The 13 pro max has been getting universal accolades for its incredible SOT and 2-3 day battery life. On paper and looking at the battery specs- the new S22 Ultra with its new LTPO efficient display should wipe the floor with the 13 Pro Max.
What's everybody's expectation? Will the S22 Ultra finally close the gap and maybe even exceed it or are we doomed to constantly debloating and finding that one hidden Samsung or google feature/ app that keeps sucking the juice from our phone endlessly?
I can't wait to get my hands on my S22 Ultra. I currently have an iPhone 13 Pro Max which is awesome battery wise. I wish I could keep the iPhone for comparisons but Im using it for trade in value. I will add my notes and comparisons as soon as I have it

Yes, credit where credit is due. Apple has fantastic battery life. But I'd say for most people it's around a day and a half which is still incredible. The only downside is... well its Apple and were missing out on a lot of features from the Galaxy. Looking forward to the Ultras battery review.
Reviews for the S22 Ultra are starting to trickle in and battery life is surprisingly disappointing even just comparing it to last year's S21 Ultra. Suffice to say it will not get anywhere close to the 13 Pro Max.

This is truly disappointing since I remember Samsung was trolling iPhone users a few years back in their ads calling them 'wall huggers' and telling them to make the switch. How times have changed..
There is no doubt about the optimization in iPhone due to A15 chip and as some Youtubers call it, black magic on the battery by Apple, we tend to overlook the fact that iOS absolutely freezes background tasks and that's one big disadvantage when you want to upload media in the background and browse some websites. Another factor is fast charging, with the iP13PM taking almost 2 hours to charge to 100% v/s S22U taking an hour. I'd rather go with a phone that can multitask and top up faster that a restrictive and dated OS.

Thanks for sharing that. The first one is slightly concerning especially if that's the same case for downloading and not just for uploading as well. My N20 Ultra takes about 2 hours from completely dead to full status which doesn't bother me since I prefer slow charging instead to lengthen its battery life (I know that's not really true but I've convinced myself that )
My go to source for battery life reviews is gsmarena. They're currently reviewing it and depending on the outcome I'll decide what I'll do. My order from Feb 10 still shows as pending and if the review posts first and the results are disappointing, I'll cancel my order. If it ships, I'll most likely keep it since Samsung is giving me a more than fair value for my N20 Ultra and trade it in for the hopefully notchless upcoming 14 Pro Max.

Also bear in mind that the last Note (N20 Ultra) SD variant had almost 1 hour longer SOT/ better camera pics/ better heat management compared to its Exynos counterpart (multiple reviews confirmed this including mrwhosetheboss).
A decent custom kernel may help boost SOT/ standby time (e.g. arter97 kernel for my OnePlus 7T Pro did wonders).
Before I go into detail, I should note that the S22 Ultra is my favorite phone right now, and is probably the best you can get. I came from the Note20 Ultra, and briefly the S21 Ultra and Pixel 6 Pro. The S22 Ultra is a really great phone, but so were the S21 Ultra and Note20 Ultra. The Pixel 6 Pro is much like a beta phone with great software and features, but stability and 5G reception need improvement. Many reviewers have referred to the S22 Ultra as "safe" and "boring", and I tend to agree. It really is what the Note21 Ultra could have been. With so much focus moving to foldables and rollables, perhaps innovation is stagnant on the traditional slabs.
When compared to the Note20 Ultra, the only noticeable improvements are data speeds, battery life, screen uniformity, and low light photos. Everything else is exactly the same, even how the phone feels. It is not a revolutionary phone by any means, and really is only worth buying if you get a great deal. The only downsides are the weaker vibrate motor and added weight.
When compared to the S21 Ultra, it's pretty much the exact same phone with a different form factor and an S Pen. It has the same screen technology as the S22U, as well as 5G SA. The S21 Ultra is actually easier to hold being narrower, but the weight of the S22 Ultra is more evenly distributed. The S21 Ultra retains the strong vibrate motor from the Note20 Ultra. If you have an S21 Ultra, the upgrade to the S22 Ultra is NOT worth it unless you absolutely need an S Pen or prefer the larger screen area (19.3:9 has greater area than 20:9).
With each upgrade, there is less feel of something new and exciting. Even the software is nearly identical on all Samsung devices now. Dropping from 16 GB RAM to 12 GB was another odd choice. Maybe we've hit a plateau where there is nothing new to offer, or that hardware and software designers have gotten lazier. The best innovations on the software side seem to come from independent developers who have a passion for their phones. If you're coming from any non-Samsung, the S22 Ultra is a great choice, but from a recent Samsung flagship, you may be underwhelmed.
Am I the only one that thinks Samsungs decision to remove the camera surround bezels has made the unit look cheap? Looked more handsome with bezel like the S21U around the camera.
The S22U has better flare control (a function of the lense protector and maybe the lense) and somewhat better cams than the N10+.
The N10+'s display likely has a better color rendering index and white point though. Better efficiency because it's only 60hz. The N10+'s 12gb of ram chews the S22U up once the app load starts getting high. Even with a light load the S22U is only marginally faster.
The N10+ has up to 1tb of expandable storage that can be used as a data drive. Even though it memory is less efficient and has less battery capacity it gets 8-11 hrs SOT once optimized and uses >[email protected] with tap on AOD, internet/phone active.
Firmware, you can still buy a new N10+ running on Android 10. Android 11 is so-so and 12 is a boned mess of a fubar.
I have one N10+ running Pie, the other 10. Both will remain as such for their whole service lives because they run great and fullfill their mission.
Thus far security hasn't been an issue at all. Pie is reasonably secure as is in actual usage.
Both Android and Samsung have dropped the ball for 3 years running. Hard to believe the Beast is still a viable and desirable option after all this time but it is.

