When someone steals a phone the first thing they usually do is a factory reset. "Factory Reset Protection" (FRP) is supposed to protect the owner by denying access to the phone unless the owners passcode is applied even if the phone has been reset.
One main problem with this form of protection is that once the phone has been reset the owner can no longer track the phone using the "Find my phone" app or any similar aftermarket application. Sure, the thief can't use the phone but the owner also loses all hope of ever finding their phone again.
But, what if there was some way to make sure that the Google account associated with the owner could remain associated with the phone even after a factory reset? This way the thief believes they have successfully reset the phone. They still can't use it unless they input the correct security code, but the owner can still track the phone once it has been powered back up and turned on.
Would something like this be possible to create?

Yeah, but there are too many loser's out there happy enough to have an expensive phone of someone else's even if all they can use it for is wifi. Shoot, there are enough of them out there willing to steal your phone knowing that all it's going to be is an expensive paperweight. They don't care as long as they think they have something expensive.

Keeping the phone with you at all times.
Either in your hand or pocket in unsecured locations. Watch the people around you, not the phone when playing in the real world. Think.
Okay, yeah. That's what I thought you meant. See, the problem is I do that religiously and I still lost my phone. In this case what happened is that it was in the inside pocket of my jacket. I bent over and didn't notice that it had slipped out. I had never had problems with that before so didn't think it would have been a problem then. Didn't notice the phone missing until I had gotten home. Tracked my phone to a location with lots of people. The thief turned the phone off and has obviously reset it because I can no longer track it.
So... Physical security still doesn't account for "**** happening."
Which brings me back to the original question. Couldn't a set of code be written that keeps the Google account tied to the phone even after a factory reset has been performed?

Well I have never lost a cell phone in 12 years or for that matter broken one. I have "lost" them inside the house or van temporarily but that is rare.
Secure it so it can't fall out. I find bdu cargo pockets are perfect for my N10+'s.

No matter what you do once it's out of your hands, it's gone.
Actions... consequences.
A third party app like this. That just protects the data as does frp.
A hidden stand alone gps tracker... smaller ones exist that could be embedded but that's getting DOD spook crazy to solve a simple problem of accountability on your part.

In theory you could set aside part of the partition that wouldn't get wiped or affected by reinstalling system with the code you suggest, or onto another chip. But this then means it becomes a security & privacy issue for phones that are sold or given to wives/partners etc, and then what about the next owner, do they get to have their account also permanently associated with phone? So, no this will never be allowed by Google/phone companies. As Blackhawk says, physical security is the where it's at, ultimately.

Does anyone know if this phone has the ability for someone else to turn on the internal gps and track my phone. If so how do I disable that disability?
The phone itself doesn't. Some carriers do allow for extra services that do location tracking but all of them that I'm aware of notify the user that they were just tracked (for example if a mom were to track her daughter she'd get an sms saying so)
There are a few third party applications such as http://www.air-watch.com/ which after a device agent is installed on the device it can be tracked without the user knowing.
I guess what I should be asking. Is there a reliable mobile firewall that will stop stuff from coming in that you don't want when you don't want it?
If you have any cell phone, 'they' can find you if you are paranoid.
As for the TP2 GPS, you can turn it off for non-911 use and simply not install any tracking software.
Indeed ... "They" can track you reguardless of what you do short of turning the phone off. So I wouldn't worry about them 'cause theres nothing you can do.
Husband/Wife/Mother/Father/Mistress can only track you if you enable it for more than 911 or install an app as mentioned above.
And as for a firewall of sorts, even if you used one it would probably only work on the data side of things, I suspect they can receive your gps coordinates over the radio band so any way you could firewall that would also disable the phone, in which case you can just turn it off instead.
... and as a wise bumper sticker once told me ... its not paranoid, if they are really after you.
trackme
I ran a program called 'trackme' on my TyTTN. It will ping the GPS occasionally and send the data to a website. It's cool because you can use their site or have it do a local web server. The site will keep a file you can drop into google maps and it will show you a path. If you can lower the update to once every half hour or so maybe it won't eat the battery so much. I'm sure there is better by now, but this worked.

