Question Pixel 6a Fingerprint scanner flaw - Google Pixel 6a

Anyone else experiencing problems with the 6a fingerprint. It's unlocking even with the non-registered fingerprint. Is this a widespread issue?

Yes, seems widespread looking at various reports. A fix will probably come.
Hope 6a is not a phone with a bunch of various issues just like its big brothers.

Don't worry, an update will probably fix the problem.

I'm not seeing this as a widespread issue. Where did you see that? From AP there were only 2 devices that supposedly showed this bug whereas the staff none had the problem. I mean it hasn't even been delivered yet.

One guy with a pre release version does not a widespread issue make. We'll know more tomorrow. It very well might be but isn't yet.

The units with the said issue tested by the reviewers are not pre-production units, those are the final units without a retail imprint.
Here's another one(at 14:47):

Ok that's 2. Pre distribution then. Let's wait this one out before you jump to conclusions. AP couldn't replicate the issue so I'm a little leery on assigning a flaw because of 2 reports. As I said it might be more widespread but we'll know more tomorrow.
Aside, who hands someone a phone that's locked? If anyone handles my phone it's because I've given them access. I wonder if the FPR (possible flaw) will unlock a banking app that is bio-metric? That would be an interesting test and bigger issue if there is indeed a problem.

Counted the one from beebom as the 3rd one?

There are actually more reports via a Google search.
But yeah, I'm not worried yet because I don't think a software update will not fix it, I just hope the update arrives before the retail units go to hands. But since Google took a very long time to fix issues with its big brothers, I'll not get a retail unit until it's fixed first.

@Virgo_Guy A mere bag o' shells. I'll make sure that it works correctly when I get it tomorrow and gloat. ;-) If it has a flaw I'll keep it in my sight at all times. But my wife knows all my passwords and our joint account number. So now what? Sleep with one eye open, shower with her to keep her honest? Decisions, decisions.

Just got mine. All set up. Zero issues with the finger print sensor. Works first try with only fingers registered. Went around my office letting people try to unlock with zero success.
This phone is so amazing. I'm coming from the pixel 6, to the S22. I prefer this all day long over them.

Let us know about heating issue when on Mobile Data..
Also let me know if heating issue can be reduced by disabling 5G..

It took like an hour to set up yesterday. Downloading all my apps. Setting everything up. Phone got a little warm which is usual. Since using it normally, including YouTube and playing with the camera, honestly didn't feel the phone get warm at all.
I've disabled 5G as LTE is just as fast where I am (Toronto) so couldn't really help you there.

hello, I just received mine and no problems with the fingerprint reader, I'm the only one who can unlock it.

received mine today and my fingerprint works perfectly fine, and no issue with unlocking it with anyone`s finger prints or my other fingers that are not registered.

Got mine today. Only registered my right thumb, but left thumb opens it too. None of my other fingers do though.
And no, none of my previous devices do this. Not my Pixel 5A and not my OnePlus 7 Pro. My fingerprints are not identical, which is almost statistically impossible.
So yes, the fingerprint sensor is not secure. Please stop going out of your way to defend Google. They are not your friend, they just want your money.

Yes. I just got mine setup yesterday and registered both thumbprints. Then, was able to unlock it with my right index finger (which was NOT registered.) So, it is definitely an issue. Also to note, I'm on T-Mobile and haven't received an OTA update yet. OOTB it is on the April security release. **Interesting note: it seems that Google doesn't even have an unlocked OTA update yet: https://developers.google.com/android/ota

After the update only registered FP will unlock. Before I could use my other thumb but not other fingers. Seems fixed already.

OTA Update

I just got an OTA update. The "details" weren't detailed at all... just "improvements to android." This is just a heads up if you want to check for one. I'm also curious if anyone knows if this brings any improvements?
I don't have a wireless charger (Samsung has it and is supposed to be fixing it) but maybe this will fix the wireless charging problem?

