Upgrading Smartphones: To wait or to Upgrade?Nowadays almost everyone is using a smartphone , And almost every week a new smartphone is being launched. As far as I can imagine more than 90% of users should have an old smartphone . Old means not like an ancient one it means it's predecessor is already launched . So where do you belong ? In the 90% category or in the least 10% category ? Don't ask about me I am using an ancient one to be more specific I am still using Realme 2 pro because why not ?
Nowadays it's so hard to control the peer pressure of upgrading your smartphone Keeping an eye on the number of new smartphones coming to market every month and number of new techs / features introduced by the OEMs . So when you really need to upgrade your smartphone ? And did the upgrade is really worthy ?

Your old smartphone never becomes worse (it is as it is from the beginning) just the new launched phone is better than the old so it's our obvious psychological thought that our old smartphone is no more a good phone .

Here are some questions to ask yourself before you plan to upgrade your phone .
The first and foremost cause is you are either satisfied or not with your phone. By thinking this you must have to keep your emotions aside . Because you must have heard that "dil mange more" means we humans are never satisfied with something we always want better than the existing one .
Below are the some reasons which you must be noted when you planned to upgrade, with their pratical solutions too .
If your device didn't lasts throughout the day ? It's a obvious problem which everyone should have faced with their smartphones after one or two year of usages . But it's not a worthy reason to upgrade . You can simply visit to a service centre and replace the battery of your device.
Second you must have been run out of storage . It's another common reason but you know you can upgrade you storage by a external card or you can clear the trashes I mean unnecessary files from your internal storage. Storage space is never sufficent for anyone .
Third the software in your phone seems outdated . It's one of the most common problem some OEMs provides only one or two year of software upgrade which is really bad and you can't do anything they are not going to listen you by any means . You will ask what's the solution for this ? If you are really a tech geek and really want to know about all stuffs ( not a usual person ) then you must have to check the open source projects once . There is a whole lot of new things out there . You can get latest Android versions and security patches for your old devices too . This is how I am using my realme 2 pro with Android 12 .
Did you think there are any other reasons too which I forgot to note ? Please let me know in comment section .

When do you need to upgrade ?
First the most common one if it damaged physically and the repair cost is higher then expected then you must need a upgrade.
Second if the camera quality is not up to the mark and it really affects your day to day life .
Third if you can't find the parts to replace like battery, usb port etc then you must have to upgrade .
These are the some reasons where you must have to upgrade . What else you think must be included here ? Comment down your thoughts I am waiting for your response .

(image credit)when you planned to upgrade what will be your minimum requirements ?Now let's come into the final phase of this thread.
First you saw what are the reasons which are not worthy for upgrade , then I mentioned what are the reasons where you must have to upgrade , now finally when you planned to upgrade what will be your minimum requirements ? Let's talk about it .
Here I mentioned my minimum requirements if i am going to upgrade my smartphone . Keeping in mind the budget is around 15k to 25k .
Click to collapse
It must have to be atleast 60hz amoled (good quality amoled though not inferior ramless amoleds ) . If 90hz amoled then it's like cherry on the cake . Hell no to lcd .
It must have a snapdragon seven series or higher processor . Or mediatek dimensity series . But snapdragon is always preferred by me .
It must have 6 gb or above ram and 128gb and above internal storage and the storage should be ufs 3.1 not usual emmc storage.
It should have atleast 4000mhz battery and supports fast charging I think fast charging is common now a days.
It should have atleast 3 years of Android update and should be launched with latest Android versions and the UI should be clean and bloat free.
These are my minimum requirements . I will consider this much when buying a new phone . What's your minimum requirements ? Let me know in the comment section . And after checking my requirements if you have to suggest a phone to me then what will it be ? Please suggest one I am planning to upgrade . It should be from any OEMs.
This much is for today. Hope you liked it , please hit the thumbsup button if you liked it. see you in upcoming thread .

Not everyone has the same needs; some people don't play games or do a lot of Web browsing on their phone, so they don't need any more features than that. I watch a lot of video and browse the Web; my Pixel 2 was quite sufficient for nearly 5 years, and I only upgraded to the Pixel 5 because the battery was at the end of its useful life.
I agree with the general principle of bloatware and a clean UI, which is why I bought a Pixel.
Please note that battery capacity is measured in milliamp-hours (mAh) not megahertz (MHz).
Lastly, security needs are largely subjective; someone who uses only a few trusted apps and doesn't do much Web browsing is much less likely to be a target of malicious software than someone who does. It is however a good idea to keep your device up to date.

Phone of the decade!!!!