YES, YES YES, YES.
There's nothing u can do about being tracked through GPS!
US Federal law mandates that all US cellphone have GPS (enabled).
Some kids died (playing around on a boat) a few years back and since then EVERY time you place a call your location gets recorded
The only way is to take the battery out of the phone.
Good Luck.

1) i'm not an american so american laws have no basis on me.
2) It's not that i've done anything illegal or am worried about being tracked but i believe it was best said by Benjamin Franklin

my personal privacy above all else.

Do what you want. They know what cell tower you are on, and they know the relative distance that you are from the tower. That gets them close. And if you are seen by a second tower, they know pretty accurately.

What amazes me is you all think this is a joke, but really do you really want anyone to trace you just cause they can??
It was Benjamin Franklin that said "Those who give up liberty for security deserve neither liberty nor security"
Really he may have not known about cellphones and cellular triangulation, but his statement is no less relevant today as it was back then.

That statement does not apply when you chose to reveal yourself by turning on a transmitter. If you want that liberty, turn off the phone, and don't use the internet with a traceable IP, etc.
There was something on the local news a few weeks ago about some web based tracking/spy services that are becoming popular.
You sign up for the service and you can either a) download an installer file which you can install on an unsuspecting phone or b) in some cases, send a MMS or Email continaing a disguised installer. After the installer is running, you can remotely activate the GPS, activate the camera and get a live video stream, activate the microphone to turn the phone into a listening device, monitor all outgoing txt messages, web history, etc, etc.
They even showed one of the websites where you can buy the software from, but I think they blurred out the domain name.
So, you could have alot more to worry about then just GPS tracking

Hi Manhattan. As far as the mic goes, i'm not sure. But for a factory reset just go to settings then backup/reset then at the bottom it should say factory reset.

Welp, I have done a factory reset. I have sacrificed all my apps, settings and what not (unchecked the restore apps option) -and it was all for naught. The mic still doesn't record, and I have no idea why or what to do about it.
So what now?
I just purchased it less than three weeks ago,
and now I'm going to have to take it to Samsung and wait a few months to get it back?
What a piece of garbage this tablet is turning out to be.
Have you double checked all your various volume settings? Tried a different recording app or settings?
Thanks for the replies.
I have checked the sounds settings, to the best of my ability. I tried several apps (including the phone -which is the part that makes me most irate about it).
I suppose there could be something I could have overlooked,
but I would imagine the factory reset would have nixed anything I may have overlooked.
I'm so furious at myself for purchasing this, I just want to smash it to pieces.
Alas, that wouldn't solve anything, but leave me out the money I wasted on it and not have even this piece of sh*t to show for it.

How can you say there is no need for the drama? Of course there is a need for the drama. The store where I purchased it has a ten day return policy. After that it's on the warranty to handle gripes. I needed the tablet for reliable and consistent use starting September 10th (tomorrow) and I purchased it on the 23 of August. That's sixteens days ago, which means my options are to send it to Samsung -and wait for however long it takes for them to get back to me.
Selling it as is... wouldn't that be a little dishonest to the buyer and costly to me?
What a more suitable setting for the drama, than this one?
I totally think this is worthy of busting out some wardrobe and props...
break out the orchestra, maestro!
Okay, but seriously... No one else is experiencing this?
I mean it's not exactly like I toss my tablet around or anything.
I can't figure out why the mic isn't working.
Is there no way to determine if it's hardware or software?
I haven't even rooted the thing.
I've done nothing but put it in a case that keeps it well sheltered.
Are these things just really of such poor build quality?
Anyone?

Try and connect your headphones that came with your note and use an app that utilises the microphone, if this works, you probably have one with a faulty Mic or if it worked before, it has developed a fault.
As you seem to be the only one reporting the Mic not working, it may be that you do indeed need to send it back to Samsung if you cannot take it back to the retailer that you purchased it from . If I were you, I would try and take it back to the retailer and explain to them that you understand that it is a few days past their returns policy however if you speak to them nicely, they may exchange it for you out of good will.