Someone in the other thread said they worked for Verizon and that the last update allows for Samsung pay to work, but since they aren't officially supporting it, the last step is Samsung making a special update to give it the feature, somehow not through Verizon?
Everything is hearsay, anecdotal, and annoying. But that's all we've got I suppose.
The update makes the wireless charging worse for me using the older mini charger, it worked fairly well before the update.
Correct, It unlocks the functionality needed for Samsung Pay, Verizon and Samsung are still negotiating official support. Samsung is not willing to activate Verizon members cards until Verizon makes an agreement.
I hesitantly took this update on my Note5, and so far regret it. Everything was running absolutely fine until the update, then things got weird. I get ANRs, which isn't a terrible thing when seldom, but then the lock screen crashed over and over, and wouldn't let me do anything. Also, during the crash, it showed my home screen wallpaper and contents, which I'm pretty sure is a security concern. Anyways, I had to do a hard reset, and it cleared that issue up, but now boot time is significantly longer and the finger print reader is giving me problems. Not once did I have a problem with the finger print reader before the update. I'll look into this and see if anything in my control is causing this instability.

Get Zimperium stagefright detector from the play store and it will show the device is still vulnerable.
Now I'm not having issues like other users but Antutu scores dropped and things like crossy road are unplayable.
If this is how things are to come I'm done. This device was nearly perfect and now not so sure. I'm still in my 14 day period to return this device, may just do that.
More than likely it's due to the new kernel. With a locked bootloader this is impossible for the user to fix.

Weird, I had no issues. Hopefully it was a fluke and it clears up fo ryou.
Also, it seems to be confirmed that the OTA update does allow for Samsung Pay to work. Now we have to wait for the app to be released to the play store.
This is the Tweet from Will Graylin saying, "soon to be down loadable on Google Play for Verizon customers. Hoping in the next week or so."

All these Google Pixel 2 issues have me worried...

So my GP2 is due to arrive tomorrow and I'm excited but also worried. With all the reported issues, I'm wondering if I shouldn't just cancel my order and stick to my original Pixel phone. It seems to work just fine and it's paid for. I wonder how many of these devices there are that are reporting issues. I imagine that people like us who roam in XDA pay much closer attention to issues on devices, but I'm seeing these stories posted in other Android Forums as well. I don't remember there being this many issues right out of the gate with the original Pixel. I'm kind of bummed now.
Its mainly the Pixel 2 XL having issues. Dont be worried
I haven't heard anything bad about pixel 2 aside from the bezels.

There is one known real issue with the Pixel 2, which Google has acknowledged, the clicking sound and high pitched whine that some (not all) phones have: https://productforums.google.com/fo...!msg/phone-by-google/XuQgtm5dK8I/7SZD7EfxAAAJ https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2/help/clicking-phone-calls-t3691069 https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2/help/clicking-sound-pixel-2-t3692574

Clicking sound aside, I would not worry. You're right that it's the people with problems who tend to post here at XDA and on reddit and elsewhere. It can create the impression of vast problems, when in fact 99% of people are fine or having a great experience. So certainly no reason to cancel your order, before you even know what your experience of the phone will be. Don't you get a 30 day return period anyway? Try the phone out, see how you like it, and if you find it has problems or not worth it, then return it. But if you wanted it in the first place, enough to place an order, it's worth at least giving it a try.
Personally, I think the phone is really great and I even have the clicking issue mentioned above (but again many do not). I'm working/waiting to resolve that, but don't intend to give up on the phone.
Well, I got my GP2 20 minutes ago and it is all setup (and currently updating all my apps). So far no noises whatsoever. Screen looks AWESOME as well. Here's to my fingers being crossed!

No, performance is fine. The camera is brilliant with the modded camera app. I find all the Xiaomi stuff littering the phone a nuisance although I have removed as much as I can without rooting. (I used to root every phone I owned but need flawless Google Pay - always - and don't want to play whack-a-mole with Google).
I resisted setting up a Xiaomi account - why would I have an account with a phone manufacturer? I'm not really a fan of Mui but with a Google Pixel Launcher it's good enough but I am finding the lack of proper notifications on email less than stellar. I like the Xi charging; OnePlus have never done this. Google's Nexus 4 - I think - did and I was hooked from then on.
There are two issues with Xiaomi really. The over riding issue is security. In my mind timely security updates are essential for any phone manufacturer wanting to be taken seriously. And the second is all the data collection that Xiaomi try to do on me; they seem me as a legitimate subject to data mine and advertise to; I'm not.
So I was hoping the Pixel 4 might finally get Google back on to the straight and narrow that the Nexus phones found. Alas no; it seems the Pixel 4 are stylisticly dead in the water with chin and forehead size bezels as gross as they are. So it looks as if I'll be returning to the OnePlus fold if they can master a through-the-screen camera and finger print scanner on the back where it should be.
I had been running a OnePlus since the the days of the One and went to 3, 5 and 6. I like OnePlus. Reasonable performance; regular updates and close to pure Android.
But liking a phone (why do we still call it a phone - its so much more?) liking a phone is very personal and your mileage will vary from mine.
Any new information about the new update?

