Is there a file manager such as X-Plore or ES File Explorer for WinPhone8?
If anyone hasn't used either of these they are file managers that, when connected to a Wi-Fi home network, you can access shared files and folders using share settings and the IP address on your PC. I'm aware of SkyDrive and I like it, but I haven't seen anything like these two file managers yet, and I miss the ability to have full access to shared folders on my network without using the cloud.
Does anyone know of any out there?

Okay, so if there's no file manager app (yet?), is there a way to share over a Wi-Fi network without using the cloud?
One of the biggest reasons I was willing to switch from an Android OS phone to WinPhone8 was the idea of seamless integration with my Win8 PC's while on my Wi-Fi home network (or even a mobile network), without the need to use the cloud.
Android has multiple file manager options that offer this capability (and while some considered Zumocast/Motocast to be bloatware, it did offer this capability while on a mobile network), and I can still achieve this with my tablet, but I was kind of hoping to find something similar with WinPhone8.
I'm hoping the apparent lack of this ability is only because of the "newness" of these devices, but this really is something that should be quite simple to do. Especially when using Windows PC's.
Just the opinion of one user who isn't quit ready to fully adopt cloud sharing for everything.

There really isn't a need for a file manager because programs keep all of their data in private local storage and other apps cant see the files.
The only files an app can see (besides it's own private storage) are photos, music & SkyDrive files, if you give permission to access.
Hi all,
I am the happy owner of a HTC 8x for about one week. I love it.
I hve been able to find almost all the apps I was using on my Android HTC Sensation.
So, I repeat i am happy, except for one thing !
When I launched the device for first time, I immediately checked the amount of free memory, which was about 11GB.
After one week, I have noticed that I lost 2GB which are listed under the category "others" (using the Windows Phone sync app under iOS).
Is someone has an idea of what these files could be ? (I ave already check that the downloaded maps for the Maps application are located here, but it is only a small part of it).
As, it is impossible to see those files in the PC explorer, is there a way to get more info on this huge amount of "hidden" files ?

Downloaded apps and app data uses the storage space. So is the browser. Try cleanup the browser cache. I was supprised that 8x does not report free storage space in its settings app.
As for OP's quest, there is really nothing you can do so far with WP8 to use the file share even if you can have the File Explorer you wanted. Apps just can't take advantage of that due to the fact of isolated storage. Even though, WP8 instrduced more tradditional folders for app to access (My Documents etc), most apps (including Microsoft's own Email app) aren't updated to access those folders yet.
For access media files, you should use the media sharing built into the apps like Xbox music or other DLNA apps.
A DLNA server sounds like more of what I'm looking for. I use file managers on my Android devices not because of the need, but because I'm kind of old-school. And some made it easy to share over LAN.
I'll look more into XBOX music and I just downloaded Media Hub, so I'll play with that too.
I guess I was just searching for the wrong thing in the app store. Thanks

XBox music though... it's syncing fine between my two PC's, but it's having problems so far syncing with the phone. Is the subscription service only for removing ads when streaming from the internet?
Xbox music seems to be limited to play either local contents on the phone or Xbox Music subscription (where you get listen to songs offered by Xbox Music service by paying them monthly fees). It doesn't seem to support any types of DLNA streaming. I was confused with the Xbox Music app on Windows 8 tablet where it can stream from local network.
It's unfortunate that one app does not offer the same capabilities on every device.

Xbox Music will only Sync to a limited number of devices per account (I think it's 4). You should check your Xbox Music account to see if maybe there are PCs or Phones that you previously used, and no longer use. You can drop two of these devices every 30 days. Once you are below the limit, try using it on your phone again.
Cool. I'll have to look at that later when I get home. Those settings must only be available on the full version?

No it doesn´t because at first the Dropbox doesn´t copys the Files automaticaly on my SD and second I have at least 13 gigabytes of Music and only 8gb Dropbox space...

