Preserving Sony camera software - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I recently dusted off my Z5 and would like to make it my daily driver. I need help with the direction on which ROM to use. I want to get the security updates, but also want to preserve the original Sony camera processing software, so the photo taking quality stays the same as in stock. What would you suggest to try?

[Q] Honor 6 Plus - worthy update for OnePlus One?

Hi All
I haven’t found a specific forum for Honor 6 plus but I hope to find some answers to my questions here
Currently I have OnePlus One and I look at Honor 6 Plus for an upgrade.
The selling point for me is camera performance. I expect H6+ to have less noise and be general better all-rounder camera.
I know that the performance will be slightly worse than OPO and video quality will be worse as well (OPO has 4k recording and [email protected] and [email protected]).
But…
Can you help me if H6+ will be worthy upgrade for somebody into photography?
1. How it is behaving in general usage (shutters, hick ups, performance issues, software issues – battery drains etc…,)?
2. Lollipop update – forecast?
3. Overall phone quality – any issues with it? Bad pixels, light leaks on the screen, any bend-gates/antenna-gates, my-phone-tries-to-kill-me-gates?
4. How is the camera – photo quality, noise levels on dark photos, does it have any manual settings? Or if not in stock version are they accessible from 3rd party apps? (ie.on OPO using app “Camera FV-5” I have the access to manual ISO and exposure time settings, is this possible in H6+?)
5. 3D photos – since the H6+ has two cameras this technically should be possible – is it?
6. RAW shooting – any chances?
7. Can apps be fully installed on SD card? I have noticed that my Samsung tablet moves only small bits of the app to SD card while my previous Tegra tabled moved whole app there (both were on 4.4 KK) – how does it work on H6+?
8. File manager – since KitKat security restrictions crippled SD card functionality I understand that (without rooting) file managers cannot modify SD card unless they are built in the ROM and seen by the system as core app. Is there any built in file manager in H6+ able to create and delete files from SD card?
9. USB OTG – does H6+ supports USB OTG for USB drives/keyboards/mice? My typical scenario I take photos on my SLR, I transfer them to my phone SD card , I share them from my phone. Will it work for me using H6+?
10. Is it powerful enough to play demanding 3D games like KOTOR for example?
11. Buy now or wait for something on Kirin 935? Or for the price fall? Any fortune-tellers around?
Thank you all for your time and replies
Hi guys. I know there are few H6+ users here. Anybody willing to share their experience?

1. I think it's the best phone I've had since my first cell phone in mid-80's , no freezes etc. Long battery time, charge 2-3 times a week, but I' work at home and are out of the building a few times a week, or while on holiday. Don't use it for music, but Surveillance(Blue Iris) and IP-Cam viewer, booking app, and remote controlling my officePC.
2. Lollipop will arrive in July/August I think. Nothing I think is worth waiting for, have 5.0 on my Tab S, and there are some bugs...
3 Nothing, got the phone in February-15.
4. Camera is OK, HDR, Super night,Panorama etc. I have an M43 from Olympus, so it does not bother me.. ISO , WB, smile detect and touch for focus,GPS,and timer functions+ some watermarks and small adjustments can be made, no manual shutter/aperture. Seen an Oppo which looked better , at least on the screen..
5. No 3D in the Honor app
6. No RAW....
9. I have one Oly PM1 for underwater photos, I use a WD wireless disk with SD card reader on holiday, download to my Tab, share. My EM-10 is wireless, transfers JPG wireless to the phone, share. (I use PhotoMate on the TAB for editing RAW files, can then adjust WB etc.like LR.
11. Hmm, I love this phone, have a alu frame around it with plastic backcover(metal dampens the signals...). I like the camera function where you can adjust the aperture after the shot. I would maybe looked at the newest Honor or Huawei P7 because of an international version of ROM, but then I would miss this camera option!

