Question Google messages Beta lagging - Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

I am having serious lag with Google messages. I am on the latest beta. Anyone else experiencing this? Snapdragon s22 Ultra.

Hi, I use Google Messages, also on the beta. I've got lag on 1 set of messages which is with my wife. It takes a second or so for the previous messages to appear yet there's no issue with the Samsung Messages app (which I believe is a re-skin of Google Mesages?) I'm also on a Snapdragon S22 Ultra.

My issue is the single text all lag. Individual Text with son, daughter and wife all lag The group texts does not lag at all.

I'm having the same issue. Only on single text threads. Group threads are fine.

Anyway to fix this? Or need to wait for update on Google messages.

what version of the app are you guys on? Go into settings, apps, messages, and post the version number.
I will also confirm the latest version of the non-beta is also lagging.

the issue seems to be with the samsung version of google messages (go figure). Go into Apps, messages, click the 3 dots on the top right and select uninstall updates.
Then go to apkmirror, search for google messages. Select the latest version and when you select your download make sure to not select the one that has samsung in the name. It would be similar to this:
NO - messages.android_20220406_05_RC00.phone_samsung_dynamic
YES - messages.android_20220406_05_RC00.phone_openbeta_dynamic
I just tried the openbeta version and so far no lag, plus the annoying MESSAGES text that took up unecessary space is gone from the main screen

Oh and make sure after doing this to go into Play store and uncheck auto-updates for google messages. Otherwise it will install the laggy samsung version again

I am on a carrier locked phone. This is the one I am on. I did ever6u said and mine still lags. Even when I uninstalled updates it still lags.

Just as a matter of interest, I deleted the updates for the Google Messages app (not the Samsung skinned one, but still the Samsung specific one) and even though the updates have reapplied, my lag seems to have gone...

[Q] How to change the default SMS app to ChompSMS?

I've installed ChompSMS, but when I go into Settings - Wireless & Networks - Default SMS app - only Hangouts is listed. I've tried rebooting the phone, but still nothing. Does ChompSMS need to be updated so it'll show up on this list? Is there another way to make it the default app?
Thanks!

What he said lol.
There are particular parameters that an app has to have in 4.4 for Hangouts to recognise it as an SMS app.
What the others said.
Long-winded answer:
Basically, before 4.4, there was no such thing as an "SMS app" on Android. Apps like ChompSMS didn't actually directly receive and process SMSes. They listened for SMS received events and intercepted the SMS message as it went into the default SMS app. This was an incredibly hacky method, would cause weird issues (like you'd get notifications from two SMS apps), and wasn't at all supported officially by Google.
Now in 4.4, they added the ability for apps to act as proper replacements for SMS. But they must stop using the old APIs/intents and use the new 4.4 APIs to do this. If/when the app developer does this, then you'll see it as an option.
I have the same issue you too and have been unable to find any SMS 'app' that can be set as the default.... Anyone have any success?
I've tried - Chomp, Now and Textra and none are 'selectable'!
Thanks.

Tried those and 8sms. No joy ;(
Handcent works
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
This is what you need:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2512414&page=3
Works flawlessly.
I emailed the developer last week and got a reply to say a fixed version would be out this week. It's not out at the time of writing this post, but on the Google Play website someone gave it a 1 star review for not working on the Nexus 5 and one of the devs replied to say "It's fixed. Please email us with the subject line NOT FAQ." Maybe they are sending people an APK if they email them?

8sms absolutely does work, make sure you have the most updated version from the Play Store and then go to Settings>More... (under Wireless & Networks), then tap Default SMS app and change to 'Messaging', which is 8sms. Could not recommend this app higher.
I just got a reply from the developer. They are supposedly releasing a version that's compatible with the Nexus 5/Android 4.4 today. They also linked me to a beta version that works, although I haven't tested it: -

Thanks for the link! Working great on my Nexus 5 now. This is version 5.89, the version on the Play Store was released Nov 12 and is v5.88.
Chomp user here too, though when I installed the beta it didn't seem to have notifications turned on by default, so I missed a few texts. Worth checking if you install it.
Version 5.89 has been released to the Play Store, has KitKat compatibility.

