Update for my LG velvet 5g LM-G900 - LG Velvet Questions & Answers

I have a AT&T LG Velvet 5g LM-G900um unlocked phone but I am on T-Mobile network. Is there anyway to get updates ? Im still on Android 10.

I'm using the LM-G900VM on visible and still running 10 as well. Would love to get 11 or even 12

Buy an at&t prepaid sim card at walmart . register your prepaid Sim card . when you get to the part of buying a prepaid plan .Do not buy any plans just wait until you see the at&t logo on your notification bar. Now go to your phone settings >about phone>software update>update now. You need to keep updating until you download the latest version available.

I recommend you stay on 10. CPU cycle sucking, app killing scoped storage and forced encryption are not fully active. 11 and especially 12 will slow performance.
I have 2 Note 10+'s, one running on 9, the newest on 10. I may upgrade the 9 to 10 but both run well. 10 kills some app functionality present in 9.
Security is not an issue even with 9. The current load on the Pie variant will be 2 yo in June, still fast and stable with minimal maintenance. It's a heavily used device... what's not to like?

I've been trying so I can convert my MetroPCS one to T-Mobile. I've been checking daily for an update.
Got a T-Mobile link. Enjoy.

How do you convert it from MetroPCS to T-Mobile and what are the benefits?
Reason I'm asking is I am looking to pick this phone up this weekend.
Thanks