As we draw near to the end of the 'noughties' i thought it would be interesting to see what everyone thought was the phone of the decade.
This decade has truely been amazing in the tech its brought us, could we have imagined 10 years agao the devices we could get hold of today???
This thread isn't just about the best spec phone but (that would obviously be won be the most recent devices) but should also be about inovation, cult status, tech breakthroughs etc.
I own a HTC hd2 which is simply an amazing phone!!! 1ghz under the hood, 4.2" capacitive screen, HTC sense etc. Saying that though i think the phone i loved the most was my tytn11. When i first got that phone it was like a car with its handbreak on! eventually the mechanics here on XDA lifted the hand break to create arguably one of the best devices of the decade?
Also as this decade cames to an end a massive thank you to all the devs here at XDA, we, HTC, and Microsoft wouldn't know what to do with out you!!! Heres to the Next 10 years, what will we have in our pockets then????????
Mods, If this thread needs to be moved somewhere please feel free to do so.

Like your thread mate, very well presented but its not the phone of the decade. seems like you jumped the gun in 2008???
Kovski - Sony Ericsson Xperia = HTC???
You are doing lots of polls but i want to know what people think? Its not a straight forward as one better than the other, its about (as i said in my first post) inovation, cult status, tech breakthroughs etc not just about people having the newest device so 'voting for that!'
I'm encouraging people to discuss their thoughts on this so this thread is b=very different to yours.
Oh and putting Please just vote do not post, even if your device is not on the list isn't the way to construct an accurate poll!!
Thanks for your constructive opinions, I got your point and you got mine
On that case I would say that the phone of the decade is HTC Universal

P.d: quote:seems like you jumped the gun in 2008???quote.
Devices presented on that poll from 2008 are older (some from 2003)
Agreed, that is a cracking phone!
Thanks for the reply mate, like i said your threads are great really good work

Y'know, technically there's still another year of the current decade left.
Mine is....
My phone of choice is the palm treo 700w. It was the first phone to get me hooked on wm. Since then i have had the tp, and now i have the tp2 and hoping to get one of my hands on that beautiful hd2. Happy almost Christmas.
HTC's Magician
phone of the decade= HTC's Magician
why= First phone that blew my mind, so small and powerfull (backthen ) 400 mhz, faster than my ipaq!!! I still have the orange m500 version as paper weight I believe the Magician is the true first mainstream smartphone.
For me it is the Apple Iphone due to it pushed mobility to the next decade.
Nokia N95.
Close the thread!
Seriously, 5MP camera, GPS, music, browser, email - it had it all before any other phone did. Some are still trying to catch up. It's a clear winner!

Although i do hate it its impact on the mobile phone market is undoubted, coukld well go down as the most influential phone of the decade. However there were some serious smart phones out way before the iphone,

This device was/is packed full of features but lacked......... class? again when this first came out it had a big impact. Issues let it down a bit i think like the fact that the gps was locked to Nokias own navigation software, not much software for it, and the build quality (to me) was terrible?
I have the HD2 but have to agree on the Nokia N95.
The camera is better than any other phone out there still, HD2 comes close though.
It's a bloody tough phone! My brother has dropped his millions of times, cracking the screen and everything and the thing still worked.

a $35 tablet running android 2.2 in India

Ministry of Human Resource Development under Govt. of India had promised in 2010 that they will provide a low cost, android based tablet for the needy mass of the Indian population which can't afford the basic resources such as internet and exactly after an year they have launched "Akash" (in Hindi it means sky).
Most of India's 1.2 billion people are poor and products such as Apple Inc's iPad are beyond the reach even of many in the fast-growing middle class.
The low-cost device is part of the government's larger initiative aimed at improving India's educational system through technology
Technical specifications:--
*Operating system: Android 2.2
*Screen: 7″ resistive
*Processor: 366 MHz + HD video co-processor (or 600MHz by a U.S. company Conexant Systems. I'm not sure which one of the either)
*RAM: 256 MB
*Flash memory: 2GB + 2GB Micro-SD (expandable up to 32 GB)
*USB ports: 2
*Network: WiFi (GPRS & 3G options) SIM module will be added preferably in next batch
*180 minutes of battery power, two USB ports
*multimedia and videoconferencing capabilities
Best of all this is developed & made in India.

what do you think of it ??
this tablet is small slow and etc.
but 35$? this is awesome!
this is useful to children.
it isn't that slow... It has separate HD video co-processor so even a 1080p video runs smoothly on it .
35$? It's like for free...
reminds me...
Anyone else recall an effort a few years back to give impoverished third world villages free laptops? They ran linux, had rechargeable batteries with a crank-winder, and were rather minimally powered. This sounds like a much better deal to me.
India rocks!
180mins of battery life.......
Oh wrll , I guess that's what you get for $35
Forever living in my Galaxy Ace using XDA App
For that money, why not..
It's very good because it helps to indian people to touch technology.

