What's the fuss with WhatsApp's new Privacy Policy... - General Topics

The internet is full of discussions about WhatsApp's new Privacy Policy and a lot is being said about how they negatively impact users' privacy. The issue is primarily this: SHARING of data with other FACEBOOK apps and services.
While a lot of concerns have been raised, there is no article that I have found which tell us HOW this new change is going to impact us negatively.
Here is what WhatsApp collects from its users (and going to share with FACEBOOK beginning February 2021):
Your Name
Phone Number
Email Address
Contacts (Full Address Book)
IP Address
Coarse Location
Profile Picture
Device ID
User ID
Advertising Data
Product Interaction
Crash Data
Performance Data
Other Diagnostic Data
Customer Support
Other User Content
Hardware Model
Operating System
Battery level
Signal strength
Time zone
Status
Those who use WhatsApp Payments service, the following additional info collected will be shared:
Payment Info
Purchase History
The question is this:
How is this change going to adversely impact users?
WhatsApp does NOT have access to the contents of your messages, voice calls, video calls, etc as these are E2E (end-to-end) encrypted. So it is NOT clear how the new change in privacy policy is such a big deal. Here are some potential scenarios:
1. The backups you create (locally as well as in the cloud) are reportedly NOT encrypted (although I doubt this). Does that mean WhatsApp will have access to your messages and other stuff? And use these in ways you are not comfortable with?
2. I don't know if Facebook REQUIRES users' phone numbers during registration. If that isn't a mandatory requirement, this is what can (or will) happen:
Since WhatsApp has full access to your address book (or contacts), it will now start 'recommending' your Facebook profile (if you have one) to your address book contacts on Facebook, even if you want to stay anonymous.
3. If you interact with Business accounts on WhatsApp, details of your interests/ enquiries/ purchases would be collected and shared with FACEBOOK. Chats with Business Accounts are NOT E2E encrypted, so that information will be shared with FACEBOOK to serve ads to generate revenue.
If you are a Facebook user, much of the above information is probably already available with FACEBOOK.
Apart from the above, I really can't think of how this new change in Privacy Policy will affect users' privacy.
Are people just having herd mentality and making too much noise over nothing?
Hope someone can throw some clarity on this.

With a lot of difficulty, I have found an example of HOW the new change in Privacy Policy can adversely affect users:
Here is an example:
Let's say A and B are married. A is having extramarital affair with C. Now A and C are secretly conversing over WhatsApp without B's knowledge.
With the new policy change, WhatsApp will inform Facebook about the frequent conversations between A and C. Please note that the contents of this conversation is NOT shared, because WhatsApp itself doesn't have access to it. But only the fact that the two are in constant touch with each other over WhatsApp, and if they are meeting up, then that detail too will be shared using location data!
Facebook will think A and C are friends, so it will start showing friends recommendation to A's contacts. In other words, Facebook will start recommending C's profile to B. B will now wonder who is C . And somehow figure out the relationship between A and C.
Do you now understand why FACEBOOK is evil and why the new privacy policy is unacceptable?

Thank you for your info.

I have to say I slightly disagree, since WhatsApp and Facebook are both closed-source, there is no way to confirm that they stick with End to End encryption 100% of the time, do it at all, or even use robust encryption algorithms. Plus, we all know the shady stuff Facebook already does with user information and selling it to advertisers. In fact, before this update to the privacy policy WhatsApp has probably already been collecting user information or something along the lines of that, so you are right in the sense that this new privacy policy update probably won't change much.

Some misinformation clarified:
WhatsApp privacy policy update: Don’t fall for these false claims
WhatsApp's new privacy policy has caused some concern among users. but don't believe all that is being circulated about the messaging app.

While nothing can be ruled out, we will still give them the benefit of doubt and accept their word on conversations being E2E encrypted.
If you are using WhatsApp AND Facebook, there isn't going to be much difference because if you have Facebook app installed on your device, it already has much of that info which will now be formally shared.
If you are using WhatsApp but NOT Facebook, you still aren't going to see any difference because what is Facebook going to do with the information it receives from WhatsApp?
With the new privacy policy, WhatsApp is only making arrangements to save itself from litigations. What I mean is information sharing was already happening at some level, which is now only being formalized. Users will hardly see a change.
It will only make a difference if you quit both. That way you can stay away from evil FACEBOOK.