General worst phone ever

I have owned a lot of Android phones but I have to say, this is the worst one ever.
Dropped network connections, drifting GPS, bad fingerprint scanner, unresponsive apps, and overheating. I have 2 of these phones and they both suffer the same issues. I have tried all the updates on both phones and have done multiple factory resets. This has to be an embarrassment on the part of google.
Looks like a lottery I own one pixel 6a and I didn't notice any of issues you mentioned, maybe fingerprint is a little bit clunky some times, but that's just it.

I hate to agree, but I AGREE. This is by far the worst Pixel I've owned.
Definitely the worst android phone i've had.
Really slow to switch between normal and work profile
Can't even register my right thumbprint as it keeps saying unreadable but works on 4 other phones in the house quite fine
Battery life is terrible. I use it as my work phone and it mostly sits on standby but still only gives me about a day or two with almost no use.
Just a poor device. Very much doubt i'd ever get another Pixel of any kind. Seems they've had bad software updates several times
No issues, running the Sept update on two phones. No problems with data, GPS, fingerprint ( which is the 1st time ever that I have used it, and I did it because people were reporting issues ), etc...
I will say though that the September update has resolved my fingerprint issues. Time will tell if everything else has improved.

Exactly, I don't understand why people are all up and arms about the monthly being late. Are you in a rush for something? If you have ants in your pants and itching to update something, just reflash your current version to curb your addiction. Everyone needs to relax and stop opening meaningless threads. Be patient and just wait for the update to come out.
Well, maybe because one of the reason they bought the phone is that it should be the first to get each monthly security update. It's google update for google products after all.
Turned out, this month, my S23U is getting update faster than my P7P.
Am not itching or b*tching about update. I just find it funny that google is lagging behind in an area where they should actually excel. Not to mention they only have less than 20 phone models in their portofolio to manage as well. Lol

And how many of the 1 million Samsung devices did get the update this month?
Samsung is known to have a history of taking back or stopping updates due to massive problems. Google isn't the best update company too.
Better late and stable than early and buggy.

Well, consider that samsung, within one month, sold 1.1 million unit of s23 series alone globally, and those series been updated/getting march 2023 update,
i'd say, 1 million then.

Probably the same reason people talk about Pixel in Samsung forums. Justify a purchase, feel the need to lord it over if something is presumed better on one, really like their phone and want to convince others to like them too, tribalism, cult status.. all kinds of things. I just take it as entertainment on a Sunday morning. I do like the size specs on the S23 mini but then again it's a Sammy so...
As for the topic at hand I think if Google at least gave a reason for the delay that would appease many folks but that doesn't seem to be forthcoming. There are always little bugs we're hoping to squash with each monthly and maybe that's why everyone is wondering when. Even the columnists at AP and 9to5 are wondering and mashing the update button so for people to say just wait, what's the big deal, cool your jets etc. it is a little disingenuous.

There are always little bugs we're hoping to squash with each monthly and maybe that's why everyone is wondering when. Even the columnists at AP and 9to5 are wondering and mashing the update button so for people to say just wait, what's the big deal, cool your jets etc. it is a little disingenuous.

the one big important thing against Sammy is Knox and Warranty lose when bootloader unlock. You w8 big part of new product because you want to keep warranty.
Unrelated to the update scenarios, I'll say this...I had the pixel 5 and swapped to a Samsung note 20 ultra which I used until getting the p7p. If I'm honest, the note has a way more premium feel to it, holding it, looking at it, using it blows the p7p out of the water. I've been swapping back and forth between the 2 and even at 3 cycles old the Samsung holds it's own.
