How to create an internet accessible shared folder on my phone? - General Questions and Answers

Hi
I just returned from a long trip overseas, during which I took a ton of pictures and videos (over 250gb, thousands of files)
I would like to share them with other travelers I met, but I don't have a PC and obviously I can't use cloud share because of the massive data size.
Can I somehow create a shared folder on my phone and allow specific people access to it? When I searched online I read that using ftp apps is only available from the same local network.
Thanks!
PS. - I will be using my phone from my local home wifi, my work wifi and my 4g carrier network.

You can install a HTTPS-server on your mobile.

Share folder from Pocket PC on the network (WiFi)

Is there any application that will allow you to create a network shared folder on your pocket PC?
So while connected via WiFi I could just drag and drop files or better yet auto sync from my PC when I connect via WiFi?

Nope; the OS doesn't support this.
However, there are soem ways:
1. Bluetooh FT if you have "real" WM6 with the MS BT astack already supporting File Transfer (not only Obex).
2. FTP server. Unfortunately, the only FTP server I
know of, vxFtpSrv ( http://www.cam.com/vxftpsrv.html ) is commercial - so
is their TFTP server ( http://www.cam.com/vxtftpsrv.html ).
3. If you plan to access it from a desktop, use for example SOTI
Pocket Controller either, which also has built-in file transfer
capabilities - over TCP/IP.
As far as Bullet 3 is concerned, also take a quick look at my remote control / p2p articles (for example,
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=514&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
,
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=2109&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
etc.) .
All though that is bad news (I have been searchign for a while, so I kinda expected that it had not been done) I appreciate the response.
I also read your articles about remote control. I have run SOTI's enterprise ppc manager and I like it. The connection was not very stable but that coul dhave been many things.
I will probably build another test server with it and see if my idea will work using SOTI.
Thanks, Lew
although rescofile explorer shows your desktop or laptops shared folders under network folder with proper password and user name and can copy paste(259kbps on 54mbps card) or play videos from shared folder of your laptop on to your pocket pc. it think it is shareable too but can't figure out ,you can also check this out

A program to access my pc from hd2

Hey guys
i have been trying to fing a way to link my computer files or even a drive on my pc to htc hd2 where i can open from any where
and use its files like modefing it or attach any of them to a mail and send it through my mobile
so i will be so thankfull if someone can give me some advice about that
thank you
if you create a dropbox folder on your desktop with items in it you wish to access, you can use the browser on your phone to acess, download and modify them via the dropbox website.
The first step you must take is sharing the drive or folder you wish to access. This is achieved by right clicking the desired item and selecting "Properties", then going to the "Sharing" tab and staring blankly at it until the wysiwyg interface makes sense.
Once your share is created, you should either buy Resco Explorer and use it's "map network path" function while connected to your home Wi-Fi, or install/buy nothing but apply slightly more elbow grease and access your files using WM's built in file explorer.
The built in File Explorer application can access net shares by choosing "Menu"=>"Go To"=>"Open Path"=>"New Path..." and inputting the share adress formatted as follows: "\\ComputerNameOrIP\Share".
Now, this will obviously only allow WiFi access. To have truly anywhere, anytime type access install an ftp server on your pc in combination with "kickme.to" or a similar service and setting secure ftp shares for aforementioned files and folders, having RTFM'ed beforehand on both FTP serving and IP dynamic rerouting services such as kickme.to.
My sincere hopes to have made sense, DuperMan
You could also try Live Mesh. A free service from Microsoft which is quite similar to Dropbox but has a native WM client which I find preferable to browser access.
It's worth noting that a Dropbox WM client is in development, and I personally can't wait for that!
Thank you doperman

Run a website on your Android Phone

*edit- For some reason, this thread got posted in Android Software and Hacking general instead of Android apps and games :-|
Hey everyone, its me again.
I have recently been using an app called Paw Server for Android. Though it may seem stupid, this app can really come in handy. The app itself is a utility for managing messages, contacts ect.. But what many people do not realise is that you can host your own website on it, wherever you go. Though this will only work over wifi, you can optionally do some port forwarding to make the site accessible over the internet.
To put a custom website on the server, do the following
1. Install PAW Server for android.
2. Mout your phone's SD-Card On your computer
3. This step has two options:
A Website:
Put your website files in /paw/html/ and make sure the index.html is in this directory. (If you need help creating a site, please visit http://cyanstatic.com)
A File explorer:
If creating a website is too much of a hassle, you can just put some files that you would like to access from your browser in /paw/html/. I Put a couple of songs and videos in the folder and had no trouble streaming the files to my browser.
4. Now open PAW and press the 'Start" Button.
Congratulations!
Your website/chosen files should now be accessible from your browser
i use swiftp, does pretty much that, though it is dedicates to do so, so i think it's a bit more comfortable
This is a great tool
Will give it a shot

