Question Camera rotation lag - Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra
Hi there, I'm currently on S22 Ultra 8/128 (upgraded from note8).
Since I bought the phone, I noticed stock camera app is very laggy when I rotate the phone. I tried to figure it out and found that on the stock camera app, when I rotate the phone, not only the camera app but the whole UI rotates, and that creates the lag issue. You can try 2 methods to understand the issue.
1. Open the message chathead and open the camera. When you rotate the camera, the chathead will change its position from vertical side to horizontal side (depends which direction you rotate the phone). On note8, the system doesn't work like this. When you rotate the camera (with the rotation locked vertical), the chathead will stay on the vertical side.
//I just tested, even unlock the rotation, on note8, when open camera and rotate, the system still stay vertically, only function icons in camera app rotate.
2. You can open other camera apps like Instagram and rotate the phone, lag issue won't happen as the system still understand that the UI is vertical locked.
You can also see the green dot that notify the camera is using. When on stock camera app, when you rotate, the dot rotates/ changes its postion too. However, it doesn't when you use camera in Instagram or Facebook messenger.
The question is, is there anyway that we can lock the camera UI so that the phone UI will stay vertically whenever we rotate the camera?
Now, let me start by saying I have the 256 Snapdragon model, but on mine, I have no lag at all. When I rotate, the app actually does not rotate. The scene does and the icons on the screen rotate, but the app orientation actually stays the same. I do see the camera notification move as you noted.

I understand the orientation of the camera app stays the same. But all the back layer (the system UI) rotates when I rotate the phone. So it creates lag. You can see the videos below
Note8: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1D_7c3gBpkiF4DIZbUD54gwsGLGUGI57U/view?usp=sharing

S22u Instagram: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1x9jG5sNavpCXWDt4P6QzwqryFA1qJ3c0/view?usp=sharing
You can see on note8's video, when I rotate, the chat head still on the same position (vertical orientation) and no lag. But on s22u, when I rotate, the chathead (and notification bar) changes its position. You can also notice the lag when my cat ran down the stair at few last seconds of the video. However, on S22u instagram's camera, it works just like note8 camera's algorithm (chathead stays at the same position), so no lag.
Thus, it can imply that, on note 8 camera and s22u instagram camera, the system understands that the UI should be vertical locked when rotating the camera. However, on s22u stock camera, the system UI rotates whenever I rotates the camera.
So how can make the stock camera on S22u vertical locked or at least the whole UI vertical locked when in camera app? If we can make that happen, i think the camera lag issue on S22u will be eliminated.

OK, so when I use the camera and I rotate my phone, the UI does rotate, but there is no lag. When I make a video and change orientation the UI does not rotate and I have no lag in the video. I can upload a video that shows this. Like I said on my first post, I am on a 256 Snapdragon phone, so maybe the lack of memory is causing your issue. I have tried everything to replicate what you are talking about and cannot.

Have you tried let the chat bubble stay when using the camera?
No, I do not use chat bubbles. I have recorded video and rotated the phone and as I said, the UI does not rotate as it does in camera mode. The green indicator for the camera stays in the top right corner (essentially it is now in the top left corner) in video mode but moves to bottom right (essentually moving to the top right as it would be in portrait mode) in camera mode. Hope this makes since to you.
Also, there is no lag in the video at all as I rotate the phone while recording. The playback also has no lag in it.

Your idea about lack of ram may be true. I have no lag (or just a little) when rotate camera without chat bubble. But when the chat bubble comes up, the lag issue raises. It is samsung's (or google's) fault as when at the same situation, note8 (according to my clip) doesn't get any lag. I still think that the UI should stay vertical whenever the camera rotates to eliminate lag issue.
Bold: you can see the problem when you rotate the camera and go to camera setting. The setting UI will change from vertical to horizontal; and that implies the system UI rotates along with the camera. On note8, the camera's setting always in vertical even you rotate the camera. It is strange that camera in instagram, facebook messenger and other apps still work like note8's stock camera.

Camera Apps bug on Chacha (Camera360, Camera Effects) working only in portrait?
Hi guys, I'd like to underline a problem I have with some applications for camera, like Camera360, Camera Effects, Pudding Camera and so on. Even if I set the display to not rotating (in other words, always landscape), those apps when taking a photo take it in portrait mode, and I have to rotate them manually with another program. The strange thing is that while capturing the image is set in landscape mode (so I have the illusion that everything is working fine), but when saving the photo it is rotated by 90°, like it would have been taken in portrait. Do you know how to solve this problem? It is very uncomfortable to rotate manually every photo taken with those programs. Hope you the best, thank you! Marco
Screen Rotation Bug? / EMUI 4.0 / NXT-L09C636B170 / Android 6.0
Just got a new Mate 8 this week, and after not having a smart phone to use since 2010, I'm really liking what I'm seeing so far with my limited exposure . . . even fine with the stock EMUI interface too. One thing I noticed right away was the phone's inability to rotate a full 360°. Left and right horizontal rotation is fine, as well as the normal vertical, but try to go inverted, and the screen did not rotate at all for the home screen or for any app I tried. Funny, because I actually had a Chinese phone back in 2008 called an i9, which had the same rotation issue for only the inverted position. I tried turning auto rotation On and Off, rebooting, etc., but no help. I did not try any hard reset on the phone, but I did go to Google Play and installed a rotation app called Set Orientation. When running, using the app's Automatic (full) rotation setting, the phone now rotates properly to the inverted position on the home screen as well as the few apps I tried so far. This made me happy that the hardware doesn't seem to be the issue with it not rotating inverted. I did a forum search for rotation issues, and did not see any threads for this specific issue. So has anyone else had this partial rotation issue and maybe an easy fix for it? Also, I was wondering if there might be any downsides to having to always rely on an app like this, as maybe it won't always be compatible with other apps which may need to have the screen rotate to the inverted position? Thanks, ~ Craig ~
If I seem to remember correctly, even the 6p didn't rotate a full 360 degrees. I actually think it is app dependant. I use this rotation control.. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pranavpandey.rotation Sent from my HUAWEI NXT-L29 using Tapatalk

