How to install TWRP on Huawei Honor 8 FRD-L14? - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

I have tried rooting my FRD-L14 yesterday. I have successfully unlocked the bootloader, OEM, FRP, and developer mode on the phone to install TWRP. I have also installed ADB (with corresponding drivers like fastboot like the usual). I have inputted the usual flashing command through fastboot:
.\fastboot.exe flash recovery .\twrp-{version_name}-frd.img
However, after trying to flash both TWRP versions 3.6.2 & 3.0.2-0 (as shown in a video guide to install TWRP on FRD), I am always stuck on the "Your device is booting now..." screen when entering recovery mode either through ADB or [power] + [Vol Down] buttons. I have to always press down [power] + [Vol Up] buttons in order to do a regular boot. I have already spent countless hours trying to look for a solution to install TWRP rather than giving up.
Some of the websites that I have browsed through seems to have a custom TWRP that is fit for FRD-L14 but unfortunately, the download links seem to have expired already.
XDA Developer Link with no solutions on continuing to install TWRP
Expired Custom TWRP Link Page
Link where I get my official TWRP downloads
My phone is a FRD-L14C567B402 (USA only) running on Android 7.0 Nougat with Hisilicon Kirin 950 processers and EMUI version 5.0.4....
Current Plans:
I am planning to download every single TWRP version on the Official TWRP website for FRD and try every single one of them... If this fails, I am not sure how to successfully install TWRP
Any other suggestions or solutions to solving this problem? Thanks in advance!

Honor 6 - Unable to access recovery mode. Stuck at boot screen (honor logo)

Hi,
My Honor 6 (Indian Version) was stuck in boot loop post OTA upgrade from B822 to B831. In order to fix this issue, I went through many forums available online and then decided to use the Multi Tool to downgrade to Android L & EMUI 3.1.
To get this done I have followed the below steps:
1. Unlock bootloader
2. Extract BOOT, CUST, RECOVERY and SYSTEM files from the update package downloaded from Honor.in site. //(Honor 6_Firmware_H60-L04_Android 5.1.1_EMUI 3.1_C675B570_India_Flipkart)//
3. Used Multi Tool to unbrick.
Post this the phone is not able to get into recovery mode; it's stuck at the logo screen. It doesnot recognise the 3 button command to boot into recovery mode.
I have tried using the 'boot to recovery' command in Multi Tool but it throws error "daemon not running starting on port 5037".
I have also tried adb command but for some reason my computer does not recognise my mobile.
i.e. adb devices --> doesnot show my device. (yes, I have updated the abb drivers). So I am not able to use any adb commands.
Then i tried installing/flashing CWM & TWRP recovery. None helped. :crying:
Now I am here, out of options and do not know how to proceed.
Could someone in this forum help me fix the current issue? Please.
In addition, I would like to know a few things:
a. How to install a new OS/ROM on a dead phone? (Healthy hardware with corrupt software)
b. How to format any phone and start a fresh installation?
c. How to read internal memory of a phone which has no ROM or corrupt software?
I am new to all this. Please bear with me.
Thanks,
Sampath

First of all hold and press power + vol down to boot into bootloader mode and type
Fastboot devices
After connecting your phone to PC and opening a command window in platform-tools. Your device should be listed.
adb devices works only when your phone is already booted into Android or running twrp.
Copy and paste the four image files to platform-tools folder and fire these commands
Fastboot flash boot boot.img
Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Fastboot flash system system.img
Fastboot flash cust cust.img
And then use the 3 button command.

I am in a bit different situation, let me explain.
Till day before yesterday I was on B570 Rom, then I upgraded over OTA to B831, then Unlocked Bootloader, Rooted, Installed Latest TWRP Recovery & Installed Latest Xposed Framework, everything went successfull & My phone is running fine.
But the question that arises to me is that none of the Stock Marshmallow update for Honor 6 - H60-L04 has been stable as compared to Lollipop Version & I found B570 super stable & the possibility of myself reverting back to B570 is more. What would be the procedure to revert back to B570.. I think first of all I would have to revert back to stock recovery & then flash the rom package, but how to do this successfully.
Kindly advice.