3 hours of display is pretty cool on a tablet for $35...!!! Our $500 phones barely touch the 4 hour mark for most people!

Its the first try, and 3 hours on something for $35 is ok
They can improve it in the future once they get enough feedback, perhaps a faster proccy + big battery n a capacitative screen with maybe ics , and yea increase the cost a bit for this new version
Its too good, everyone can fell the android experience

actually screen is the price deciding factor in most cases... it saves nearly rupees 5-7k per tablet which is more than the current price. Capacitive and amoLED screens are way too much costlier !!!1
Then it is easy to see and estimate all marketing markups on the manufacturing costs ...
At the end of the day we pay for the brand mainly ...
If it had the battery power it would be the perfect as a portable media player considering it has an SD slot and can supposedly play media well
wow what u guys except for $35?

Review and rooting guide below.
Review
Performance- The Mediatek chip performs exceptionally well in this device. I'm pretty impressed with what this company has been doing with its cpu stuff lately.
Build- It feels solid.
LTE- Many low budget phones are still shipping with HSPA, so it's nice to see LTE in this one.
Display- It's not really a bad display, but it's clear that it's a cheaper panel. Really just way too cool in my opinion.
On screen keys- these are literally the best thing they have done on the phone
Android 5.1- I seriously doubt it'll ever see any update, which is a bummer.
When it comes to looks, I'm kind of torn on how I feel about the Xfire. On one hand, I think it's kind of OK looking; on the other, I think it looks cheap. The thing is, I can't really tell what it is that makes me think the latter - perhaps (most likely?) it's the plastic back. It doesn't really look terrible, but it doesn't really scream "premium" to me either.
The overall size and form factor are pretty great, though. It's got a 5-inch display, which is a really nice size no matter how you slice it. It also feels very solid and well-made - not at all like a $50 phone. The build quality definitely offers the more premium feel that I like to see on more low budget phones
Camera - the camera is pretty rock solid on this one, check out some pictures i took
Software - This phone runs vanilla android and is all but stock with some minor "useful" software customizations offered.
Performance and benchmark - this device performance good and doesnt lag, also the multitasking is pretty good.
i have performed antutu benchmark and here are the results
Conclusion - i really love this device, i bought this device as an extra if at all i brick my main devices due to rom testing .this little 50$ beast is perfectly standing upto its price and delivering its best
Rating -
Rooting
Rooting the phone is as simple as installing a app,
just install kingroot apk from below and install it
open it, follow on screen instructions

Alright thanks for the reply though
maybe there is somebody able to make one, and would be nice to know if xposed was running than?! I read on some reviews that it should get marshmallow, can anybody confirm that? and what about the promised roms cm and miui?!
thanks man.
how much is left in the internal memory, for apps? is it a one partition system, or two?
5,04 gb is left, one partition.
Nobody interested in doing some development for the xfire?
There is a new official rom for the xfire.

Did not note any (visible) changes.
How to get this phone with $50, it costs more than $70 in all stores?! Thanks!

Is Vivo NEX a success in sales?

Vivo is top brand in china right now. I wonder how much of this is a result of Vivo NEX ?
I think if they would lower price a little a lot more people would buy it.. like 100 dollars cheaper or something would make big difference in sales

Well actually BBK group is the largest Chinese manufacturer and includes Vivo,Oppo and OnePlus.
And all of three produce high cost smartphone even in mainland China.
Vivo and Oppo selling majority in Asia and OnePlus in Europe and India.
And even higher cost devices produced their between the top brand in China(Vivo-Oppo) and OnePlus in India and Europe.
NAM = North America, LATAM = Latin America, MEA = Middle East, CEE = Central & Eastern Europe, WE = Western Europe, APAC = Asia-Pacific

I dont think nex 2 will have this solution, I think they just want to try it out and see how people perceive it.
Right now there is too many compromises with a dual screen. When it does not affect thickness, battery capacity and price its a better idea.
overall I think Lenevo Z5 did do a better job it looks more stylish, nex version looks like a prototype in comparison. And the circular Selfie light does not look good at all even if it is functional
One thing is sure dual screen version won’t have the same success as original Vivo Nex.
Simple Vivo experiment with futuristic design and unique style but as much gorgeous is dual screen display has many disadvantages over original Vivo Nex.
The real successor of Vivo Nex will be unveiled sometime in May or June and will have newer Qualcomm 855 SOC and hope 1-2 improvements for example waterproof ip67/68 certification or stereo sound and NFC.

