UPDATED Aug 19, 2010: New Link, for Mirror to ROM. Original was pulled.
Get it here: http://bit.ly/cIXo91
This thread has been updated with great HOW TO VIDEO by XDA member darren rich who demystified a bunch of elements -- making this user-friendly for people with both UNBRANDED HTC Desire phones (GSM) -- and Branded phones -- which can be converted into unbranded phones first, by using the Goldcard process -- which he discusses.

This thread shows you how to update your HTC Desire GSM phone to Android version 2.2, Froyo, MANUALLY, using a WindowsPC computer, running the application "HTC Sync", connecting to your phone via USB cable. It's for usage if you have not been able to update Over The Air (OTA) -- and will provide you the exact same end result.
This is official HTC Software. This is for UNROOTED phones, phones that have only had official software that was originally installed, or OTA official updates. In other words:

You do not need to root your phone to run an RUU. These are official HTC updates that are designed for recovery or for people who cannot upgrade OTA.

RUU means "Rom Upgrade Utility" -- For unbranded phones, this process is straight forward. However if you have a branded phone, you have to add another step, and it's very important. It's also explained within...

Since this RUU is restricted to unbranded phones, you need a "goldcard" to bypass the check if you have a branded phone.

The thread combines (A) information from a previous thread posted by "football" [ROM] RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8 whichincluded the key download link to the primary Froyo file, which was posted by the good people at Shipped-Roms.com, with (B) much clarifying information from Darren and other posters from that thread.
Quick Overview
1. Download 3 files you'll need -- to a Windows machine.
a) "HTC Sync" software that runs on WindowsPCs only. It is the program that puts the initial software on your phone via USB cable.
Get it here: http://www.htc.com/europe/supportDownload.aspx?p_id=312&cat=3&dl_id=933
b) The main ROM -- a .exe file -- located here: (REVISED LINK as of Aug 19, 2010)
RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
See that same file in full context here: (Note: Unfortunately, this page, perhaps that whole site, was pulled, Account suspended)
c) The update to the main ROM -- a zip file -- which will be copied to your phone thru USB cable, not executed thru "HTC Sync". It is located here, from HTC's site:
http://liveimage.htc.com/OTA_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8-1.21.405.2_release4dua3bcrut4wrv30.zip
2. Read Darren's Blog Post, it has good instructions.
3. Watch his Video. It's easy. You'll feel ready to go.
More Details - About That ROM:
NOTE: "HTC BRAVO" = "HTC DESIRE" . Bravo was the original codename used by HTC before the Desire was actually released. You can confirm that by looking at the "DEVICE DATABASE" that is linked to from the top of every page on XDA-developers, under the XDA logo. All versions of the HTC Bravo/ Desire.

I apologize; I do not know the answer to this. I posted this information prior to performing this installation on my own DESIRE. I will be doing that tomorrow (Sat Aug 14). The reason I posted it is that the thread it is based upon took 22 posts before it was explained WHAT it was, what it dis, how to do it. I thought it could be useful to re-package the information.
I also posted a disclaimer... But after I perform this update tomorrow, I will come back and reply here and tell you what I have found. I am assuming (but i do not know one way or another) that this will be information listed on the same screen that shows firmware version # ?

Anybody having issues on the original stock sense unrooted 2.2 ROM? In every Sense 2.2. custom rom I tried I couldn't add more than one gmail account. I then tried unrooting and did the OTA update to 2.2. Same thing, still can't add more than 1 gmail acccount.
So I downgraded and rooted again and tried OpenDesire and could add more gmail accounts without problems. Then I tried a Sense 2.2 custom ROM and again, I coudn't add more than 1 gmail account.
So now I'm thinking to do the unroot with the RUU exe and see if it helps?

Hi, I have scoured the web for information but several hours later I am none the wiser.
I would like to root my device in order to optimize its performance. I am super confused about: cf-root, mobile/pc odin, android version, etc. I still have no idea what is appropriate for my device. :crying: Please point me in the right direction.
I have found may threads out there with very detailed instructions, but I can't figure out if that's what I need. I'm apparently on Gingerbread, but what do I need now? The Icecream, the other one?
Reason for rooting: phone too slow with so many apps loading themselves in the background. I want to be able to prevent all these [expletive deleted] apps from loading themselves automatically. I also want to remove the stock apps I don't need (but can't now remove). I'm tired of factory resetting every other week to improve performance.
Ultimate purpose: phone, sms, whatsapp, news. That's it. I don't need 3d porn or anything. My needs are extremely minimal.
Thanks for any pointers! :good:

Thanks Sewrizer. I'd rather brick the phone than pay for the service. I already have a more recent phone, so this is more of a second device. It's just that I like the typing better so I haven't completely stopped using it. I guess I'm sort of relishing the idea of an experiment with it as well.
Do you have a link to instructions for the above? If it works for your friend, it's good enough for me.
Unless I hear something back, I'm getting ready to try this:

thanks a lot.
which cf-root?
Thanks Sewrizer. As it happens these are the instructions I started with, and from which a lot of confusion arose (I can't post urls yet).
The first link is to Odin3 v1.85, but I have found Odin3 v1.87. Not sure if there is a later version. It says somewhere that the latest version is best.
The second link is to a series of posts with many download links. Somewhere down the page it states that if you're confused, then:
First, go to Settings -> About phone -> Build number. It should say something like FROYO.xxJPy. It's primarily the JPy that we are interested in. Try to match that with a download link available in this (and the next few) posts. Some of the downloads dont just have JPy file name format, but are called xx_xxx_JPy.
Let me explain that. Samsung isn't always very precise in naming/marking their different (leaked) firmwares. CF-Root's are modified kernels, the filenames explain in more detail which exact firmware ROM the base kernel was taken from, for those experts who understand.
If you are not one of those people, go back to the JPy thing. The "y" in JPy is 0-9, A-Z. If they run out of numbers, they use letters. So A would be 10 (9 + 1), while Z would be 35 (9 + 26). Find the one that is closest to yours, if yours is not present, and flash that one.