I actually think the S22 Ultra looks great. It gives cases with the precise cutouts a great look.
Excellent unbiased review of the S22U. It's a very good phone despite what a small group of Note 10 users with no first hand experience think of it.
My last phone was iPhone 11 and the previous one was a Xiaomi Mix 2s, so the S22 Ultra feels very premium and a big upgrade. I was bored with what is happening on the iOS side, so I decided to switch back to android and the S22 Ultra is a great all-in-one package, especially with the 4 years update.
I'm coming from S20+ 5G. I'm really disappointed about the battery life which it's still a shame, random overheating it's still present, unfortunately, the only improvement it's the camera department and S-Pen, otherwise, it's the same phone...
I came from an S20+ too. Only upgraded because I got a great deal. Already knew this was not going to be a huge upgrade from the S20+, but I am enjoying just as much. I have one for me and one for the wife and both have been flawless. No issues at all. Battery lasts more than long enough for our use. Hope the new software update does not mess with anything and just makes it better.

Best comment ever.. dude's like: oh well I have 2 note 10+ and even if this is a S22 Ultra forum I'm gonna brag about how great my N10+ with the Spen on the right as god intended it to be is. He does have some good comments and suggestions when he's not trying to shove his 2 note 10s in every thread of the forum.

I'm almost 2 months with the S22 Ultra, I just changed the firmware to XAA U1 (it was TMB U) and it feels lighter and more fluid. I still haven't updated to the latest firmware (I switched last night so there was no update). Will try to get it and test it out. Coming from N20U, S21U, Iphone13ProM, I'm perfectly happy with the S22U, I have no regret (well maybe not getting the 1TB version), but I think this is an amazing device
Unfortunately in my country there are no trade-in deals, so yeah, I was forced to sell my S20+ for 350$ to purchase this S22 Ultra for 1200$
I actually made money on my deal. I purchased my S20+ when I was with Verizon on a Buy One Get One Free deal. I moved to T-Mobile and got $1000 each for the 2 S20+ phones I had in trade, so each S22 Ultra cost me $200 and I made a $1000 on the deal. Really could not pass that up even though I was happy with my S20+. Transferring the phone data went flawlessly on both phones and I have had no issues with the new phone. Better yet, the wife is happy.
I don't mean this to be as incendiary as the title might suggest, but I bought a S22U last week and was shocked by just how starkly different my experience with it was compared to all of the reviews.
Like the screen and camera are nice, sure, and it charges relatively fast...but the UI is slow and stuttery. Even when it's technically not stuttering, it still feels way more jerky and abrupt than phones like the Pixel, OnePlus, and the iPhone.
The battery life has also not been good at all. It's far worse than the S21U, and accubattery is saying I should only get 6.5 hours of SOT vs. the Pixel's 7 hours (for the Pro) and 7.5 hours (for the standard 6). If I recall, accubattery clocked the S21U at like 8 or 9 hours.
Has anyone else had a similar experience with this phone?