I've always had an HTC phone everything from the EVO shift (yee yeah), to the Inspire HD, then got a Vivid, now I'm using this One X AT&T. I've been spoiled by Sense, I can't imagine having to use a Samsung. It's nice, fast yada yada but geeez its bubbly icons kill it for me.
This OneX I can't understand why the All the softkeys or home keys have been changed. The back key is for left hand people, Why does the recent apps button even exist and then put it in the most convenient place? No battery? What I mean to say is no extra battery. Ive always bought an extra battery so that if I don't have a plug-in or charger I got it covered.
Can someone give me any reason why the charge port is on the side?
No SD storage... This is probably the main reason Im done with HTC. A factory reset from the bootloader erases everything on your phone including backups. EVERYTHING ON YOUR PHONE! Not the recovery though...
Is there any way of securing the data so this never happens?
Now my camera has went out. No camera.. Ive tried everything, I even called HTC support they tried and they say "need new hardware". I really hate to tear into this phone.
I never write these vent posts.. I would fight someone lastweek if they talked trash about HTC phones. Maybe I got lemon, it's just One thing after another.
Although it seems like I'm trashing this phone I really love it. I just can't store anything important on it or take pictures, video.. I've read so many posts on replacing the camera but I just hate to tear into it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I never knew how important it was..
No one can say anything bad about the screen on the One X. It's amazing..
Sound is great
Smooth running phone too..
I'm scared to spend money on another HTC product. Maybe there is a way to try out a phone for a couple days that would be great.

I'm wondering why you bought it on the first place.
Almost all of your complaints are hardware ones that you know about before buying the phone?
Personally I don't mind the hardware at all. External SD would be nice but not a big deal. And I like right side unlock buttons.
As far as the camera I think it was just bad luck or damage. Haven't heard about it happening much at all.

My niggles:
They put pogo contacts on the phone... but couldn't be bothered to make anything that actually uses them.
9.xGB of storage when I was expecting the typical 14.xGB for a phone advertised with 16GB.
HUGE pain to get root early on, though partially att's fault.
The phone loses signal if I leave it face up. (really gotta find time to get that fixed...)
Other than that, it's been an awesome phone.
I think HTC could've improved more in the music department and camera, but I agree with RollTribe. It's not a perfect phone, and there will never be a perfect phone imo. For me it was the software and hardware (GPS works!!) that made me stay.
Overall I would consider the XL solid. I'm going to look past the HTC One, though, and wait for the next generation.

I think the back button is in a perfect spot for right handed people, it is right in reach of my thumb when held in my right hand.
You complain about the recent app button, but I don't follow your complaint. It exists so you can multitask, you say it is in a convenient spot and I agree, easily accessed by the right thumb when held right handed.
Extra battery? I have never found myself wanting to buy extra batteries for any phone ever. I just charge mine when required. This phone lasts a full day easy if you are not playing games on it. I am a heavy phone user with maybe 30-50 calls every work day, sync an ics calendar every hour, use calendar, contacts, browser and email a whole bunch. The phone lasts the entire day. These days with my car dock I can play games all day without issue
Charge port on the side makes for easy landscape car docking, perfect for GPS. I slip mine into the car charger often these days, it is one of the easiest phones to get in and out of the dock as the charge port is on the side.
SD storage, again I use my phone for a whole bunch of things and have never gone close to using the full storage. I stream over Spotify via Bluetooth to my car head unit. I have about 20-30 user apps installed. I just can not fill the phone. I even have the 16GB model from Hong Kong while most around me who bought from Telstra have 32GB.
I have had my phone for 15 months now and the camera still works perfectly. My last phone(s) was a Nexus One and a Nokia E68(or something) I smashed the camera lens on the Nokia before 12 months, not sure how, but my One XL is fine.
Then the next user, Zodiac:
I like the unlock at the top, easy to reach with right index finger, but can not be accidentally pushed.
Then, antichamp:
pogo pin issues( I initially really wanted to use the pogo pins aswell just for the gimmick until I realized they only seem cool)
1)The pogo pins are used on the desk dock.
2)The USB port actually "locks" the phone in to the car dock, the car dock requires a locking mechanism unlike the desk dock.
3)The pogo pins would cause scratch marks along the back as the pins drag along the case as you slide the phone in and out of a car dock.
4)The pins on the dock would wear out because of #3
5)What is wrong with the USB port?
The phone is easy to get root on. All issues are AT&T, the phone in EVERY other region is a breeze to unlock.
My gripe is weird data issues, where you sometimes need to give the phone a kick (eg via airplane mode toggling) to reset data (3g, 4g or wifi).
This was been improved dramatically though the updates but is still a niggling issue that sometimes crops up.
Also originally I disliked not having a hardware menu key and being forced into the Android 3 dot menu thing. Ofcourse HTC listened and fixed that issue in an update.
When you say sound is great are we talking about the same phone? Can barely hear my phone speakers from the back seat of my car.
That and spotty service/data issues are my only gripes on this phone.