Thank you for your response. :good:
I have flashed all the files using the fastboot mode, but my phone does not recognise the 3 button command.
It either displays the Honor logo or restarts with a quick vibration. the only command it recognised is 'Vol Down + USB plugged into a computer' (for fastboot).
When flashed with Honor Custom or CWM recovery the phone does not recognise:
1. Vol up + Vol down + Power - for recovery mode
2. Vol down + Power - for hard reset/clear cache partition
When flashed with TWRP recovery the phone only recognises: Power + Vol Up button which boots into recovery mode; however this works only when connected to a power source, the moment I disconnect the power cable the phone switches off.
I tried to install Honor 6 custom ROM EMUI4.0 using TWRP. Need guidance on the below two scenarios.
1. TWRP only recognises .zip files. HONOR custom ROMs are in .app format. What should I do?
2. As a work around, I have downloaded 'Honor 6_Firmware_H60-L04_Andriod 6.0_EMUI 4.0_C432B820_Channel-Others.zip' from xda forum and tried installing it, but TWRP throws a 'no md5 file found' error.
To address this I tried using WinMD5.exe to get the MD5 code and manually created a .MD5 file, but TWRP did not recognise it. Please guide.
Thanks,
Sampath

You need to flash stock recovery first, by executing this command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
@sampathnayak09
Make sure your power button is working correctly. If the files can be flashed successfully, you should be able to boot into recovery.
Honor firmware can only be flashed using three button method. You can search online for making .zip from .app but I am not sure that will solve your problem.

There are rollback packages for going back. I have read those threads on XDA but could not find them again. Will look for them and will send you a link as soon as I found one.

Thanks for the reply.
If I extract the recovery.img from the B831 Rom Package & flash the same using the below command will it give me back my stock recovery.
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
And if once I am on Stock Recovery I hope I can again Install a full fresh copy of the B831 Package which will be with Stock Recovery i.e NO TWRP Recovery & root free. And after that when I get the rollback package I can revert back to B570. Pls advice am I going right or is there any possibility that I will brick my phone.

My honor 6 bricked about a month ago so can not verify this method but to get out of bootloop, always keep a nandroid backup of your device somewhere safe.
You can make a nandroid backup using twrp. Save it to SD card and then copy it to your PC to keep it safe.

Hi,
I did flash the stock recovery, but my phone keeps rebooting and doesn't get into recovery mode.
I am sure it has sufficient battery charge. (Close to 90%).
Is there a way to do a clean install on Android phones? Like the way we install Windows OS on computers. Format hard disks, create partitions and then install a fresh OS?
Thanks

Find attached below the required links for Rollback package & TWRP.
1) https://club.hihonor.com/in/honor6.217/downgrade-link-from-marshmallow-b831-to-lollipop-b570.7935
2) https://twrp.me/devices/huaweihonor6.html
Regarding TWRP, it lets you install custom roms & other apps which cannot be installed thru stock recovery e.g Xposed Framework. Further TWRP is useful for restoring the phone as it allows to restore the phone by using Nandroid backups taken earlier, provided the Nandroid backups are stored in SD Card. There may be more advantages which I am still trying to find out.

Give it a couple of tries. Users have suggested that it usually gets stuck somewhere but trying for 2,3 times gets the job done.

Let me know which Rom version is your phone running now & which version you are trying to migrate to.
Also if 3 button Force update is not working then you can try the project menu option.
But first let me know what state your phone is currently in.

Boot into recovery from fastboot?

Hello, I have an Honor 6x, with unlocked bootloader, and wanted to install TWRP so I booted into bootloader
and flashed twrp.img via fastboot, but now everytime I want to boot TWRP it just shows the message:
Your device has been unlocked and
can't be trusted.
To learn more, visit:
*some link I can't post cause I'm new here*
Your device is booting now...
and then it is stuck in this state...
could I eventually boot into TWRP directly from bootloader via fastboot?
Please help guys, thanks in advance. :fingers-crossed:
What version of EMUI are you on? If you're on the 7.0 beta there isn't a working twrp for it.

Hello. Replying here as I don't need a new thread for a very similar issue.
Brand new 6x with EMUI 4. Unlocked bootloader successfully. Using adb/fastboot tool I boot into bootloader, then flash my twrp img. For some reason this goes fine with no errors but takes less than two seconds (cause for concern?).
Now from this point is where I am having trouble. Regardless of what I do, the phone only boots into the EMUI recovery screen. I am aware of holding the volume up key on the first boot after flashing twrp so that it won't be overwritten. I have rebooted the phone manually and also through fastboot while holding the volume up button.
In a new city and only internet I have is thru my phone so this process is really slow due to all the restarts etc. Thanks in advance for the help!

Same problem here. After that I get always the same message after reboot or if I try to enter the recovery mode.