Really interested to see if this takes off. We really need a good encrypted messaging service. I read they are also working on an iOS application, which would increase their reach tremendously.
Also, anyone care to look at the source code? I'd like to know if it is as good as they claim it is.

Thank you!
This is a great example of a well designed P2P truly secure mobile app. I've been using it on my Andorid 4.2 AOKP roms for the last 2 weeks with a few friends and I like it a lot more than Skype or similar apps secure or not.
It does what says on the tin, its easy to use, provides status updates as messages come through and it doesn't eat the battery. The only thing I'm missing is VOIP but this wasn't design for voice.
10/10 from me.
You can join the beta testing community for recent updates.

surespot now with voice
Hi there happy surespot user! We wanted to let you know that surespot now supports voice messages. This feature is in beta testing at the moment and if you are interested in getting a sneak peak you can register with the beta group on google+ I would add a link but this forum is not allowing it.

Best Messaging APP ever. Used it since two weeks and I love it, OpenSource + Encrypted + No Screenshots + TotalControl of Information
This is useful for me.
You need a page to send in good ideas for the app, and here is one!
This app is great. But i miss one thing. An auto-log-out function thal logs you out of all current conversations (just like manually pressing log-out button inside the app does) but with a place in the settings, where one could either type in a number between 1 and 60 (minutes) or select from a dropdown type menu. Preferrably a way to select any number between 1 and 60 minutes.
This would make the app EVEN more secure than what it already is...

Android | You have been hacked by Google

Google is watching us more than ever?
When Android know about you anything.

In this 5 minuts article we describe all the very weird things in Android, and we want to ask you - what do you say?
at first we saying that all of this is on built-in apps. Why to do that? ads custom, know what to upgrade for android, control in market, corperation with government entities like many times is past (Events in France on cooperation with cellular companys and government that they wiretapping your calls), read news, think about it - how google now know where you live, what you doing, where you visited.. and also you should take a look in this - https://history.google.com/history/ your all seraches and history.
One. (Shown all over the news) - "Next Android version will change the way the root work":
We asking, what happend to our "good times" Android experience? ("Open source", "Android will be different then iOS" Etc.)
Google want her privacy in system files, in control, in blocking permission root apps.
Keep reading, this was to notice what happend right now.
Two. Suspicious processes running in the background all the time
Three. Very Strange Permissions:
Hint: Android asks for credit card information on first running. ok its useful, fast, and great reason to take this details.
"Connect & Disconnect from Wi-Fi" - Dont cofuse we talk about other apps like "Factory Mode" etc. that running all the time in the background, why it need to turn on\off the Wi-Fi..? there is the main Wi-Fi settings, where YOU control the Wi-Fi, this is auto control. probably you not even see when Wi-Fi turned on it self. check in your built-in apps. its comfortable, came with the phone - you not need to install or update apps. and this came to many apps that nod need this. come on check it on few apps.
"Share your device's screen with another device" - Wow that was cool if was a built-in TeamViewer app! (wtf?!)
"Modify battery statistics" - in other words fake the battery status and deleting statistics, so the battery stats is not secure way to know what working and used the battery (!). (After long waiting for explain, they told me that is wrong spell. sure. the great perfect Google wrong in spell 4 official versions?! no, its modify.
"Downloading files without notification" - (you dont even noticed that something download, maybe right now)
"Add or modify calender events and send emails without host's permission" - In other words, the hosts is you. and emails send from you to another "mysterious" people. very smartly they put "Add or modify calender events" in start to hide this.
"Internet Browser" have permissions to - "Record audio" , "Take pictures and videos" (Allows application to take pictures and record video at any time).
"Mobile Tracker"! - Service that connects to the Internet and if your phone stolen you can lock him, wipe the device.
But I dont noticed that he canto call, send & read sms, record audio, share screen, read browser data (cookies etc.) and history, set an alarm in "Clock" (?), Access to NFC and more.
This was should be great options to my stolen phone. and very hurt for my private info.