I think I might be having the same issue as you. Does the camera app just freeze immediately and crash? Then says cannot connect to camera when you try to open it again. I would expect this kind of blasphemy if I posted a dumb video on YouTube, but the fact that this is a dev site full of "professionals". I posted a comment against my better judgement to try and find answers or suggestions about my phone. The first response is that
"This isnt the place for that" And then 2nd response is
"Why did you buy the one x, you should have known about these things"
First of all I dont think its constructive to rip someone down for a post when clearly alot of people are having the same problem. And I wish I would have found an honest review of this phone before I bought it. I wish I could have read my post before buying this phone. But for some reason Im a black sheep (to a few) for giving my opinion on very important flaws that anyone should be concerned with. I love HTC and have 6 devices prior to this one.
Im not sure who (the 5th reply) twist....? works for and to make statements like never having a storage issue and dont mind the internal card.? I never said anything about the storage. I am commenting on the fact you cant remove the sd card just to make sure the data is secure. And I would love to have a number of how many people use a car dock or computer dock.?? Maybe this guy works for a manufacturer/...///??
I always carry an extra battery and Im not the only person who does. To act like that is unreasonable is just ridiculous.
Of course not all phones are perfect Of course! Why would anyone feel the need to say that...
I love my ONE X It just annoys me that I cant take pictures of my little girl with it. Or store any important data on it. Ive had at least 5 people contact me about the camera issue and are having the same problem.
This last reply to my review and concerns and wanted suggestions takes the cake.
The last comment clearly says that if "you want to secure your data then dont do a factory reset from the boot-loader. It only happens on Modded phones". I have 6 HTC phones and none of them wipe the complete phone to include the external sd. NONE... I wanted to know if it was possible to lock the sd storage or "trick" it to thinking it had an external sd and dont wipe that. If you dont know the answer then fine. I dont see how that is irrational. And I dont think anyone comes to this site because they want to get information on "never modding or rooting there phone." This site is kinda geared towards people who enjoy learning and doing cool, great and ingenious things to make everyone's life better. Or awesome. But to get completely ripped by senior members and the comments being about something other than what I or other members even said is UN professional. This site encourages members to post on General Forumns. I think its 10 before I can move to the big boy pages. But at this rate what could I possible have to gain by it. If I make mistakes or brick my phone then why should I feel like an idiot for wanting people to know why and how it happened to save them a headache? I dont see how typing anymore will stress how childish most of the replies to my posts have been, cannonofcourse out...

I find that external battery packs are way more convenient. You can pick up a 10,000 mah Anker pack for under $50 and it'll charge your phone several times. And it works for any other devices that you might have that charge via USB. And it will work on the next phone that you buy.

Yes, several of us have disagreed with you. But not in any way that can remotely be considered a flame, personal attack, etc.
I was simply pointing out a FACT that the factory reset from bootloader bug exists due to the phone being hacked. HTC could have not have predicted every way user-implemented mods could harm the phone. You have some legitimate criticisms of HTC and the phone. But the factory reset issue isn't one of them.
You asked for our thoughts. We gave them. Or maybe you just wanted to hear from people that agreed with you?

I don't hold the past against any oem. If i like the new phone, i'll buy it.

There is no desk dock for this phone...
For the international version there is, regardless of it's mediocre reviews.
I recently discovered the unfortunate truth of your 2nd point (I'm trying to make my own car dock).
On three and four, wouldn't that indicate a poor design of the phone? (blame the user ala apple's "you're holding it wrong")
There's nothing wrong with the usb port, I just think it would be convienient to both charge the phone and get analog audio out without connecting both the usb and 3.5mm jack.

Hmmm, bad sim slot you say?
If I don't leave my phone face down it loses service. I have to restart it upside down and shake it before it will come back.
Think I could have the same problem?
It's possible. Or it could just be the SIM carrier.