It's actually pretty easy.
Wipe your device first to ensure there aren't any compatibility issues.
Then make sure you have LG USB drivers installed, and download the firmware I posted as well as this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/how-to/guide-patch-lgup-to-unlock-features-t3652222
Run the LG UP in there and select "Partition DL." Select the T-Mobile firmware to the file path area, and put the phone into download mode. Flash the phone. Once that is done, then boot your phone and wipe it once you're at the home screen. If you see that the available storage is something weird (like a negative number or only 8GB) then load the LG UP again, boot the phone into DL mode and then select "Refurbish" and load the T-Mobile firmware again. Once it boots, do a wipe from the phone, and you should be all set.
Also, if you get hit with the secure start up password, just put random characters in 30 times to wipe the phone clean. The tries have to be more than a few characters to register so keep that in mind.
Note: I have no idea how this will affect OTAs. If anyone has an idea, please let us know.
No benefits to flashing, I just have a T-Mobile SIM and like when it meshes up. It looks like the MA and TA versions of the phone get updated at the same time anyway.
Update: I got the latest update OTA from T-Mobile. The Q7 is now on September 1, 2018 security.
Benefits
So is there any benefits to switching to the T-Mobile version? I just swapped from Sprint to MetroPCs and went with Q7+
Edit: er, nevermind... I just saw someone's explanation above abt having a SIM. Don't see a delete option
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yeah, why? I got a Q7 from Metro ~3 wk ago and am really happy with the upgrade from my Aristo. (Except there seems to be no option to root yet, which, I admit, is a big one)
What would be the advantage of converting it to T-Mob? Personally I got kinda mad @ T-Mob's financing setup & I like the Metro benefits like G1 & Prime. It took a little effort to get the Q7 deal since T-Mob owns Metro, but it can be done
I think I found a benefit but not 100%. The metro version has widevine l3 which prevents from streaming in hd quality on anything such as Netflix. From what I heard this is purely software and the TMobile one allows it, would.be great if one of you that flashed can confirm. This app will tell you https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo
I wait on a reply to this as well. He'll im considering opening app on demo phone at tmobile lol
So I have successfully installed Tmobile
Firmware in my metro pcs Q7+ and it runs alot smoother and more responsive without all of the bloatware. Alot happier with phone now buy widevine is still Version 3. From what i know LG would of had to jump thru more hoops to certify a better encryption before they could even entertain the idea of vs one
I have a T-Mobile Q7+ and it also is widevine l3.
It's security update time for the LG Q7+. Now I'm supposing it's for metro which service I use but recently flashed a T-Mobile firmware which is why I have the message from TMobile
bought Chinese version of the OnePlus 7 on Amazon with the GM 57aa firmware
is GM 57aa firmware compatible with visible Mobile in the USA? I bought a Chinese version of the OnePlus 7 on Amazon and it has the GM 57 AA firmware flashed on it. Is it compatible with visible Mobile in the USA? I know compatibility for visible was on 9.5.8 on the pro. Did the apns make their way to the 9.5.8 oneplus 7 gm57aa source code?
I am using the same phone, GM1900 GM57AA on Cricket (AT&T) in the US. Uses LTE band 2. I have not flashed BA builds yet and have no idea if it will "unlock" any other bands (17 mainly) but have had no issues. I live in NE GA.
I am also using the GM1900 and I have the AA software. On T-Mobile and I have no problems with my phone.
I have the OnePlus 7 Pro and on the 9.5 .8 firmware it finally got visible support which is Verizon. But on 10.0 firmware it stopped working because they forgot to put the APns in. On 10.0.1 it started working again. This is why I was wondering if the gm57aa firmware had it being that it wasn't the unlocked firmware for a USA global phone. The OnePlus 7 was meant for other countries and not for the USA where visible is located. see on the OnePlus 7 Pro when you put the visible Sim in it locked the APN area out so I could not enter any APNs.
I'm on gm57aa and as I took a look I can go in and add APNs to my list if I want to.
I'm not sure if that really helps because if I seem to remember before I put the visible sim in my 7 pro I could add APNs but when I put the visible Sim in I was unable to add APNs.
I can add APNs as well. Although I did not have to, I just put in sim and apn was added automatically and everything just works.
No, sorry, I'm on cricket, which is att. A GSM carrier. You may have to call your provider to add this phone, they have to "unlock" it on their Network.
Unlocked Pre-Order from Samsung w ATT SIM - will I be able to use WiFi calling /VoLTE
Current Note8 user on ATT (phone locked to carrier). I pre-ordered a Note20 Ultra from Samsung direct, unlocked version. Have been off XDA really for a couple years and not rooting/modding much lately but have read that ATT will not allow unlocked phones on their network to use WiFi Calling and/or VoLTE. If true, are there workaround options for me (assuming I stick w ATT as the carrier I mean) to get these to work, or should I cancel the unlocked model and order the ATT version? Was hoping to root eventually and remove bloatware / play w custom ROMs again on the Ultra etc etc. - that is why I ordered an unlocked version.
Thanks gents for the guidance here! Best forum around for us phone geeks
Much thanks - I will do this then when it arrives.
Did not work for me on the unlocked note 10+. Worked right away on the tmobile.
Att was actually fun to have. Nothing that att expected worked on the unlocked device. For example I had unlimited hotspot, despite it was not included in my att plan.