That one is more specific with working with Music/Photo/Video, if you're looking for something a little more generic for syncing, there's also a portable app called Toucan

Try "WebSharing", there is a lite and a paid version. The second one includes some extra options for videos and music I think, not sure on which are the differences, anyway, it works great for me!
You can simply share a folder on your PC and using a file explorer on your phone (I have tried this using Estrong file explorer) you can search the LAN for shared drives. Find the folder you have shared on your PC and access files from your phone.
Well, another method - this is the way I do it, but it requires root access on your phone.
If you have root access, then you can install an app "Samba filesharing". And, this enables to make the phone a samba server.
Then, you can simply connect to ip address of your phone (or the samba server name you specified) from your PC and seamlessly access/modify/delete files on the sd card all the time. I would even suggest mapping a network drive to make it even more convenient.
I would be also interested in a solution like that. Mainly for Music, but also for other stuff/files.
Here is what I tried out so far:
I looked into Double Twist (a cumbersome resource hog on my netbook and always crashing), Winamp Sync (playlist and not folder-based, lack of control on what is happening) and Wifi Music Sync (lots of bad reviews, people lost files and else).
Has anyone tried Sugar Sync? If I read their website right, it syncs first to their cloud, which is the last place, where I want my personal files.
The solution with Samba Server or ES Explorer works (I also tried a simple FTP setup with Filezilla on the Desktop and AndFTP or SwiFTP (FTP server on phone) and any FTP client on the desktop. Problem with those solutions, it's all manual.
So far nothing satisfactory. I'm with the OP on this one, a small, neat, small resource solution, where you simply define the folders to be synced, would be best. Any more ideas? Thanks so far!
Just my 2 cents (definitely an UGLY solution): I've been using Syncness to sync over wifi. It's not the worst solution and has the benefit of working both with locally shared network drives as well as dropbox.

Actually, i love syncness. I've been using it for a month now. It's not perfect, but it works well for me, like syncing my documents folder to my Milestone and DHD, and back.
Titanium Media Sync can do this - syncs all types of files (not just media) - search on market (I can't post a link)

I'm using PCFileSync and have no problems. It's always being updated.
I have Titanium Media Sync, and it works very well for syncing files to dropbox, but I would really like to set it up to work with ftp, so I could sync files straight to my computer. How do I set something like this up? I"m a super ftp noob

I believe what you are looking for is possibly The Missing Sync.

However, I have asked the developer questions and received no answers. There is a trial version available but i'm having issues which need answered by the developer. The software is not cheap at $35.00 single machine license.

Here's my scenario:
2 computers, htc evo 3d (now trying on a galaxy tab).
Desktop and laptop sync the "My pictures" folder (1gb and growing) by using microsoft live mesh. And then, I have The Missing Sync reading the "My pictures" folder and syncing that folder to the Galaxy Tab SD card into a folder called "My Pictures".

(1) Hi, Is there a file count limitations? I plan to use this to sync my pictures folder which has a couple thousand items (1,533 Files, 41 Folders, 1.48gb of data ) as of this moment and growing. This will be to a 32 GB microsdhc card in my evo 3d. Would there be any possible problems I should know about?
(2) Are there any file size limitations? (im aware of fat32 4gb single file size limit of the storage device) But does The missing sync have a file size limit of its own?
(3a) Does The Missing Sync Hash files for sync? If so, does it store temp files?
(3b) How does missing sync determine what needs synced around?
(4) I plan on adding a Samsung galaxy tab ... I'd also like to sync my pictures to it as well as the evo. 1 computer, two mobile devices. Is this possible with single license or will i need a multi license?

the issues i am having are that the whole process takes about 7 minutes from the moment sync is pressed, to any activity is noticed. And then, files start flowing, but 15 minutes later, it stops at random with very vague error log.

+1 for FolderSync. It lets you sync individual folders with Dropbox, with a Windows share, etc.

