what apps let you record without a time limit? - General Questions and Answers

what apps let you record without a time limit?
I heard that with the stock android camera app the time limit for how long you can record is about 30min, even if you have a big SD Card.
And I heard that the max limit is 4GB but you can't get near it with the stock camera app (and I suppose SD cards won't generally be that big)..
But I would like to record for e.g. > 30min sometimes. So, does that 30min or some time limit exist and if so , what apps let you record for longer than the stock app, storage permitting?
Thanks

SD-cards are FAT32 formatted. On this filesystem the max filesize is 4GB.

@jwoegerbauer well whether you are on point or not, besides the 4GB file size limitation, I heard(though not a good source), that there is a 30min time limit that hits first. And that there are some apps that don't have this time limit. And i'm asking if this time limit exists and what apps don't have this time limit?
And actually, https://pocketnow.com/android-11-finally-lifts-the-4gb-file-size-limit-for-recording-videos-sort-of There is a 4GB Android limitation that has been lifted recently. (So, nothing to do with FAT32). I don't nkow if maybe an SD card can be formatted as other than FAT32 eg exFAT or NTFS., on Android..
They mention that the Open Camera app can shoot larger than 4GB (no doubt not on FAT32).
The suggestion then is maybe the stock camera app can't.
I suppose if the stock also has a 30min limitation, then the open camera app won't.

I notice that one of my videos is 1hr long so I think maybe there isn't a 30min limit!
Though my recording isn't 4K. I just read
"Only 4K video recording has time limit of 4 to 8 minutes(phone to phone varies) as it takes large amounts of storage space on your device and heats up the device to much greater extent. So to eradicate these two things, companies limit the video recording in 4K UHD in their devices. If you are recording in Full HD, 720p or other lower quality and have ample storage space in your phone to save those recordings then you can record as much as you want. "

@gardina
I only pointed out a technical fact. Nothing else.
If others know better, then be it.
BTW: I no longer participate this thread because I'm not interested in your issue at all.

Recorded videos freezes for second or two!

I love my HTC Desire S.
Only problem I'm having is that camcorder is useless because it's almost impossible to record any videos without these glitches/freezes or whatever you want to call them. Here is an example of what I'm talking here:
youtube.com/watch?v=Ts5SS8a4GrA
You can see video stops at about 0:25 for a moment.
It was shot in high quality (800x480) not even in HD but same things happen when using any quality. It can occur many times in a single video depending on it's length. Preview screen (when you are recording video) doesn't show any freezes like this.
My microSD card is original that comes with the phone - 8GB ScanDisk Class4. I've tested it speed: ~5,5MB/s write and ~20MB/s read - so microSD write speed isn't the problem in my opinion.
Would like to get any help or advises because this annoys me very much.
Thanks.
Try to defragment the card and see if it works.
Usually class 2 cards give this problem.
Additionally try to free up some memory (ram) before running the camera app.
How do you defragment the card?
I would assume connect it to PC and defrag through that program, although would that put my data at risk?
Or can I defrag it through Android somehow?
Have the same problem when replaying every video I've ever recorded on the device and have done since I first had the device when originally using the sd card that came with the mobile
Now have a Brand new 32gb class 4 card still same problems
Fortunately I don't raker many pictures and even less videos

How can I save 4gb+ files on internal SD card?

Hi, I want to know if there was a way to save files of 4gb or more on the internal sd card...

You can't - for the ease of mounting it via USB mass storage, it's formatted FAT.
Honeycomb devices don't have this limitation, on the other hand you have to deal with MTP for file transfer. Can't have both.

thanks for the answer, have another question: if I format my SD card to NTFS... gingerbread will not recognize it when mounted?, it will be readable?
How can I transfer files via MTP, is there a software or something? I google some but I don´t get it...
I want to play 720 & 1080p movies in there, and there are no files less than 4 gigs, so... there must be some solution to this...

With some init script hacking, it might be possible to support an ext4-formatted external SD card. Linux boxes would be able to mount this but not Windows machines.
I have no experience with adding MTP to Froyo/Gingerbread devices, and no real inclination to do so - MTP is a pain in the ass on Linux systems. I'm also running Gingerbread now so I can't use the HDMI output (and I just use my PS3 for that purpose anyway), so in my case I just reencode to 480p and be done with it.
Even 720p encodes for my tablet never come to more than 2-3 gigs, and that's Baseline Profile H.264 which is a decent amount larger than Main/High profiles at the same quality level.

better off formatting ext4 or other linux file system, though i havent tried it and cant guarantee it will work. ntfs and linux dont always mix. the newest linux kenrels can read and write to it (i think) but im not so sure about what is in gingerbread or if ntfs is fully supported in linux yet.
kies can do mtp but i dont think it supports the infuse. you might need icecream sandwhich or honey comb for it to work on other mtp applicaions, i dont think media player will see it. considering the codec support on the gs line and infuse you's think samsung would have though about the 4gb limit and provided a way to overcome it. but they didn't. that would have really set the gs line apart.

Alternatively you can re-encode you movies with Super/Handbreak,etc to smaller size but same quality.
As screen size is 4.5" with resolution 600x480(can't recall exactly) it does not make sense to use 720p or 1080p files of size say 4gb and above.
Just my 2 cents.

just another question... ¿Do you know if Samsung Galaxy SII plays a whole 1080p movie file without lagging like Infuse does?
BTW, I´ve tried handbrake and... it's simply awesome, and so simple to use at once!

no, i have no experience with s2.
handbreak's advantage is that it is damn fast.
you can re size output for 800x480 screen and have smaller size file.

yuup, actually reencoded a huge 1080p (13gb) movie to 720x380 remaining at only 1.5 gb and looks so crisp and clear!!!, great software!
Yeah. Handbrake saves a LOT of space if you're not planning on using the HDMI output features.