I'm right handed and it really doesn't bother me. I can sympathize with having to get used to differences on devices. It always takes a while for me to get used to things.
I find that external battery packs are way more convenient. You can pick up a 10,000 mah Anker pack for under $50 and it'll charge your phone several times. And it works for any other devices that you might have that charge via USB. And it will work on the next phone that you buy.
Actually I bought one of the "power on the go" packs from radio shack and broke it apart, replaced the battery with a 3600mah I ordered for my evo on accident. It cost about 8 dollars (plus the cost of the extra battery 12 bucks I think) and it charges my phone incredibly fast and about 3 times before I have to charge it back.up. Nothing worse than hearing that beep noise when your trying to get something done.
No idea. It does however work very well with the iBolt car dock. Quick and easy to put the phone in and lock it.
I found this out the hard way as well, but anything on my phone exists other places. I don't consider my phone to be a place to store unrecoverable files. My photos are automatically backed up to G+, contacts and email are on Google, anything else doesn't really matter.
I do try to back up everything to the cloud, via Google drive or I have a media server but it always seems like the one thing I needed is gone forever. I just found out the hard way that a reset from the bootloader took out my whole phone. It just sucks not being able to pull the card out and hold it.
That just sucks. I had to get a warranty replacement at one point due to a bad SIM slot, but the AT&T service center swapped it out no questions asked, didn't even notice that the bootloader was unlocked.
It seems like a certain set of serial numbers are having a hardware issue. I hate to go without my phone to get it fixed but I guess thats what I have to do. Thats the price we pay to have it all wrapped up in one little cool device.
With all of that said, I really do think that people here are trying to help.

I know there are plenty of people that do a fantastic superhuman job. Just hours of searching to find out if someone has or is working on a fix or if I can provide info to contribute seems like so many people just lashing out for no reason.. But maybe Im being defensive.
Thanks
Unfortunately I highly doubt the issues you've brought up can be "fixed".
But...
I'm pretty sure you can change the location of the back button on certain aosp ROMs though.
Using battery case should mitigate the need for a removable battery.
The fact that doing a factory reset from bootloader wipes your phone can't be changed, but a little research on here warns of that in numerous places. And I don't think that's necessarily HTC's fault. It's up to us to educate ourselves about the risks we face when altering our devices.
For instance: TWRP 2.6 has an advanced wipe feature which makes it very easy to wipe your sd card while wiping the usual system and caches. I did that myself just recently, accidentally checked the wrong box and wiped my sd. I lost everything. Without a backup. So many photos of my kids gone for good. But I don't blame TWRP for making it easy to do that. I blame myself for working too fast and not being careful enough.