I used PAW Server to host a WIKI on my Nexus One
I used PAW Server to host a WIKI on my Nexus One....
And it almost worked!
tiddlywiki (google it, I'm new and can't do links) is a one page wiki written in, I can't really tell because the tiddlywiki page doesn't do much about talking about how it works.
But PAW serves the pages, and some of the read/browse functions seem to work -- but I was unable to figure out how to edit a page -- and that could just be my fault.
And installing the wiki was pretty easy. I downloaded the zip file to my pc, moved it into my dropbox directory, unpacked it into a directory called wiki, and then on my phone, I synced drop box, and I moved the wiki directory into the paws/html directory. And it served up the page just fine.
But I couldn't edit it.
Why does it ask for permissions to everything? ie Camera, Vibrate, etc....
This maybe unintentional with the manifest, but it looks awfully rogue when programs look for permission to things they don't use.
Very cool thanks for the share! Tough it doesn't make much sense serving via mobile, but i might give it a shot and see if I can use some DNS servers too, starting with dyndns.org
Check out Wifi Remote Access for Windows Mobile: You can do the same thing, but it also comes with a whole range of other stuff.
To edit it, you just need to go into program file, and add a folder inside public (I think) with all your website files. Then change Wifi Remote Access's default.html to redirect you there, instead of to /fs/

This is because it comes with a site on it for managing your phone, like take pictures from the browser and send sms.
With the server it is also possible to develop web applications that use the Android API.
That's also a reason (apart from the web interface mentioned by GlobaL_TroTTer) why there are so many permission requested.
Great find! This is going to be very beneficial to me if I ever misplace my phone around the house or at school. It also has several features that are invaluable IMHO.
Great App - but not working on Verizon network
PAW Server is a real gem... it works great in a LAN/WiFi environment.
Unfortunately, it appears that Verizon Wireless doesn't route ANY traffic that is not initiated by the phone/user.
So thi nice little personal web server is unreachable over the air.
Same for Telnet, FTP, etc.
If anyone has a working app (on a Verizon network) - reachable FROM the net - please let me know!!

I'm trying to access the server without connecting through wifi. Is this even possible?
Thanks
I've played around with PAW Server. I like the PHP Plugin. I created an offline UPC scanner web app (for retail inventory) in PHP/JS/WebSQL which synched with a remote server. It eventually turned into a Phonegap app.
Directory Permissions
Does anyone have a link to some documentation regarding "Directory Protection" part of PAW?
It mentioned that granting permissions to certain folders must follow the following format
relative-directory:auth-type:realm:users
with a sample of
/test:basic:Test Real:user
But I don't know what auth-types are available. I'd like to grant a certain folder read permissions to everybody.
I just have to say that setting up my own website with PAW was super easy (10 easy steps):
1) Install PAW and start up server: google PAW android
2) Find external IP: google "what's my IP"
3) Go to router (192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 ) and enable port forwarding to your android for the port you used.
4) Set up PHP: Use browser to hit server(192.168.1.?), sign in, go to add-ons, setup PHP, transfer unzipped folder to /sdcard/paw/html/app/plugins/ and restart PAW server
5) create file (mypage.php) with contents(<html><head></head><body><?php echo '<p>Hello World again</p>'; ?> </body></html>) and place it in /sdcard/paw/html/app/
6) Navigate to [myexternalIP]:[myport]/app/mypage.php (note requires login) Unless you changed the port number it defaults to 8080
7) Register for a free domain: no-ip.com
8) Modify host to have "Port 80 Redirect" to the port you configured (typically 8080)
9) Fix permissions on certain folders so joe blow can hit my server <---- How to do this part????
10) Profit!

File manager app in Windows store?

Is there a file manager such as X-Plore or ES File Explorer for WinPhone8?
If anyone hasn't used either of these they are file managers that, when connected to a Wi-Fi home network, you can access shared files and folders using share settings and the IP address on your PC. I'm aware of SkyDrive and I like it, but I haven't seen anything like these two file managers yet, and I miss the ability to have full access to shared folders on my network without using the cloud.
Does anyone know of any out there?

Wi-Fi File Sharing
Okay, so if there's no file manager app (yet?), is there a way to share over a Wi-Fi network without using the cloud?
One of the biggest reasons I was willing to switch from an Android OS phone to WinPhone8 was the idea of seamless integration with my Win8 PC's while on my Wi-Fi home network (or even a mobile network), without the need to use the cloud.
Android has multiple file manager options that offer this capability (and while some considered Zumocast/Motocast to be bloatware, it did offer this capability while on a mobile network), and I can still achieve this with my tablet, but I was kind of hoping to find something similar with WinPhone8.
I'm hoping the apparent lack of this ability is only because of the "newness" of these devices, but this really is something that should be quite simple to do. Especially when using Windows PC's.
Just the opinion of one user who isn't quit ready to fully adopt cloud sharing for everything.

There really isn't a need for a file manager because programs keep all of their data in private local storage and other apps cant see the files.
The only files an app can see (besides it's own private storage) are photos, music & SkyDrive files, if you give permission to access.
Hi all,
I am the happy owner of a HTC 8x for about one week. I love it.
I hve been able to find almost all the apps I was using on my Android HTC Sensation.
So, I repeat i am happy, except for one thing !
When I launched the device for first time, I immediately checked the amount of free memory, which was about 11GB.
After one week, I have noticed that I lost 2GB which are listed under the category "others" (using the Windows Phone sync app under iOS).
Is someone has an idea of what these files could be ? (I ave already check that the downloaded maps for the Maps application are located here, but it is only a small part of it).
As, it is impossible to see those files in the PC explorer, is there a way to get more info on this huge amount of "hidden" files ?
Thanks in advance
jlgoa.