Duplicate numbers in dialer

Hello everyone,
I am running a stock rom on my GS6 and since yesterday, when I had to call someone I noticed that I have duplicate phone numbers for each contact, but only when I type a contact's name using the T9 function of dialer. If I go to contacts, everything is fine.
I noticed that the issue is solved after uninstalling whatsapp. When I reinstalled whatsapp from the play store, it installed version 2.12.176, but I instantly got the update for 2.12.242 which was the version I had before. The issue came back after 30 minutes of use...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had that problem also but because of another app, you need to not sync the app with your contacts. I was able to unsync the contacts from my app. Try going into settings, accounts and see if you can set it to not sync or maybe in the app unsync your contacts.
I don't have this whatsapp contact sync problem, but i had duplicate contacts. Did you try to "merge contacts" from the menu in the contacts app? For me this worked

the problem is that contacts don't show the duplicate numbers, it's just from whatsapp/other app that is giving this problem.
I have the same problem on my Galaxy s6... Any fix?
Yes i have this problem. Any Fix??
Hello I have the exact same problem. But a lot of people that have the S6 (95%) doesn't have this issue.
Maybe we have a contact problem in our Google account?
I'm thinking of deleting and retyping all of them bit it's annoying...
Should I give a try? I need WhatsApp so much but this double number issue is very frustrating at the same time....
Okey, so I had the exact same problem and I think I might have found a way to fix this. The problem is it's contact by contact and not bulk.
1. Go to your contacts in your S6. Search for a contact that you know have duplicate numbers in the dialer.
2. You will now see that there is just one number added to the contact.
3. Click the "show more" link in the bottom of the contact card (above your recent activity)
4. This expanded view now shows you more contact info. Look for the "Connected by" field with a link symbol on the right.
5. This field will show you what services link contact info to this contact. Click it and press the "-" by the connected app to split it from this contact.
6. Now if you search for this contact again you will find two contacts. The original one and the one you just broke free.
7. Click the unwanted one and press "more" in the top right and select "delete". It will warn you that you cant delete read only stuff but proceed anyway.
8. Voila! Now you don't have duplicate numbers in your dialer.
As I said this is a bit tedious, but it works. I have done it to my most frequent contacts and thats good enough for now. There is an option in the contact app where you can choose what sources to show in your contacts but that doesn't seem to work or doesn't apply to the dialer.
Hope this helps
.- Alex
Thanks for the help Bathyon I'll try this when I get back from work!!! I'll let you know.
This problem is not restricted to only the S6. I have the exact same problem on my Galaxy S4 mini Duos
I'm having the same problem with my Moto X (1st Gen). :/

Working ! ! ! ! Thank you very much ! You're a hero ! WhatsApp settings doesn't ask you if you want or not the app to mix up with your Google contacts. You found the solution to "separate" them without having twice the same contact anymore !
Thanks again !

Glad I could help. It was driving me mad so I'm as happy as you are
I don't think it's the proper solution. The apps need to fix the problem. I'm having the same problem on S5 too
Also having this problem. With the latest Whatsapp Beta. I will try seperating them.
For those who are still annoyed by this problem, I've found a more elegant solution - yet still somewhat of a hack. Unfortunately, root is required until marshmallow hits our devices:
1) Uninstall Whatsapp from your device
2) Install "App Ops" by nowsky from the Play Store
3) Reinstall Whatsapp (but do not yet open it)
4) Open up App Ops
5) Scroll down to Whatsapp in any of the categories (e.g. location)
6) Press on Whatsapp and untick its ability to "modify contacts"
7) Open and configure Whatsapp normally
Henceforth, Whatsapp won't be able to create duplicate numbers or entries. This solution does not seem to have any detrimental effect on Whatsapp itself. All Whatsapp capable contacts are properly displayed, there are no error messages and what have you.

Strange ads in messaging thread

Hello,
After having been away form Android for awhile i just switched to the Note 8. I've only had the phone a few days but I've noticed an odd issue and was hoping someone could help because my web searches aren't finding much.
Every so often when i send a text message it is followed by an ad. On screen it looks like like a web preview (sort of like when you text a link to someone, that little preview of the page you sent). At first i thought that i had somehow linked something to someone by accident.
It appears on screen exactly like i was the one who sent it. Also, the ad shares the same time stamp as the text i actually did send. The people I'm texting don't appear to be able to see them though.
I've not downloaded anything that i can think of that would be at all sketchy, so im not sure what gives. Ive tried to search for mention of this from others but web searches related to text come up with all manner of things. If anyone has seen this before or has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks very much
So you must have something thing sketchy downloaded.
Did you get the AT&T phone from AT&T or Samsung? Are you using it on AT&T network or do you use a 3rd party carrier?
There are only a few things that could be doing this.
1.) you downloaded a sketchy app and gave it permission to see/use messages and or contacts
2.) you are using a 3rd party messaging apps without realizing it
3.) you are using an off brand carrier that is pushing ads to your phone through one of there apps.
I'd start with seeing what apps have access to your messages, Even system apps, in your app permission settings. If you see something sketchy with access turn off that permission
If you are using a 3rd party carrier then you may have to try to find the app they are using to push ads and use "BK Disabler" to block it.