Hi there,
I have found it. To get the TWRP Screen I had to press all 3 Buttons (Volume Up, Volume Down and Power) at startup.
Hope this helps.
Sadly this doesn't work here, on a BLN-L21C432B130 with EMUI 4.x and Android 6.x
3 Button start method brings up always the EMUI recovery screen.
Power Button + Volume up Button works fine here with all TWRP versions up to 3.1.0-0, but never on a newer one.
Additional hint: It works only if the USB cable isn't plug into the device and if the phone was powered down before. That must me the reason why I never get that up, if I'm rebootin using the command $ fastboot reboot cause for this the cable connection has to be used
@all who stuck in bootscreen...flash THIS TWRP...
[LG G4 H815] Just need to reboot into recovery directly...
I have kinda the same problem: I flashed TWRP and a friend of mine told me that I need to reboot into recovery directly after flashing TWRP because otherwise the system replaces TWRP again when I type "fastboot reboot". The problem is I cant shutdown the phone and also the key combination of the LG G4 is not rlly working, I tried it dozens of times on my other one... Is there ANY other way of booting to recovery from bootloader / fastboot? Thanks in advance!
P.S.: I read something about "boot twrp.img"... Is that an option or does it just also flash TWRP?

Honor 6x (BLN-L24) Twrp overwritten by Default Bootloader

I have a Honor 6x (BLN-L24) with EMUI 5+, Android Nougat, all updated. It is the U.S. edition. I unlocked the Bootloader, installed ADB / Fastboot tools and can flash the correct TWRP recovery image (3.1.1-0-berlin.img) but everytime I try to reboot into recovery, the standard EMUI recover overwrites TWRP and I just end up in the EMUI recovery.
I've looked at every forum I can find, articles, etc... but can't wrap my head around this one. If anyone with a similar experience and/or with a solution could help, I'd be most grateful.
Thank you!
I agree with with Rommco05. He IS correct, as I wondered the same thing till I realized to try unplugging it. Also make sure its the Power AND up buttons at same time. If you happen to hold only the up button it will take you to the erecovery feature where it trys hooking to WiFi for updates , which wont help you either.
Still doesn't work
Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately, unplugging doesn't do it either with the key combination you suggested. The following article is helpful for key combinations but alas, it still won't load into TWRP.
It is really strange as I can't even get past "Your device has been unlocked and can't be trusted" screen now. It just stays there...
Super frustrating. I didn't know if it had anything to do with my model being the BLN-L24 US version. I bought it at BestBuy unlocked.
Also, when I try to download "Latest Version and Recovery" from "Huawei eRecovery", I'm getting "Getting package info failed". I
Try OpenKirin twrp from recoveries section here on 6X forums

That's not the cause. My phone is also a BLN-L24 purchased from Best Buy and I have no issues using TWRP. What did you do after you install TWRP? Did you let the phone just reboot or did you try to go into TWRP before rebooting?
This is straight from TWRP website:
"Note many devices will replace your custom recovery automatically during first boot. To prevent this, use Google to find the proper key combo to enter recovery. After typing fastboot reboot, hold the key combo and boot to TWRP. Once TWRP is booted, TWRP will patch the stock ROM to prevent the stock ROM from replacing TWRP. If you don't follow this step, you will have to repeat the install."
Key combination timing?

This is helpful, thank you. I found a page "Key Combinations Clarified for Honor 6x" which has a number of key combinations but nothing is helpful in my case that I know of. Do I use these key combinations imediately after the flash?
Is there a specific tutorial or guide that was helpful for you? I'd be grateful for any further assistance.
Thanks.

That is the problem, I'm unable to enter TWRP after flashing it, unplugging the usb cable, holding power/volume up...
Finally got Twrp installed. Rooted and installed custom Rom (lineageos) but when I reboot after flash screen, it's just blank...
If I were you, I would go completely back to stock and start over. Once you fastboot flash TWRP, it is imperative that you reboot back into TWRP before booting into the OS. Also, bootloaders don't overwrite recoveries. They are separate partitions, so your title is a bit misleading.
Regardless, you must still have stock recovery on your device since it is "defaulting" to that instead of TWRP. Like I said, it is extremely important to boot into recovery after you first flash it.
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
let it do it's thing.
fastboot reboot recovery OR you can do it manually in TWRP right after the flash.
Have you tried rebooting to recovery from the system?
Connect your device to your computer, enable USB Debugging, and run
Code:
adb reboot recovery
from Windows CMD or Linux Shell, or any other one you prefer.
If this works, then you are doing the recovery key combination wrong.
Cheers
I'm having the same issue as OP. I have a BLN-L24 from Best Buy in the US. Reverted to emui 4.1 and android 6, unlocked bootloader, flashed twrp-3.2.1-0-berlin.img, and it keeps booting into huawei erecovery.
I didn't get any info on what the OP actually did to get twrp installed.
FWIW, there is no "fastboot reboot recovery"
FWIW2, you can't turn off the honor 6x from the bootloader. the best you can do is a hard reboot.

I'm having your exact same problem. I can get into fastboot mode, flash TWRP berlin, but I cannot enter TWRP after flash. It just goes back to the normal warning screen "this phone is unlocked", boot normally or go to EMUI recovery.
What worked for you?

