Hi all
Earlier this year my phone stopped working with Android Auto, and then more recently, I realised it wasn't recognised by my laptop for the purposes of moving files.
Around the time AA broke, I discovered my Belkin power bank had melted component on the circuit board (not sure which device caused it but presumably my pixel) and when the phone was plugged in the head unit showed the error "Overcurrent caution on USB" until I unplugged the phone. Never saw the message again but AA won't launch on the head unit now, phone still charges through the head unit. My phone still detects the charger type (still fast charges) and I bought a cheap inline voltage display and it shows the phone charging at the expected current for each type of charger.
I've done all the usual;
AA unit still works with my wifes Samsung A40, tried different cables for my phone. Uninstalled and re-updated AA, factory reset the head unit, (Sony XAV-AX100) and completely hard reset the Pixel 3a with no luck.
So I took the plunge yesterday and opened the phone up and fitted a new USB-C port...however, frustratingly this has not fixed the problem! I've put the phone back together but I'm reluctant to glue the screen back down before exhausting all avenues. Is there anything else that may have been shorted or damaged if the USB-C was faulty? I turned on developer mode and *I think* the phone should allow me to choose what to do when plugging the phone in (i.e. file sharing?) but it does not do this.
Any tips on further diagnostics or parts I should check would be appreciated
Thanks
I'm a little confused by my own sequence of events as it was several months ago and it was a couple of weeks before I realised it wasn't just a simple fix. I took a photo of the head unit error message and my phone is reflected in the screen and doesn't appear to be plugged in. So either the message remained after I unplugged the phone, or perhaps power bank was faulty and damaged the phone, I may have charged it from the head unit by mistake which detected the fault and protected itself (hence the message). Normally I wouldn't attempt to charge the power bank from the headunit, but the USB sockets are not far from each other.

This is what happens when I try and transfer files via USB. The computer prompt comes up immediately and the phone charges, if I click the File Transfer/Android Auto option, after a few moment the phone greys them out
Just bumping this in case anyone has any advice, I've had the screen taped down temporarily but its vulnerable to water and damage like this so I think its time to admit defeat and glue it back together!

So my TF101 appears to be completely dead. I had it rooted and rom'd running KatKiss 4.3,not sure of which number . I loved it too. Anyway, before it died, it rebooted and would not leave the "updating apps"screen so I did a factory install which fixed the problem but only temporarily. A few days later the same thing happened. This time I could not even reboot it. I left it charged overnight but could not get it to boot at all. I think I have tried everything. I tried booting with and without being on the keyboard dock, I have tried plugging into the computer, tried hdmi to a monitor to see if the screen went bad. I tried seeing if the computer recognized it in APX mode. NOTHING. The USB charges the keyboard dock but does nothing for the tablet. The computer does not see it period. It looks completely dead. It is out of warranty but I even called ASUS and all they would do is charge me $340 to send it in.
I would love to troubleshoot to see if it is a board or battery or whatever gone bad , but I cannot find anything on the Web. Can anyone help. Otherwise it's a lovely paperweight.
It's possible that the battery has come to the end of it's life and won't hold any charge, which would explain why APX mode won't work, the PC can't power on the TF via USB, only trickle charge it while it's powered off / screen is off, but if the battery is dead then that's not gonna happen either
Not sure if the charger needs the battery for it to power on the TF too or not
You could try disconnecting the battery and plugging in the charger
Here is a good teardown video to show exactly how to get that done
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-6dKsGJ4VY
Im not 100% sure, but if the dock battery is fine, you could check and see if the connections are the same and swap them over

Still DEAD
Detection,
Thanks for the awesome YouTube of breaking down the TF101. Unfortunately, I swapped batteries and still no good. Nothing happens. It looks like the old battery has power too, based on my multimeter. Is there anyone else with suggestions at this point or do I leave it as a nice paperweight?
THansk....
Apologies for resurrecting this thread. My TF101 (with dock) had also gone dead after running one of the KatKiss ROMs (maybe 4.2). Wouldn't charge, wouldn't turn on even to the bootloader or recovery. Charged it for days, nothing. I left it for dead and forgot about it for over 6 months. Uncovered it the other, dusted it off, charged it and it magically powered up. Everything was still on the tablet as it was before it went unresponsive.
My guess is that a microcontroller responsible for powering up the tablet got into a bad state. Even when powered off, these very low power microcontrollers remain on to handle the button press that powers on the device. It took the tablet being absolutely, fully discharged to clear it out of that bad state. Not just 0% as reported by the battery firmware, but a true complete emptying of the battery where its voltage drops below what the microcontroller needs to remain running.
Hopefully if you still have the TF101 after all this time, try charging it up all the way and see if it comes back to life.
I don't know if I'm the first one to say this, but I find wireless charging completely useless... I had an old '90s Motorola with a charging stand... I find that INFINITELY more useful than "Wireless charging".
First of all, the charger still has wires, so you're still stuck on a wall... Unless it has a battery attached to it, which is nice, though most scenarios where you use an on-the-go charger you are "on the go" and moving, so a normal external battery could do... (see third point)
Second. your phone is still during that time... You can't do anything to it... Why? Just so you don't need to put a wire in the port, to save some (1 second) time (?)
Third, it has ZERO stability. That's why I say that charger from 20 YEARS AGO was a lot better. You put your phone in and it charged. Same as Wireless charging, except that old Motorola didn't fall off and stop charging the second someone bumped into the table just a little bit. Or you are in a car...
I find wireless charging just good marketing taking charging a step back...
Also, the USB pins that keep the wire in my phone got crushed, so my phone right now can't be lifted while charging... PEOPLE ACTUALLY PAY FOR THIS???
PS: I found a "useful" use in cafes

