Question How to maximize battery life when using the watch (LTE)? - Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

Hello,
So I recently started to use the LTE version of this watch even when I have it since a while ago, waiting to use it because of problems to connect with my previous phone (too old I guess)
And I have some doubts that might result stupid for some people. Those concern mainly to the best way to use the watch to save battery, but I am aware that are several tutorials to maximize battery life.
I can think more or less of 3 major different situations where you can use the watch and the phone in different ways. Out of BT range, in BT range but using the watch, in BT range but using the phone. I explain:
-First and clearest one. Imagine you are at home and you think about going out to run an errand. You go out, you leave your phone at home, you use your watch, activating mobile data and mobile connection so you can receive calls, messages and notifications. This is ok
-Now, imagine you are at home but you cannot use your hands or you cannot have your phone with you, but is within Bluetooth range. What’s the best way to connect them in this case in terms of battery saving? Bluetooth + airplane mode, or just data and mobile connected (Bluetooth off).
If it’s the first way, how come no Bluetooth quick access is in the watch to toggle BT connection?
-The last scenario would be in BT range but using the phone. In this case, I think that switching on Airplane mode makes sense for the clock.
I am not sure if all this makes sense because I am not sure how the watch is thought to be used. But I believe that if any of this makes sense a Bluetooth Toogle should be available in the quick panel.
Any Ideas?

there is a bluetooth toggle available. go into the edit quick settings setup and add it to the active toggles.

Hello!
The only thing available in mine is "Audio bluetooth", which only allows to search for devices to connect audio and that switches on the bt in case it's off, but you cannot use it to switch it off, nor to enter the menu where the bt toggle is.

Even though, what in your opinion is the best way to connect both the phone and the watch when they are together ?

I'm not totally sure what you trying to accomplish here. Here is how my LTE watch is connected. Just like with a non-LTE version the watch is connected to the phone (S22 Ultra) via the Samsung Wearable app. So when the watch and the phone are in BT range of each other they are connected via BT. When they aren't the watch will automatically try the known Wi-Fi and / or an LTE connection. When back in range of each other the watch connects back to the phone and turns off LTE and / or Wi-Fi. I think in most use cases this is the normal expected behavior. The watch will use the phone as it's primary data / location source. When out or range of the phone it will turn on Wi-Fi, LTE or both. Therefore the user doesn't really need to "do" anything. Granted you can turn off LTE or Wi-Fi so they don't turn on automatically which might save some battery when connected to the phone but, then you have to turn them on when away from the phone which for me isn't worth the hassle. So I just leave it all on automatic and let it go.

So, if I understand well what you mean: The watch does not waste any kind of energy in wifi/data and mobile connection when it is within BT range with all those activated, right? And in case a call enters, the connection would be only through BT.
Even though, I belive a quick acces to toggle BT connection would be useful, since you can deactivate it in the same way you turn off wifi connection when you are afar from your smartphone, for the watch no to search for those connections all the time...

Correct, on my Watch 4 LTE it only "looks" for those alternate (LTE/Wi-Fi) connections when the phone is out of BT range (or if the phone itself has no data connection like in an elevator).
And I agree with you on the quick toggles., They should function similar to what's found on the phone, off, on and long press to enter the main setting menu. Unfortunately that isn't the case. Another reason I just leave it on auto and let it do its thing. No matter what I do I need to charge every other day, so it doesn't much matter.
LTE (DATA) and Wi-Fi need to be set to automatic. I do believe they can be toggled to be always on, but why would you want that unless you checking something. No matter what you do battery is going to drain like crazy on mobile data, Wi-Fi isn't hateful but its still significantly more that just BT.

Agree, we definitely could use a quick access toggle for BT connection. Not for battery, but for management and convenience! Cheers

I don't have LTE but I do leave the WiFi on auto and it only turns on when the phone BT is out of range. I do need to turn off BT from settings when I want to use ADB on the watch. Because BT is near, that is the only way you can get the watch to connect to WiFi.

Interesting info. Thank you all for your comments.

