Question Is there a way to make the Spen register as a stylus in any app? - Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

I know that the Spen only works on specific apps and specific things but I am wanting to use it as a basic stylus as well. like for example i want to play pokemon go but with a stylus for general navigation and throwing of pokeballs (i know pokemon go is a bad example as there is likely overlay restrictions on that one but yeah) but when i try to use it in the game it just shows the little pointer and that is it. it does not register touches. is there a way to make it so it will register touches like a standard finger/stylus?

Pretty sure the dev would have to do something on their end to register imput from the Wacom digitizer.

Pokemon go SPECIFICALLY blocks it on purpose. They will NOT change according to their developers. Supposedly gives unfair accuracy.

I understand that. I was just using it as an example. There is a bunch of other games that do not function with the pen, nier reincarnation, final fantasy, magic the gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh master duel, etc.

Maybe same reasoning?

I doubt it. None of those secondary examples rely on accuracy.
I guess it's a proprietary thing that app developers would have to add into each app. I was just hoping someone would of figured out a work around or something

I think it's exactly the opposite. Its enabled on apps by default, even really old ones that haven't been updated in years. I believe I read you have to specifically BLOCK it if you don't want your app to use it.

I just came here to say that there has been a miracle and the spen now works in Pokemon Go! Not sure when it happened but I tried it again today without thinking and it worked!!

That's good to hear.
To your original post. There are apps that are customized to recognize the S Pen's full capabilities. But any app should allow you to use it as a basic "dumb" stylus. It would be no different (or shouldn't) than using your finger or one of those $5 styli that see near the registers at Office Max or Staples.

Just updated to 1.5

After a lot of trepidation, I finally rooted and upgraded to JF1.5. I really have to thank all the people who have spent sooooo much time discovering and documenting this.
I did a lot of reading before I upgraded. I finally used http://code.google.com/p/android-roms/wiki/TableOfContents , because it's excellently documented and has all the files I need in one place. Thanks Jon Pezz!
I do have some questions and observations
1. I can't seem to get telnetd working after upgrading to JF1.5. I read posts about it being broken in an earlier release, but being subsequently fixed. Is this broken or intentionally turned off? I love the G1 for the physical keyboard, but it's a poor country cousin to my IBM Model M keyboard And I'd rather use my PC for typing any day.
2. One of the best devices I have owned is the Sharp Zaurus. It wasn't a phone, but it was a great Wifi Device. It was Linux too and I could control it completely. I'm surprised that Google is making us jump through hoops to get root access. Also, I don't see samba, vnc server, vpn etc. yet. Some work around, some in progress, but surprisingly not the real thing.
3. I was completely underwhelmed by the multi-touch in the browser. It's performing so poorly, initially I thought it wasn't working at all. It works really well on the iPhone, but on the G1 it's very unresponsive. I tried unchecking "Fit to page", although I think that's so incredibly useful for browsing on mobile devices - in fact, one of the reasons why I think this is a better browser than the one on the iPhone. So maybe it's not really ready for prime time. I found it much faster to use the single touch zooming.
4. While I really like the physical keyboard, like everybody, the soft keyboard is very handy for typing a few letters. But in the two places where I really find myself needing one, it doesn't work - quickly filtering contacts and and in the App drawer to select an app. In the case of contacts, you have to open the menu, select search, click on the text field and then start typing. It's faster to just flip out the physical keyboard. In the Apps drawer, it doesn't work at all. It would be useful to add a button combo that would popup the soft keyboard.
Also, I see a lot of people asking for the HTC T9 keyboard for contacts. You might want to check out SpellDial in the Market. Works really well.

I'm not. Root access would wreak havoc on 95% of G1 owners seeing they are oblivious to the phones capabilities and just use it as a phone. Can you imagine the damage some rouge/malicious app on the Market could cause? There isn't a chance in hell Google could pull it fast enough.

If I'm not mistaken i believe telnetd was disabled b/c of security reasons.
Just imagine if while using a wifi network someone else gained root access of your phone. Not a cool risk worth taking.

The way it is currently set with no password, maybe. But if while registering for Gmail, it used the same password for root (or provided advanced users with an ability to use a different password for the phone), would that still be a security issue?

Again, isn't this because of the fact that root has no password (or has a fixed password)? Wouldn't this be like any other linux box if there were a user password. From my light browsing on the subject, doesn't look like anyone's got sshd running on the G1 either.

you can filter contacts with the virtual keyboard. Hit menu then hit search then start typing with the virtual keyboard.