I was making some experiments in reencoding one 720p in Handbrake, put it a 720p file of 7 gigs, and forget to resize it at 480p in settings dialog, so file stills at 1280 and setting with an output of 2000 Mb, so at the end, I really get amazed of how the same file stills looking like it was the original 7GB but only 2GB and same exact definition!!! How could this is possible? apparently, this can´t be happen because simple physics, but... well, simply happens.

Blu-Ray movies and such are mastered at ridiculously high bitrates to get every last ounce of quality out of them - basically with the only limitation being "has to fit in 25 gigabytes or you're incurring a double-layer cost".
So often you can drop bitrate significantly without any significantly noticeable losses in quality. There ARE losses, but most humans can't notice them.
Also if it was 720p MPEG-2 (aka a TV recording), it's H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) utterly smokes MPEG-2 in terms of bitrate vs. quality tradeoffs.

Videos are not smooth

Hi,I've got some problem with taken movies. Recorded videos on my LG O3D dont go smooth. Doesnt matter do I record video on internal or external SD videos dont go smooth. here you can see how does it works>>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=688IB2t0YFA
does anyone have similary issue?
I have only tried filming 3D footage but on that I had occasional stuttering though nothing as noticeable as you are experiencing.
There are two probable causes. If you are recording, as I do, to an external SD card check what class it is as for HD recording you really need a class 6 or better card (the higher the class the higher its writing speed, basically).
A second cause is if you have a number of apps or services running in the background as this could eat up your phones 512 Mb memory. You can check this by going to the settings menu and in the applications section see what is running, kill things you don't need and then record another video and see if it helps.
Dave
I've got 10 class memory card installed in phone.Problem still exist when I record videos on internal memory, however on clear, new rom I didn't noticed any lag. If more apps I have videos are less smooth. Now I've got 244app and 50MB free RAM. Propably that is proof that this phone has not got enough RAM.
sent from LG OPTIMUS 3D
Well it's not your sd card then
Surprised you only have 50 Mb ram free, I have lots of apps I have downloaded and usually have between 100 and 150 Mb free even with a number of those working in the background. Have you tried force closing the ones you don't need running and then recording to see if that helps?
As for 512 Mb ram I agree it should have been more, 1 Gigabyte would have been great, it would make the phone so much more enjoyable but aside from a couple of HD games not wanting to run I haven't had any problems caused by lack of memory so it is fine for now but I can see it becoming an issue for some as some high end games can eat up that much memory now.
Dave
Same issue in videos.... optimus 3d seems to be a very lagging phone :\
Videos lose smoothness even if you record on internal memory (fortunately not often).
For now it seems I resolved installing the AcuraTeam rom, which lets you record smoother videos, even on a class 4 SD card.
I suppose the problem is the stock LG kernel...

App for long video recording

is there an app/script/hack for working around the 4gb size limit for video recording? like immediately start another recording when it has reached the limit?
I saw the NTFS trick but I would like to keep the file system as is. Thanks!

So I guess there is no such app exist that auto-split video recording files at 4GB length?
Probably not since the 4gb is a limitation of mp4 itself plus the phone would be busy processing the video it just took.
Supra-charged 3D
Isn't this something you can change in the settings of your camcorder?

mp4 is just a container format, it does not have any limit itself. the 4GB is the limit of FAT32 file system. The phone also writes as it records, so there is no processing done after the recording.
I'm just looking for an app perhaps to automatically record and start a new file again right after the file size limit has been reached, and continuously doing so till I manually stop the recording.

I'm having this very same issue with my device and Galaxy Note 2. I've tried recording in various formats but they all stop just short of an hours duration. I am willing to be that some clever tasker users out there can put together some sort or task/profile that restarts the recording immediately soon as the first recording reaches 59:59 or something like that. Also have it loop at least 3 times i.e. (vid#1 59:59, vid#2 59:59, and vid#3 59:59). If there is any app that could accomplish such a task it would certainly be tasker. The link to the dev page of tasker http://tasker.dinglisch.net/index.html
I don't know if anybody still has this problem... I was having for some time and searching around I was still unable to find a direct response. So, I have been using "DailyRoads Voyager" a gps/dashboard recorder to do the job. It records in 1080 and lower and can record larger files. After I am done I do use a video converter on them to reduce the sizes(converting to the same frame rate), apparently the recording device is not very efficient with compressing. It is not as good as the default recorder but works!
Wait the cool tasker.
While we can record videos on computer eaisly with voice recorder, but a app for mobile is cool.

[Q] recording videos over 2gb?

yes i searched for this first and yielded no relevant results but here is the skinny
i own a lg thrill 4g(fake 4g lol)
i record lots of videos (some in 3d 720 most in 1080)
fat 32 on android(currently stock rom ics) has that pesky 2gb file system limit..
my question is ..is there a way i can switch to ext2 to bypass this limit
if not is there a camera app that will automatically spit a video into say 2 gb chunks AS IM RECORDING
i need to record videos over an hour in length
im willing to sacrifice the 3d videos
but this is really a pain in my butt(jump cuts aren't a solution as i need to capture every second of my subject)
any help would be greatly appreciated!
btw the stock acs rom sucks so id be willing to move away from that (even if it means losign 3d at this point) due to it being so ungodly slow
