Where are RCS Messages stored? - General Questions and Answers

Hi everyone, long time!
This has gotten me quite curious when I was looking up messages and backing them up from my phone, some didn't get restored by a the software I was using because it turned out that some were RCS (Rich communication services) messages.
During this process, the software wiped all the messages before writing the ones from the backup file and to my horror there are some messages that don't make sense because they only contain Inbound and not the Outbound messages. However I've read somewhere that these types were stored in a "different database" or/and they were MMS messages in storage.
Therefore I was wondering, where are RCS Messages stored? And can they ever be recovered from deletion by a third-party software??
I hope you all are doing well during these times!

Some messenger apps don't store your messages on the device itself, they are saved on a server owned by the app creators, some messenger apps(such as Whatsapp) encrypt the data and they require specific methods to backup and restore messages from that app.

This is a good article that talks about where things are stored.
Code:
/data/data/com.google.android.apps.messaging/databases/bugle_db
/data/data/com.sec.android.provider.logsprovider/databases/logs.db
/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db

This is what I also thought as I've found out. But if they are on some server, does that mean they're NEVER deleted?
And could they be retrieved after phone wiping??

Haha...this is what I found also before making this post!
Are these root directories ever touched by third-party (Forensics, Recovery) software i.e. during wiping or Re-Writing databases?
Either way, could they be accessed and restored as originally intended on the device?

They can be deleted by the owner/user of the account or by the owners of the app/messaging platform. Facebook for example, messages there are stored on the Facebook server system.

Well I didn't delete them intentionally, as I've stated before I backed up the messages using Phone Copier Express but found out afterwards it doesn't support RCS messages when I wrote the messages back. Beforehand those messages were there, so surely they were stored somewhere, and unlikely to be deleted on the server if it was only a few days old too.
If it helps I'm using the phone's default which is Google's Messages app.
Is there anyway they could be retrieved so this app can view them again?

Anyone at all may I ask?

Exactly 4 weeks later.
Anyone at all may I ask?
I'm really hoping if there's a way to restore them by any chance??

Really interested to see if this takes off. We really need a good encrypted messaging service. I read they are also working on an iOS application, which would increase their reach tremendously.
Also, anyone care to look at the source code? I'd like to know if it is as good as they claim it is.

This is a great example of a well designed P2P truly secure mobile app. I've been using it on my Andorid 4.2 AOKP roms for the last 2 weeks with a few friends and I like it a lot more than Skype or similar apps secure or not.
It does what says on the tin, its easy to use, provides status updates as messages come through and it doesn't eat the battery. The only thing I'm missing is VOIP but this wasn't design for voice.
10/10 from me.

Best Messaging APP ever. Used it since two weeks and I love it, OpenSource + Encrypted + No Screenshots + TotalControl of Information
This is useful for me.
You need a page to send in good ideas for the app, and here is one!
This app is great. But i miss one thing. An auto-log-out function thal logs you out of all current conversations (just like manually pressing log-out button inside the app does) but with a place in the settings, where one could either type in a number between 1 and 60 (minutes) or select from a dropdown type menu. Preferrably a way to select any number between 1 and 60 minutes.
This would make the app EVEN more secure than what it already is...

No group SMS option on Hangouts?

So I'm on a Nexus 5 stock 4.4.2 and I updated my Hangouts to 2.0.217 but I'm still not getting the option to send group messages individually via SMS. Tried uninstalling all updates and reinstalling, tried rebooting.. No dice. Anyone else have this problem?
Not having this issue. What network are you with?

Yup, that's exactly the option I'm missing. It's costing me an arm and a leg.
I have exactly the same issue with any 2.0.2 build released thus far. Most frustrating.
Also worth noting I'm completely stock / currently no root.
Same here.
I have tried to delete all data from hangouts, to uninstall reinstall the latest version, no luck.
My N5 is rooted so I looked into preferences files, this options is listed in smsmms.xml file but not showed in the UI.
Reviving a possible dead subject, but has anyone gotten a response from Google about this issue still? I have multiple friends using mine and other carriers in the US sending group MMS messages via Hangouts. The primary differences are I'm on Kit-Kat, and using a Nexus 5, I am the only one who ( when added to a group MMS ) messages send back using SMS as opposed to MMS, therefore cannot join their group conversation. I know multiple people have reported this issue from previous Google searches, but, has anyone actually gotten any feedback?
I'm also having this issue. Nexus 5, Android 4.4.2 running the latest Hangouts APK of 2.0.303. Clearing data on the app, rebooting, nothing brings the group messaging setting. It seems Hangouts is stuck in the SMS mode for group messaging because any reply is sent as an individual SMS, not to the original group message.

I'll also revive this thread. Has this been fixed or still an issue? I've tried multiple settings with no success.
Hi,
I had the same problem (no group messaging option in hangouts on a nexus 5 running 4.4.2) and after a long time searching the net, I found a solution :
I read on another thread that hangout reads your phone number on the sim card (the number you see when you go to : Settings - About Phone Status - Phone number). In my case It was showing unknown, and that was the cause of the problem.
So all you need to do is add your phone number here. To do so I used an Xposed mod :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/themes-apps/app-sim-changer-change-registered-sim-t2106490
After adding my phone number, the option for group messaging appeared in hangouts sms settings.

Very promising.
Since most of us will have either the default mailer, gmail, K9 or some other popular mailer up, the ability to import accounts setting would be very highly appreciated. Kind of a pain to enter this stuff once more from the phone's keyboards, even the best of them
Thanks Dovid. I have already implemented export/import with an encrypted export file. When you tap on the export-file it will automatically associate the file with FloatMail and populate the settings. I'll expose that functionality soon in version 1.4 or 1.5. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers, Glen.