Click to collapse Yes, I'm already using a rotation control app that has worked to allow inverted vertical rotation too, but I'm wondering why you believe it's not a bug, but possibly only about app dependency if it does full 360° rotation ? I have to admit I haven't been too well up to date on Android devices and apps for at least 4 years now, and I know some apps want to prevent certain screen orientation settings, forcing the view in certain modes. However, it seems like some software setting is out of kilter, or even a bug to me for this particular partial rotation issue, not just about app dependency. For instance, why would the home screen, with auto rotation turned on in the settings, allow for rotation to both horizontal positions, the normal portrait position, but not allow for an inverted portrait rotation? Also, for even the internet browser apps, which from what I recall for several other Android tablets I owned years ago, they would all allow rotation to all screen positions for 360° when rotation was turned on, with this phone it wouldn't allow inverted portrait rotation, that is, not until I installed the Set Orientation app and used it. Do Chrome and Firefox for Android typically not allow for inverted portrait viewing unless forced by an orientation app or rooting the device to change system settings? I did find that using the Set Orientation app it interferes with the factory installed camera app display when using the phone in either horizontal position, so I need to disable it when using the camera to take landscape images. It isn't a huge issue, just a minor inconvenience (along with a couple others) which I came across but can certainly live with, because I'm really enjoying the phone so far for the most part. ~ Craig ~
Look at the phone/dialer App. I don't even think that allows any horizontal rotation or full rotation. Almost all lock screens on different phones don't allow rotation either unless you have a custom ROM installed. I just don't think it's a bug . I think it's done like that for a reason, good or bad. I think it may be a phone restriction because I think my Nexus 9 allows full rotation on some apps. You just might have to live with it. I think the home screen doesn't rotate 360 degrees because who views phone stuff upside down? For example, I had 360 rotation turned on for my phone/dialer app and if your laying down the App will go inverted . If the proximity sensor isn't quick enough and doesn't turn off your screen, you might hit the hangup button like I did one time. Look, Netflix is landscape only. Click to collapse On a device with small and relatively symmetrical bevels on the top and bottom like the Mate 8, or my previous LG G4, it's very handy to just pick up the phone and use it, irrelevant of the orientation. I never use the power button and/or fingerprint scanner so a simple double (or on the Mate 8 usually triple) tap wakes up the device and hey presto, use it as it is. Is it the "right way round"? Great. Was it upside down? Does not matter, use it like this for now as well. So for that reason I would also like to have an upside down possibility (haven't installed xposed yet as I find the need for it not great enough, for now). Other than that I find not a lot of real disadvantages of having the possibility anyway. Note: not all apps worked as planned upside down but the dialer, homescreen, browsing, etc. made no difference regarding holding the phone
Redmi note 4 (global) Camera issue
Hello. I hope u can help me, even if its not connected with xdadevelopers. When im recording video (with stock app or most of camera apps), its covered with some annoying and ugly pattern by dots (sometimes are blank, just outline or its purplish). When im taking photo, these dots arent visible, but when im using "a Better Camera"app, dots are visible in photo mode and not visible in video mode. I think its not HW problem because, they should be visible in every mode. My glass on camera is clean. When zooming, dots are bigger. Here is video taken via stock camera app. BTW using newest MIUI 9, even before it had same issue. youtube.com/watch?time_continue=0&v=A8h5Ig7y96M&ab_channel=EasyStreet
Unusable portrait mode on MIUI 10 Pie
Hi I am not aware whether you all are facing this issue. Portrait mode on Miui 10 Pie automatically uses the Telephoto, or the secondary lens by default and there is no way to change this. As a result the viewfinder automatically zooms the photo 1.5 to 2x and it becomes literally a mess of a portrait photo. I am wondering why is no one raising this issue. The camera sucks now. Does anyone have a workaround??
Am I missing the setting? Why aren't apps stretching to the camera hole?
Almost no app I have stretches over to the camera hole. It's like I have "hide camera hole" selected in settings (it's not). I've also forced full screen every app in Settings, which doesn't work either. I only had the Note 10+ for a week and sent it back as garbage, but I do remember apps using the whole screen to the camera hole. I also have a OnePlus 7 Pro with the same size screen and every app works natively without stretching or zooming. I think it's BS that Samsung is forcing apps to hide the camera hole unless we go to extremes like using ADB commands to use apps like "Immersive Mode Manager" or having to root our devices to achieve something that's native on other devices. The whole point of having a large screen is to be able to use the whole screen real-estate. Not be deliberately restricted. Is there an ADB command I can use to at least get my browser to go completely full screen past the camera hole? ***Edit to add*** I'm talking about landscape mode, not portrait. Turning "hide camera hole" on or off only affects apps in portrait mode. I'm trying to get apps to stretch through the camera in landscape mode. Which was possible on the Note 10+, so far not possible on the 20 Ultra.