Battery life could be better, but if your UI is slow and stuttery it usually means some background task is running at high priority constantly. That would also explain your terrible battery life.

Oh trust me, I checked all of that, and set practically everything to not run in the background.
I've also had the S21U before and didn't have that issue (despite not even bothering to change the background allowances).
Something else that's really strange to me;
I bought a Tab S8 too. Same processor, same RAM as the Ultra, and I've had no issues with the UI. It's great. Completely fluid and smooth.

Battery life is nothing to write home about...but for my uses it lasts me a the whole day not a problem...but not much more than that. As for the slowness, jerkiness and stuttering, I do not experience that and I have mine set to wqhd+ mode. Performance is one thing I have been very happy with (I have the 12GB/512GB version).
I think it's a masterful device. No issues at all on my end.

Call the S22 Ultra bad, disappointing or whatever adjectives fit. Bottom line it has more reported defects than any Samsung device in many years. If you're happy good for you but as we can see many users aren't thrilled with the performance of this very expensive device. It is what it is.

While I tend to agree, do you have any sources for that tidbit? So I can use it in the future
S21 Ultra has come a long way in terms of updates/bug fixes and I strongly feel S22 Ultra needs major updates to be on par with S21 Ultra as far as as UI/smoothness is concerned.
Unless both S21U and S22U are used side by side(with latest firmwares installed), probably one will not be able to feel the difference and might end up saying "no UI/lag issues with S22 Ultra".
As for batterylife, I did several tests using same mobile operators, on same location, over same Wi-Fi network - on similar settings+usage pattern(mostly) and the batterylife of S22 Ultra(Snapdragon) turned out to be way less than S21 Ultra(Exynos). Going further, I did factory reset both, waited for over a week to settle down and ended up having the same experience.
The overall experience with 22U isn't the best yet considering its potential and I hope to see a lot of these issues getting fixed through future updates.
I have had no issues with lag or stutter. I suspect that you may have a defective device perhaps?

The s21u (Exynos) wasn't great when I first got it after release. It really improved with the big update it got last August which was supposed to be OneUI 3.1 but wasn't actually called that. I'm hoping the S22u gets a similar update this year. The April update improved the S22u (Exynos) for me but I think it still has a way to go before is can really be called "flagship".
S22 Ultra EXYNOS 512/12GB is the worst Samsung's flagship what I owned and I almost had all of them from S series before.
So poor UI and lagging performance I really starting to hate it. Battery performance I have to charge twice during working day! I'm not a mobile gamer at all. Hopefully Samsung will finally fix it with May update as already delayed as too many problems overall with crappy Exynos this year. On top of it 45W charging it is a joke

For better experience i suggest change animation length from x1 for 0,5 in developer option. I do it in every samsung device and i feel a lot of better running UI than before.
But i agree with above users that S22U still need updates for better running.
Comparing side by side my Fold 2 (yes android 11 is the best opton for fold, most stable and fast) to S22U.
Fold 2 with snapdragon 865+ is noticeably faster in opening for example default apps like phone dialer, messages, web browser etc and scrolling same webs fold 2 is smoother than S22U.
At this moment in my opinion S22U is only little better in day performance from Note 20U Exynos but skipping battery life which is a lot of better than Note.
But overall i like my S22U like previous Note series except Note 20 U
as _grizzly_ stated, ive not had animations turned on since they were first implemented back in gb days, not only does it save battery it makes the ui faster, we dont need it to look fancy switching between screens, we need it to do it quickly, that wont be a fix to all your issues but all journeys start with a single step
I'm fully updated. No issues at all. It does everything it's supposed to do. Battery life is sh1te though / no getting round that point! But it's really no worse than any other leading Samsung device I've had in the past few years. They all drop at about 10% per hour.
I have the absolutely worst version of the S22U I guess. 8/128gb, Exynos.
No issues whatsoever. Fast, smooth, good battery. No lag or crashes for the two weeks I've had it.
So FWIW I have no complaints.
Camera setup is mindblowingly good for a phone, quite frankly ridiculously good.
The only minor minus would be the lack of proper native 960fps slomo (very niche thing anyway) but that's about it. S22U does some AI interpolation stuff there, and that's okay with me I guess. I'd rather have a better overall sensor there than one tailored for Tiktokers.
I've upgraded from an 8GB/512GB Exynos Note9 to a Snapdragon 12GB/512GB S22Ultra (S9080) and I couldn't be happier. Battery life is quite frankly amazing. The UI is buttery smooth. I don't like the in-display fingerprint sensor as much as the rear one from the Note9 and the form factor is a fair bit bulkier, but on the whole I'm personally very happy. Maybe I've just been very lucky.