Four. System applications linked to each other. - if one is turned off - problems starting.
The Android system built like this, that system applications linked to each other - you can check with few programmers that know this.
This is a nightmare of every programmer, when something get wrong, - to start searching problems and fix them. maybe rewriting the whole code. but google wants this.
Well, its like we'll have to install GTA V,ARMA 3, and COD:Ghosts to play Pacman.
You have turned off one - the other will continue to operate
Five. Permissions granted to applications that not supposed to do that
Gallery - can record audio, calling, etc.
Adjust color (with this you set sharpness and color tone, this of course very small option in Settnigs) - can view sms, terminate processes, access Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and etc.
And more like in "Three".
Thanks for helping, google.
very small part of "Help" premissions. check it.
Six. Almost every app has strange permissions that it should not have, check it yourself.
Seven. p.s.
We expected that Google, the "can do anything" company, in couple versions of Android will greatly improve the system and make it run faster.
(damn, windows 7 has same requirement) Although that iPhone have barely one processor with two cores, running like a cannon against my SGS4.
True, it is Android, we have higher resolution and quality and have more things to handle - but we espect that this 4*4 cores (SGS4) "computer" do more.
Maybe just another hidden processes in the background causing it?
Factory Mode - for some reason gives all permissions that you can in cell-phone. Why this running on your device now?
Eight. The Smart Google
In few words they do on you the trick. they can say that all permissions need for some reasons, but is great reason to connect you to the Internet 24\7 365 day in year. and the all hints points on something else.
Last. We care.
we care that "Hangouts" replacing our default message apps (why to put 2 applications of texting? its like to use the same cameras to take picture. one for us, one for google.)
some people dont care, and they are right. we become indifferent that all the world dig in our lifes. but it should not like this.
what you feel if steal your credit card, watch on you in bathroom, have your "deleted" snapchat images, take a look on your sister?
And what if in one day I waill want to use this?
mmm.. not really
What you say?
for the great people that read this - you must change it, do somethig. take the glove.
Oh boy....
Sent from my GT-I9505 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Google SUCKS! From now on, I will be boycotting all google products. I will also be boycotting any other brand who violates MY privacy.
Point #1 is all wrong, there's a big diference between Android as an OS and AOSP.
AOSP = open source
All the rest = closed source
I have been using App ops starter and is closely watching the permission i should allow. but still i doubt that GOOGLE is not letting us to put various restriction that should have been there.
Damn it GOOGLE.
Mod Edit
All very interesting , but not relevant to the S4
Please take this to OT

