Best ROM to maximize battery life? - Google Pixel 4a Questions & Answers

I replaced the battery in my 4A to get the battery life back but had no luck.
After switching to a Realme phone, I realize how much I miss the Pixel experience.
Is it possible to boost the battery life with some custom ROM? Worth it? What else should I try?
P.S. I'm currently in Ukraine, and it's challenging to buy a new Pixel here. Logistic issues, currency losing its value drastically, war...

You can easily control battery usage with Pixel 4a and stock rom may rooting with Magisk and using the LSposed (Zyrgist) module. This will make you P4a very customizable and controllable with all sorts of brilliant mods...esp for the battery. If your ok with DIY, it's actually pretty damn fun...imho. As for ready to go custom ROMs...I'm sure someone will be able to advise you...I've always just DIM with magisk + mods.
btw...hope you're safe bro...glory to Ukraine!

thanks for sharing your experience! very insightful; I never tried this software. Does it take much time to set up?
upd: will Google Play continue working after I make this to my P4A?
I guess I hastened with enrolling my P4A in receiving beta Android 13

In 2011, I installed MIUIv5 on my HTC Desire S, and this was something not any tech-savvy guy dared to do The show went on with my LG G2 D802, N5's elder bro, which was much easier to flash than HTC.
However, after I got a job and less geeky hobbies (and bricked my Huawei), I was done with all this stuff.
So now, I'm not that confident about myself, but... why not?

[Poll][Discussion] MIUI

Hello fellow XDAers,
I am waiting for MIUI 9 to drop so we can pull that into the kitchen and cook. I am going to attempt to work with the new system, I haven't ported anything after Jellybean. So with that, I wanted to see who was on-board to potentially want to try MIUI.
Two things; One - I am not saying I am for sure going to be successful, but I will try. 2; MIUI 9 release date is expected to be end of May or early June 2017.
Feel free to have a discussion of MIUI here, I will also use this thread for small updates in regards to MIUI.
--- Small Post Update ---
MIUI 9 ?
Here is a small list of features to potentially look out for in the new version of MIUI. This is a leap forward into Nougat from MIUI 8.
Multi-window support
Quick-reply from notifications
Optimised dose mode
RAM optimization
Improved data saver
Always-on VPN
Call screening feature
Dual space feature
Dual apps
I have honestly never once run a MIUI ROM. Im not quite the flashaholic i used to be (especially now, as finicky as the v20 seems to be), but i could be game for flashing it a few times to kick the tires, see how it rolls.
Am i to understand that it does not have a home screen/app drawer for stock launcher ala iOS? it does retain androids ability to change launchers?
Is there anything "must see" on MIUI? ...not so much eye candy·· I don't care about bling so much, im all about that utility.

Hello! We have all been there with the flashaholic syndrome. It's a fortunate disease ? the V20 is a unit that is quite more finicky than most, but surely not the worst.
Initially, this will be a project starting off with the 918 and working into other variants as I relearn Android and what the new systems look like. It is a launcher that emulates that of an iOS landscape. Yes, you still have all of the ability of changing launches, etc. Must "see" would be animations, style, small 'functionality' pieces like that of the battery bar rather than a battery icon and so on.
It's more or less a eye candy piece of OS rather than something slim, although it is still smaller than a factory image. More "bloated" than a aosp rom but still functions greatly under the right environment.

I have attempted MIUI 8 but there are too many differences in the framework(MM vs N) to patch correctly. I was going to patch 9 in once it releases but if you want it you can have it.
Last time I had miui is when i ported it to the skyrocket in the jellybean era. Would love to see it again. Back when porting ROMs was simple

Would love to have someone seriously try to get a stable Miui going. Ran it back in my old Droid X days and really enjoyed it. Good luck and I hope you can do it.

Are you talking about Miui 8.2 the stable global builds?

Why custom room?

I see a few "home-brewed" roms out there but not with their difficulties to install and possible soft bricking.
I don't see any of these roms beating out simply sticking with stock, rooting, exposed framework w/ gravity box, V4A, and secure settings.
This is all that is needed for me to be happy. Until an official rom comes out that has this phone figured out with gapps and have all these mods built in and a bit safer to flash, then maybe then.
So, all in all, I'm happy until this happens. Any one else happy with their set up as of now and if an official rom comes then fine time to play some more?

Because custom rooms on phones are much cooler. You can flash any color paint you want on the walls and even flash yourself a man cave. J/K. But seriously, this is the first phone I have ever owned that I'm actually satisfied with the stock Android experience. When I was using an HTC Evo 3D back in the day, I grew quite fond of MIUI so I would love to see an Oreo version of that down the line. For now I'm sticking with stock. I never tried Lineage OS so I may try that as things progress, but not as a daily driver. There is a version of Lineage for my Nvidia Shield TV that I may duel boot to and play with before I try it on my Pixel.

There are a lot of MIUI launchers, if that's the experience you're looking for - see https://play.google.com/store/search?q=miui launcher . (An app is an app, regardless of which phone it's running on, so the fact that a particular app is running in an HTC won't change anything about it much, if at all, it's just the launcher that makes the real difference.)

