Hello everyone,
So recently I noticed that my storage is fuller than it should be. I made a little investigation and it seems like when I take a photo/video it somehow uses twice as much space. As seen in the screenshots, Images take nearly the same amount of storage as Media Storage App. And Media Storage is just an app that is needed when you view, download, play, and stream images, videos, audio files, and other media files. And usually, it doesn't use that much space. I took a long video to check whether it changes in both places - and yes it does.
So my question is: do my photos and videos duplicate? And how I can stop that because it uses a lot of memory?
My phone is Motorola edge 20 with Android 11.

I have a pretty specific question...
I'm a travel photographer on the side, a lightweight backup solution for my Canon 5d. It uses CF - not SD. Curious - will the host usb port on the keyboard dock allow me to transfer pictures from camera to SD card? to internal memory? anybody willing to try?
Or are there any other ways to do this that I don't know about? currently I use an ipad with a camera connection kit, but I'm not really a big fan of apple's software.
If your camera supports itself as being a mass storage device then yes it should work fine.
couple of issues that i have seen
1. Cannot scan images on camera sd card when inserted into dock. I can see the image files using a file manager and you can view/open the pics one at a time but cannot multi select so that you could flip thru them in gallery. Opening them one at a time is cumbersome especially if you have hundreds of them.
2. Image quality is subpar when viewing your dslr highres pics. I dont expect a lot but clicking on an image should not show a picture with jagged edges. The pictures are not vibrant at all like you would expect them normally to be and how they are shown on my monitor.

For your first issue, you can use Quickpic. I think it scans for sd cards by default, the but even if that doesn't work, you can set folders to scan.

How long did you wait after opening a picture to judge its quality. Android has always taken a few seconds to fully render the quality of a picture in the gallery app. We are talking about low quality, small files taken by the phone camera. I would imagine these files are much larger and would take much longer to open at full quality see as they are from a much higher quality camera.
In short, I hope you were not judging the quality based on the preview that is provided before the full pcture loads.

Hmm...I was accessing the sd card (class 10) via the slot in the dock and when I'd browse a picture, it would not show up properly and perhaps would not load fully? I was using one of the file managers that I downloaded. I'm pretty sure that I waited a long time since I spent several minutes zooming in and out of the partially rendered pics.
But mirumirai's suggestion for using quickpic worked wonderfully. I can see all the pictures in full clarity even though they are around 5mb average in size.
Thanks for the help!
I have been using my transformer to view 4-5MB images from my dslr. I have been reading from sd card and using QuickPic, can view the pictures in the same maner as if transfered to the main drive.
It takes in the region of 1 second to fully resolve image quality for each image, which is slightly faster than some viewers on my PC.
I have had no problems with copy and pasting the entire image folder from the sd card to the picture folder within the file manager.
Going off the OP's question, has anyone done this with a COMPACT FLASH card, NOT an SD card? I am wondering what would be the best route to take for transfering from my Canon 7d onto the TF. I would love to view files in the field somehow, easily.
I know the Eye-Fi SD cards work as I have seen a youtube video of that but just wondering how the CF cards would work? Anyone?

I'm going to be doing some international travel into locations with very limited bandwidth. I'd like to be able to regularly upload videos to youtube and some photos but still take photos/videos. My problem is that I really need to downsample the video and reduce the photo sizes to upload them where I will be at. Are there any good apps that make it easy to simply downsample a video for youtube upload and (probably another app) to reduce pixel size of photos in bulk ahead of time or during upload?
I don't really ever think about this here since I have about 5Mb upload at home I can just upload to my hearts content. Once that drops to about 128k though that really changes things. I know how to easily do it all on my laptop but really want to just travel with my tablet if possible.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
FYI in case anyone else is ever looking for these kinds of solutions.
Images can be done with Image Shrink. Install app the go to gallery, and select image(s) and share to image shrink. The app will shrink as configured and then share to another image app.

Video is best done with Video Converter Android. Install app then codec as indicated in app. Videos can be selected in app and then batch converted and downsized as configured.

Both apps have lite versions but I bought both to support devs and get rid of ads.

