When I make or receive a call the screen on my 9A immediately blanks and I can do nothing until the call ends.
How can I prevent this from happening?

I don't put it to my head - I don't get the chance.
As soon as a call comes in the screen goes blank.
I took off the screen protector and cleaned the glass - no improvement.
In the Proximity test menu it should show a value of 5 and go to 0 when it is covered - but it never shows 5, and is stuck on 0.
I wondered if cleaning the proximity sensor may help, so I followed this video to do that -
At 2:05 in the video, he takes out a small black piece and then cleans the back of the glass in the opening.
I don't have that piece, does anyone know what it is?

if that doesn't help you can try to use flat screwdriver and scratch glass where Proximity sensor is placed (the glass).
I have encountered it in some iPhones aftermarket LCDs (the dark layer was too thick)

Can't seem to find anywhere to calibrate - can't turn it off either (unlike in previous versions)

if you still have it i. parts, just boot to android, go to service menu and test sensor on the table (don't put it beside LCDs glass).
if it still doesn't work, it would be a good idea to replace it (xiaomi parts are cheap).
Or go to youtube and search for xiaomi proximity calibration

When I go into the menus to test the proximity sensor (*#*#6484#*#* on the phone keypad) it should have a value of 5 until you cover the sensor at which point it should changs to 0. Mine shows 0 constantly - implying the sensor is covered.
Where can I get the parts - I am in the UK.
for me it gets value 1 when nothing is close and 0 when I approach sensor.

Well this is getting annoying...
After I found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1164740, I managed to successfully apply my screen protector that covers the whole screen. It has a small opening on the upper left for the proximity sensor.
So I was ready to stock up on those SP. I went back to my online seller but the guy ran out of those. So I just went to look for another seller. But after going through roughly 30 online sellers, I couldn't find those exact same SP!! They either have those type that only covers the middle part of the screen, or those that cover the whole screen including the proximity sensor.
I finally managed to find one though, but it costs roughly US$2 a piece, which is expensive considering that I currently live in China. I mean it's selling 5 for US$3.15 in ebay (incl. shipping), and those things came from China!!
Sure all those full screen protector that I found online here cost 20 cents a piece, but none of those accommodate the proximity sensor on the top left.
Anyway I ordered 2 of those $2 SP and will see how they turn out. But just out of curiosity, if I was to get those SP that covers the proximity sensor, will it affect the sensor? Anyone has any experience with this?

I recently replaced the front frame of my Lumia 820 due to dropping it. While the touch screen now works, I'm having issues with the proximity sensor in regards to calls, where it turns the screen black and doesn't come back on when taking my face away from the screen.
I took it all apart again, used compressed air to blow any dust away and made sure nothing was blocking the sensor.
Is there
a. any way to disable the proximity sensor?
b. does it anything to do with the Amber update? (works fine prior to this)
c. is there a way to go back to an older version of the firmware?

I am experiencing the same fault as what you guys are describing. I've even ordered from other sources to see if it was a faulty batch of screens, but still blank in call. Is there something in the fitting process that is going wrong? Any update or Fix would be great!

My friend had the exact same issue after replacing the screen. He finally took it to his local Nokia Care centre, they noticed straight away that the replacement screen wasn't a genuine Nokia part, fitted a Nokia one & he's never had a problem since.
simply make a call and try pressing the left side of the earpiece

just make a call and when the display goes black, simply press the left side of the earpiece, then you can see the display. its the problem with the new touchpanel. tigtly fix the touchpad to the panel and you can get it working. not a big issue. i too faced the issue and noticed the solution accidently. hopes it ill be usefull to you guys

Hi. I have been tightening keepeng pressing on top left... Simply took it off digitizer have cleaned to clear proximity glass on digitizer. Cutted very small peace of business card and glued it in between sensors gap on actual sensor and assembled back. Works fine

