Hello,
I have a LG V50 5G - version LM-V500EM, Android 11, SW version V30b-EEA-XX. I guess it's the Korean version - it has on the back the 5G logo and the pins for the second display at the bottom.
Also, I have a 5G subscription on Orange carrier, in Romania.
So I have a few questions about the LG V50 :
1. Should there be a 5G option in the Settings menu -> Internet and network -> Mobile network ? I'm asking this because on different phones, even LG ones, there is a option for 5G. An example is LG Velvet 5G, which has 5G auto option in the Mobile network menu. Or because the phone (LG V50 5G) supports only the 5G NR N78 band, there is no option. In contrast, because the LG Velvet supports multiple 5G bands, it has the 5G option ?
2. How do I know when the phone connects to a 5G mobile network ? Or to any type of mobile network ? I only see the mobile signal strength in the top right corner, but no additional information. On other type of phones, even LG ones, you see 5G, 4G, 3G, VoLTE etc. Is there a way to enable, to be shown like this ? I know I can see the type of connection if I go to settings, but I wanna see it on the main screen.
3. This is related to the 2nd question - When the phone connects to a 5G network, does the logo on the back do something ? Like intermittent flash with red color ? I see that when I receive a notification, the 5G logo flashes in blue color
I attached some pictures, to better understand what I'm saying. Unfortunately, the menu is in Romanian and so are the pictures but you get the point.
Hi, in Poland on my V500N I have like this:
Thanks for the reply, guess there is a SW problem with mine.
Still, I managed to activate the 5G using the secret menu code *#546368#*500# and the following path :
Field Test -> Modem Settings -> RAT Selection and selected from there the option that contains 5G NSA. The only dilemma was that there were 2 options that contained the naming and surprisingly both of them worked for me (I observed no difference between them).
By the way, so you have the 5G logo on the back ? If yes, when it's connected to a 5G network, does it stay lighted in red color ?
I have this logo, but my operator does not support 5G for now.
I am in Orange, but in the Orange sub-brand for young people - NJU and so far there is no 5G for this brand. Besides, I don't care too much.
If the phone connects to 5G - you will have the sign 5G instead of LTE on top bar of screen.
As far as I know, the logo on the back will have some color - red or orange ...
I have the 5G sign in the top right corner but I also wanted to see it in red on the back, as in the launch video. I thought that it's somewhat "fake positive" if it doesn't also light red when the 5G appears on the screen.
Thanks so much for the response and have a nice day !

I have a strange issue, the phone is connected to 5g network but the icon is still 4g, can anyone confirm this? I am not sure if is a theme issue or something else
Looks like your network doesn't send UpperLayerIndicator so that is reason why 5G icon doesn't appear to status bar. Maybe 5G is not officially opened?
I do have the same issue and I was able to contact level-3 support of my operator. Can you provide more information about that? @lovers74 : where is this screen coming from? @olkitu : Thanks for this information "UpperLayerIndicator " seems to be the keyword!

I used an app called Quickshortcutmaker, and searched for 5g.

It is officially opened, and working correctly and on other devices such as Huawei or Samsung I can see the icon.

UpperLayerIndicator is in SIB2 signaling message to tell UE (example phone) this LTE tower have 5G support. Otherwise UE shows 4G icon.
Some UE like Huawei and Samsung shows 5G icon when connected to NR even network doesn't have UpperLayerIndicator in SIB2.
And most of devices show 5G icon without 5G NR... "Fake 5G"
It's N78 5G? On a S20 Ultra you see 5G but it's greyed out, because it's only 5G in downlink.