This is so simple why is there no app that does this, we don't want cloud storage to interfere all we need is a PC/Mac app where you can see your folders/files . Then you want to be able to select folders and files using a checky box ready to sync to ur android device.
Why do you need to select files/folders? Because when you have an mp3 collection of over 40gb you only want a small portion of this on ur android device. The app needs to ensure that ur android device always keeps in sync with the selected PC files so that if you ever add music to ur PC it will get added to android through the sync app.
Now does this app exist or am I going to have to learn to write an android app??

Look into cheetah sync app. Its the closest thing i could find that works for me.

No this is still not right, cheetah sync is just a small service that sits on your pc. you can't use it to select the files on your pc you want on your phone, everything has to be done with folder pairing on the phone. Now if I want to choose 10 albums that are in random locations on my hard drive that would take ages to do on my phone. On the PC this would be a simple task.(If the app exists!!!)
Hi, I want to be able to easily and quickly transfer files from my computer to the tablet. Preferably, wirelessly, and controlled from my computer. I hope we can discuss various solutions in this thread.
Here are the suggestions I and the other participants in this thread have come up with:
SD card: Possibly very fast, but I would need to plug/unplug the card every time, and maybe move files internally
FTP server on tablet: I have tried two FTP servers, both are very slow and stops after a few files.
Samba client on tablet: Should work OK, but I would then have to control it from the tablet
Samba server on tablet: Would be the perfect solution, but as far as I could find out, I need root (which is not yet possible on my B80)
USB connection: Fast and easy, but requires me to unplug the proprietary mad cable from the charger and into the tablet
DLNA: Buil-in support in both Transformer and Windows, but only supports streaming.
Dropbox: Simple and easy, but with space limitations.
SSH/SCP: QuickSSHd
WebDAV: ServersMan
What is your best solution?
Without root you don't have anymore options it seems to me.

Wifi File explorer here in free version, won't allow uploading files to Android, only downloading to the computer, but does a fine job once it's the paid one.
What FTP servers did you try? I admittedly used it ONLY on the Galaxy tab, but FTPServer worked very well for me. At least using Cyberduck as a client on the computer. For example, doing the opposite accessing an ftp server hosted on a computer, AndFTP gave me horribly low speeds. Free version anyway.
More options? Sure. SSH. I use QuickSSHd and again, still not tested on the TF.
Still not finished here, WebDAV in the form of something like ServersMan. Never really used it to be honest. But hey, still an idea right?
Also, give up on DLNA, at least partially. Depending on the client you might be able to only stream multimedia files instead of saving them. Keep in mind that there isn't any upload to a DLNA server, so you'd need a server on the computer (possibly a good one, not WMP) and control everything from the TF. "Everything" meaning pictures, music and videos shared by your server. Upside is that you can just stream stuff without using up space if that is fine with you... like watching a movie for example from bed. And you can get better results if using something that transcodes the files, I found to work very well Plex that however requires the paid app to connect to the Plex media server on your computer, might not be the best thing for you. Useless anyway if you need files that aren't multimedia. (notice so far no subtitles with Plex for Android, my only and actually huge, complaint)
On the TF side you could access the SMB shares on your network with ES File Explorer that works very well. But it's all done from the TF.
Now you have more options
Great post, I will update the first post and try the various solutions. I briefly tested DLNA, and reached the same conclusion. It's a shame, I suppose it wouldn't take much development effort to make file transferring possible when the auto discovery and data streaming implementation is done. Still, I guess that's not the purpose of DLNA.
I tested FTP Server and SwiFTP, both hung while transferring from Windows or WinSCP.
Also, I read that Dropbox supports direct transfer when the two clients are on the same network, great. However, I want to be able to transfer videos without caring about my Dropbox limit...
I use ES File Manager and transfer from my tablet, so far it's the best method.
I just use Samba on my TF and access it from my desktop

Find a good ftp client on your computer (I use filezilla, there a setting for concurrent transfer, set it to max)
Run software data cable, open ftp client, enter ip and port and copy away

I have had good luck with File Expert. It is free and supports transferring using a web interface and ftp. I have mostly used the web interface which always has worked great.