I am looking at this phone, may I ask which country you are in, and if you are finding there is too much chinese and not enough English? And was it easy enough to get google play services and play store working on?
Thanks

Located in Norway. Downloaded Google Play/updated it with the English version.(The GPlay Icon is the same in Chinese), and the phone updated most apps by itself to English versions. I have chosen Norwegian as language, and almost all menus are in that language, else in English. Hivoice is in Chinese, so voice control does not work(or I have not tried, can't read chinese). HiCloud/cloud+ does not work, annoying, so I have manually set up backups to other drives. This also means you have to download Themes manually, but no big deal for me. There are a few Huawei Apps, forums, etc, all in Chinese. I think the access to Cloud+ and Hivoice is most annoying, as it reminds me to do backups I can't do because I'm denied access to the Cloud+.....
Besides that, after using it since February, I'm very pleased, it's my all time favourite phone since mid-80's , Owned most brands, Motorola,Philips, Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, HTC,Cubot(Apollo), and now Honor....... And, there will be a Lollipop update late summer for it...
kingroot will root the phone without unlocking the boot loader. then you can use rom toolbox to freeze/disable the stupid system apps. you can get the playstore from the huawei appstore, then kill the appstore. from the miui website you can get the google apps apk installer for google contacts sync. then just use a third party launcher and you have a fairly stock android experience with all of huawei honor6s great hardware
Bought today from Amazon UK, awesome phone. Been on it all day and still got 69% battery ( I'm a heavy user ) lots of media and live streaming playback etc. Phone came with virtually vanilla style setup ( all google apps installed ) very few bloatware so its been a dream start. Camera is good ( not as good as Sony z3 but holds its own. Performance is very snappy and I've not had any lag on anything and also feel no need to root as of yet as all is very good as it is.
Coming previously from a nexus 4 this phone is very good indeed.
Regards as always
I got one from amazon as well. Good thing is that all of bloatware can be uninstalled (not hidden) I managed to get rid of all of it with no problem.
On various reviews I read that it has no headphones in the box but mine come bundled with a pair - haven't tried its quality but they look rather basic with only one button. Also in the box I had two screen savers for front and rear. Still a puzzling thing is that somebody on the amazon claimed that he received his with touchplus screen protector!?!? I wish to have one but it is almost impossible to buy. How about you? Did you get one as well?
Nah same as you mate, headphones are basic yes so I use my own. I got the 32gb version. The apps I didn't want I could actually uninstall so thats a bonus for me I guess. This phones battery is WOW still going and got 35% watched fa cup, golf, boxing as well as faceache and twitter use........ Its running on Duracell lol.
Regards as always
Hi guys - if you are interested I have just posted my review of OPO vs H6+ on the main section of the forum:

Honor 6 plus on ebay
Those looking for this device can get the 32GB NFC international version in any of the 3 colours from the manufacturer and a few dealers on eBay. They will load language and radio bands to suit you needs. Must say do like the Gold version..So worth a look on eBay people.
Hi all.
Do you have "cloud problem" as well?
I have been testing my H6+ camera further and I have noticed that test stock camera delivers superb quality on low light shots but its struggle with clouds and end results is very grainy. Even well below 100% magnification you can see the noise. But on the other hand using third part app like my beloved FV-5 solves the problem and clouds looks much better even fully zoomed.
Therefore I believe that this is compression algorithm issue only within Honor camera app. My stock firmware is B141. What's yours?

Change camera settings past the options in the camera app

Hello,
Are there any apks that are capable of modding the camera? My phone is a G Flex 2 and it has a very capable camera + sensor, but its default (and unchangeable to my knowledge) setting is overexposed, sharp, and grainy. I don't believe there are any available firmware flashes to it at this point in time, either.
I'm looking for some software that will allow me to manually modify my camera's settings, but not just inside of one external app like L Camera. I want to be able to get more out of my camera in apps that access it automatically, too, like snapchat.
I tried googling for this, but the thing I'm looking for is ambiguous enough that I can't find any good definitive info on it; only firmware mods for Motorola or the G2.
Do any of you know of such an app?