Hey man, I'm having problems with the same issue but can't seem to work out what you mean with gluing the business card in between the sensor gap? Also in my case I have to push quite hard on both sides before the proximity sensor works, even after tightening it all the way.
Hey. Disassemble your phone. On digitiser a designated hole for proximity sensor. I have cleaned that tint place and made it clear. Now look on proximity sensor. Its rectangular shape and has 2 lenses on it. In between , a very tiny space. In my case i took business card, as it thick, then i have cut very small piece of business card and glued it in that place. Give me you email, so i send you a picture

most of china digitizers work ok but many of them have got extra not cutted plastic in upper left corner (see picture)
this extra plastic makes bigger space between digitizer and frame that's why proximity sensor "think" it's covered.
There is no hope to make it work without cutting such plastic. Unfortunately this cut must be exactly "in line" with line from digitizer operation lines so it's almost impossible to make. China manufacture must make new type of digitizer with thinner digitizer lines and always cut such extra plastic. Then digitizer will be exactly flat on frame and proximity sensor will be close to his hole in digitizer and will work 100%.

How did you remove the color coating to the lens? And do you think that made a difference? Or was it the extra pressure the tiny strip of card put on the sensor?

Hi I have bought an LG G2 D802 from eBay for practically nothing. The only thing that was wrong with it is that the screen had been replaced by what I presume is a cheap Chinese copy and after the replacement the screen would seem to turn off randomly (particularly during calls) and could not easily be turned back on again. Otherwise the phone works fine. The only thing that doesn't work is the proximity sensor. However I presume that this is a result of the new screen. Having read around on several forums, it seems that the proximity sensor is extremely sensitive to things like screen protectors, which can obstruct, or limit or prevent the functionality of the proximity sensor entirely. I therefore concluded that the likely issue was because the proximity sensor is likely to only respond to light over a given number of polarities (dark infra-red, placed against face, something similar I presume, in daylight or bright light, nearer the blue end of the spectrum etc). This would simplify how the proximity sensor should work under a number of given scenarios.
In the end the workaround was simple. I simply opened the phone and disconnected the proximity sensor and placed a small piece of insulating tape over the sensors connectors so it couldn't inadvertently reconnected when I closed the phone. The phone is now 100% fully functional, minus the proximity sensor of course. It now just functions like any other normal smartphone. I am naturally more than pleased with this outcome, given what I paid for the phone, which itself is in otherwise mint condition.
However the question I have is that the reason the proximity sensor was included was to prevent accidental button presses when making or receiving a call, when for example the phone is pressed against one's face. However it strikes me that exactly the same functionality should be possible in software? What I am looking for then is an app that will either lock the screen (or turn it off) to prevent accidental button presses in this way while a call is in progress and that will disable itself as soon as a call is ended. I of course need to be able to easily disable it, either from the lock screen, or via the power button, so that for example when I dial an automated dialling service and they want me to press buttons to navigate their menu I can still do this.
There seems to be a few apps around that can do this, but my question is, which is the best? Which is likely to cause the fewest problems for what I want?
I have ordered a new proximity sensor from China in case the proximity sensor itself might be at fault, but really having read that this can cause several problems and is rather more 'gimmicky' than practical, I think a software solution would probably be better anyway.
it should be replace with same hardware sir to be able for your device able to control it.
So has anyone found a fix for this problem aside from replacing the sensor itself? Maybe a build.prop or by using terminal. My phone screen wont stay on because it detects its in my pocket all the time posted screens below of useful info.