Android Market is Horrible

As a new Asus Transformer owner and first time Android Market customer I have to say that I am utterly disappointed with the current state of the Android Market. The android market ap is a joke. The website is a little better, but desperately needs a better way to filer aps by tablet/non-tablet or hd/sd aps.
There is no legitimate reason that the market couldn't have a specific section dedicated solely to tablets. Or at least better filter/sort functions that allow you to filter in a more effective way. I was going to post a list of what is bad about the marketplace, but there is just too much. I'm sure that everyone who owns a honeycomb tablet is well familiar with the problem(s) by now. Anyway, just wanted to vent. /rant
Use appbrain (google it), it's much nicer and lets you filter your search.
see here for compatible tablet apps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032381

There actually sholdnt be a tabletsection at all. If a dev programs oroperly their app will work fine on any size screen. Thats the benefit of the way the xml layout in the sdk work. Locations all become relative. You say x is next to y andbelow z. Then let the device sort it out.

Not necessarily true, especially as Honeycomb introduces new layout elements that many app developers want to and should take advantage of to make their apps more tablet friendly. It might still all end up in the same APK in the end, but the developer still should do some tablet specific work to make it more user friendly. It would still be nice to know which APKs have been "tablet-optimized".
They do have a "Featured Tablet Apps" section, which as far as I can tell is just a list of all/most of the APKs that have been optimized for tablets.
I thought some of these issues were fixed with 3.1 according to xoom owners.
I think it's because they don't want people to see how few apps there are optimised for tablets.

I agree
There should be a tablet filter. Even amazon apps suck at it. I download some apps and it FC on me.
You say all apps should work on tablet? Well that's not the case for many apps so there should be some kind of distinction. But, I hear some problems will be fixed in 3.1.
The pop down add won't be popping down anymore, it will just be there when you open it up, more catagories, and when you view an app and go back, it suppose to remember your location.
Be nice to be able to add reviews, but I didn't hear anything about that.
as a poor uesr from china pr
i need an app like market access lol
No no no... there is nothing about an Android app that says "I'm a tablet app" unless it just happens to be written for _only_ the Gingerbread API level (and that will be false the second the next version of Android comes out) which is pretty bad practice.
Using 3.0 classes is possible via reflection while remaining compatible back to 1.6, given that you can have a specific layout for x-large screens you can use 3.0 layout elements there even if your app targets a lower API level. Fragments are available all the way back to 1.6 now.
There is no "Tablet version" switch to detect, nor should there be.
It is up to the devs themselves to support the use cases they want to target, not specific devices, with freedom comes responsibility.
there should't be a tablet filter..android is different from iOS in terms of the layout design and ideally all apps should just run just fine on hc.
I remember reading that Google were going to put extra layers/levels into the current market to provide better touch browse/navigation - which might be nice.
But I don't really have any problems with the current one and the other sites do a good job at simplifying searches anyway.
It will never please everybody, but will continue to get better I am sure.

It's not whether or not they run fine, it's whether or not they are optimized for a tablet, like the CNN app. So I agree, a filter for apps that are tablet-optimized is a must. Until then, I just rely on the Featured Tablet Apps to see if anything new has been added.

yes ideally they should, but theyre phone apps. When they do work correctly, they just stretch. Everybody makes of the ipad saying its a giant ipod touch, but the apps that are optimized for it look amazing. So yes there should be a tablet filter.

[Q] First Tablet - Where to Start?

Hi all
just got a shield tablet. first time with Android. Got it for portable gaming, and to explore the many possible ways it could be of use in my life. it seems like an endless horizon.
used Windows and mac OS a fair bit, i like tinkering. but this is new.
iv been exploring structure, it seems to be very open.
Iv been looking around for guides and tutorials for Android, but most seem to be centered toward smartphone users. many of the Apps they suggest seem to be optimized for phones and seems a bit naff on tablet.
on top of that, i'm starting out with Lollipop, which has made it trickier to find applicable tutorials.
I would be grateful if anyone could point me towards an Android/lollipop tutorial geared toward Tablets.
many thanks
pw
Not sure what you mean by tutorials. You should just play around with the settings, see what features the tab has. Try out the default apps installed etc. The stylus is pretty fun to use with the Nvidia Dabbler app. Other than that, try connecting an Xbox controller to it using a USB OTG cable. Works pretty well. Connect it to the TV and try out console mode(I still haven't done that ?)
Setup your Gmail account, since that is central to keeping everything synced on your tab. Email, contacts, photos, etc. It is also required for access to the play store, where you can download apps, games, movies and music.
Other than that I generally do the following with all my devices -
1) Root it - Rooting is just getting superuser permissions for your device(which I personally believe should ideally just be a setting which the user can decide to turn on/off). This allows you to backup/restore your app data, uninstall system apps that you don't need, tweak/add certain features (though xposed is not yet working on Lollipop I think), block annoying ads, etc.
2) Install Titanium Backup and restore my data from my previous/other device. A lot of apps still don't have cloud syncing, so you still have to transfer your data. But since this is your first device, you don't really have to worry about this.
I'd suggest posting specific questions about stuff that you'd like to know, as it will be easier for people to help you.