Samsung shows 5G when network send UpperLayerIndicator message and then change 5G icon color when connected to 5G layer. You can use example CellMapper app to see if 5G State Connected or not.
n78 is not only downlink, can't be uplink too. That depends network configuration.
Hello, so recently I just got a S21 ultra unlocked (sm-g998u1) and been having some problems. I currently have verizion and the problem being is that unlocked samsung phones cannot connect to verizons 5g network out of the box yet (to my knowledge). Prior with my previous phone (s20+ 5g unlocked), I used the *#*#27663368378#*#* access mode code though "phone by google" to manually turn on the 5g bands to be recieved (plus dss), which it worked.
With my new phone, it seems that none of these codes work, being the one above and the *#272* imei code to change carrier config. When I put the codes in, they just erase themselves. Was the access codes changed on the new android 11 platform? Or maybe im missing something? The s21 ultra states it is in a 5g connection by the notification bar status, but speedtest by ookla states its a lte connection, so just a placeholder. Also, it seems that none of the 4g switcher apps worth either, which I would have to guess are also tied into the access codes.
Hey all!
I know there was a lot of discussion about this in the early days of the note 20 ultra but I'm trying to find a straight forward answer to a simple question.
I'm based in the United Kingdom and have the Exynos variant of the note 20 ultra. If I was to switch to a Snapdragon international version which is best suited and had the following (if any)?
- dual SIM
- 5g (working with UK frequencies)
- unlocked bootloader
Thanks in advance for any help provided!
Until today I would have steered you away from the N9860 TGY from Hong Kong, but we now have the magic solution to unveiling 5G service (hopefully) for all networks with a quick dabble in the service menu.. Certainly the previously absent EE 5G is now present and correct. 3 and Vodafone were already supported. Not sure about O2.
It is dual SIM, if you don't mind losing the SD slot.
No idea about the bootloader. I'm not messing with it.
Firmware updates used to lag behind badly, but we have caught up finally, for now at least.
I haven't got any reason to complain now that it's fully functional and with big cost savings over the official UK stock.
I've no complaints over the Snapdragon N20 Ultra 5G I imported from Hong Kong via WondaMobile.
Signal is excellent and so is the optimisation over the Exynos version.
I don't use Samsung Pay so can't say if it works or not but Google Pay works as it should.
I'm on o2 Payg and they don't yet offer 5G to my type of contract and I also use Vodafone Payg but 5G isn't available where I am unfortunately.
Mine is dual sim 256gb version which was over £100 less than the UK version I sent back to Samsung UK.
I prefer not to root etc.
tdodd can you elaborate in regards what to do in the Service Menu to get 5G working. I've seen people use sim slot 2 that works for them or they change csc
You need to install the Google phone dialer and make it default.
Then copy/paste this string into the dialer....
*#*#276633683782#*#*
This will open the service menu, but not in the right place.
Press [5] RF TEST
Press [3] ANT TEST SETTING
Use the three dot menu at top right and press Back
The steps above will reveal the full set of menus.
Press [2] UE SETTING & INFO
Press [1] SETTING
Press [1] PROTOCOL
Press [4] GCF
Press [3] REMOVE ONLY NR WHITELIST
Use the three dot menu to press END
Reboot the phone.
This should allow 5G to function on all UK networks subject to contract and coverage restrictions.
There are some possible other optimisations through the service menu, but not required for unlocking 5G. See this thread from post 81. Earlier posts are a bit out of date.

Hi! I created this thread for SM-N9860 HK/TW/CH variant users from Philippines. The GOAL is to make our units work with our local carriers': 4G Carrier Aggregation (4G CA) (i.e. 4G+/LTE-A). 5G network and resolve any carrier related issues...

Once you've made the changes and rebooted you can return to the Samsung dialer if you prefer. The Google dialer is just needed to get into the service menu.

Thank you for the walk through
Seems quite a slog to get faster download speeds for large files.
Think I'll stay with 4G and 4G + for the time being
Hello, Im following a thread on how to choose your 5g bands and improve Lte connection and now i have tried dialing this on my google dialer to choose on 5g bands here on the philippines *#*#276633683782#*#*, as you see no options to choose from. Thanks to paolotheking and this thread about an important secret code for the Velvet and other devices:
LG Velvet Hidden Menu code
Enjoy: #*462633*#900# Works with G900EM
forum.xda-developers.com
I could finally activate the 5G network capability of my phone.
I have a Dutch (NLD) genuine SIM unlocked Velvet LM-G900EM with latest Android 11 v20d-EEA-XX installed.
If you hit with the phone dialpad this sequence:
#*462633*#900#
it will lead you to a hidden menu where you can find all sort of information and tweaking options.
You have to choose "Field Test", then "Modem settings". You will have here many things you can change. Go to "RAT Selection", it will give you many more options than the ones you find under the regular "Network settings".
I tested here first "LTE(5G NSA) Auto" and it instantly made the 5G icon appear in the task bar! So I then hit the "GSM/WCDMA/LTE(5G NSA) Auto" option. I now have up to 5G automatic network selection!
Only issue is that under the regular Network settings, "Preferred network" states now "26" and if I want to see what other options you have, it only lists the options up to 4G preferred and it will go back to 4G maximum. So you have to go through the hidden menu again to activate it.
I also tested that if you power off the phone, 5G maximum stays activated when you power on the phone again, good to know.
You may also try to tweak your 5G bands by selecting them in the corresponding menu "Band Selection" in the "Field Test", "Modem Settings". Some of them might not really work though, as it might be hardware related depending on your model.
Hopefully it can help people finally being able to use the 5G network of their provider with the Velvet, and possibly other LG 5G phones like the V50(S) V60, Wing. You just have to put your model number at the end of the secret code ...#900# for the Velvet, ...#510# for the V50S ...#100# for the Wing, aso, if I understood it good.
Edit: works for the LG Wing too, just tested it!
