What happens if a phone with a broken screen is attached to Linux? - General Questions and Answers

I'm trying to help a relative with a broken screen Samsung who did NOT enable Developer options USB debugging.
I searched over 200 XDA threads with the same problem set, where the answer seems to be always the same.
If you didn't turn on USB debugging, you can't turn it on after the fact
However... I'm a firm believer that there is (almost) always a workaround...
For example, what happens if you connect Android to Linux over USB?
I don't have Linux but someone out there might who can run this test and answer the question.
Q: Can you access Android storage from Linux even if you did NOT turn on USB Debugging?

what should happen? same as in windows - nothing. you might have better luck connecting it to TV

computer does not recognize shield

i'm trying to connect my shield to my computer to do some basic android development (i have an app, it works on other devices, want to test it on the shield).
my problem is, when i plug it into the computer, nothing happens. to clarify, i don't mean that the drivers don't install correctly and then i can't do anything. what is happening is actually nothing. the computer (windows 8) does not recognize anything is happening, the device manager does not see any new devices even after scanning for hardware changes.
the shield is in development mode, and has usb debugging turned on, but i don't get any response anywhere. the shield does at least appear to charge over the usb cable, but that's it. listing adb devices also provides no output.
do you guys have any idea what might be going on that the device isn't recognized on any level that i can tell?
It sounds like either the USB port or the cable you're using is faulty.
Have you tried switching USB ports, to see if it's recognized then? And have you tried using a different cable?

If youre just trying to connect thru adb you need the universal naked driver. If the shield isnt being mounted try a different usb port and make sure youre using the shield cable as well. My samsung cable will charge it but i cant transfer data with it.

Hi,
I realize that there might be an answer to this already, however I have been searching for a while and no such answer has presented itself. I have come across other threads on this forum that explain how to get in. However my concern is that these are really old posts and perhaps point to an older version of Android?!? The reason I didn't follow those tutorials is I am afraid of wiping off any data that might exist on the phone (which is not something I would like to do!!!)

CRACKED SCREEN\DIGITZER - NO TOUCH RESPONSES ACCEPTED
So my question is this, can I access the files on here including all music/photos/contacts/messages etc and back up to a WINDOWS PC. Please forgive me if my responses sound noobish to you, as I am not familiar with Android, so might ask some daft questions.

you do not need usb debugging enabled to transfer data from device to pc, my question is, when you plug your device into your pc, does your computer recognize it as a mass storage device and can you see your phone in the list of devices with removable storage ?

[Q] Broken display - no debugging... Help accessing please!

Hi all, can anyone help? I smashed my phone at the weekend and really want to get back in to it if only to turn on contacts sync and see who keeps texting me, but for some reason USB debugging isn't on. Phone is stock.
Plugging in with USB = recognised in device manager as Xperia Z3. I've tried to download Android SDK, and install the USB drivers from the Sony website (says best driver already installed - the ones from the Sony website don't have any kind of installation program so not sure what I'm supposed to do with them!).
I know this isn't easy but can anyone guide me through getting in to it and getting USB debugging on so I can use Android Control? It seems I need to get the phone in to recovery mode so that it automatically enables USB debugging? If I hold down power/volume up a few times or in a weird combination, the LED goes blue and the phone comes up in device manager as 's1boot' and then 's1boot fastboot'. I've tried installing the drivers I've found from DooMLoRD but they don't help me access the phone at all, it still says unable to find the device. adb devices from the adb folder command prompt says no devices (i presume because USB debugging still disabled). I feel like I have made progress but need a bit more progress still to get in, if it is at all possible!
New thread because I can't find anyone with a Sony Xperia Z3 trying this, with the same steps taken/blue LED etc.

Try to use USB OTG+USB mouse, that did the trick for me
no display whatsoever... so having a mouse isn't going to help me sadly! unless i can get the screen displayed on a computer monitor or something?

Cant turn on usb debugging after system update even when its plugged into the pc it wont turn on.. i can still transfer files from phone to pc and pc to phone im not sure whats going on here. Theres no bug reports either and you cant verify apps over usb..

Do a factory reset ?
That didnt work it hasnt worked since day of the system update and that was on a fresh install of the rom before this one.. i think thats just how the system update is...

You may even have seen it while looking through your phone’s settings. It sounds like a high-tech option, but it really isn’t; it’s quite simple and useful.
One beauty of Android is that it has a lot of built-in features, many of which are advanced. If you want to supercharge your phone with mods and whatnot, you can; if you want to use it just as it was out of the box, you can ignore the advanced stuff. USB Debugging is a feature that all users can benefit from, though, so you should know what it does and when to use it.
What Is USB Debugging Mode?
USB Debugging Mode is a mode that can be enabled in Android after connecting the device directly to a computer with a USB cable. The primary function of this mode is to facilitate a connection between an Android device and a computer with Android SDK (software development kit). As the name might suggest, Android SDK is a software suite that’s designed to aid in the development of Android apps.
Ever wondered how a programmer creates apps on the Android? They definitely don’t code them straight on the phone device! That would be nightmarish at best. Instead, they utilize the environment of the Android SDK to code apps on a computer, use USB Debugging Mode to transfer those apps to a device for testing.

But, again, here’s the takeaway: USB Debugging Mode establishes a direct connection between an Android device and a computer and readies it for deeper-level actions. That’s the important part.
In some versions of Android, the USB Debugging Mode feature may be called Developer Mode. With such a name, it can be easy (and reasonable) to think that you’ll never need to deal with this aspect of Android if you never plan on developing anything. That’s not exactly true.
Why Is USB Debugging Mode Important?
USB Debugging grants you a level of access to your device. For example, with Android SDK, you gain direct access to your phone through your computer and that allows you to do things you normally couldn’t, like snag instant screenshots of your device or run terminal commands with ADB. These terminal commands can help you restore a bricked phone–a useful tool for any adventurous Android owner. Without it, you’d have to get a replacement phone.

USB Debugging is also necessary if you ever want to root your Android device. Before an app like One-Click Root can dig into your system and deliver the exploit that roots the device, USB Debugging is necessary to allow that function in the first place.
Yes, the original intention for USB Debugging Mode was only meant for developers who needed to copy data between their computers and Android devices, to install apps on the phone without notifications, and to read log data off the phone. But even if you aren’t a developer, you’ll probably run into a few apps that require USB Debugging Mode to function properly, so this mode does affect you and you should know about it.
Start searching dialer codes for Samsung devices and do be careful on what you do in those service menus.

Just tried that and cant get any codes to work in the dialer or in the apps.. and one says im missing su so i dont know im about to just flash back to the older firmware Security is nice and all but damn they killed it.
I found the problem it was samsung knox if you activate it or use my knox app it disables your dev settings so i ripped knox out of my phone now i have usb debugging..

display and touchscreen dead, no usb debugg : solution for this issue.

usb mtp device, as a usb key
wifi network
cell network
and so on..
so you are here, somebody gave you a smartphone, running android, locked, but you can't neither see display or use touchscreen;
but its starting anyway, you can hear the ringer if you call on it;
how would you do, without usb debugging enabled, to use this electronic technology as a specific usage, like a wifi AP or a usb key?
in an other words, what is the method to restore it and to take the control of it?
you just have a usb mouse can be connected on it. but no display.
[this is mainly destinated to avoid throwing several android hardware to bin, cause it can still poweron.]