Couple of app suggestions for you to try -
Nova/Apex Launcher - Has lots of added features, like organizing the app list, swipe gesture shortcuts, customizable icons, etc.
Bring! - Really good shared grocery list.
MX Player - Plays almost all formats. And has swipe gestures for playback and volume/brightness controls. Pretty awesome.
Feedly - Get your dose of the latest news
Soundhound - Great at identifying a song playing on the radio or even one that you're humming!

I'm not sure what you want either
If you have a keyboard you can activate Improved accessibility to reassign some keys.
I have Siderbar Pro, so i can swap and open apps has i want.
Adaptative rotation lock free, i use it to force app to open in landscape mode, useful if you have your tablet in a case keyboard.
Floathing Stickies, i use it to write my ideas while I'm reading or browsing, is a floathing resizable window.
Darker, to low the screen brightness and use a color filter.
Ingles(i speak Spanish), i guess you could find it like English is a Livio english dictionary.
WPS its a word, excel PowerPoint PDF editor.
Ivona Text to speech, is the best i have found
Mouse keyboard 2 touch free, i use it to emulate keyboard keypress as touch points, useful to play with a keyboard, but it didn't reconogize my mouse USB or wireless. I had tried other alternatives but this is which works best. Need root permissions.
Thumb Keyboard, is a very customizable keyboard but it seems that it doesn't have further support.
As you can see there are no limits, but has i said i don't know but you want.
I'm with the people who say explore every aspect of the tablet from start to end. Tapping just about anything in some of the most central screens yields interesting results.
From there you'll just sort of have to decide what you want to explore... the Play Store is still a great place to find apps that do a whole lot of things. Do you, like me, want your phone to be kinda like your desktop? There are office suites and sliding keyboards and a whole lot of apps with cloud functionally and desktop like power under the hood.
Oh, about those keyboards... the Google one treats gliding with extreme respect. Would recommend using it like that, maybe trying Swype or SwiftKey if you want to see what else is out there. Heck, even gestures like sliding from Shift to G or just holding down the shift key work kind of in ways you'd expect.
But that's just me... Android can go in a thousand directions. Maybe one day I'll make a YouTube channel called Android is Awesome and show why.
Like most members said, ROOOT IT. Then your endless horizon will be more like space exploration. Once you root, you can ask those questions on what an android can really do. Using a Nvidia shield too, and theres a lot of bloatware that you probably don't want. If you want to uninstall those, you'll need root! If you want to maximize your tegra k1, you'll need root!

[App][4.3+] Sesame Lock Screen / App Switcher: quick launch everything!

Howdy. My friend Steve and I made Sesame so we wouldn’t have to swipe around looking for things anymore.
It puts your favorite apps in a ranked list on the lock screen along with a keyboard that can filter to pretty much anything in 1 or 2 touches. What’s cool about Sesame is that it learns from your behavior and makes new shortcuts deep into native apps.
This thing is like a power tool for Android. It takes some getting used to but it’s worth it.
Shortcuts it makes today
All your apps (ranked by how often you use them)
All contacts w/ 1 touch to text, call, or email (WhatsApp too!)
Websites you visit (but not when browsing incognito)
Music library and new stuff you listen to (Spotify only atm but expanding soon)
You can Quick Search: Maps, Waze, Netflix, Spotify, Google Music, Chrome, Play Store, Yelp and YouTube
It makes shortcuts back to your searches
Hangouts conversations, including groups
Alarms you set
Uber/Lyft see live ride options w/ ETA & Surge Pricing
Smart Keyboard
The keyboard is designed to pull things up fast. It’s not swipe, it’s faster. You don’t need to type full words. It understands shorthand, so if I want to play music by Ratatat I can type ’S’ for Spotify then ‘R’ and 'Spotify: Ratatat' will come right up. It also learns from your choices so next time only ’S’ might get the job done.
Lock Screen and/or App Switcher
The Lock Screen version displays your notifications and keeps your existing security 100% intact. Note: some device types see display issues when transitioning from Sesame to the system lock screen. If that happens, you can still use it as an app switcher.
There’s no registration and none of the data leaves your device.
It’s still got some rough edges. If you do try it, give it a shot for a few days. Our test users said it took some getting used to but they’d never go back now. We try to get out 2-3 new versions a week. So please give feedback, we want to make it better!
It’s free in the play store, check it out!
Will take it for a spin and give feedback later. thanks.