I was getting this too. I think I have tracked it down to AT&T Messages Backup & Sync. I believe they are using it kind of like someone doing a MITM attack. believe this because if I wipe all my messages and restore from Samsung backup (with affected message included) the message is not there. If I restore just based solely on the AT&T Messages Backup & Sync backup, then it is there.

Use hangouts or Allo or Signal messenger instead of the ATT messaging app and sync you contacts to Google.
No need to use ATT apps at all.
I just bought the Note 8 and the first time I opened the Messages app it asked if I wanted to turn web previews on. You may have said yes to that and maybe that is what you are seeing. Go to Messages, Settings, More Settings, and then see if Web Preview is enabled.

Why is Play Store Installed Google Phone (dialer) app not recognized as an available dialer, despite all permissions granted, set as default dialer?

Hello,
I've tried to fix this problem for months - it makes using my phone as a phone very painful. I've reached out to Google via the app's feedback, have posted multiple Play Store reviews, have posted in the Google Community Support forum but no one will even acknowledge my posts. DRIVING ME INSANE.
I am trying to use the latest Google "Phone" Android dialer app (version 63.0.364655934 - though every single version has always had this same issue). The app was installed via the Play Store. All permissions have been granted. The app is set as the default dialer as well. I can open the app and dial a number, and incoming calls are working fine. The problem I'm experiencing: if I attempt to make a phone call from any other app, the Google "Phone" app is not listed as an installed dialer in the Android call/dialer intent received list of available dialer options. The default (Samsung) dialer is listed, as well as others (such as Skype for example), but not the blue Google "Phone" app. If I am texting someone in the Google "Messages" app and decide I would like to call that contact, when I touch the call icon the "Complete Using" Android dialer selection menu pops up (the one where you can choose which app you would like to use to complete the action, and whether you want to "Always" use that app or "Just Once") but the Google "Phone" app is not an available option, despite having all permissions granted and being set as the default dialer. This is extremely annoying and drives me crazy all day long and makes it very difficult to use my phone. If I ask Google Assistant to call someone, GA attempts to do so and that dialer selection menu pops up and nothing happens/GA cannot place the call because the Google Phone app is not listed as an option. I cannot make calls from the Google "Contacts" app. I cannot make calls whenever I select a phone number from a website in Google Chrome. It is extremely frustrating. I have sent feedback via the app multiple times, have written multiple reviews on the Google Play store and was told by the developer that my phone needed to have a good signal in order to be able to make calls and that I should submit feedback via the app, despite having clearly stated in my review that I had already submitted feedback multiple times. My phone has perfect signal - that has nothing to do with anything...
I believe it is the result of poor coding in the app's Android manifest / intent settings, and/or perhaps it could be that something conflicts with Samsung's proprietary Android software on my phone. My phone is one of the most common phones out there, and was one of the top selling phones last year in the United States: Samsung Galaxy A10e, on Verizon Wireless. Device software up to date, not rooted (because it's not possible for US Samsung devices to be rooted, unfortunately).
When I look at the App's enabled permissions and services, one permission seems to be disabled, and three services are listed as disabled, despite all permissions being granted in the Phone app's app/permission settings in the main Android Settings menu. Screenshots with more details attached.
Please help - thank you!

I'm on Verizon. It's so weird/dumb/annoying! I can't even ask Google Assistant to make a call, or open a contact in the Google Contacts app and then make a call, or click on a contact in the Google Messages app and tap the call icon. All I get is the pop-up menu that shows the disabled/not default Samsung dialer app (green) and Skype Lite, despite all permissions being granted and the Google Phone app being set as the default dialer app. I've tried the beta version as well and it's the same.
I'm constantly having to copy and paste or physically write down numbers because the stupid phone won't function as a phone and Google Support is non-existent and makes me want to chop my head off.

Unfortunately there's no way to uninstall any updates in the Google phone app, only uninstall the entire Google phone app altogether. Nor can I uninstall any updates for the built-in Samsung dialer app and I can't even disable the app as an app. :-(
I honestly think it's either poor coding on Google's behalf, or Samsung's locked-down / proprietary / Touchwiz crap being all finicky and annoying, or a combination of both. It's so dumb that I can't even use the Google Contacts app to dial a phone number or have Google Assistant place a phone call... with the Google dialer app... lol...
I really need to be able to make damn phone calls without having to copy and paste the number every ****inggggy time. This is absurd. Can someone please help or advise? There's no such thing as Google ****ing support. Their forums are pointless.

They both have the same icon and I can't seem to find any installed apps that would mimic facebook and no second facebook in the app drawer. Is this a bug or is this something trying to trick me into opening a fake app? Is there any way to figure out what app this is without resetting the phone?
This is a tmobile note 20 5g running android 11 if that makes a difference.
Additional info. My note 9 that I use as a backup is doing the same thing and I haven't installed anything on it or used it for anything other then phone calls I'm months.