Well, my build number is of the form GINGERBREAD.zsjv6, which doesn't fit the pattern described (I don't see any JPy, I see jv6), so which version of CF-Root should I download?

PLEASE READ
Rooting carries a risk and may void your device's warranty.
Google Security may block the installation of Kingroot. Either choose to "Install Anyway" or disable your internet connection to continue.
There is both an Android version and a PC version available. Please be aware that the PC version may flash a third party recovery onto your device.
In case Purify isn't something you need, it can be easily removed.
If you uninstall KingRoot, you will lose root access. Reinstalling and re-rooting should be a simple process, however.
While you certainly can replace KingRoot with SuperSU, we can't guarantee success.

INTRODUCTIONKingRoot is an amazing tool for anyone wants to obtain root. Whether you don't have enough experience for more advanced methods (or there are no other methods available), or you prefer a one-click solution, KingRoot is here for you. It's also completely FREE to use!
While rooting with Kingroot, the most suitable root strategy will be deployed from cloud. This method ensures your device will be rooted, if a strategy is available. Most of our supported devices boast a success rate higher than 60%!

Visit Purify
If installed, Purify will help your device run faster, cooler and longer by killing resource-hogging background apps and preventing them from auto-starting. There is also a feature to help you organize and archive your notifications. Go try it out.
Many of Purify's features require root. However, there are still plenty of things it can do if root is not available.
Download Purify on Google Play

PC Version >>> Direct Download
The PC version of KingRoot is more powerful than the Android version. If the mobile app isn't able to root your device, you may have more luck with this, especially if you own a Samsung device.
If there is no available root strategy for your device
Be patient! We are working to ensure as many devices as possible can enjoy root. If our app fails on your device, please use the in-app request system (which is automatic in later releases). Posting here won't speed the process up or give you special treatment. Success/failure reports are also automatic, so there's no need to post here about those, either.
------------------------
Information Collection
There is some discomfort about KingRoot's data collection, but there's nothing to worry about.
If you are afraid we're taking your IMEI to use it to make a counterfeit phone, don't be. We have no interest or knowledge in that matter.
Data collection is for more accurate deployment of available root strategies. We need to get some information about your device and the software running on it in order to provide you with the most successful root strategy we have for you.
While we do collect your IMEI, it is encrypted in transit, and only used to accurately calculate the success rate of our root strategies.
This information is not saved on our servers; it just isn't worth the trouble. We have a lot of users downloading and using our app. To host all that information, we'd need to spend large sums of money for server space, and that just isn't practical for a free service.

FAQ
Q: Why KingRoot can not be removed ?!
A: This situation always happened on some devices with system protection mechanism such as SONY, HUAWEI and so on. Sometimes, root strategy only can close these system protection mechanism temporarily during root process. That's why KingRoot can be installed. However, after root finished or device reboot, system protection mechanism will enable again. After that, system can not be mounted. That's why KingRoot can not be removed.
Q: What can I do if KingRoot can not be removed ?!
A: If you can not remove KingRoot , please try to force stop KingRoot, clear data of it and root device with KingRoot again. Then unroot it immediately.
Q: All questions about SuperSu !
A: Please click here for answer.
Q: How to improve root success rate (Especially for ZTE Zmax)?
A: Click here for answer please
Q: Why the desktop version can be better?? And which CUSTOM RECOVERY does it install?? Will it trig KNOX??
A: Because of desktop version not depends on system exploit but to flash a Rom with Su binary, it's more easily and violent. CUSTOM RECOVERY includes CWN and some self made recovery which developed by ourselves or our partner teams. And we have a reason to believe that desktop version will trig KNOX
Q: Does KingRoot on Samsung trig Knox flag to 0x1?
A: Click here for answer please
Q: Can KingRoot root the phone with wi-fi and mobile data turned off?
A: No, it downloads the best exploit for the device, on the fly
Q: Which permissions does this app exactly ask ?
A: Permissions of KingRoot required all can be seen when you install it. We need so many permissions because some root solution need to be run on them.
Q: What is the benefit of paying coders for support if the app is free?
A: We sponsored by one of the biggest IT company of China, lots app of them need to get root access through us.

I have an old phone that uses Android 2.x, I think froyo or gingerbread. I want to download AFWall+ which is a firewall application that's the successor to DroidWall. The problem is the most recent version no longer supports the Android version used by my old phone. The app's details are here (I can't make it a hyperlink because I don't have 10 posts):
Code:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dev.ukanth.ufirewall&hl=en
The relevant part says:
- Supports 4.x ,5.x and 6.x (for 2.x support use 1.3.4.1 version)

But the problem is I don't know how to get the 1.3.4.1 version and verify it is the legitimate version. There are a lot of websites that offer downloads for older versions of apks but they could inject anything they want in them couldn't they?
I would ask the developer in his thread what is the proper way to go about this but as I mentioned I don't meet the post requirements at the moment.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

@ukanth Sorry to bother you again but I can't find version 1.3.4.1 in your thread. Did you ever get a chance to post it somewhere? I can get it from a 3rd party website but I just need you to give me the hashes of the packages so I don't install something that's trojaned. I'm a computer programmer but I don't know much about phones, so please keep that in mind if you have special instructions. Thanks

@agenda21, Can you try this and let me know, this I found in my backup's. If it doesn't work, then I will build one using the old source and update it.

I raised a request in f-droid to restore the old version https://gitlab.com/fdroid/fdroiddata/issues/362 . Lets see.