RedSkull fixed my problem!

strange... brick? (SOLVED)

Hello friends
I have a problem, to see if you can help me
I was installing a custom rom, and when I tried to install the twrp, I did not get it
ADB apparently performs the process well, but when trying to enter twrp, it enters the recovery stock
the problem is that I do not have an operating system or access to twrp, so I do not know how to recover the phone
by not having access to twrp, it does not help me HWOta or Huru Updater ...
I have access to bootloader and to the recoveries of huawei
before the disaster was in oreo
The bootloader is unlocked
any ideas?
You want to flash TWRP correct? Well first I want you to confirm me following things.
What recovery are you using. You need an Oreo Compatible TWRP. Try the one in Elemental ROM thread in Honor 6X Roms.
What command are you using. This is the most common mistake people make. Just a reminder the command to flash TWRP recovery on EMUI 8 is :-
fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk RECOVERY-V2.img
RECOVERY-V2.img is the name of TWRP you will download from above-mentioned thread.
Now if you are doing all of the above, and still no success, tell me what the Command Prompt says when you try to flash. After you flash try to manually boot into TWRP by holding Volume Up and Power. Luck.

thanks for your reply
Yes, I know the commands, and it's even the same recovery, from KingOfMezi
as I comment, he performs the process well:
PS C: \ adb>. \ Fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk RECOVERY-V2.img
Sending 'recovery_ramdisk' (9100 KB)............................................. OKAY [0.328s]
Writing 'recovery_ramdisk'........................................................................ OKAY [0.125s]
Finished. Total time: 0.516s
PS C: \ adb>
but when starting the phone with power + vol+ (releasing power when vibrating and without releasing it, I tried both ways) starts the recovery stock
the most curious thing is that I had done it more times, and I never had any problem with that, in fact, the last thing I did was in the twrp
That's odd. Try to reboot after flashing TWRP. Once you flash it instead of manually booting into TWRP type
fastboot reboot
Now when the device shows device has been unlocked message press Volume up to enter erecovery. From there turn off phone and then boot into TWRP by holding Power and Volume Up. Keep holding it until you see your device is booting now... Screen.
Alternatively try to use dload to restore the system.
about dload I have a doubt.
Being debranded as l22 and having installed oreo, where do I get update.zip? of a ROM l22 oreo, or of the l21 that corresponds to my device?
Download L22 Oreo from Firmware Finder website or Windows App
solved use the bat of kingofmezi, Elementary Kernel + ramdisk.zip.
this made the recovery disappear (if you tried to access, a screen appeared similar to when we accessed fastboot, saying there is no recovery) and then flashed twrp correctly. thanks for your help
You are in Elemental v2. Do you mind if I ask for a review. Was it a complete flash or in complete. i.ewas the wallpaper when you first booted Blue&Black or Pink one.

unfortunately I could not prove it. when flashing the bat, I only managed to recover twrp, and then I was able to return to stock, I did not dare to try it again out of fear (I feel the delay, I could not enter before due to personal problems)

Help with erecovery

I "accidentally" flashed twrp into erecovery partition.then long story short i only have access to fastboot twrp from erecovery.which cannot do much mounting apparently.and ff is down or something couldnt download anything.so my device is kinda bricked.i had a dload firmware from oreo which isnt supported by current module. so please humble people of xda community with a mate 9 MHA-L09 take a backup of your erecovery image from pie and share.save meee.
Link to my copy of MHA-L29-9.1.0-252:
File on MEGA
mega.nz
IMO, it should not matter if yours was L09 but I don't know would it work if you had other Pie than 9.1.0-252
Once you un-arj, find update.zip, unzip and use Huawei Update Extractor (search for its thread on XDA) to extract eRecovery img
However, you can try the following:
- boot to TWRP you flashed to eRecovery (connect to USB charger and power up by keeping pressed Vol+)
- from TWRP, backup Recovery (supposing you didn't mess up Recovery, too)
- restore your Recovery backup to eRecovery
I.e., generally, Recovery and eRecovery images should be the same (at least, they were in Oreo)
But I don't know if you really only flashed TWRP to eRecovery - in that case you should still be able to boot to System, to Recovery or to your TWRP in eRecovery - if yours boots only to Fastboot, then it must be more seriously bricked
Otherwise, you can search for MHA-L09 at:
Search - AndroidHost.RU
Check multiple download links at the same time.
androidhost.ru
to find your 9.x firmware, to unpack and extract eRecovery img as described above.
Actually, most of the firmwares there should be Huawei official Service Repair versions - if so, they contain official Huawei Installation manual describing how to use them for DLOAD installation (to unbrick the phone)
Thanks i used dload method.ff by team mt is down i guess so it was really hard to find a 9.x based firmware.and also i messed up my recovery ramdisk by flashing magisk into it.noe um not sure if its worth all the hassle to root a Huawei device...