So far so good. I think it's a great idea, and you made the idea into a fantastic app, but I for myself noticed that I hardly launch apps or anything from the lock screen, since I automatically unlock my phone with the fingerprint.

What if you could launch it by swiping from the edge of the screen? I'm thinking the upper right edge is easily reachable and out of the way. You could swipe and pull down to pull Sesame up right away.
Lots of people just aren't interested in changing their lock screen but I do think there's some potential here. Thanks!

That sounds good, however, maybe you could give the option to choose from where to swipe, upper right is for me a no go, since I've got a six inch Huawei Mate 8, it would still be reachable but not convenient.

Roger. That can be done.
I think we're going to try to make the Lock Screen pretty first. Something like this.
There are lock screen apps w/ 50MM users that are basically rotating pretty pictures. They get around all the lock screen compatibility problems by building their own security then having the user turn off the system one. This isn't 100% secure, which is why we didn't go that way. But it'd keep out anyone except a motivated hacker. And if the system security is OFF we can build a seamless experience. So maybe that'd open Sesame up to a wider audience. It'd be totally optional, you could still keep the system security if you wanted.
Thanks for the feedback. It def moves our thinking. Let me know if there's anything else we can improve.

Yes, I understand, but you are right you are not going to get the audience you want.
Take for example hilocker I've been watching the locker growing but then it grew slower and slower. however it was not only the app which wasn't always running smoothly, but also the little to non response of the dev.
The features however integrated are great.
Giving the user the option to decide to keep security or to have a better experience at the cost of some security, is a good idea.

Alternative input option for large screen phones ( Instead of touch screen )

Hello
I have been using large screen phones for a while now. I was just wondering if there were any workarounds for one handed use. I have done some research and I am aware of features such as shrinking the screen towards a corner so that all usable area is within reach of one hand. However that defeats the purpose of a large screen phone. I have some ideas about how to go about it and was wondering if anyone knows an app similar to what I've mentioned.
1) Use a virtual joystick. Similar to that Pie Control / Simple pie app, a small Virtual joystick area could pop out from the edge and you can use that joystick/trackpad to control a cursor around the screen. Obviously not for typing, but good enough to click things online. If you try searching for this, the results are flooded by apps that make your phone a touchpad/trackpad for a COMPUTER, or about a million physical joysticks available for gaming on Android.
2) Use the fingerprint sensor to move a cursor around the screen. My old Nexus 6p had an option to swipe down on the fingerprint print to bring down the notification bar. Maybe that same control can work for moving a cursor. Although I'm not sure that it would have enough movement sensing resolution to pull it off.
3) buying an actual physical joystick to move a cursor around the screen. Although currently they work only in a game. You'd need an app or framework to make this work I think.
I would really appreciate it if anyone knows whether such apps exist, or any other apps that help lazy people navigate their giant phones with one hand.

It probably wouldn't be that hard to take one of the apps that allows using your phone as mouse/trackpad for a PC and modify that app to shrink the trackpad area to the size you want and place it where you want on the screen, then modify it so that the app interfaces with your phone's screen and controls internally the same as an external mouse would instead of interfacing with your PC's display and controls over a network. You could make it work by using a double tap or a single tap to the edge or corner of your screen to bring up the trackpad so you can move the cursor wherever you need on the screen and make selections, you could even make it semi/full transparent and overlay whatever is on screen.
But, if you'd rather try piecing something together with existing apps.
The first question I would ask is, do you have a rooted device?
If not, would you be willing to root the device if the method exists for your device?
Some of the tricks you can use to achieve your goal might require root access. Even if possibly only long enough to make the modifications you want and then remove root after you're done as long as what you set up does not require continued root access.

Well what you said about modifying a PC trackpad app for this purpose makes sense. However I have only made some rudimentary Android apps in the past. I don't have nearly enough experience to try what you have mentioned.
My current main device is pretty new and isn't rooted right now, although I have rooted all my past ones. I am of course open to rooting it if there is an existing root app that can do the trick. Did you have any in mind?

That's the device name, not the device model number. Go to system settings>about phone>model number or system settings>about phone>hardware info>model number and tell me the model.
It should be A6000 or A6003, it might make a difference in what you need to root the device.
Both of the devices you own have known rooting methods.

Once you've done that, then it's down to trying various apps that offer features that can make getting to anything/everything on the phone more convenient for one handed use.
It's hard to give any suggestions to try because some will have features you're looking for but will be missing some that you want, it might come down to using multiple apps to setup all of your controls and features the way you want, some of them require root, some don't, the most effective ones use root. You can also take a look at using the Xposed Framework on your device, it has tons of modules that customize access, placement, appearance and function of various features and apps on the device.