Looking to purchase 7 Pro had samsung , oneplus , xioami . At moment im on s21 Ultra which i have had since release don't know whether wait for 23 ultra or pick up 7 Pro. main thing for me is battery life . on my s21 ultra i would get day and half with 6hrs s.o.t .
I'd say wait for the s23.
As much as I *hate* Samsung, the S23 Ultra will almost surely have better battery life.
I don't understand all the battery hate. I make it through the day easily with usually 50% left. It's all user dependent I guess or there's a shatload of bad batteries floating around. Just switch off the majority of not needed Google wizardry and don't game non stop and your good to go.
I'd say I love Samsung hardware but I'm not huge fan of OneUI. If Samsung release ever like Google Play edition of Galaxy S22 Ultra, Note design then it will be best device for long term.

The battery hate is because there are so many devices that do so much better. Also sometimes the phone just decides to start using way more battery than previous trends doing the same things it was doing before.
Sure but it's a mixed bag with different experiences per user. My psp7 runs about 50% longer than my Note 20 ultra with the same kind of usage.
P7P stock kernel doesn't seem to be very good in delivering/managing power usage. Sometimes the device heat up simply because i run YT Music. But some other days, it survives hours of screen time morning to night. I always check what run on BG when the device heat up, and it's nothing, really, it just that the device decide to run on higher freq for no good reason.
If you bought this phone, one thing you might want to do is using custom Kernel. I didn't do so because apparently i gonna need to wipe my phone to do first kernel flash. Which is a big turn off.
If you dont feel comfy about flashing and elses, i'd say, wait for S23 or Xiaomi 13 Pro

This is a fact! With the stock Kernel, I was using CPU Mintor daily to check my temps which typically ran above 30 C. Usually in the mid-30's. Over 40 when charging.
With the Kirasakura I usually run about 26-28 C.

I wouldn't bet on it , personally. My P7P has considerably better battery life than my brothers S22 Ultra (UK Exynos model). It also has better battery life than my old S21 Ultra had, and the S21 Ultra is known to have better battery life than the S22 Ultra.
Unless the upcoming S23 Ultra brings something new to the table to improve the battery life over the previous two generations, I can see it being about the same.
The question for me shouldn't be about battery life, which overall on most flagships now is relatively similar, rather how happy are you with Sumsung's UI and how important an S-Pen is, which will certainly be included again. Camera will be a little better than the P7P (especially with zoom). I've already gone on record that the P7P isn't worth an upgrade from the S21 Ultra and if mine hadn't been broken and unrepairable I would still have it.
Stick with the S21 Ultra would be my advice and see if the S23 Ultra bring something new. Unless you want Android in its vanilla form, in which case the P7P is definitely worth a look, especially given its about 25% cheaper than a Samsung flagship.