I have LS980 (LG G2 ofcourse).
I replaced the screen, and I actually refurbished the screen with LOCA glue myself, it is perfect, but apparently there's an issue with the proximity sensor, due to the specific shade they use to cover the inside of the glass at the location of the proximity sensor.
After replacing the screen, the Knock ON was not working, but KNOCK OFF was working fine.
In the Sensor Box i saw that i was getting half of the light that i was supposed to (on another LS980 i was getting about 800, while on the "faulty" one i was getting 400 light.)
And also the proximity sensor was dead, it showed 0.0 and a fallen plant.
I tried putting some tape, and colored it with a permanent market between the proximity sensor and the glass, and the KNOCK ON began to work, but during calls, the screen would not shut off.
I figured, there must be some SYNC between the light the screen is getting, and the proximity sensor, so i scraped off the paint that was on the glass where the proximity sensor is, so there will be much light coming in, and IT WORKED!!
SOLUTION:
Scrape off the dark paint on the glass (inside) at the location of the proximity sensor. do it gently.
clean it with alcohol so there will be no remains of paint.
don't be shy to press the Thanks button if this worked

Before you start to scrach the touch, try this.
On LG D-802 , the ruber thing on the proximity sensor was cousing me promblems. CUT the ruber only the part atached on the light sensor and proximity and turn it around. The big hole that was once on the light sensor(Ruber) comes on the proximity...
And that fixed my proximity. Now the light sensor is covered with the small hole on the ruber and the small amount of light is passing try that hole, try spreading it with heated something.

I think I am having the same problems with a G2. The digitizer on my girlfriend's phone broke so I replaced it with a digitizer/screen combo. No we can only turn the screen on (power button or knock) when there is a lot of light in the room. If it is dark, the screen will turn on for a second and then turn off. The screen doesn't go dark during a call either.
This problem didn't start until I installed the new screen. I scraped half the paint off but it didn't seem to make a different. I also don't have the screen completely sealed as I didn't have tape pre-cut for the shape of the phone. I wouldn't think that makes a difference but who knows.

Clean your screen protector, if you have plastic protector REMOVE the screen protector.
Flash FTF with all WIPE options selected..

Mostly, screen protector cause that. Second sensors might be broken. Software is the last thing (if comes with stock)..
Go to *#*#7378423#*#* service test and go to proximity sensor, if it stays "ON" something is wrong with the proximity sensor, if you are absolutely 100% sure nothing is blocking your sensor, have you ever changed your display assembly? try pressing down around the top right of screen with a little force, both front and back if it switched to "OFF" when you press your screen there's a slight gap between your motherboard and front glass.

Holy this is it. I had to get my front glass replaced because it was shattered, when i press the screen it turns off, when i block the sensor it goes back to on again until i press on the screen. Also my vibrator motor seems to not function properly since, it sometimes doesnt vibrate at all, and sometimes with very little feedback. Could this also be a result of the replacement?

It could be the glue is not settling in correctly and adds very little gap than original one, did you replace the screen yourself? Mine showed this behavior I then reheat the edges of the screen with hair dryer then put pressure around the screen with those black paper clips, reheat it again then let it cool for about 2 hours.
I'm not entirely sure about the vibrator motor

I bought this phone second hand and it had this issue, What I did was hair dryer and paperclip. and ..... try a more ghetto solution, which involves opening the back door, put some foam and double tape it near the camera module, there's an empty space. Make sure it presses the motherboard but not too hard or it will compromise the waterproof glue holding the back cover.

I had that issue, but since I run custom ROM such as SlimX no more black screen don't know why ?
Just for info is someone has this problem, i had small skin flake on the sensor hahahha.

I suspected this was a "hardware" issue as I can hear the main board rattling a bit when I shake the phone. Hence, I tried "cleaning" the sensor, before rooting and installing Xposed Framework to disable the sensor, and this method worked.
Basically, I opened / disassembled the phone to expose the sensor (which is soldered on the main board), and took the small rubber piece out, cleaned the rubber piece, the glass, and the sensors with rubbing alcohol. In addition, I used the small screwdriver which I used the disassemble, to "expand" the holes but not sure it actually did anything
The glass did have minor / some stains (on the inside) which was not visible from the outer glass. In any case, this method worked for me (knock, knock). If this does not last, I will have to resort to rooting / disabling.