Hello, and thank you for using XDA Assist!
I don't know of any, but I imagine your device experts would.
I am connecting you to the following forum:

Using MANUAL CAMERA and have bought the phone recently.. A week ago. Auto mode looks good but gonna have to test extensively in different conditions!

Still no DRM backup for XZP?

I'm to flash aosp 8.1 in order to use Google Camera HDR+, but it seems like there's still no complete TA or DRM backup for XZP
I googled for this, and there was one post that says to be DRM backup for XZP, but participants of that post say it's just a partial backup of TA partition, and not a complete backup.
Does anyone know if DRM backup for XZP released?
I know there's DRM patch for XZP, but not having to bypass DRM and get full backup of DRM might be way better.
im not sure there is but most likely not.
its not about better or worse, the patch works the same as restoring original backed up DRM. but then again if you want to relock/unroot you dont have the original DRM and you will not have a working camera, so in my opinion once rooted youre stuck...
but there are stock roms that have drm fixed and you will not notice any difference than official sony fw if you do its probably an advantage over the official fw as it is more optimized and smoother (thats why they made them XD)
another disappointment by sony....
having 120hz screen that we have no access to, neither perfectly working native 4k at all time, camera has potential that is not fully used in stock camera app.
all these features are there but we cant access them I dont know whats the point then, root could be the option to use such splendid features but then again, warranty is gone
so thanks to sony if we want to use the full potential of their creation we have to compromise to warranty and stock functionality.
only one type of people would create such features that are usless - money hungry advertisers who only care about money rather than customer's happiness
I mean if I ever create a device, I would never release it out there without its full potential functioning in the best way possible, like HTC. ( maybe HTC is not the best in some point of views of people but you get what they promise).

Pie Root

Hi,
i have read here in Forum about android pie and i cant find my answer for myself.
Is it possible to Flash rooted pie on xzp with restore the drm keys?
i know the camera is workin on pie's root, but what is with the other Issues?
Is there any Solution out there?
Best Regards

No, you can't do anything to resotre lost keys, not unless you made a backup of them first. You can fool the phone that the DRM is in place, but that's different to restoring them.
You can unlock you phone and put a custom rom on there, there are some Pie threads here on XDA, eXistenZ Pie, or LineageOS. But getting these to work isn't a simple download the rom and install it. You need to follow the instructions on the Sony unlock, then install TWRP, which will give you the ability to flash roms and recoverys.
It might be worth sticking to a stock rom and using janjan's kernel, wich will fix any DRM problems and give you compatability with Magisk
Yes, the camera does work on Pie, even with bootloader uinlocked, but there are some other features that remain disabled, but nothing important.
Thx for Reply. My Old XZP has unlocked Bootloader, Oreo Rooted within DRM Patch from XperiFix. But now, the Display is broken and the Phone is dead.
I have buy the Same Model (Locked & Fresh) and want to remove System Apps , have Root and eventually Pie. But i want to have all functions like unrooted and hoped that the time brings out new Methods for that.
I have read here, that the camera Quality gets down on pie root.
Now my Hope / Question:
Pie + Root within DRM Features (Fooled DRM is ok also) or should i Flash Oreo and use Xperi Fix again, like my old one?

Pie or Oreo is a personal choice and you'll get people batting for both sides on the forum here.
You can stick with what you know, or go with stock Pie and use janjan's kernel, that will get you Pie build with DRM fix.

Thx for Answer.
I have read the thread about the kernel and pie and i cant find Information for camera Quality (i have read pie root make camera Quality bad) and about the Screen-Modus (Superlebendig / Professional/ Standard). My old Oreo Rooted One was running perfect, but i would try pie, only if i can get sure, that cam and Display works like stock Rom.
I hope you understand my english and my wishes

The camera on the Sony works perfect or it doesn't (takes green pictures), it's a myth that there is some sort of half way 'poor' quality.
There is no degradation of camera quality with rooted Pie no DRM, if you think that might be a problem then use a 'fixed' rom or kernel.
Try Pie and if you think that the camera is broken, then go back to Oreo

@Sc0rp1on, @Didgesteve, in my opinion, it is totally worth to backup and restore locked TA to preserve drm keys, if just only in order to be on the safe side.
The unlock procedure erases all userdata anyway, similarly as when you do downgrade to exploitable oreo...
Anyway, I am not sure about the camera quality - is it really a myth? Please see here for few pictures comparisons where differences are visible. You may visit the linked posts too for more opinions / previous discussions.