Use WiFi when available without turning it on

Hi guys,
I am new to amdroid platform. I've been using symbian before this. I want to know as to how do I auto use wifi when. Available without manually turning it on. Below is a use case scenario.
I have configured wifi as well as gprs. I have turned off background sync so as to conserve battery and the wifi is off. Now when my active sync want to connect to server to synchronize emails, it should auto check if I have a nearby wifi already configured. If yes, then turn on the wifi, sync the data and close the connection thereby disconnecting from wlan. If a known wlan network is not available, use the data plan of my service provider to get the job done.
Now I know for sure that when I've wifi turned off, the phone is not always connected to 3G. It uses it only if requested by an application. But when I turn ON wifi, it always remains connected to the known network. I want to avoid this for saving battery.
Please let me know if there is an app for that. I am using HTC DESIRE Z running Froyo (non rooted). I dont mind rooting the phone for this thing but only if a standard way is not available.
Thanks in advance,
Karan

I think Juice Defender does exactly what you're looking for.
Or Tasker if you really want to customize and make it location-based.
Good luck, and welcome to Android! I also came from Symbian.
Technically the phone can't know if there is wifi available unless wifi is on..
However, a tool like Tasker can use various contexts in order to determine if Wifi is to be turned on. For example you could use cell tower ID's to determine if you're at a certain (fairly wide area) location, like "at work". Or you could use GPS to get more fine tuned information, however it doesn't necessarily work indoors.
Or Tasker could also turn on Wifi if ActiveSync is running, assuming it's a distinct program it can detect.
I see in the time I opened the thread and responded someone else suggested Tasker as well. It's several bucks but it's well worth it, it does a LOT.
You should try an app called "Y5".
JuiceDefender does this for me. It must use gps positioning to determine if you are in an area that you have as a familiar wireless network. When I am home my wifi turns on and connects automatically. When I leave it shuts it off. JuiceDefender is great for many reasons beyond this.

GPS uses tons more battery power than just leaving WiFi on would. It might be using cell tower triangulation for a rough area, but I doubt it. The most efficient way to detect if familiar wireless is near, is to turn the WiFi on for a minute or so and do a scan.

WiFi doesn't use power to maintain the connection until it's needed, or something wakes it and it realizes its no longer connected. 3G uses power to track cell tower connectivity and stay connected, but it is very little. WiFi only uses more power when you're in an unfamiliar location, since it actively scans for new wireless networks.

[Q] Wifi Disconnects when bluetooth device is connected

I have had my note pro wifi model connected to both a 2.4g & 5g dual band wifi router and while using the tablet I have a strong consistent connection. I recently bought the samsung mouse & keyboard. I have noticed that anytime I connect either device to my tablet via bluetooth, within about 30 seconds my wifi connection drops everytime. I have had my phone, along with my note 8 connected to the same wifi to confirm that my router is working fine. I am using a stock (non-rooted) note pro, updated to the most recent 4.4.2 that samsung has made available. As soon I turn off my bluetooth connected devices, my wifi signal doesn't drop connection and works perfect. Has anyone else had any issues and know of anything that could be done to fix the problem I am having? Thanks
I've noticed my WiFi dropping and then reconnecting (at least getting those pop-ups at the bottom of the screen alerting you to the WiFi cycling) for some time and I've always used the Logitech Pro bluetooth keyboard.
I hadn't considered that it might be related to this as it's always been in the mix. I'll try it without it for a bit to see if WiFi just stays on.
I just received the Samsung Keyboard yesterday, and immediately noticed my wifi dropping off. Weird, and a total bummer. Up until this issue, I have been completely in love with this device, not finding any shortcomings from what I expected. Hopefully an update fixes this.
I'd be curious to know the specifics of the devices and networks to see if there's a correlation. Things like exact model of the note pro, kernel version and build number in addition to make and model of wifi router/ap and type of encryption used. It's more likely an issue on the tablet side than the type of network but still possibly helpful. The thing is, with no development activity for these tablets here its doubtful anyone can fix the issue. Perhaps by drawing some correlations though better info could be given to Samsung.
I don't frequently use a BT keyboard but on my SM-P900 (kernel version 3.4.39-1182544, build KOT49H.P900UEU1ANC5) I'm getting stable wifi on both 2.4Ghz band and 5Ghz band while using my Logitech BT Keyboard. Network is an ASUS R6300 router using WPA2 encryption.
I have the Att Note Pro 12.2" SM907-A with Samsungs S Mouse ET-MP900D and Logitech Pro Keyboard. Since I have an AT&T version it allows me to turn off WIFI and use LTE to eliminate issues. I went to an AT&T store and should the onsite staff the issue. They were amazed and did tell me I wasnt crazy. My WIFI issues happen every where. I travel for work so its alot of hotels, AT&T wifi spots and also a work location. No Matter the WIFI with Bluetooth it cuts in an out.
My next step was to reset the Note Pro and add the bluetoth items back in.
I can happily say my P905 does not have this issue.
I'm using the Logitech K810. Spend last night typing about 80 pages worth of text on it whilst playing the Emmy awards livestream over WiFi, it didn't drop once.
Tested it again just now, 5 minutes, 4 pages and TuneIn, no drop. Speedtest does this:

It does appear to be capped at 65Mbps, instead of the 120Mbps my laptop gets. But I've always seen Android devices do that.
Mine only seems to drop wifi when I take the tablet off the bluetooth keyboard, walk to another room and use the tablet without the keyboard. If I leave the tablet sitting on the Samsung keyboard and use the bluetooth S-Mouse as well, my wifi seems fine. I used the tablet with the keyboard and mouse last night for about an hour, no issues with wifi. This morning I took the tablet off the keyboard to read the news while drinking my coffee at the kitchen counter, wifi was dropping in and out non-stop. Turned bluetooth off, the issue goes away. Weird and frustrating.
any fix yet for this crap? I use a Logitech 810, and a Logitech

I need to use wifi with bluetooth as i only have a 2 gig plan. why would a top of the line tablet have a lame issue like this? I constantley bork up important password entries that lock me out after 3 attempts. Not a professional level tablet with this problem by all means. I notice the bluetooth keyboard and mouse disconnecting constantley, as well as the wifi. Very pissed as I just spent about a grand on this crap setup. Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2... lol need to bust out my windows 8.1 tablet so everything works i guess.
This is beginning to annoy me quite a bit now as well. There needs to be an update for this but it appears no such hardware update is forthcoming. Our only hope may be Lollipop.
Will we be getting a lollipop on this eventually?
Did a little Googling (No, I really just filled in "android wifi bluetooth disconnects") and this was the first hit:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=41631
Apparently this is an Android issue that has been around since 4.2 on the Nexus 4. It also seems to happen on CM and other customROMS. Since it wasn't fixed in 4.3 nor 4.4, I have little hope 5 will fix the problem.
I still don't have the issue though, I'm currently typing this on my K810 whilst playing music through TuneIn over my JBL Charge 2... No disconnects, no drops.

I suspect there will be SOME means of getting it even if it's unofficial. I sure as heck will be looking to that path. As is, I love and hate the tablet now over this. I cannot believe Samsung has no answer for it.

I just spent an hour on the phone with Samsung going over this and got connected to their Advanced Support team who, after trying to resolve it, will now be looking into this more deeply. They say they'll call me back. Their initial thought is that it's the router. It isn't because I've had the problem on every router I've ever connected with and with every bluetooth device.
However, since we now have someone looking at this it might help to a) call them as well to add to the weight and b) list here the routers and devices we've tried.
I my case:
Samsung BT keyboard
Logitech BT keyboard (both for this device)
Plantronics BT headset
Sixaxis controller.
Router:
Asus Blackbird RT-AC66U.

I use the Wi-Fi tether on my rooted beans 4.3 galaxy s3. Haven't really tried it on another WiFi connection.. I'll try tonight over at my moms. I don't think its a router problem..but who knows. What's the number you called to report? I will give the a call to because this is ridiculous.. The tablet seems to be faster off WiFi to..all around snappier.

I don't have one, sadly. I use my Logitech M705 with nano receiver over USB OTG.
I already have both a bluetooth keyboard and a bluetooth speaker connected, so in theory if multiple bluetooth devices caused this, I should already be experiencing the issue.
As it said in the Google Support thread as well, there is no clear indication as to why some devices are affected and others are not.
Well..mine works fine like that to..I believe its a tablet issue. Bluetooth Mouse keyboard combination..
I use the 810 keyboard and a Bluetooth mouse. It drops Wi-Fi whenever I have both connected.

I guess to be clear, when using WiFi, a bluetooth mouse, and a bluetooth keyboard, I get WiFi drops, and bluetooth disconnects, not just wifi. Very frustrating. When I turn off WiFi, bluetooth mouse and keyboard work rock solid. The way I can tell, is the mouse will lag, and the keyboard will ghost type, making for a dangerous situation on password protected sites that have limits on sign in attempts. Almost got locked out of my State mainframe site.. not cool.