Stay away from it for now!I just purchased one myself,and sent it back because it overheats like crazy!Don't get me wrong,the performance is there but that face burning battery was enough for me...lol

Well the S23 Ultra is using Snapdragon chips worldwide and the TSMC-produced 8 Gen 2 is looking like an efficiency beast. I hear you on the Samsung UI and I'm also not too excited to lose root but the S23 Ultra could be a great device to jump to if people are tired of being tied to the charger with the Pixel (both due to the slow charging speed and the poor battery endurance on mobile data, particularly 5G). Samsung also always saves the best displays for themselves.
I have a S22 plus and just got the Pixel 7 Pro on sale.
Obviously the Ultra is a lot different than the plus. I have no need for a spen on a phone. I am not a fan of curved screens either but I took a gamble because of the sale price and I really like vanilla android.
The text to speech is pretty amazing. The screen is also nicer than the S22 plus stuck at 1080p.
Battery life right out the box and installing and updating and syncing seems pretty good so far. Definitely better than my S22 plus.
I think the big difference is cost. The Ultra even with a recent trade in is almost as expensive as this device is on sale with no trade. That is a pretty significant factor to me.
The s23 Ultra will be a better phone no doubt. Samsung has the hardware on lock and the new 8 gen 2 even on Samsung fab should be a pretty significant upgrade.
However Google works magic with Pixel phones and slower processors so I don't think there will be a big difference in day to day use.
It really depends what you prioritize and like best. If you like OneUI and the absolute best hardware then hands down get the Samsung. Samsung Galaxy devices are some of the best and if the S22 plus had quad hd I might say get that instead but with the better screen and bigger battery the Ultra is best.
However if you like Google services, great AI features, decent camera, fast updates and good battery life and cost is a factor then the Pixel is a really great choice.
Having used both the S21 Ultra and Pixel 7 Pro, the S21 Ultra has both better battery life and performance overall. The only reasons to switch would be for the cleaner software experience, better camera, and slightly smaller size. I agree, wait for the S23 Ultra.

Having used both the S21 Ultra and Pixel 7 Pro, the S21 Ultra has both better battery life and performance overall. The only reasons to switch would be for the cleaner software experience, better camera, and slightly smaller size. I agree, wait for the S23 Ultra.

Is that S21 Ultra on Exynos or Snapdragon? For me in the UK on Exynos, the S21 Ultra absolutely did not have superior battery life to what I get on the P7P. And various reports I saw at the time said that, whilst the Snapdragon S21 Ultra was the better phone for performance, for battery life the Exynos was better. Although I can't confirm as I never had the SD variant.
The Snapdragon S21 Ultra perhaps has the best battery life of any mainstream Android device, closely followed by the S22 Ultra then the Pixel 7 Pro. It could be that the S22 Ultra being on Verizon and the S21 Ultra being on T-Mobile played a role. The 7 Pro is a good improvement over the 6 Pro battery wise.

I don't have any issues with overheating, never have.
Just look for your best deal between Samsung or your carrier with trade-ins.

First week with this phone.
I don't have any kind of overheating.
On the other hand, battery is sort of dissapointing, it lasts the same as my older phones (mi 10, mi 9, honor 8, nexus 5). Around 6 hours of SOT give or take. And the charging is slower than mi 10/9.

Does that mean other than that everything is fine? I hesitate between honor magic4 pro and realme gt 2 pro because I like samsung but I don't really know

Wait for the S23u with 8gen2, the 8gen1 and exy2200 are both inefficient.
I've got around 7 of these phones and out of them 3 had severe lag.
128gb seems to be the worst, higher memory seem to perform better.
Unless you are getting a bargain I'd wait for s23 ultra

Why? S23 is around the corner. From the leaks it will be much better in power efficiency, specially if you are in EU and stuck with the Exynos chip which i think sucks. I read Snapdragon takes better images and is more efficient (even if i read they get overheated also)....but much of that is fixed in the S23 that uses a updated gen2 chip.
S22U is a great phone but i'm dissapointed with battery and image quality still.
Compared to my iPhone images are a hit and miss. Sometimes they are awesome but sometimes they are grainy or colors are off or just blurry.
And as said battery drain is pretty bad. Like overnight dropping 7-8% compared to 2-3% on iphone.
Same when i use it, i can literally see the battery go down...
1. Notification bar is looking like it is a theme made 10 years ago.
2. Lagging and stutters is very possible, depends on unit to unit.
3. Phone does overheat if you planning to use an app that is a heavy resources consuption or badly optimized.
4. Samsung's devices are overfilled with bloat-ware.
5. Battery efficiency is pretty bad.
6. A lot of S22U were sent back for a replacement due to multiple hardware issues, for example mine is restarting by it self when a phone call starts (not every time) but at least few times a month.
7. Edges are not usefull at all but rather annoying.
8. Stylus has terrible grip, very uncountable to hold.
9. Speaker is terrible too, if you planning to listen to a music at full volume, stop.
10. It has very annoying notifications that are not important at all and unable to deactivate, for example (Messenger is using your mobile data).
11. Fingerprint scanner is ok but could be better, sometimes I have to touch it 3 - 5 times to get it registered (depends on angle).
I've been struggling with stutters, lags as well as audio stutters for several months until a big update came up. Scrolling through UI was extremly jerky.
Personally I would never buy a samsung's device ever again but that is just me and I understand other may be completely satisfied.
For older devices Samsung is releasing updates that are slowing the devices down so people have to buy newer products regularly. For me this is just unacceptable. This is a verified info that you can search for too.