I wouldn't advocate anyone unlock thier phone without backing up the TA partition. but I was replying to a question.
I can't see any difference in the pictures myself and I think if there were a difference more would have been said about it.
Myself I was an early jumper and unlocked my phone before backup and restore of the DRM keys was possible, so that rather shaped which version of firmware I use. I didn't step to Pie, I stuck with Oreo and a 'fix' that keeps everything sweet.
@Didgesteve, it's not easy to do a good comparison - only those who have two phones or at least have a locked _and_ unlocked TA backup of one phone could try. Although many complain about camera quality in general.
But as you could see in the linked "xz1c locked oreo vs unlocked pie comparison" post I tried to compare having two xz1 compact phones side by side, one still locked and one with lost drm keys.
And comparing the not downsized original photo images you can clearly see some differences - which are cut to attached pictures so you can find them easier in the original files available for download.
It could have been a coincidence, but it's have been done two times in a row switching the order of the phones getting very similar results of quality difference in each trial.
So in my opinion, it might be a myth or may not.

It may or may not, but no one else seems to have noticed.
If you think it makes a difference then use Janjan's kernel with built in 'fix'
@Didgesteve, that "no one else seems to have noticed" - a rather big assumption of yours. There are many users complaining about xzp/xz1/xz1c camera quality in general.
But just with regard to oreo vs pie, read the xzp thread from here: post#27, particularly post#30 contains very interesting internal stuff.
I would like to believe sony stopped conditioning camera with keeping bootloader locked with pie but somehow I am not sure about that at all considering all the circumstances and my linked camera quality comparison test.
Thanks for your advice, luckily I do not need janjan's kernels as I've implemented the TA backup exploit, so both my phones can have drm keys restored (in fact one of them is still locked on purpose).
I (and anybody who saved TA-unlocked.img together with TA-locked.img) can switch easily between "drm keys restored" and "drm keys lost" states for testing/comparisons.

I have 3 xz premiums running pie in my household. My wifes - never unlocked. Mine - unlocked with no ta backup. And a third one which I acquired cheaply recently - unlocked with restored original ta backup running a kernel with @j4nn's commits which hides bootloader unlock status.
The photo quality appears similar on all three devices. Maybe closer scrutiny on a pc will reveal differences.
However restoring original ta with blu hide kernel will always be the optimal solution regardless of camera quality due to the fact that it also restores widevine L1 functions (eg: screen mirroring etc.)
@shoey63, that's right, on phone's display, differences are probably not visible.
But if not zoomed out images are compared on PC, you may see some differences as my test showed.
Most people just take a quick shot to post it on a social network, there you cannot see a difference at all, as the image gets downscaled automatically - so majority may not complain.
Anyway that "restoring original ta with blu hide kernel will always be the optimal solution" is right - should behave as much as in still locked state as we can get.
Mentioning screen mirroring - does it depend on drm too in case of pie?
I tested it with oreo and it needed TA-locked restored with bootloader unlock hidden to get it working - running just kernel hiding BL unlock with lost drm keys is not enough with oreo.
I cannot test it anymore and I wonder if it still depends on drm keys with pie too or if sony dropped that dependency similarly as making camera somehow working instead of green pictures with pie.
@j4nn
Screen mirroring still is reliant on drm keys on Pie.
It won't connect with unlocked bootloader and stock kernel.
However with restored TA backup and blu hide kernel it connects without issue.
The problem with screen mirroring is just the use of HDCP.
You can disable it with persist.debug.wfd.enable=1 or persist.debug.wfd.appmonitoring=1