Remote connection and battery

So, when I'm at home, does the phone/watch use less battery without Bluetooth and connected via remote instead?
Just wondered.
Sent from my SM-G935F using XDA-Developers Legacy app
For the watch stand point, no, Bluetooth always consume less power than Wifi. This is not really up to date paper but should be good enough for comparison UCLA: Energy Consumption Analysis for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Cellular Networks
For the phone stand point, you need that Wifi or lte/3g to get most of the notifications anyway so you dont care how much power it actually consumes it will stay on no matter what. If you run your watch in remote connection mode, you will save some power on phone since it wont have to run bluetooth for watch but you wont be able to answer calls on watch or get delays on notifications and eventually you will consume more power on watch. If you run the watch on bluetooth you will end up using more power on phone because of bluetooth so its a no win situation.
If you have a Lte model of watch and watch's phone number is the same with phone's or you dont care about notifications that comes to your watch, you can put watch on airplane mode but leave bluetooth on to consume less battery.

Wi-fi problems since last update.

Hi, I have mi note 10 pro, currently on global 11.1.3.0 (stable, no root) since ota about a week ago. I have started getting an issue where wi-fi randomly stops communicating with my router (5g network) and I have to turn wifi off and on to get it working.
Router is fine as no other devices have this problem, I have rebooted router and assigned static ip, to no avail. I have tried a factory reset on the phone and also tried all settings relating to wi-fi on the phone that I can find including ones in developer options but problem persists.
Was just wondering if anybody else is having this issue or has a fix, thanks in advance.
Hello, you could tell us you router brand, model, channel, etc. I have a Mi Note 10 Pro and I havent observed a problem (apart from the max throughput being slow, sway lower than what I have with a Mi 9T Pro). I sometimes switch from one routeur to another and there are differences in performance but not a lot. I have ASUS RT-AC68U, Mikrotik wAP ac and the frequency spectrum here is almost desert. The Mi Not 10 is running xiaomi.eu 12.1 20.7.9.
Im on 11.1.2.0 and yesterday at night randomly started the same issue like you described.
For two hours had the problem but till now morning didn't appear again..
noticed the same 2-3x times on the LITE.
the wifi icon is still active and it tells me, that iam connected.
but theres no traffic anymore. websites dont open or anthing else is online.
after wifi turn off/on, it works again.
it was on a tp-link router with 5ghz.
Yes that's the same issue I have, after two days messing with my router settings and reflashing it, and testing with no difference, I deleted the network on phone and re added it and it seems to have sorted its self out for now.
No didn't work after all, started doing it again, going to try 2g wi-fi network for awhile and see if it is only 5g related.
Yeah this is definitely an issue with the phone, 2g network works fine. Have also just discovered that when the traffic stops on my 5g network and I go into wi-fi settings, the phone can no longer see any other networks available, including my 2g network and all neighbouring networks, it still shows the 5g network its connected to but not transmitting to. As soon as I turn wi-fi off and on all the available networks appear again, this must be an update issue as was fine before last update.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to send a bug report to developers?
You don't even mention if your phone has a sim card and if mobile data is active.
Have you tried in Airplane mode (with wifi on) ?
What are your settings under WLAN assistant ? (I have both options off).
Running dual sims, same problem with wi-fi 5g, data on or off. WLAN settings are off, have tried with on as well, same problem. Haven't tried in airplane mode as use work sim and need it on for emergency call outs, so turning off not really an option or solution, can I ask why you think sims or data could cause an issue with the wi-fi, thanks.

It would be a way to test wifi only with the least possible other things that could interfere (I was thinking of bluetooth and auto switching from wifi to LTE data). Maybe you could test for just a few hours or put your SIMs in another phone temporarily.
its also happening without bluetooth active and iam using only one sim.
2,4ghz does work 100% without issues.
Ok I see, but not sure that would be the problem, as I always have Bluetooth off and data off and get the problem, will try to test on airplane mode late at night, as no spare phone, just a pain as some times the issues happens within a few minutes of selecting 5g network and some times takes a few hours! So might take a while to test properly, but will give it a go, thanks

Do you have access to your router / access point logs where disconnections may appear ?
I've checked in my router's log and the only references of my phones are daily DHCP renewal.
Here are the 5 GHz parameters of my router that work well for my phones (and everything else). But I am located far from a city and seem to be the only one using this frequencey here. Maybe someone is using the same frequency / channel near you. You may try a change.