Actually, DropBox is great, but means you have to manually sync files you want.
DropSync solves that problem and makes Dropbox on the tablet work just like Dropbox on your PC/Mac with background syncing. I've been using it for 2 weeks now with no issues and virtually no battery impacts. If you pay you can configure the sync frequency. I have mine at 10 minutes, but a simple options click can force a sync if you really need it. You then have all your dropbox files on the TF.
I would say MyPhoneExplorer is what you need. You can copy or install from PC and it does much more.
I mostly use adb (adbwireless) to push files to the transformer. It seems to work fastest. There is a fuse file system available, so if you are using linux on the desktop you can even mount it. Very convenient!
Get ES File Explorer, go to LAN and point it to your computer's internal IP (requires it to be static)
Then you have access to all shared folders on your computer. Of course, this only works when you're connected to the same network, but I assumed that'd be the case anyway.

They had it free on the Amazon market so I tried it. Worked quite well, I bought it (on the Android Market, I dont like how you need the amazon market installed and how slow it is with updates).
ES file explorer with the PC added as a server sharing the appropriate folders over network works pretty well for me!

Today for the first time I used Bluetooth to send some e-books from my laptop to tablet. Not the fastest way , but convenient for smaller files, as it works without having to install or run seperate apps.

ES File Explorer is great for what it does but it is not what the OP is looking for(Read the title)
+1 for My Phone Explorer, can transfer/delete/move files to sd,microsd, and internal hard drive.
I have both the ASUS Extension Kits - one for USB and the other as an SD Card Reader.
I've tried moving photos from my PC with both kits and the File Manager App with no success. The File Manager somehow corrupts JPG files when using the SD Card Reader and it does not recognize my USB stick.
I can move the photos one or two at a time as an email attachment, but I have several hundred that I'd like to put on the Infinity.
Suggestions? TIA!

A little looking, and I answered my own question. Photo Transfer App works very well wirelessly. I used it on my iPad, and it works well here, too.
Also, there is the wireless option via FTP. I use an old app called SwiFTP. It's no longer developed, but Im sure you can find the apk somewhere. It gives full access to your device and it's FREE! There are other apps like it on the Market as well. I use it whenever I don't feel like grabbing my USB cable.

I'd recommend File Expert. It works through HTTP, so on any computer on the same wifi network with a web browser can get into it provided the user has the correct password. The web page UI for managing files is pretty nice, if a little buggy. Only flaw is that its UI is slow (at least on my Atrix) and not tablet optimized.

Photo Transfer App is also http and works A-OK with no bugs. It will transfer photos or videos in either direction at very good speed. Photos can be batched up to 100 photos, abd videos are done singly. There are both Android and iOS Apps so I can take photos/videos off of my iPad and move them to my TF700.
Even though probably adding a 'solution' to a problem no longer in existence might I add that Total Commander supports both internal and external memory (with root access), (S)FTP, WEBDAV, LAN shares and more, and is still in active development? Also, you would not be limited to transfer of grahical files. (I haven't used specific photo transfer apps yet, so I do not know if they'd provide (a) definite advantage(s). If you think I'm missing out on something, please chime in and release me from my blissful ignorance. )
I've used MyPhoneExplorer for all file transfers. Works over my WIFI network although it will also work over cable.