Did the factory reset thrrough bootloader cause your problems??
If so, all yous gotta do is plug yer phone right into your computer and let windows detect it. Once it finds it, it will send you a window that says something along the lines of having an error with the sd card, from there click the button that says fix errors, and your all set. This happened to me before and I couldnt play music, store or access anything, or use the camera. But now it works perfectly.
And as for the extra battery, the portable chargers provide more battery life with less money. It makes more sense to buy a portable charger even if we did have removable batteries. :good::good::good::good:
Recently I found that someone close to me had been using a purchased spy prog. Thanks to Google alerting me that unauthorized login and sync occurred.
I quickly recognized the phone found the program and cancelled their membership since I originally made the account/email address for them and they told me what password to use. But somehow that phone has continued to sync from their phone.
To this point I've been being safe; I've been messaging or texting lies along w/ truth. Yet somehow all that information makes it back my a simple slip up of words by the other 2 ppl in house. They accidentally repeat in general something I mentioned in text/fb message/phone call/information/etc.
I've literally deleted everything I could find that was left after factory reset. (EVERY FILE!!) I had root and end up with a virus I couldn't remove & didn't want to factory reset. The virus took over screen and no matter what I couldnt get it off. In the end, only way phone company could get it off was access with use of a computer & prog to factory reset. While talking it updated from 6.0 to 7.0. So I'm going to have reroot.
QUESTION FINALLY: How to can I emove the hack or exploit ( or whatever it is) that is reporting or cloneing everything word & information? Yes, I've tried every possible virus/spy pro/spyware/malware/hack/exploit detector remover I read about. PLEASE advise.
The person( I suspect) is currently charged with domestic violence w/ prejudice, I cannot drop the charges they won't allow me. Due to it being domestic violence against someone disabled (me).
**SIDENOTE/QUESTION FOR LAWYERS. The Person was somehow released without bail and i was ordered to leave the house with literally NOWHERE wheelchair accessible to go?? The reason, I suspect snitch (for lack of better word), the Magistrate had already set the bail then a judge on SATURDAY OF A HOLIDAY WEEKEND changed it. Also its hand written, dunno whose initials are on it cant read them. I've NEVER nor has my victims advocate heard of that. I pay slightly less than 3rd of whole house payment accord to other person on the mortgage. I do not qualify for disability only pathetic SSI. The person is more than likely trying to find something negative on me. They have threatened to have me evicted untold times! Im an entirely different person after nearly dying 2 times and was close a 3 rd. That along with being on a ventilator 3 times...if that doesnt change someone you have a serious problem on and finally being in a wheelchair. All caused by a neurological disease. Might I mention I found an old sound recorder that goes with a spy cam according to one specialist and one genius old friend (haven't found hidden cam.YET!) in my room. I do *man* things in the room I pay for. Thought it was illegal to record with sound. Hell or without a person knowing considering by law I'm a tenant**
The person is beyond clueless about technology but their brother worked for govt many yrs ago installing, none other than CAMERAS. He now prides himself as being a computer expert & dev.(he's not bad). He knows LINUX exceptionally well.
Quick Question...should I go ahead with rooting or wait?
PLEASE HELP AND IF POSSIBLE FIND THE FOOTPRINT HE MIGHT HAVE LEFT BEHIND. PRIVATE MESSAGE ME IF NEED MORE DETAILS ON PHONE INFORMATION OR IF A LAWYER (I live in TN)
Galaxy S7 with exynos chipset.
Did have root until att updated after
removing weird virus. Will Root soon.
Hey all. New to the XDA forums, so don't tear into me too deeply.
I work at a tech repair store. CPR Cell Phone repair. Occasionally we get phones that people recycle, throw 'em into 'graveyard' so new employees can practice on a phone without worrying about ****ing up a potentially expensive piece of technology. Now we usually assume these phones are garbage, worth their weight in paper, but with a little free time and the battery from an S22 Ultra that had been ran over by a truck (twice), I managed to get a functioning S22 Ultra from the ashes of 3 different throwaways. A few purchased aftermarket parts from our supplier, and this thing is almost up and running like new.
Now here's the issue. The thing has an FRP lock, and despite my scouring of the internet I have had no success with a solution. The previous owner didn't take the lock off likely because they assumed it was never going to work again and abandoned it as such. If I had contact with the person I would message them in a heartbeat. Anyways, this phone is practically an 1100$ paperweight at this point, and I've lost both hair and sleep trying to get my dream phone functioning as it should. Samsung forums was ultimately unhelpful (said it's more of a 'google thing', which may have boiled down to something the agent just hasn't encountered before) google forums is effectively abandoned (my post is a week or two old, not even so much as an emoticon in the comment section.) And both reddit and my own repair store don't have a solution. Google searches itself are so littered with buyware and garbage (allegedly from the same company) that finding your site with a potential solution was a nightmare.
So my conclusion is either consider the project impossible for an amateur such as myself, or get help from the most useful people so far in the process.
I've tried an ODIN firmware and OS install. Guide did not clarify if I should erase the NAND or not, so I kept the option off.
Any advice or solutions on where to go moving forward is greatly appreciated. I can only lose so much hair.

Excellent help! Beauty of a program worked first time.
Now all I need to do is get the IMEI unlocked and I will be set! Thank you, swell fellow!
Quick question - I have a screen lock on my S22 ultra that I appear to have maxed out my tries to get into my phone and it says 'Try again in 24 hours' but as my phone is prone to restart, means the 24 clock restarts too.
Would this tool remove the lock and allow me access to my data or will it involve a factory reset??

From my experience it seems like it would involve a factory reset. The FRP unlocker removes the google lock, not the lock screen lock.
Hopefully you don't have anything you're gonna miss on your phone, friend.

Thanks man, this actually works (SM-A536B/DS). Windows flags it ofc, but if you run it anyway it's pretty sweet!
Anyway to to get blacklist off? This has been my EXACT same issue. It's KILLING me!