Been more then happy with this one.. use it on all the devices.
Is "Unlimited photo/video in Original quality" valid for all devices and media?
In the Backup portion of the Google Photos app it states "Photos and videos uploaded from your PIxel before 2021-01-16 get unlimited free storage at Original quality"
How about photos/video that weren't created on the Pixel 2's hardware? I'm thinking of things like raw .ARW photos or video taken from my Sony RX100. I haven't yet tried it on the phone but the raw .ARW files upload to Google Photos via the Backup and Sync From Google software on Windows so they may as well on android.

Photos and Videos taken with Pixel phones can upload at original quality. I have tried using other phones, but all I got is backup at high quality. I don't see much difference except the file size on Pixel photo/video backup is bigger.
Now, if you use Windows PC and try to upload a photo/video file, then there are 2 choices(High Quality or Original quality), but you need to set it in the Google Photos settings(default I believe is High Quality)
It appears to me that everything backed up by the photos app goes at original quality. I had not previously used the auto backup feature on my nexus, so when I transitioned all my files to the pixel 2 I let it go wild and it uploaded all my transferred files.
But do the Nexus files take up Google account storage space?
I'm trying to take advantage of the store-everything-as-Original option the Pixel 2 offers, so I'm trying to find out if media is evaluated as "Produced By A Pixel 2" so it falls under that.
Are the photos created on your Nexus -- but uploaded from the Pixel 2 -- counting towards your Google storage or are they exempted from storage use by falling under the Pixel 2's "store unlimited Original photos/videos" grace? I know I can do it all under High Quality, but I'd like to do it as Original and take advantage of unlimited storage option I have by using the Pixel 2 .

I think it's any picture files -- video I imagine they might do more detection or you could potentially backup whole seasons and series worth of episodes and movies... -- simply uploaded from the pixel 2/XL falls under the unlimited original quality photos/videos. I purposefully downloaded all pictures taking up space in my Google Drive, as well as the photos I've accumulated over the years, and input it in my phone; had Google Photos (stock app) "back[it]up", and checked to see if any space was being taken up in my Google Drive...and it was not! I've actually "converted" folders and gigabytes of photos taking up physical space on my devices taking advantage of this feature. Once I saw a hint that Google Photos didn't really discriminate what photos was being backed up, I definitely wanted to test and take advantage if it were possible.
Hope this helps...
Hey cool, thanks for sharing that! I'll have to test it more myself (like with raw .ARW images, which aren't something the Pixel 2 would produce) and see if it'll handle those the same way as .jpg images.
No storage space! Camera app that uploads directly to Gdrive for videos and photos? If it uses social media filters, does graphics that's even better. As long as I can take pictures and vlog without buying more storage.
what apps let you record without a time limit?
I heard that with the stock android camera app the time limit for how long you can record is about 30min, even if you have a big SD Card.
And I heard that the max limit is 4GB but you can't get near it with the stock camera app (and I suppose SD cards won't generally be that big)..
But I would like to record for e.g. > 30min sometimes. So, does that 30min or some time limit exist and if so , what apps let you record for longer than the stock app, storage permitting?
Thanks

SD-cards are FAT32 formatted. On this filesystem the max filesize is 4GB.
@jwoegerbauer well whether you are on point or not, besides the 4GB file size limitation, I heard(though not a good source), that there is a 30min time limit that hits first. And that there are some apps that don't have this time limit. And i'm asking if this time limit exists and what apps don't have this time limit?
And actually, https://pocketnow.com/android-11-finally-lifts-the-4gb-file-size-limit-for-recording-videos-sort-of There is a 4GB Android limitation that has been lifted recently. (So, nothing to do with FAT32). I don't nkow if maybe an SD card can be formatted as other than FAT32 eg exFAT or NTFS., on Android..
They mention that the Open Camera app can shoot larger than 4GB (no doubt not on FAT32).
The suggestion then is maybe the stock camera app can't.
I suppose if the stock also has a 30min limitation, then the open camera app won't.
Added
I notice that one of my videos is 1hr long so I think maybe there isn't a 30min limit!
Though my recording isn't 4K. I just read
"Only 4K video recording has time limit of 4 to 8 minutes(phone to phone varies) as it takes large amounts of storage space on your device and heats up the device to much greater extent. So to eradicate these two things, companies limit the video recording in 4K UHD in their devices. If you are recording in Full HD, 720p or other lower quality and have ample storage space in your phone to save those recordings then you can record as much as you want. "
@gardina
I only pointed out a technical fact. Nothing else.
If others know better, then be it.
BTW: I no longer participate this thread because I'm not interested in your issue at all.