I think it's an SOC issue on the s22u both the 8gen1 and Exy2200 are fabbed by Samsung foundries and are poor(Samsung foundries 4nm node was awful with low yields). The zfold4 with TSMC 8+Gen1 is one of the smoothest and fastest phones I've used recently, even much better than the Pixel. I don't think the issue is OneUI. I expect the S23u with the TSMC 8gen2 will be blazing fast and buttery smooth.
Might not be relevant to you, but I by now *regrett* buying the Samsung S22 Ultra.
The reason being that (depending on where you buy your phone) the firmware for your region will disable a lot of features. E.g. for me it is impossible to somehow activate the eSIM support.
And I really tried all the tweaks that are out there.
But you only notice these things after you've purchased the phone, because nothing about this is written in the manuals.
So my advice: Stay away from Samung phones.
Honestly, the s22 Ultra was a trash offering, regardless of the chipset, of course Exynos is worse. I'm trading it in for the s23 Ultra (I'm stuck with Samsung due to the purchase of a Samsung watch) and hopefully it won't be disappointing this time around. But to what I said earlier do be careful of what wearables you buy and from what brand, Samsung has great wearables, but half the features and functions usually get limited to their phones/devices. Unfortunately I didn't realise this when I bought my Galaxy Watch 4, and so now I'm stuck for at least a few years till I swap out the wearable and then the phone brand itself, probably back to Xiaomi.
I have the S22 Ultra snapdragon, great phone but some minor annoyances
. Battery it's not poor but could be better for 5000mah
. Speakers could be a bit louder
. And camera is rubbish at capturing moving subjects it always comes out blurry
I am in the same bought boat as you and bit the bullet and bought the s22 ultra 256GB. It's been 3 days since I bought it and honestly I am really satisfied. I had the z fold4 before but I found it impractical, the s22 ultra has almost the same level of performance with no noticeable downgrade. I have the snapdragon variant and it does not overheat. Battery life is OK, but it's too early to judge as it is still learning my usage patterns.
Overall I recommend buying the s22 ultra even though s23 ultra is right around the corner. Yes, it will have an effecient CPU, but I do not expect much from a single generation leap. A real upgrade would be s24 ultra as it is expected that the entire design will change
Don't plan on upgrading my S22U to the S23U. However if I were in the market for a new phone I'd wait another month and get the S23U. No brainer IMHO.

Battery life...I can't complain but then I don't have any of the social media apps on my phone which seems to be using a lot of battery.
We have little to no bloatware on the EU versions and even then this is a one time solution, delete the bloatware.
At the end of the day its ONLY a phone. There are far more important things in life than this.

Yes, year to year I read about unveiled best and a lot of better from year old flagship.
And after few months opinion/ reviews about disadvantages and even features which previous model had better. For example low durability frame S22 series, worse speaker quality compare to S20 series.

Actually yeah, it will solve a lot, the performance will actually be worth the price tag itself, which as a heavy user I actually do need, it'll solve a lot of battery drain thanks to not being an absolute power munching ****show chipset like the current exynos, oh and I'll actually be able to get decent and stable fps with graphics maxed without the phone turning into an oven. Now lets not forget other things like photography and other stuff like that s22 ultra was a flop either way, but exynos took the cherry on the top.
