For the past two weeks, the Gmail android app has stopped automatically syncing mail from my primary Google account. Sync is turned on in both the Gmail app as well as in Settings. I've tried toggling them off and on as well. Other Google accounts sync mail without a problem so I don't think it's an issue of Gmail not running in the background but I've also set the app to "Unrestricted" battery usage.
I've tested this on 4 different Android devices and my personal account doesn't sync on any of them (including an older version of the app). I'm currently using the Outlook app until I can figure out the problem and it automatically syncs the account just fine. Co-incidence or not, I started noticing this around the time I installed Nameless ROM on my Oneplus 8T. I've tried totally removing the Google account from the devices and re-adding it multiple times. Any idea what could be causing my personal Google account not be playing nice with the Gmail android app?
Did you find a solution ? Im facing same problem. Just one account doesnt sync and its my primary... I tried different phones and on all of them it cannot sync my data on that account. Gmail not working untill I enter it

Unfortunately, no, I haven't found a solution. I'm just continuing to use another email for that account.
Did it start completely out of the blue for you or had you recently installed a custom ROM or anything?
Installed custom rom but on different phone. My main is stock
Also already uninstalled every device from myaccount.google.com and still doesnt work. I've tried also on fresh phone but it doesnt work too. I have other gmail accounts and they are syncing without any problems on every device.

Yeah, sounds like we have the exact same issue. I also asked on Reddit a couple weeks ago and didn't get any responses. I'll let you know if I find a solution though.
Just an update to say that my account has started syncing again today. I didn't make any changes recently on my end so I still don't know the cause but at least it's resolved.

I am on the stock ROM rooted. I have a gmail, google apps, facebook app - Not HTC Sense (contacts only) and weather(3 hours) accounts setup. Something seems to hang while syncing and the sync icon stays on for a long time. This will cause emails to be delayed in showing notification.
I cannot figure out what it is that is causing the issue. I am also assuming this is not good for battery life. When it is hung like that I can look at each account on the accounts & sync tab and none of them show active syncing. If I cancel the sync and then sync now they will all sync and complete as expected.
Any one else seeing this? Any ideas on figuring out what account is causing it?
Mine does this too. I'm rooted, running Perfect Storm v1.0. I also did the 'Kernal/OS tweaks'. I'm not sure what caused it, but it's been doing this on and off for a couple days. I also had that ooVoo video app installed and when I uninstalled it, the sync indicator went away. (I had previously set the ooVoo sync to off). I'll post if I find anything.
I selected each account and disabled sync for each one and it still showed the sync icon later on. Do we know what all triggers the sync icon?
Any one else having this issue?
I was having the same issue. No idea what was causing it, I thought it was Facebook, but I froze it and it still was popping up. I did install advanced radio tools in settings from Jcase and leankernal from Imoseyon...
Yeah I am unrooted still and have this same issue with gmail delay. I can send an email to my self and watch it pop up almost immediately on my old eris connected to wifi but actually have to launch gmail to get the email on the thunderbolt. WTF!? Thats basic stuff. I cannot for the life of me figure out how it works fine on the granddaddy eris but not on the grandson TB. I have one personal gmail account and one gapps account. The only difference in the phones (other than the obvious massive power difference) is 4g so I wonder if this 1st gen 4g device wasn't polished enough back at the HTC labs?

I have 1 of each account type as well. What about other of you having this issue?
I've been experiencing this all day. Won't sync my g-mail accounts. I froze HTC Sense, could that be the cause?
EDIT: Unfroze sense and it still won't sync my g-mail. Syncs my contacts fine, just not my calendar or my e-mails. I deleted data and it did nothing except remove all of the e-mails that I had on my phone. Still wouldn't sync so I booted up my backup, and it STILL is not syncing. Please tell me I'm not the only one experiencing this problem.
I have two problems since I did a manual upgrade to my I9020T from 2.3.6 to 4.0.4
Exchange Emails - I am using the stock email app. I found that every few hours, the exchange data gets refreshed and all mails gets deleted from handset. Then it will immediately start downloading all mails again from the beginning. This is causing huge data usage and battery drain. I have tried deleting all email accounts, delete call cache in recovery menu and re-creating exchange account again. Still problem persists. When ever the email app starts a refresh, first it will show "No Messages" and then it will again download all emails.
Calendar: Recurring meeting in calendars do not sync with my handset. Other meeting sync without any issues.
Has any body faced such a problem?
I've experienced the same problem with the email client the and the sync.
I had to delete the exchange account from the phone because it ate the battery in 3-4 hours.
You can try deleting data under Settings | Apps | all for calendar, calendar storage, email and exchange services.
Also, I've a lot of issues being resolved by doing a factory reset after updrading to ICS 4.0.4 (just make sure you backup your info).
Factory reset is the last thing I want to do. I have more than 50 games installed and other apps are also installed. I will need to download all of them again if I do a factory re-set. But if there is no solution, I will have to do it any ways. Would a factory re-set delete data from the additional storage on the phone?
Alternatively I have configured touchdown for emails and it works fine. But it does not sync calendar at all. Under accounts and settings, when I open touchdown I do not even see the calendar sync option. Not sure if this is a compatibility issue with ICS.
I finally did a factory reset of the phone and have configured exchange email. Everything seems to be fine. No refresh - delete of emails and recurring meeting sync is too working fine.
Nice!! Good thing is working now!
The problem has come back. I don't think I can do a factory reset every 2-3 weeks. This must be a bug in the stock email client. What is the best alternative email app that I can use? Let me know if you know anything.
I think there is no other solution to this issue unless Google fixes this and I see a remote chance. Untill I am ready to throw this and buy a new phone, I want to get an alternate solution.
I'm on the SGS2, and also on 4.0.4.
My issue is similar, but not quite like yours.
I have some recurring meetings that do sync. I'm just not getting anything new to sync.
Maybe an update will fix it.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know that you're not alone, and that it's not limited to your phone.