What I was actually stating is that the stock Pixel ROM is actually quite nice and useable even for a power user. Whereas the stock ROM for other phones I've owned were the opposite so I actually needed to run a 3rd party ROM to truly enjoy my phone. As far as MIUI, the launcher was not the reason I liked it so much. In fact, I really enjoy the Pixel launcher. (#1) When running a real MIUI ROM you have the ability to master toggle Root. This is a security feature and you can turn root off entirely when not needed and turn it on only when needed. (#2) The built in firewall is very handy. It not only allows you to select which apps can connect to the internet and which ones cannot but specifically which app processes can and cannot. I am able to stop Google services from sending anonymous info behind the scenes while keeping basic functionality of Gapps. (#3) The built in permission manager. Much more advanced than the permission manager on our Pixel 2 phones being that on MIUI there is a list of permissions most people don't know exist. These permissions are not configurable and hidden in most ROMs such as the ability turn off an apps access to your phones unique ID (IMEI, serial #, etc). These advanced permissions can be configured for both user and system apps alike. Again, just giving an app the bare minimum permissions it needs to function correctly without anything extra or intrusive. In addition, I really like the settings menu layout as well as additional settings not found in most AOSP ROMs. However, the last version of MIUI I really used like this was Jelly Bean based so I can only imagine how far it has come since then and I'm looking forward to trying an Oreo based version on my Pixel some time in the future.
I was about to purchase pixel 2 this weekend. While big brother (pixel 2 XL) having certain screen QC issues, I was thinking to get smaller one (even though - not big fan of small screen, small battery and huge bezels, but whatever). I remember my good old days with Nexus 5 with tons of custom ROMs. I was thinking the is going on right now with pixel 2 family.
I was shocked that there''re no custom ROMs so far. Wow... Even TWRP is in beta stage, but pixel 2 has been released months ago. That's weird....
Am I missing smth or got blind all of sudden? Why there''re no custom ROMs???

Anyone working on TWRP?

Hey guys, I wanted to ask if someone is already working on porting TWRP to the 3a?
If not I might give it a try myself. But I don't really have any experience in porting to a new device. So if someone knows a decent guide I am all ears.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1943625
I hope that someone would try and compile twrp for the 3a. Maybe we can all pitch in for donations to entice someone.
I have a bit of experience in compiling ROMs, but I never tried to port something to a new device before.
That's the reason why I was hoping someone else with more experience is already working on it...
I will do some reading up on the topic later on, depending on the complexity I might try it either way.
I am kinda surprised that one isnt already out. As much as this phone sold thought there would be more development,,,but its only been what a month?

Do you think we could just flash a GSI with fastboot and it would work?
Or do we need to disable verified boot first somehow (haven't had a Treble device yet so I don't really know how it works...)?

I think with Android becoming more polished with each version and cherry picking custom rom features there becomes less and less a need for custom ROMs. I love having choices but ultimately always returned to stock rooted with a custom kernel with my 2xl.

I have to be honest. I am not a fan of pie, and the fact so many things are missing that are pretty much standard for every custom room is annoying too.

Well the biggest issue is the horrible volume controls, next we have the fact that volume to skip songs is not there, full control over the nav bar to change its hight and layout, moving the clock, showing the date next to the clock, circle battery, having recents work without needing to leave the pixel launcher enabled, also the burn in protection and power saving features that some rooms have for oled screens.

With the DU RC for the Pixel 3A XL, Gapps are included in the ROM. It's all flashed in Fastboot. There was a comment on their Discord channel about Gapps being included in the ROM and the response was something like, this is just how it will be in Pie.
Of course this has nothing to do with our need for someone to compile TWRP for our device, but I am sure someone will get to it eventually. We all hope.

It's good to know you can run it. I'm surprised it is so fluid. In my experience even Pixel 3a is a bit slow on the latest Pixel UI.
I honestly think Samsung's UI, or Pixel's Android 11 UI is better than Pixel Android 12/12L/13 UI (especially the quick action and lock screen layout), so I wouldn't try this.

Question Lineage OS 20 makes Pixel 7 Pro a much better phone(especially with Nikgapps, core, or basic)

Anyone agree? Performance is better than the stock. And gaming is overall better too. It's basically as if you're having a Pixel 8 DEVICE in the palm of your hand when it's just Pixel 7. I bet if Pixel 8 came out it'd be using lineage os 20 performance and stability. Anyone agree with that too?
One of the biggest set backs are the camera with custom OS
Afaik the camera doesn't perform the same.
it does on pixel phones, its just placebo
Have you tried crDroid? I'm still on November build stock rooted . Debating between that and lineage once I update, curious how they compare

You don't have music search or others features uniques to pixel on LineageOS but you can have them with a module on magisk if I'm not wrong
Lineage OS is great. Battery life is amazing. Performance is solid. And weekly updates via built in updater works fantastic. It's a clean OS ... Doesn't have all the bells and whistles but you can add some via magisk mods ... Overall, if you like a clean AOSP look and feel, you should run this. I've used Lineage since it was first introduced to the Pixel 7 Pro as an alpha then beta and then official .. take it from someone who's used it a lot . There is no ROM like it.
What about the call screening feature on Stock? This is the primary reason I will probably stay with Pixel indefinitely! Better than sliced bread! In fact as much as I hate curved screens (the 7 Pro's is not as bad as some) I will tolerate the curve just to have the phone calls from scammers/spammers, and morons eliminated completely!

So then the app somehow knows it's being run on a Pixel? Maybe it "sees" the Tensor chip? I wonder because why doesn't it work when you install the app on a non-Pixel phone?
