[Q] Q: Updating a ROM

If I want to update my MIUI rom, can I do it by only removing cache only or do I have to do the factory reset?

Only cache and dalvik cache (advanced-->clear dalvik cache) is needed. If you're running 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 it's a good idea to do a full wipe before upgrading to 2.3.5.
Remember next time that you only need to wipe the caches and simply flash the zip. Easy peasy!
- If you want to flash a new ROM, then you'll need to do a full wipe.
- If you only want to upgrade from 1.x to 2.x you only need to clear cache and dalvik.
- If you want to upgrade, but the upgrade includes jumping to a new version of Android (2.3.3->2.3.4->-2.3.5 etc.) then it's a good idea to do a full wipe. It's not needed, but again, it's a good idea.

i personaly never do a factory reset or full wipe unless its recommended by the DEV. this way all my settings and aps are saved and still in their respective spots when switching over. most of my experiences are trial and error based.
just remember always NAND backup before you do anything. its just a android life saver. this way if something doesnt workout you just go back and start over

Flashing a JB ROM

Hey, I'm currently on MIUI ics. I know I have to wipe/factory reset everything. But is it safe to flash on the current CWM? Or do I need to update it or something? Do I just flash the new JB rom like I would switching from MIUI to a stock ics rom? I'm a noob, sorry if this doesn't make sense.

What version of CWM are you running?
You should be fine, but it never hurts to check. You flash a JB rom just like any other. Wipe wipe wipe and flash.

The whole wipe wipe wipe is completely unnecessary. One wipe is sufficient and any additional won't do anything.
It's like saying that unless you wipe exactly 3 times the Android Gods are going to demand a human sacrifice for your phone to boot.

lol i think dvorak meant wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, wipe data (wipe wipe wipe) but that's my take..
anyway, if you can flash MIUI ICS with whatever CWM version you currently have, you should be able to flash other JB ROM. Nandroid as always.. Goodluck!

This is what I did :
1. Boot into recovery and perform a nandroid backup of my MIUI installation.
2. Wipe.
3. Flash XenonHD 9 JB ROM + marmite 4.2 kernel.
My phone is running really smooth now. Good luck.

Yep, that's it. Of course wiping everything 3 times would be unnecessary.

if you get a cluster f*#@ of problems then clean install. It isn't that hard. Use Titanium Backup and good to go.
In Recovery:
1. wipe data/factory reset (this formats /data, /cache and .android_secure on sd)
2. format /system, /boot
this leaves you with only bootloader, recovery and radio...dalvik-cache resides on /data, so it's gone already.
3. flash rom
4. gapps & custom-kernel (if needed). No need to let the phone boot & settle before flashing them (most custom-kernels have a script that automatically wipes /cache & dalvik during kernel-install)
5. reboot
6. Run TB -- restore missing apps with data --1st option under restore
just updating rom:
1. flash rom-zip
2. wipe /cache and dalvik-cache
3. reboot
Do this before reporting any issues on the thread since the problems are often related to this and not the ROM or kernel.

I have been ready to flash eos4 using twrp 2.3.2.3 and found the steps todo it and i have a couple of noob questions. The first question is after full wipe /factory reset then it says format system do i wipe system or use format data button? And i read if you format data you must reboot back into recovery.2nd question is if i install eos4 build #91 can i flash to build #176 next ?? Sorry for the noob ????but i dont want to brick the tablet

You do not need to format Data. This is rare. When flashing a different flavor of ROM, use the top 4 wipe buttons (cache, Davlik, factory, system)
When flashing between different versions of the same ROM, wipe Cache, Davlik and System (not Data).
Then flash the ROM, GAPPs and optional Kernel.

Clean flash without wiping userdata?

Hey guys!
I'm coming from a OP3T, my clean flash procedure consisted of wiping dalvik, system, data and cache, so that I didn't lose all userdata.
I'm looking at custom ROMs for the Pixel 4A, in all of the flashing instructions it says to do a Factory Reset from the recovery - which I assume also gets rid of all of the userdata?
If that's the case, is there any way to do a clean flash/try out a different ROM without having to wipe all /data/media?

There is no such thing as performing a clean flash without wiping the /data partition aka performing a factory reset
What you can do is taking a backup with Titanium or Migrate and then restore the backup in the new rom

Unable to wipe system partition on Redmi Note 9 Pro

Hi everybody!
I'm trying to wipe the system partition on my redmi note 9 pro to install a costum rom ( Pixel Experience).
However I'm just not able to do that because there just isn't the option: when I try to wipe all data there isn't the system partition.
I tried both with Twrp and Orange Fox.
the error I encounter is unable to update logical partition "/system_ext".
Do you know how to fix this? Fortunately my device still works, I managed not to brick it somehow. But I would really like to install the Pixel Experience

for what purpose do you want to wipe this partition?? there is no need to do that.
What should I wipe in TWRP?
If you are switching ROMs (changing from one ROM to a completely different one) then you should perform a factory reset. A factory reset wipes data and cache...

Actually he DO NEED to wipe system partition before installing a new system. And I got the same problem

No, you flash a complete image of /system and it doesn't matter if there is any data stored on it. Everything gets overwritten.

Yes, that's right. Just wipe /data when flashing a new ROM.