[APP][2.2+] TextSecure Private Messenger

Today’s release of TextSecure is the final step in the transition from a private SMS app to a private asynchronous IM app that does not depend on SMS/MMS.
Using the lessons we’ve learned from the SMS environment over the past four years, we’ve developed an open protocol for asynchronous chat that enables private communication instantly with friends, private groups for realtime collaboration, and the ability to quickly and seamlessly share media privately – all without depending on SMS.
High Privacy, Low Friction
At Open WhisperSystems, our objective is to advance the state of the art for secure communication, but also to reduce the friction required for ordinary people to make use of it. We want everyone to have access to advanced secure communication methods that are as easy and reliable to use as making a normal phone call or sending a normal text message.
With an advanced ratchet, enhanced deniability, and an asynchronous orientation, we believe the TextSecure V2 protocol represents a significant step forward in what’s possible for the asynchronous chat environment today.
We’ve also made a substantial effort to simplify the typically difficult user experience that comes with end to end encrypted communication. The new TextSecure protocol doesn’t require a round trip key exchange process, eliminates half-open sessions, and is lightning fast – all without compromising forward secrecy or deniability. This creates an experience that takes encryption entirely out of the user’s way. A user simply sends a message, and it’s encrypted end to end, every time. Unlike other IM services, there is no distinction between “private” chats and “normal” chats. Private is normal.
Private Group Chat
The new TextSecure also introduces support for private group chat. Users can now create groups with a title and avatar icon, add their friends, join or leave groups, and exchange messages/media, all with the same end-to-end encryption properties pairwise TextSecure chats provide.
In keeping with our efforts to develop the most privacy preserving protocols possible, the server does not have access to group metadata such as lists of group members, the group title, or the group avatar icon.
An iMessage Experience
The new TextSecure for Android allows for two possible configurations. By default, TextSecure is configured as an “integrated” chat app with an “iMessage” like experience. TextSecure acts as a normal SMS/MMS app when communicating with non-TextSecure users, but will send messages encrypted over the data channel when the recipient is also a TextSecure user.
Like iMessage, TextSecure uses a color scheme to indicate which transport a message was delivered with. If the data channel is unavailable, messages can fall back to the SMS transport, and secure sessions can transparently migrate back and forth between the two transports.
A WhatsApp Experience
Alternately, users can configure TextSecure to function similar to WhatsApp, where messages are only ever sent or received over the data channel. In this configuration, communication is restricted exclusively to secure communication with other TextSecure users.
A Visual Refresh
We’ve also done a visual refresh of the entire app, adopting a more modern look and a new icon.
Connectivity Across Networks
The new TextSecure push transport is a federated protocol, and inter-operates transparently with the CyanogenMod deployment of the TextSecure protocol to their 10MM+ users a few months ago.
Now that the new TextSecure for Android is out, Christine and Fred assure us that TextSecure for iOS will be available in short order. The protocol includes support for users to have multiple devices, and Matt is working on a desktop client.
As usual, if you’d like to help with the project, you can contribute code, help file and manage issues, help translate, or donate funds to our BitHub tracker. As with any major new release, there will be bugs, so please help us find them.
In the mean time, get started with the new TextSecure for Android, download it for free!
DISCLAIMER: I'M NOT THE AUTHOR. THIS IS AN OPEN SOURCE PROJECT AND I ENCOURAGE YOU TO CONTRIBUTE TO IT IN WHATEVER WAS YOU CAN.
I use TextSecure since a few days before I had WisperPush, but I thought that it's a messenger like WhatsApp but i can only send messages via sms, if I deactivate my mobile network(airplane mode) and try to send a message via Wifi it doesn't work but a friend has also TS and we both has shared the key?
Edit: I've reinstalled it,... now it works
It would be nice if you can check if the message arrived, when you send it via internet.
Very nice, waited until the iOS app was out before I installed. Looking forward to more features!
I would like to see notification sound and vibration pattern settings in the future!

[APP][5.0+][v0.9.0] Tag My Knowledge - Personal Knowledge Management made simple

Tag My Knowledge
Personal Knowledge Management made simple
Quickly store and categorize bits of knowledge you find in books, videos or podcasts and convert them into habits that change your life.

Hey everyone!
I love watching podcasts and CEO interviews on YouTube. However, I quickly ran into some big issues (see below).
Luckily, since I'm a developer, I can fix these for myself. The solution turned out to be pretty good, so I decided to share it
Issues that I ran into with existing solutions (ie. what this app is trying to solve)
Issue #1: Knowledge is buried under grocery lists
Originally I used Google Keep, but at some point I realized that everything below a certain "scroll threshold" was lost forever unless I specifically searched for it.
To combat this, Tag My Knowledge uses what's called spaced repetition.
By reading something 10 times with time in between, you remember it much better than If you read it 10 times in a row.
That's why Tag My Knowledge uses a feed-approach. Every day, you see random items so you subconsciously build habits out of them!
Issue #2: Note taking wasn't fast enough
Speakers talk pretty fast and while you can pause & rewind YouTube videos, it quickly becomes annoying. Even worse, you can't rewind live events.
Tag My Knowledge is optimized to keep up with that. Adding knowledge takes as few clicks possible.
That way, you never miss some important off-topic nugget never again!