Downloaded apps and app data uses the storage space. So is the browser. Try cleanup the browser cache. I was supprised that 8x does not report free storage space in its settings app.
As for OP's quest, there is really nothing you can do so far with WP8 to use the file share even if you can have the File Explorer you wanted. Apps just can't take advantage of that due to the fact of isolated storage. Even though, WP8 instrduced more tradditional folders for app to access (My Documents etc), most apps (including Microsoft's own Email app) aren't updated to access those folders yet.
For access media files, you should use the media sharing built into the apps like Xbox music or other DLNA apps.
A DLNA server sounds like more of what I'm looking for. I use file managers on my Android devices not because of the need, but because I'm kind of old-school. And some made it easy to share over LAN.
I'll look more into XBOX music and I just downloaded Media Hub, so I'll play with that too.
I guess I was just searching for the wrong thing in the app store. Thanks
Update: MyMediaHub is pretty much exactly what I've been looking for. Although it's not perfect.
XBox music though... it's syncing fine between my two PC's, but it's having problems so far syncing with the phone. Is the subscription service only for removing ads when streaming from the internet?
Xbox music seems to be limited to play either local contents on the phone or Xbox Music subscription (where you get listen to songs offered by Xbox Music service by paying them monthly fees). It doesn't seem to support any types of DLNA streaming. I was confused with the Xbox Music app on Windows 8 tablet where it can stream from local network.
It's unfortunate that one app does not offer the same capabilities on every device.

Xbox Music will only Sync to a limited number of devices per account (I think it's 4). You should check your Xbox Music account to see if maybe there are PCs or Phones that you previously used, and no longer use. You can drop two of these devices every 30 days. Once you are below the limit, try using it on your phone again.
Cool. I'll have to look at that later when I get home. Those settings must only be available on the full version?

[Q] Need suggestions: Syncing music across multiple platforms

Hello,
This is my first post on xda, been reading it for a while though. I read many suggestions about syncing music around multiple platforms, but none of them seem to be effective or to be tailored to my specific needs. First of all, I'm Canadian, so Google Play Music is sort of unavailable to me for the moment. Next up, I just received a bunch of new devices that I'd like to keep in sync (I'll list them soon). I was wondering what would be your suggestions, apps, websites or cloud services that YOU use, and if they would apply to my situation or not. I'm not looking for a "perfect" solution, but I'm certainly interested in a discussion about the best method.
Here's the "situation" I have to solve. I have a Desktop PC at home (Windows 7), where I download and rip all of my music. There is around 8gb of carefully tagged and sorted out music on that computer. I use iTunes as a player while on it, and keep all the .mp3 files in a folder. Since it is a desktop PC, it has no wireless connection whatsoever and is connected through an ethernet cable (from a WiFi router). Now I just purchased a Laptop (Windows 7 as well) and a Nexus 7 (16gb + Android 4.2). I also have a Galaxy Nexus (16gb + Android 4.2, no data plan). I'm basically looking for a way to "share" that library across these four devices. This means that if I was to be adding a song to the desktop PC, I would be able to listen to it in the next few seconds on my Nexus 7 or Galaxy Nexus and vice-versa. Same if I was to be adding a song on my laptop, I would be able to listen to it on my computer and across my devices.
I'm not really interested in a "streaming" solution (rdio and the likes), as I do not have a data plan on my phone. I'm also looking for a solution as wireless as possible (so something over WiFi or cloud service.) I'm ready to shell out a couple bucks provided that a service would require additional storage solutions. Most of the time I will listen to these songs while being "offline", so in the subway or while working out, so these songs need to be accessible at any time (basically stored on the devices). Also if somehow I could "share" other stuff like contacts or documents that would be a plus, but not really a requirement at all.
I hope my "situation" is clear, and I hope you guys have some sort of "answers", Hopefully that technology is available nowadays (we're in 2013!).
Thanks for your time!
You could always use Spotify...
Spotify allows adding of local files and automatically syncs these files when discovering two clients on the same Wi-Fi network.
(Granted you set the playlist those songs are located in as Available Offline, and there's a Local Files native playlist)
It's a $9.99 dollar sub to use it on mobile devices though, and I don't think two desktop clients sync local files, but that's as easy as doing a bulk-transfer from one comp to the other when you've added new songs and asking Windows to ignore existing files, alternatively Ubuntu One has a folder sync that's limitless space because the files aren't stored on their servers, iirc.

"Not yet available in your country." It sounded like a good option, but it looks like it's unavailable to Canadians. Thanks anyway for the suggestion.

Would you care to explain a bit more? I'm not very familiar with Dropbox or Google Drive. I know you can create a folder on your computer and every time something is dropped into that folder it is shared across all computers, but how would I use FolderSync? Is it related to Dropbox or Drive? And why use both services? Is it because of the limited storage space? Would 8gb of music fit on those? Thanks, let me know!