That's bizarre. I am rethinking this unlocked route. I must have wifi calling since signal at the house is terrible in my area. I don't need the drama of uncertainty if this will work or not. Might as well cancel the unlocked one and just upgrade via att. Oy. Wtf is with att these days? They lost my directv account last year and now their wireless policies are looking like a royal pita.
I don't think you have to worry .... ATT seems to consistently allow Samsung unlocked devices to have carrier functions
You just have to flash the U CSC as mentioned above. Worked for me on Note 10 and is currently working on a s20 ultra device
I strongly recommend switching your order to the ATT model. I got my note 10+ unlocked based off the suggestions found here saying that flashing the att firmware would give me all the features, and I've been through a year of headaches.
For a little wile i was able to enjoy wifi calling, voicemail and VOLTE, but after my first software update the features were lost. i was able to get them back briefly by putting my sim back in an old Att phone and keeping it for a day or two, but that trick never lasted past a week. I've tried re-flashing the software, switching back to unlocked and then back to ATT, basically anything i could think of and it never worked.
calling ATT didn't help either, as the reps gave me a canned line about not supporting outside phones. the whole reason I'm updating to the 20 ultra is to just get my phone fully functional with an ATT model
Thanks darth. Yeah, I switched to the att version. Hate the hidden tracking bloatware etc that comes with it but must have a very workable phone for daily work calls and wifi calling is a must. No drama is my motto these days. Thank you for reporting your experience.
I had the same situation with my unlocked Pixel 4 XL, keep calling ATT until I got the right person to modify my sim to allow WiFi Calling to work, that's my plan when I get my unlocked 20 Ultra.
I'm not a gent, but I doI have the Note 20 Ultra in for review and am using it with an AT&T SIM. VoLTE works, no option for WiFi calling.
What worries me is the 5G. Will unlocked work for ATT 5G?
It does on my unlocked Galaxy S20+ 5G. The Note 20 Ultra is a ways to release and their system doesn't yet correctly identify the IMEI, so I can't say for sure what will happen after release day.
Hi Lisa,
Your reviews are the best, so thank you first of all. Can you check if it has any eSIM capabilities? Supposedly S20 was going to get an update to allow eSIM use in US but that never happened...
Thanks . I'm not seeing anything under connection settings on our US unlocked Note 20 Ultra (there's no IMEI listed or cellular network option listed under connection settings when no nano SIM is installed. EsimClient is running on the phone, which makes me think the hardware must be there. EsimClient is not running on my GS 20+ unlocked.
Great, thank you for checking and comparing with S20+ !
eSIMClient running gives me hope that we will get eSIM support in an update...Still perplexed how or why Samsung has gone out of the way to disable eSIM on US variants when Apple, Google support it.
Ha! Thanks Lisa (love your tech vids!!) - I switched to the ATT version. Supposed to be here 8/21. I can't take a chance with wifi calling being borked, or that just that I may need to Odin-flash updates or CSC packs periodically to keep up with the monthly patches (ie force an unlocked unit to keep working on ATT's network if my previous firmware gets overwritten etc. I mean). I guess as I got older I went from a tech pioneer and adopter to just an end user LOL.... I just need it to work. Maybe I can do that package remove thingy and chop the bloatware periodically... we shall see once the community gets these units and starts their dev magic for us.
I guess I will need to make an appt at the local ATT store in a week to get on a new 5G plan from my current 4G one to take advantage of the coming speeds.
You're welcome- glad you enjoy our vids! With AT&T, you can simply change your plan online, no need to visit a store. The mid and high tier unlimited plans include 5G.
Could you tell me more. I have the US unlocked note 20 ultra, I put an AT&T sim in (from my note 9 unlocked) and I can't find an option to turn on wifi calling. I pretty much gave up on feature like this, because I would rather have the unlocked phone, but if it works now maybe I am missing something.
Question Root Moto G Stylus 5g 2021
After 72 hours I was able to OEM unlock. I then unlocked the bootloader. The device has been successfully rooted with Magisk 23.0. I used the Motorola recovery tool to get original boot.img. Although I have root, there seems to be some restrictions on /product/media & other various permissions. I haven't been able to change the boot animation or install BusyBox.. The root directory seems to have some things "re-arranged". Not sure what that's about. Android 11 is proving to be less awesome than Android 10. I am playing with a few ideas, mainly terminal commands using su, chmod, and others, to potentially gain permissions back. I'll post here when I find solutions. I have the phone through boost, the Denver Variant. This is a great phone, and I'd hate to be permanently blocked from making the changes I'd like to after rooting.
Their (talking Metro by T-Mobile) 3G shutdown was scheduled for October 1st of this year, but they moved it to April 2022. 3G shutdown = phones not capable of 5G will no longer work on that network. So its kinda puzzling why the non-5G version of the Moto G Stylus is getting such development and the actual 5G version...isn't. Also weird that Metro is selling a non-5G version at all given the looming 3G sunset but...here we are.
But, at least they have till April. I have till February (I'm with Cricket(AT&T)). Verizon is holding out the longest with January 2023 for their 3G sunset.
So it is a good thing I upgraded to 5G. Thanks for the info.