Features
A single piece of knowledge can consist of a title, rich text description, a source (with optional link), tags and one or more categories
You can manage all of your tags in one place
You can modify your list of categories (up to 5). You can change name, icon and order.
The first 4 will be shown as tabs at the bottom for quick access
You can filter for tags
You can toggle feed/history mode. History mode shows all your knowledge in chronological order (within that category), feed is essentially random (algorithm behind it but whatever)
Works on multiple devices (currently only on Android & via Progressive Web App)
Download / Where to get it
Website (here you can also sign up for a newsletter to get notified on updates)
Progressive Web App (also works on iOS)
Huawei App Gallery (doesn't have Google login, otherwise equal. Screenshots are outdated, app isn't.)
As of right now, the app is completely free and everything that's in it will definitely stay free forever.
That being said, if there's enough interest, I'll probably create some sort of premium plan so I can continue to improve it.
I have so many ideas on how to improve this, but I can't afford to invest my life into it without being able to pay my rent.
Please comment below and let me know what you think about it
Specifically, these are the question on my mind right now:
- Is this useful to you at all?
- What solution are you currently using, if any?
- I would use this, if ...
Have a great day!

Basically a good idea, but why do we need an account for it? I'd rather keep my notes local. If need be, put them in a folder to sync via the preferred solution (e.g. NextCloud).
Thanks for the feedback!
I thought about that as well, but in the end I decided against it for a few reasons:
- The app is built for simplicity and having to set up your own sync solution would go against that
- Synchronization between mobile & web versions can never be completely seamless & instant when relying on cloud storage providers or custom solutions. I also found this way too easy to mess up on both sides.
- Local-only data is inherently lost when you lose your phone. This is obvious, but originally I was the only person I developed for and I constantly softbrick/switch/factory reset/upgrade my device so I'd rather not risk that or take the time to do manual export/import
I also have a lot of features planned which simply aren't possible (or become incredibly tedious) when the database is local.
- A twitter bot to tag knowledge automatically when you @ it (similar to readwise.io).
- In-app knowledge sharing (if I get the chance, I'd build some optional social media features into the app). For example you could share your knowledge in exchange for a custom email feed of other people's knowledge that could be interesting for you
- A chrome extension

Right, that does sound interesting and well thought-through. But in the end of the day that approach is exactly *not* what I am looking for. Thanks anyway.

[CLOSED] How BIG TECH tracks you....