Quite nice. Will try the 1.4 or 1.5 app once posted ( and I have decided whether or not to keep the 4.4.3 Omnrom).
I take it one still needs the original emailers around to issue the notification? Or once, imported, can they be removed if this be one's preferred mailer? Read the Play description so seems this can work on its own. Actually I only use K9 so would probably keep it around.
Exchange support puts this over the rest!

Sorry I should have been clearer before. The export/import feature will backup/restore the FloatMail settings which is ideal when:
1. You want to reset the device
2. You want the same settings, but on another device
But it won't automatically configure the app based on your K9/Gmail settings.
The app connects directly to your IMAP server. In the case of Gmail, it would connect to the server using IMAP-IDLE/Push-mail. When a message is sent, it will automatically appear in a floatification within a few seconds.
It is capable of opening the inbox or compose screen of any email app that you want. [You just need to choose the app from a list on the account setup screen] However, since it shows the full message and you can do quick replies hopefully users will not need to open their email apps so often.
Cheers,
Glen

This is work with any email account (so is set up by itself)? Have not seen this yet, maybe work a look.

What's the fuss with WhatsApp's new Privacy Policy...

The internet is full of discussions about WhatsApp's new Privacy Policy and a lot is being said about how they negatively impact users' privacy. The issue is primarily this: SHARING of data with other FACEBOOK apps and services.
While a lot of concerns have been raised, there is no article that I have found which tell us HOW this new change is going to impact us negatively.
Here is what WhatsApp collects from its users (and going to share with FACEBOOK beginning February 2021):
Your Name
Phone Number
Email Address
Contacts (Full Address Book)
IP Address
Coarse Location
Profile Picture
Device ID
User ID
Advertising Data
Product Interaction
Crash Data
Performance Data
Other Diagnostic Data
Customer Support
Other User Content
Hardware Model
Operating System
Battery level
Signal strength
Time zone
Status
Those who use WhatsApp Payments service, the following additional info collected will be shared:
Payment Info
Purchase History
The question is this:
How is this change going to adversely impact users?
WhatsApp does NOT have access to the contents of your messages, voice calls, video calls, etc as these are E2E (end-to-end) encrypted. So it is NOT clear how the new change in privacy policy is such a big deal. Here are some potential scenarios:
1. The backups you create (locally as well as in the cloud) are reportedly NOT encrypted (although I doubt this). Does that mean WhatsApp will have access to your messages and other stuff? And use these in ways you are not comfortable with?
2. I don't know if Facebook REQUIRES users' phone numbers during registration. If that isn't a mandatory requirement, this is what can (or will) happen:
Since WhatsApp has full access to your address book (or contacts), it will now start 'recommending' your Facebook profile (if you have one) to your address book contacts on Facebook, even if you want to stay anonymous.
3. If you interact with Business accounts on WhatsApp, details of your interests/ enquiries/ purchases would be collected and shared with FACEBOOK. Chats with Business Accounts are NOT E2E encrypted, so that information will be shared with FACEBOOK to serve ads to generate revenue.
If you are a Facebook user, much of the above information is probably already available with FACEBOOK.
Apart from the above, I really can't think of how this new change in Privacy Policy will affect users' privacy.
Are people just having herd mentality and making too much noise over nothing?
Hope someone can throw some clarity on this.
With a lot of difficulty, I have found an example of HOW the new change in Privacy Policy can adversely affect users:
Here is an example:
Let's say A and B are married. A is having extramarital affair with C. Now A and C are secretly conversing over WhatsApp without B's knowledge.
With the new policy change, WhatsApp will inform Facebook about the frequent conversations between A and C. Please note that the contents of this conversation is NOT shared, because WhatsApp itself doesn't have access to it. But only the fact that the two are in constant touch with each other over WhatsApp, and if they are meeting up, then that detail too will be shared using location data!
Facebook will think A and C are friends, so it will start showing friends recommendation to A's contacts. In other words, Facebook will start recommending C's profile to B. B will now wonder who is C . And somehow figure out the relationship between A and C.
Do you now understand why FACEBOOK is evil and why the new privacy policy is unacceptable?
Thank you for your info.
I have to say I slightly disagree, since WhatsApp and Facebook are both closed-source, there is no way to confirm that they stick with End to End encryption 100% of the time, do it at all, or even use robust encryption algorithms. Plus, we all know the shady stuff Facebook already does with user information and selling it to advertisers. In fact, before this update to the privacy policy WhatsApp has probably already been collecting user information or something along the lines of that, so you are right in the sense that this new privacy policy update probably won't change much.
Some misinformation clarified:
WhatsApp privacy policy update: Don’t fall for these false claims
WhatsApp's new privacy policy has caused some concern among users. but don't believe all that is being circulated about the messaging app.

While nothing can be ruled out, we will still give them the benefit of doubt and accept their word on conversations being E2E encrypted.
If you are using WhatsApp AND Facebook, there isn't going to be much difference because if you have Facebook app installed on your device, it already has much of that info which will now be formally shared.
If you are using WhatsApp but NOT Facebook, you still aren't going to see any difference because what is Facebook going to do with the information it receives from WhatsApp?
With the new privacy policy, WhatsApp is only making arrangements to save itself from litigations. What I mean is information sharing was already happening at some level, which is now only being formalized. Users will hardly see a change.
It will only make a difference if you quit both. That way you can stay away from evil FACEBOOK.