All you need to do is plug in the phone and "wirelessly" charge....
I can't see the appeal, either. I use my phone a lot whilst it's attached to the charging cable. You can't do that when you use a wireless charger.
My charging cable is 2 meters long. I can sit on the sofa and use my phone as an ereader or TV screen whilst it's charging. If I were to use a charging pad, I'd have to leave it on the table, which is not very convenient.
For me wireless charging is just a useless gimmick.
I find the potential of it interesting, rather than the current state that it's in.
It just seems a billion times more durable than the damn micro-usb port on EVERY Android device.
Maybe wireless charging is the solution, or maybe it's usb type-c.... we'll see i guess :]
Yeah I don't see the appeal either. Maybe it's good for coffee shops or restaurants where you don't use your phone anyways and it's lying on the table, so might as well get charged.
Hi guys,
Yesterday my OPO fell down on a busy street and ran over by truck, cars and bikes. The display is completely broken. I tried turning on after that but the phone is not vibrating.
I took my device to service center today, but he said he tried changing teh battery and boot but no luck. So display and logic board needs to be changed.
So I decided tear down and wanted to run few steps.
1. Tried booting with wall charger but without battery - not heating, not booting
2. Connected battery and no wall charger - no luck, board not heating.
3. Connected battery and wall charger - board heating but not booting.
In all the above cases the rotor on the bottom is not spinning.
Question
1. Why board heats in step 3?
2. I plan to buy the display and battery, how do I make sure the board is perfect. BTW the board looks perfect?
3. In all the above tests, the SIM card is inserted and waited for few minutes and tried dialing my number but it says Switched off all the time. Is that mean the device is completely dead?
Need constructive replies please.

If your device has really been ran over by truck or car, I don't think anything in the device will survive. (Maybe the plastic cover is flexible enough to withstand such pressure, but the motherboard is definitely not so strong although on the outside its not wrecked) As for the motherboard heating then wall charger and battery in, I suggest that it's because something is short circuited in the motherboard.

Only heating with battery hooked up sounds to me like you are on the right track. The chip packages don't have internal wires to break these days. Good luck and report back.
I received my battery yesterday, I tested it, no sign of notification light, vibration during turn on. I tried connected it to PC, but dont know which process to look at. Any help?
Update: The process is "windows driver foundation user mode driver framework host process" but it shows when connected by other android not mine [broken opo]
So, just like many other owners I have had the following problems: bootloop, mic doesn't work, speaker doesn't work, fuzzy/crazy screen, touch not responding, USB connection not recognized, and LEDs not working .
I went through all the tricks which included putting pressure on the back of the phone where the flex cable attaches under the camera, and this temporarily solved the problem. Eventually no matter how hard I pushed, it would not work. I know now how this made things worse (explained later). So when that stopped working I ordered a new flex cable like others had, hoping it would be a permanent fix. Nope, no change. However, when I was detaching the flex cable for the last time, I noticed some of the pins in the main socket lifting up. Ah of course that's why pushing helps, the pins on the female side are broken and pushing helps re-establish their connection. The problem with the pushing solution, and especially when you push hard, the pins will bend away and never re-establish the connection.
If you look at an open phone, the socket (shown in the pic below) is located in the area most susceptible to damage in my opinion. I call it the fault line where the rigid battery meets the not so rigid main board. If you have micro cracks on the side of your phone, you have most likely flexed/bent your phone along this fault line. I keep my phone in my back pocket so I'm sure I have sat down and done this many times.

So, the socket has the disadvantage of not being very sturdy, along with sitting on the fault line. The stresses placed upon it are likely snapping the pins. Here's the specs showing each pin. (rotate counter-clockwise to match up) On my phone, the left side of the socket was lifting out so all of those pins had snapped. These pins correspond to the problems I was having, eg. speaker, mic, screen, etc.
I don't know if this is a DIY fix or not. The pins are so small that if they hadn't lifted for me, I could not tell if they were snapped or not. I can tell you that the part number is ENBY0057001. I just haven't been able to find it in North America yet. If I did, would it be easy replace the broken one for a low cost?
Thanks
*crossing fingers my nexus 5 can be saved*
Hey, have you managed to find the broken part? unfortunally i have the same issue.
where did u get this part ?
same problem w me,
I replaced the bottom FLex but in vain,
I tried lots of rubber to add push up, it worked for a while ,but now it doesn't
I got this on my daily driver mainboard, colorful pixels all over the screen and mic not working.
However, it can be fixed with a tin heatgun, it's like you resolder those pins
I have two devices and when I plug in the car usb data/charger into both phones I get the following on each device:
1- Huawei P30 Pro: it charges right away and connects the EasyCon app (car's infotainment system), no issues. Two years old phone.
2- Samsung s22 ultra: at 75% battery left, once I plug in the charger it gives me 40 minutes until full then quickly stops charging and resumes charging but this time it shows 02h05m until full. Why did it reconsider the time it initially gave me? Also, Samsung S22 Ultra fails to establish a connection via EasyCon app with my car's infotainment system.
Please, help.
Thanks!
car usually have 2.4ah power which is 1.2 for each device. its not enough for fast charging of new PD supported phone (but okey for headphones, flashlights ..etc)
so using of external car charger will solve you problems
ps: dont buy any trash from aliexpress, buy a good ones with >3000 reviews on it.

Thank you Malikin! That's definitely an option, but it won't allow me to use my car's infotainment system through the EasyCon app.
I was thinking maybe there is something preventing my Samsung S22 from treating the car's charger as a charger and rather dealing with it as a media.
When I plug charger in, unlike my Huawei P30 Pro, I do Not get the usual options (charging, transferring pictures, transferring files, midi... Etc)
This cable has solved the problem for me

The attached cable, interestingly, has solved the problem for me.