Seems to be a common problem - I've also got exactly the same problem on my Desire with 4.0.4
I had issues with stock client and an exchange account too, honestly, after so much researching, i just got Enhanced Email from the market, works so much better
I tried Touchdown as a replacement. It worked fine for 2 weeks. And now, similar problems are back with Touchdown as well. It is now happening at least once a day. All mails get deleted, and downloaded again. The only difference is that Touchdown downloads mails faster than the stock email.
So, I believe the problem lies with ICS 4.0.4 and how it handles Exchange services. I am not sure if google is even ready to recognize this problem. I had posted this issue in google forums, and no one from google have answered anything.

I'm assuming this works OK on gingerbread? If not could be a problem with the exchange server

While I have not tested this exchange server when my Nexus S was running gingerbread, there are others in the company who are connecting to the same exchange server from their gingerbread phones without any problem.
So I am assuming this works on gingerbread. Is there any setting that need to be looked at the exchange server when the connection is from a ICS phone? Just trying to think differently.
Hi,
Just wondering if there's been any updates on this?
Same problems on my Desire HD running IceColdSandwich 8.6.1... with emails syncing ok, but no exchange calendar sync...
...weird in that no error messages comes up when i press directly to sync calendar, but yet no data coming through.
Like I said though, emails and even contacts are coming through to the device ok.

My problem got resolved by doing factor reset & flashing Google factory images as I was on stock ROM. You can try format of /system in cwm recovery and flashback the ROM. This could be a corruption in Exchange connected. You should take complete backup though.
Alternatively you can try using another email client and see if calendar syncs. There are many in play store.
Right now I am on a custom JB ROM and every thing is fine.

I had this problem since I had to reconfigure exchange after out server was migrated. I disabled the calendar sync and the issue did not reappear. Not sure if that is related or just a coincidence.
When I turned on Auto Sync. I get the message, "Sync is currently experiencing problems, it will be back shortly". I can't sync my contacts at all. I also tried Contacts Sync Fix(app), and thay didn't seem to help.
Please any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Same problem here, may be their servers currently unavailable.
Same, getting a error also. Must be the servers then.

I'm not so sure about that. Can you check the date the sync was last successful? My sync date on my Galaxy S3 was a few months old (in Feb I think). I think (at least I) am running into the problem described in http://code.google.com/p/android/is...s Owner Summary Stars&groupby=&sort=&id=42641. I tried a few suggestions there like clearing out my contacts data etc. And then I deleted my account and recreated it and the problem is worse now. I don't get a last successful sync date at all anymore. No errors. But no syncing either. I can create new dummy records and it will eventually (a few minutes later sync). And changes I make on the phone will also eventually reflect in the cloud. Meanwhile no problems syncing on my Nexus 10. But if I change a real record (possibly a Google+ account), it never syncs up.

Well I removed my google account yesterday and re added it and now everything syncs up fine. My last sync time was about 5 minutes ago. It syncs constantly throughout the day since I use G+.
I have the same problem. If I clear the contacts data, it'll sync but only once. If I add something on my phone or on the website, the sync won't work again until I re-delete the contacts data again.
I have this for about 3 weeks now. I even reinstalled the ROM, but not helped.
Acer E350 with Android 4.0.3 (with 5 different updates, even with the first version). Everything worked correctly until May 15.
I solve this problem, I think...
Google Account Dashboard -> Account -> Security, I deleted all (mobile) apps*connections to my account, then deleted my Google Apps account on Android and reinstalled it. Now I can access everything again!

I've been having this issue for the past week and can't seem to fix. I've gone to Settings and deleted cache and data, Google contacts will resync and bring the contacts back, but then a short time later, they are gone. I've done this about a hundred times already. I've also gone and deleted duplicate contacts, installed an app to fix broken contacts, all to no avail. I don't know what else to do at this point, very frustrating. I'm having this issue on different roms that I flash.

I'm a little late to the game here, having recently acquired a One, but this fix worked perfectly for me. So far it's been a few hours and the sync still refreshes without issue. Kudos.
Which settings?