Some of the things that BIG TECH (Google, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and others) uses to identify you:
1. IP address
2. Browser Fingerprinting
3. Device Fingerprinting
4. Location, Nearby scanning, Beams, GPS
5. Advertiser ID
6. Always Listening (voice commands)
7. Your demographic details
IP address
This is the same for all devices connected to the same WiFi network. This address is called the Public IP address, which is the address assigned to your WiFi router by your ISP. Using this, Big Tech can track all the accounts that use the same IP address. So, Big Tech knows who all are living in the same household, who all are working in the same place (if you connect to your work WiFi), etc.
Browser Fingerprinting
Websites can track full details of your browser, which in conjunction with other forms of tracking (like cookies), can be used to create your virtual profile, your interests, your online activities, etc. Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc, have trackers in pretty much all the websites, so even if you don't use your account in those sites, BIG TECH can still track you by connecting the dots.
Using Private/ Incognito browsing isn't all that private as one is made to believe.
Device Fingerprinting
This is similar to, but more advanced form of tracking compared to Browser Fingerprinting. They record details of your device like make, model, display resolution, operating system, time zone, GPS, sensor data, Information About Things Near Device (i.e Wi-Fi Access Points, Cell Towers, Bluetooth-enabled Devices, etc.).
You can change your browser, network, location, etc. But you are unlikely to change your device as frequently. You can be easily tracked using Device Fingerprinting.
Location/ Nearby Scanning/ WiFi/ Low Energy Bluetooth/ GPS
You can change your physical location, but it is highly likely that you will move with your family. So even if you use completely new accounts, they can still track you through your family members' accounts. That's how Facebook recommends same 'Friends' to you even if you use a new account.
Your device is constantly communicating with the tech around you - mobile towers, WiFi routers, Bluetooth devices, GPS, etc. That setting of 'Scanning Always Available' under Location Settings helps in improving this accuracy.
A new technology is in works that will allow tracking of your device even when it is switched OFF! Spyware is essentially being installed at the hardware level and your devices would be under surveillance 24x7.
Advertiser ID
As the name suggests, this is your Virtual Identity containing your interests, online activity history, etc that is provided to advertisers (even if anonymously) for targeted advertising.
You CAN reset this ID on all devices (Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, etc.) to reduce the amount of information advertisers know about you (even if anonymously).
Always Listening
The most privacy disrespecting feature. Your gadgets are constantly listening to you, waiting for your commands. All your personal conversations are recorded. Next feature will be Always Watching! They will develop some interesting application for this feature (like they did for identifying the music around you) and sell you devices that is constantly recording you using cameras!
Your Demographics
Name, Phone number, Date of Birth, Gender, and other details that you provide when creating your account. They have pretty much made it mandatory to give correct information without which you cannot create an account.
Your personal details, contacts, meta data of pictures and videos on your device, etc everything will be linked to identify you from your virtual identity.
CONCLUSION
No matter how hard one tries, he will leave several footprints about himself if using tech. The only way to avoid tracking is to completely give up on use of gadgets and communication devices. VPNs/ TOR Network won't protect you.
FUN FACT
ALL BIG TECH companies, including chip makers are American companies!
Software: Google, Apple, Microsoft, etc.
Hardware: Qualcomm, Intel, AMD, Apple, etc.
Social media: Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, etc.
Streaming Services: Amazon, Netflix, etc.
News channels too (there are no journalists anymore; only media-persons)
....you name it: all are American companies! This isn't a mere coincidence!
So you know where all the data goes! And who does all the spying!
I bought a brand new phone and set it up WITHOUT any account. I have installed a few apps, including Revanced Extended with microG (not signed in to any account).
Guess what:
The YouTube feed is pretty much filled with the same recommendations and content from channels I have subscribed to on my other devices where I have signed in. 🫣
Here's another example:
How was my store visit inside a shopping mall tracked?
I was inside a shopping mall yesterday for a few hours. One of the shops/ store is an outlet of a well known electronics retail chain. I have purchased something there several months/ years back. I was inside this store yesterday too, but only...

Exactly what was written in OP.
Fake narrative building, creating false public perception and influencing people's mindset is why this is done. Everyone knows who controls all the technology and who has all the money in the world.
Yet people believe in the Chinese CCP crap because the biggest spy in the world has created an infrastructure that sells such stories to them.
That's all metadata! And you can stop most of it by installing Adguard with some common filters and setting require VPN for all connections. (this setting is hidden on quite some China OS Chinese phones).
And the same inforamtion is tracked by Chinese phones on global OS.
If you have a China OS Chinese phone - your actualy message content is censored and tracked. Get two China OS phones and send a message with some text about Winnie the Pooh and Xi Jinping - good luck receiving it...
You can notice that after any text message you receive the China OS spyware will send information to Chinese servers.
But yeah - it's okay for their global phones. Just not for the ones for Chinese market (=China OS). Cannot remove their dialer software because than their phone content analysis wouldn't work anymore and so on.
Just be happy you don't live in China. Spying there is on another level - but they are quite transparent about it. Everyone knows about it - unlike Europe/USA where people aren't so aware of what is tracked and what not.
It will upload any website you visited and much more.
And yeah an Iphone China OS or Samsung China OS will spy/censor just like a China OS Chinaphone. It's government policy (and that was the reason for google back some years to pull out of China/not start there. But that was in the good old don't be evil times - which are sadly over.

Some day it will be known that VPN was a big scam. It was just a tool used by spying agencies.

That is the whole point. As mentioned in the last section of OP, everything you do online is being tracked continuously. Just that one country does it openly, while the other does it stealthily, covertly, and on a much much larger scale.
Tor was created by DARPA / Department of defense. They track everything.

And they have made people believe they cannot be tracked.

Local VPN surely isn't scam. You can check rules yourself. Other VPN depends on the provider