That's the problem, the router still shows the phone as connected and the phone also says its connected, its just that the traffic stops, there are at least ten other devices using the same router with no problems on the 5g network and the phone was working great for months before last update. I will try and change channels later tonight when everybody is off the network, thanks
Changing channels did nothing, have submitted a log through the bug report feature you can get to in update settings, guess I'll just have to wait for an update.
Just got the miui 12 update and wi-fi problem still happening, looks like I'll be getting a new phone soon!
I had the same problem with Android 10 on many different phones, and I discovered the following fix which works reliably.
Nearly all routers use a "combined" mode where they use the same Wifi SSID for both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, and the device can pick which one it connects on. This is usually good on most devices, phones, laptops, Macbooks, smart TVs, etc. But only on Android 10 phones I've found that the device gets confused. It starts in 2.4Ghz mode and midway kind of forgets about it and switches the same WiFi connection to 5Ghz mode (or vice versa). Traffic simply appears to hang up with no packet reply – because the phone is suddenly expecting response in the newly switched band, whereas router is still assuming connection on the other band. I believe it has something to do with the Intelligent Wifi hotspot selection feature in Android 10. Also I've seen that Android 10 in many cases defaults to the lower bandwidth 2.4Ghz band rather than the higher bandwidth 5Ghz connection, which makes bandwidth slower.
The simple fix is to login to your router, and configure a different SSID for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. All routers let you do this. So you'd call 2.4Ghz SSID as, say, "MySSID" and the 5Ghz SSID as "MySSID5G". Connect your device to the 5G band, and everything is reliable and probably faster than before since your phone is no longer connecting to the slower 2.4Ghz band!

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately my router is already configured as you suggest and the problem still happens.
I've also 5ghz only mode enabled.
problem is still there.
Anyone found any fix for this ? Mi note 10 on miui 12, having issues with both 2.4 and 5ghz networks...wifi icon seems to be connected, but apps don't load. Tried everything, combined networks, only 2.4, only 5ghz, different routers, etc. Very frustrating issue.

Question AutoWear for turning on LTE only when Galaxy Watch 4 is disconnected from Wifi/ Bluetooth

Hello everyone,
Is there a possibility to use AutoWear to turn on LTE only when the watch is no longer connected to the phone via bluetooth or wifi? I'm sure this will save battery life. One presumption is that calls over wifi to the watch would work. If they don't, not much point of turning off LTE.
I read a few posts stating that AutoWear for Wear OS 3 may not be properly optimized. Is this still the case?
I found a similar topic posted in r/AndroidWear 4 years ago and at that time, the developer had said that this isn't possible as they didn't have access to the LTE radio. Does anyone know if that's how things still are?
Thank you
No need for this. There is an "auto" option under mobile networks on the connection settings on the watch that does exactly what you say.
Oh that's brilliant!
Does it still stay connected to the network and turn off mobile data or does it pretty much go on airplane mode with only wifi and bluetooth being on?

It disables network connection shortly after you are connected to your phone via Bluetooth or Wifi.
Just to add that the same happens with Wifi. You can either fully deactivate it or have it on an auto setting where it turns on only if you are not connected to your phone via BT or for apps that required Wifi such as downloading songs on Spotify
That's exactly what I'm looking for! Thanks a lot for confirming this.
So essentially, if the watch is always connected to the phone, there shouldn't be much of a difference in the battery life between the LTE and non-LTE versions
There is only one problem - for me, setting LTE to car consumed 30% of the battery in 1 day, even though it did not lose the BT connection for a moment (maybe max 5 minutes).

Sorry, I didn't understand. Setting LTE to car? What does that mean?

I'm sure the author of the posts made the mistake. he wanted to say that the galaxy watch 4 has an error at the moment (01/21/2022)? at least for me, the bluetooth is connected, but the LTE connection stays connected as well, so the battery uses both BT and LTE, although my active2 when BT is connected, the LTE connection disconnects automatically ... although on the galaxy watch 4 the LTE connection is set to connect / disconnect automatically