I can't find this settings. Does anyone know where this settings is at? This sync error is heavily draining my battery.
Anyone who flashed the new android L factory image facing this issue where not all the contacts from exchange server are getting sync'd?
Not working for me either. Also calendar from Exchange (Office 365 in my case) is not getting synced, and I cannot even see it in the list of available calendars.

Can you sync email normally? I couldn't even sync email since it told me exchange services has stopped every seconds
E-mail sync works fine, and even the Exchange policies came through correctly (PIN & encryption in my case). Posted question to Google Product forums as well.
UPDATE: Now after 2,5 hours of waiting, I do see calendar items and also contacts being synced from Exchange, so I'm considering this working for me at least for now.
My exchange is not working. Just syncing mail forever (nothing ever comes up) and calendar wont show. I have cleared data for exchange and gmail and deleted and readded the account several times. No luck at all. Please help me, I need to get to my work mail!!
Just an update. The issue is now resolved.
Here is what I did: I completely removed the exhange server account. Reset phone. Create exhchange server account and let it do it's thing while it was pulling down the info rather than try to much around with the phone this time around. Worked just fine. All contacts / emails / calendar everything sync'd correctly. I am connecting to outlook.office365.com.

During the time for syncing, have you received any notification ( error) which tells you the "Exchange services has stopped" ?

Hi, please help me. I have a company Exchange account on my N5 and everything works well, except the contacts sync. If I create a new contact on Nexus 5, it won't be sync to Exchange. In the opposite direction - from desktop to N5 - works well. (I choose the "Exchange contact", if I create a new contact, please tell me other something...) All the other syncs work well, like calendar, e-mail, only this way doesn't work. So what is your opinion, your method can help me as well? Or it is a bug in Lollipop? If I remember, it worked well with 4.4.4, but I'm not sure
I deleted all phones from Exchange (there were N5 a few times and my last phones as well) and my Exchange account from phone as well. Next I sync and the result is: when I create a new contact on the N5, it will be appear in the "Recommend Contacts" account. Then I can move it to "Contacts" account. It isn't complete solution, but better then earlier
Hi everyone,
I've had a Pixel 2 (128 GB), since November. Had no issues until 2-3 days ago, I noticed that under the notifications it says "Syncing mail..." and just stays there forever. I've got 3 different mail accounts (Gmail, Hotmail, work), I've turned off syncing to all 3 accounts but the notification remains. I'm unable to force stop, and the only way to make it go away is to turn on airplane mode and reboot the phone. But the moment I turn data back on the message comes back.
Anyone got any clues as to what's going on?
Thanks.
Had this issue, too. Removed my Outlook Mail Account and added it again... Solved the problem for me.

Same issue happening for me as well......Cleared data and cache, didn't fix it, removed account and put it back, still didn't fix it. Seems to have started after the most recent Gmail app update.
gmail has been very buggy with this phone. Emails come late or don't sync until multiple attempts.
I have the exact same issue on a Nexus 6P. It happened during the Oreo beta, then went away after public release. Came back this week. I have done all of the steps above - still a constant notification. Super annoying.
Same thing here on OnePlus 3 Oreo
It just started happening last week on my OnePlus 3 with Android Oreo and it annoyed me enough to Google the problem and I landed here. I haven't tried anything yet and not going to (too much work to resync multiple accounts) - this seems like a bad app update. Going to wait it out until the next one.
Same issue, some more info
I have the same issue, it seems to be related to work accounts going through Exchange. If you remove your work account the notification goes away. But if I add it again I still have the same problem. It is also only an issue on Oreo, I have seen that OnePlus users are now having the same problem after updating their devices. For now I have configured my work Exchange email to use IMAP, this gets rid of the syncing message but email is no longer pushed, it gets synced every 15mins
Alternatively you can un-install updates from Gmail and turn off auto update on the Gmail app and then add your Exchange account, this seems to get rid of the constant mail syncing message.
Got the same issue on my HTC 10 after upgrading to Oreo, tried removing and re-adding the exchange account and clearing cache and data but nothing gets rid of it.
I am getting this on my OG Pixel. Probably not something Pixel/Pixel2 related, sounds a lot more like Oreo/Gmail APP related (not specifically gmail itself, just the app).
If I had to pose a guess, this is likely Exchange sync, where some function of exchange sync in gmail is causing the app to prompt this constantly. I won't venture a guess what, though I have a theory. In either way, it's annoying and seemingly benign. as in, it causes no problems either with sync or with the phone, but if you're like me and like to have a neat and tidy notification bar, it will drive you utterly mad.
This comes and goes for me, it's not consistent. Usually toggling WiFi on and off makes it go away after connecting and reconnecting to a network. I have an Exchange account added.
I found out that my issue was that I my outlook already syncs with my Gmail, so i didn't actual have to add my outlook account. It was "gmailified" already.
Solved this issue on my Samsung M30s
I tried all the methods shared by other users, however finally I logged out and login again my email account, then restarted the device to resolve this constant syncing email issue.
I hope it would be helpful to others as well.
