oneplus phones, and only viper seems to solve the issue.
The phone is $600, and a bargain at that price.

Just look at the version on the about phone screen. The TMobile software builds end in IN55CB (latest is 10.5.22.IN55CB), and the global roms end in IN21AA.
About the 5g standalone, that means you can connect to the 5g signals alone. This only works on the Tmobile rom right now. You'll see NR-SA in apps like signalcheck or network signal guru. The alternative is NSA (non-standalone) 5g where the phone has to be connected to a 4g signal at the same time for 5g to work. This gives you 5g speed but with higher latency and it uses more battery. It's just like when Sprint 4g came out but early phones needed to stay connected to the 1x signal as well.

How easy is it to root LG phones?

I have a question that I don't want to just get Google's opinion on.
How easy is it to root most LG phones?
I have tried to root my brother's LG G7 ThinQ, but had no luck getting the bootloader unlocked. I like the idea of LG for myself, but since I was not able to root my own phone (Samsung Galaxy S8 Active) I really want the phone to be rootable. My last phone (Moto G5+) was rooted, and I loved root so much.
I've just been looking at the list of phones LG says are bootloader unlockable, and just seeing if I can find any on eBay.
Here is that list from LG: https://developer.lge.com/resource/mobile/RetrieveBootloader.dev
Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place I couldn't figure out how it works yet.
Your best bet is to get a LG phone not designed for USA markets, but usually cost more. There are a few exceptions such as ones that are not carriers branded. I am also looking into LG V50 (US Carrier unlocked) but no luck getting the bootloader unlocked.