The 3G network is being phased out, not 4G. The 4G service will be around for a long time for all of the carriers. My wife just purchased a iPhone 11 phone and it is 4G. Low income people have the subsidised free mobile service and cheap 4G phones. The 5G coverage is still in its infancy. The non-5G version will work just fine on T-Mobile's network with 4G, as will any 4G GSM phone that is supported on T-Mobile's network. Same goes with all the other carriers. Your 4G phone will continue to work on AT&T's network. You need to do your research first before posting incorrect information.
I didn't say 4G was going away. I said 3G. And you of course you know the carriers won't allow 4G/LTE only, right? you'll need two, 3G/4G together, and when the sunset happens, 4G/5G together. More on that below:
I'd ask the same of you, sir/ma'am. 4G is not enough, or else Cricket wouldn't be sending out texts saying to buy a 5G phone (from them, of course) by February or lose your service. You...DO know they're doing that, right? Surely one accusing one of not doing research has done research themselves on the matter? Let me help you: the xda board for the phone I currently have, the Note 10 Lite, talked about that.
All I will say is if you want to believe that a customer has to buy a 5G phone to continue service with Cricket, go right ahead.
Oh right I forgot the best part: once a month any outgoing call I make? Will be re-directed to customer support with a recording saying my device won't work February 2022 and to upgrade now.
Now, if Metro/T-Mobile is going a different route, as in not being a horse's behind about this, great. It was still a good idea that folks got this phone versus the non-5G version. Anyone saying "herp derp 3G is sunseting not 4G!" well Google is free is all I can say. Might wanna look it, heck walk into a Metro/T-Mobile store (if one doesn't feel comfortable with customer support) and ask them.
Anyway, I'm waiting for a working TWRP before I finally pull the trigger and switch. But I'm glad people with this phone has root. Its a great start.
OK... Here's a brief rundown.
ALL the carriers (ATT/Verizon/Tmobile)
are retiring their 3g networks next year.
I believe ATT's is at the end of February 2022.
Started this thread because I was affected.
AT&T marked my redmi note 9 plus as a 3G phone, instead of as a 4g phone.
and I moved to a 4g ONLY location, and lost all service.
Thus, I moved to a moto G5 stylus 5g (what a mouthful!)
Now I again need to re-root, to remove the tether provisioning app.
I forgot that when I had a moto G3 I swore to never buy another moto phone for that reason!
sigh
update notes:
just got bootloader unlocked
about to root to install magisk.
and then disable that darn hot-spot check!
and insert ad repellent!
cheers
Another update : july 2022
gave up, and bought the hot-spot feature from AT&T.
still haven't rooted it yet.
And btw,
there are TWO different MOTo 5G stylus (2021) versions. the one Motorola sells via amazon (6GB ram, 256GB Storage) and the one AT&T sells, which is 6GB Ram and 128GB storage)
The one from Motorola does NOT run wifi calling, the less robust one from AT&T does.. I spent about 5 months arguing for them to upgrade me.
I wound up having them send me a "micro/Piko" Cell tower, [hardwired iinto my [IOT network] which brought me from one bar of service to 5 bars of service in my apartment
and will also support 5 other AT&T users
AT&T wound up getting a new 'tower' via my apartment, and I dont care. have the phoone, and happy.
Now for a new ROM!
After 72 hours I was able to OEM unlock. I then unlocked the bootloader. The device has been successfully rooted with Magisk 23.0. I used the Motorola recovery tool to get original boot.img. Although I have root, there seems to be some restrictions on /product/media & other various permissions. I haven't been able to change the boot animation or install BusyBox.. The root directory seems to have some things "re-arranged". Not sure what that's about. Android 11 is proving to be less awesome than Android 10. I am playing with a few ideas, mainly terminal commands using su, chmod, and others, to potentially gain permissions back. I'll post here when I find solutions. I have the phone through boost, the Denver Variant. This is a great phone, and I'd hate to be permanently blocked from making the changes I'd like to after rooting.
Can you please post the steps that you went through in rooting your phone?
I unerstand what you were saying. I tend to be paranoid... Pun intended. I'm still working with the new "scoped storage" but where there is a will...
Question Sim card not detected on any custom rom I try.
For whatever reason, no matter what custom rom I flash on my LE2115, they don't detect my sim card. Is there anyone that may have solved this issue?
I'ma bump dis, mods lmk if I'm not allowed to do this
I'm in the same boat with mine. It's with the OTA Android 12 updates though. I can't get it to pick up my sim. I was LE2115 then I had to rollback to Android 11 and now my phone sys it's LE2117. Don't know the difference but also I don't have an option for 5G in my settings. I'm on Verizon network. I think that might be my issue of the sim not showing up. WBU? What network are you on?
I'm on Verizon. Turned out a few more factory resets and a couple more Rom reinstalls, it fixed itself. My phone says it's a le2113, even though it's a 2115. May be a Rom issue
I keep getting that as well , Its only taken me a few times putting it in and out and just a reboot. That's only on oos 11 tho every time I flash 12 my touchscreen just flat out does not work and I have to use a keyboard and mouse.
And well now I am right there no sim ;D
I keep trying the updates the latest I think C40 was the same issue for me. No data connection. This sucks. A flagship phone but you can't use flagship features. I don't even ham an option in my setting to use 5G when it's in the name OnePlus 9 5G. I loved my OnePlus 8T but I might be heading back over to Google and try out the Pixel 6 if this issue can't be resolved soon.