This is my first post on xda, been reading it for a while though. I read many suggestions about syncing music around multiple platforms, but none of them seem to be effective or to be tailored to my specific needs. First of all, I'm Canadian, so Google Play Music is sort of unavailable to me for the moment. Next up, I just received a bunch of new devices that I'd like to keep in sync (I'll list them soon). I was wondering what would be your suggestions, apps, websites or cloud services that YOU use, and if they would apply to my situation or not. I'm not looking for a "perfect" solution, but I'm certainly interested in a discussion about the best method.
Here's the "situation" I have to solve. I have a Desktop PC at home (Windows 7), where I download and rip all of my music.There is around 8gb of carefully tagged and sorted out music on that computer. I use iTunes as a player while on it, and keep all the .mp3 files in a folder. Since it is a desktop PC, it has no wireless connection whatsoever and is connected through an ethernet cable (from a WiFi router). Now I just purchased a Laptop (Windows 7 as well) and a Nexus 7 (16gb + Android 4.2). I also have a Galaxy Nexus (16gb + Android 4.2, no data plan). I'm basically looking for a way to "share" that library across these four devices. This means that if I was to be adding a song to the desktop PC, I would be able to listen to it in the next few seconds on my Nexus 7 or Galaxy Nexus and vice-versa. Same if I was to be adding a song on my laptop, I would be able to listen to it on my computer and across my devices.
I'm not really interested in a "streaming" solution (rdio and the likes), as I do not have a data plan on my phone. I'm also looking for a solution as wireless as possible (so something over WiFi or cloud service.) I'm ready to shell out a couple bucks provided that a service would require additional storage solutions. Most of the time I will listen to these songs while being "offline", so in the subway or while working out, so these songs need to be accessible at any time (basically stored on the devices). Also if somehow I could "share" other stuff like contacts or documents that would be a plus, but not really a requirement at all.
I hope my "situation" is clear, and I hope you guys have some sort of "answers", Hopefully that technology is available nowadays (we're in 2013!).

You could always use Spotify...
Spotify allows adding of local files and automatically syncs these files when discovering two clients on the same Wi-Fi network.
(Granted you set the playlist those songs are located in as Available Offline, and there's a Local Files native playlist)
It's a $9.99 dollar sub to use it on mobile devices though, and I don't think two desktop clients sync local files, but that's as easy as doing a bulk-transfer from one comp to the other when you've added new songs and asking Windows to ignore existing files, alternatively Ubuntu One has a folder sync that's limitless space because the files aren't stored on their servers, iirc.

Would you care to explain a bit more? I'm not very familiar with Dropbox or Google Drive. I know you can create a folder on your computer and every time something is dropped into that folder it is shared across all computers, but how would I use FolderSync? Is it related to Dropbox or Drive? And why use both services? Is it because of the limited storage space? Would 8gb of music fit on those? Thanks, let me know!

For example, I have all of my music on my cloud storage and wondering if there was a way to trick apps into thinking the music is on a local folder. Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately, I still have to actually download the files to my phone using this app. This would be OK if my phone had an SD card expansion, but my music library is like 70GB and growing.

Maybe you could find a file manager app that can access cloud based storage media that also has a media/music player built-in.
I wouldn't suggest it any longer, but, I believe ES File Explorer had features that might have been able to do what you are doing.
Or maybe try finding a website that can play your media from your cloud storage then add that website's page as a bookmark/shortcut on the homescreen that opens the page to the website when you tap it, then play your media.
Or maybe consolidate all your music to one cloud account using a file manager that has a feature that allows moving data stored in the cloud from one location to another, then find a music player app that can stream from that cloud account.

You need to buy an NAS Drive. I have recommended Western Digital before.
look at this, think of it as an investment, you could aslo use Solid explorer to up load conten directly to a folder.
But in your case, all you need to do is create an ftp frofile (samba) or SMB to download directly to your NAS Drive (network attached storage).
how ever, it involves a bit if tinkering when using a Vpn..
I agree with the post above mine because I'm notoriously known for using Es file explorer, however, im not concerned about it's security in question because it doesn't send out whats on your actual, device. it's just monitoring your usage if the additional features added, like the Facebook, weather, google, etc . all of which can be removed from the app.
So i still use it, regardless of playstores policy.

keep in mind that if you purchase on eBay or Amazon, you won't be covered with the propper warranty.
Also, invest in a 2-3 tb cheap external drive for all your backups in the NAS.