I hope Vivo Nex will follow same pop up design , I hope it does not jump into the slide trend.
Pop up solution will hopefully be easier to convince people that it is reliable after from what I have seen no reported problem on failing motors on the selfie camera. Its good that Vivo offer different type of solutions rather then just putting all money into one solution, I like when they give us choice, which has been less and less the last years since the statistics of high volume sells have become more important for manufactures they want to have less models so they can brag about they sell more then iphone etc rather then offering more models how it was in the past. Huawei did do a good job offer a real phablet size of mate 20 x .
People in general think the pop up camera is a cool solution but the general consensus from the people is that they think the motors will break over time. Of course only time can judge that, I think people are way too skeptical about it, most people don't have their phone more then 2 years, the battery will be worthless in 2 years so I would worry more about the battery personally.
Even if we ditch the motorized solution, I dont think we should adop the slider solution, it compromises too much of the robustness of the general body, also makes it more vulnerable for dust and dirt. A spring based solution for the pop up camera is also and idea. What most people are worried about is that if the motor dies the camera gets unusable, to send into service is not a option since vivo dont have service centers outside china more or less, but in case the motor go bad there should be a spring inside so you can atleast pop up the camera with the spring when you push at the pop up area of the phone. Otherwise all we can do is see and wait how well the motors pass. Personally I have not been using the selfie camera alot of times ,I doubt I have even open it 1000 times in the last few months for instance. If you use snapchat alot and have not blocked selfie camera access I guess this number will go up fast.

Vivo NEX S - Questions, Purchase decision

Hello everyone
I found myself in this situation, so, I can now purchase global NEX S locally in one of the retailers for roughly $600, brand new, but I have some doubts about the purchase since phone is more than 6 month old, still no Pie for it and basically zero 3rd party development due to lack of source from Vivo.
I really, REALLY like the design though. Notch is a deal-breaker for me and I'm a huge fan of that full screen and in-display fingerprint reader.
I own Galaxy S8 currently and must say, S10 looks same to me. Also, hole in the display is equivalent of notch imo, so, that's a no-no.
All that said, I have few questions.
1. Does this phone (global version) have notification light (notification LED)?
2. How's the ardio coming from 3.5mm jack?
3. What do you love / hate about the phone?
4. Would you recommend it to your friend?
5. Feel free to add your own opinions.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Love everything except funtouch launcher but i replace by nova launcher...no notification led but just install NO LED and work very very well....battery with full usage stai easy 2 day....screen is very amazing color...no notch..no waterdrop screen , fulll screen...s10+ with 2 hole in screen (very ugly)
dont hesitate
only thing is functouch...you need take 1-2 hrs to knoww all about functouch
S10 design really disappointed me but I'm sure many people will buy it.
Still, thanks for your reply, there's still no root access available for the NEX, right? What a gorgeous phone anyway

I have had my Nex S for around 1 week now and here are my views & opinions to help you along the way.
1) Display is Fantastic (ok it's not QHD) but really that does not matter it vibriant and clear and most of all it's ALL Display and that I very much appreciate.
2)Battery life (although Funtouch doesn't show SOT, yes I or you could use GSM or similar, but all I can say is that I play alot of PubG and browse and use message and like now, took off charge at 8am it's now 11pm and I have 28% left, it's well fantastic.
3)I have the international version and it's great no Chinese bs, and notifications come through just fine, if you install Nova or Pixel launcher your all golden.
4)Don't listen to reviews the UD scanner works well and I'd say 98% success rate for me or very close to, opens as fast as I need it to.
5)Camera's are nice to, ok perhaps not pixel, but I like the quality you get from them.
6)Design is nice to and comes with a nice case (not a cheap feeling one) it's quite decent.
Overall yeah I would recommend the Nex S, no there isn't root but I don't actually mind, I have other phones that I can mess around with...
Hope this helps, it's a very nice device ......:good:
No root but with ADB its very easy to remove all bloatware...but with 8gb ram...no need more ram

I agree with all the previous comments. I highly recommend this phone. It's phenomenal in terms of performance, looks and superb battery life. Just change the launcher.
Huge thanks to all of you, will post uptades and my impressions if I get it
I'm thinking to get one nex s....
Totally agge with above posts by other users I'm having the Chinese version 6 months now and most of the case totally satisfied.
The only thing missing from the device is 3 things.
1.No unlimited app notification on AOD(very bad Vivo policy-most OEM offer that choice with AOD)
2.You can not customize off screen gesture like for example Oxygen offer with Oneplus and use whatever app want.
3.Not having unlimited accent color customization and not having dark/black themes out of box like Oxygen offer.
With nova launcher +sesame shortcut app+ HD widget you could get SOT detail info.
Just like my few minutes ego results after 2.5 days.
