May i know what is the varient of your phone? Because the method i followed is to root my E8 M8sX single sim. Im not sure if daul sim will cause a problem or not.
Firstly, you need an unlocked bootloader which can be unlocked through htcdev. You will need to create an account and follow the steps on the website. By unlocking the bootloader, it will wipe away all your data(messages, contacts, Apps etc.) on your phone so do a BACKUP before proceeding on the website.
Next, you will need a TWRP (which is a custom recovery to flash custom ROMs and root). TWRP can be found here. Finally, you need a flashable SuperSU to install through TWRP from here. Save the TWRP and SuperSU zip files on your sd card.
Then, follow the steps in this link. Download Minimal ADB and fastboot. Skip step 2 on the page after the one to download adb and fastboot. Just go straight to command without turning off your phone. Also, there is no need to download TWRP and SuperSU again from the page.
If you encounter any errors during the rooting process, just stop and get back to the state where the device is still bootable and for daily use. Ask me and i will try to reply ASAP.
**Disclaimer: I am in no way responsible if your device becomes unusable after the rooting process. Btw, Nisekoi is quite fun to watch but becomes draggy in the manga

Thanks for your reply. My phone is m8sx single sim just like yours. You mean by "stop and get back to the state where the device is bootable" is restore the phone from it backup?

Well, yeah thats what i meant. One way just to be safe would be after flashing twrp, boot to homescreen. After that then flash SuperSU. Other than while unlocking the bootloader will wipe away everything, i don't think flashing twrp and supersu will cause your phone to brick. Now knowing that we have the same varient then things should also go smoothly with yours. Do take note that the phone may take longer to boot after factory reset.
Just in case you didn't know, in order to boot the phone to recovery is by pressing power and volume down at the same time while the phone is off.

I can't find the fast boot option under settings/power.

They removed the fastboot option for lollipop. I think they set it on by default but it seems to boot slower compared to kitkat.

I still get stuck at the unlocking the bootloader. In step 5, it asked to enter this command "fastboot oem get_identifier_token" but it says that " the program cants start because AdbWinApi.dll is missing". I did follow the steps correctly.

yup it works for me. but now i can't flash the TWRP recovery. it keep saying " error: can't load twrp.img ". i did change the name of the twrp file to twrp.img in my pc.
i did managed to flash the custom recovery... the instruction is not clear. so i search for other information. it turns out i hve to put the twrp file in the same folder as minimal adb

Thanks. As simple as the process was, as a noob (first time attempting this) I was really concerned about screwing this up and bricking my tablet.
The one you linked to was one of the ones I was considering and hence my question regarding what works with what I have already done. The noob mind (mine anyways) finds a dozen questions at every turn. In this case I would ask the following:
Q-Do I have to use Kang TWRP?
Q-How is it different than the TWRP I used on my Tablet?
Q-Will I need to constantly change TWRP versions depending on what ROM I want to use?
Q-Is there a danger to switching TWRPs?
Q-Doesn't flashing SuperSU after I flash Gapps overright and erase SuperSU or is there some unique way to flash (push?) both at the same time?
Q-Many more I'm sure!
To the noob, almost all the instructions I read appear to be written for someone who as done this many times. The level of detail needed for the novice is just not there or lost between the jargon used, with many steps not fleshed out because the author assumes a certain level of expertise.
I will definitely read these threads as best I can, but in the interim, is there any ROM that are known to be able to be flashed via the TWRP I currently have? The author of the version I used certainly made it seem like it was that simple, load the ROM/ zip file onto the MicroSD card and when in Custom recovery simply use the INSTALL feature to navigate to the file and press a button to flash and ..."BAM!!" you are running a new ROM.

That version of KANG appears to be dead, as the thread has been closed and abondoned by the OP. So no new questions or help there....
Can I install that version over the top of my current version of TWRP the same way I did the first time? (change file to TWRP.blob etc.)

Yes you can.
However Kang TWRP is a xxx.img file. You also can use your current TWRP and flash the image file. Attached you will find an image and a zip version.

Ok, so if I read your comment correctly, I can copy the .img file to an SD card, boot into recovery and flash it from there OR I can fire up fastboot and the same steps I originally did to install custom recovery from my PC to accomplish the same thing... either way I should still have custom recovery, but with the KANG version. Right?

Well crap. I put the .img file on my SD card and boot the tablet into recovery, I flashed the .img file to the rovery not boot partition. All appeared well....but when I go back to see if I have KANG recovery, it hangs anbd says Booting Failure Unrecoverable bootloader error (0x000000000)
EDIT: After I cleaned my pants, I used abd and fastboot to flash the original Blob file using my PC. This restored the custom recovery. I was freaking out for a few minutes.
I didn't change the file name of the kang .img file. Should I have done something different?
EDIT: Successful recovery to Kang2.8.7.2 !! :good::good: I used adb and my PC to send the .img file (renamed "twrpkang.img" for simplicity) and it worked great. I'm a pro..:silly:

Not sure what I did wrong. I tried to do it within the old recovery menu and it hosed it. It found the file and mounted it successfully, but it seemed weird to be within the partition I was overwriting and writing to it. Kind of like you cant install windows while your using Windows...
The new version is much smoother.... Thanks, not to learn about this gapps super SU and how to flash all of these and in what order along with the ROM..as well as this wipe vs format thing...so confusing...

[TWRP][RECOVERY] Asus ZenPad 3S 10 Z500M
The next big step forward for Z500M development is here!
This is the first working custom TWRP recovery for the Asus ZenPad 3S 10 Z500M [P027], based from TWRP v3.2.1.
diplomatic and I had both been working on a port separately, and I offered to test his version. In a few hours we worked out a functional and install-friendly version.
Please NOTE that this is NOT an official TWRP. After this post, I'll be working on making the port official and update here.

diplomatic, who has been instrumental in propelling Z500M development forward. He worked on the issue of perm root and discovered and revealed important intricacies of the Z500M restrictive bootloader. By the end of Dec 2017, he developed a method to unlock the Z500M bootloader based on his amazing work with the Z380M. With amartolos as his testing assistant, the Z500M bootloader unlocking tool was quickly developed and released Jan 5th 2018.
overkillZ, who in Sept 2017 introduced us all to rooting the Z500M
toineh, who did legwork of establishing temp root by manipulating system permissions & redirecting files through adb. Then he took the boot.img posted by LGiki, explained how to patch it through Magisk and posted the first patched boot image. He also served as a guiding voice on this front.
amartolos, who first attempted perm flashing the patched boot image of toineh's method and worked with diplomatic on the developments afterward, which led us to today. Also has served as a guiding voice.

REQUIREMENTS
ZenPad Z500M tablet, upgraded to Android N
Bootloader Unlocked, using Diplomatic's tool. Tablet should be showing Orange State during initial bootup.
Root with Magisk installed, Permanent Root preferable
BACK UP YOUR INTERNAL USER DATA, in case you need to factory reset
TWRP for Z500M recovery image file [twrp-3.2.1-0-z500m.img]
Knowledge of adb/fastboot and basic Linux shell
INSTRUCTIONS
Ensure REQUIREMENTS are all met
Ensure to RE-READ all instructions and understand them before starting
Reboot into fastboot mode
do fastboot boot twrp-3.2.1-0-z500m.img, TWRP should boot up in a few seconds. The theme should be blue.
In TWRP, go to BACKUP and back up Boot, Recovery, Data, System and SystemImage. Full backup took me about 10GB of space.
Copy the created TWRP Backup to your PC or an external location for safekeeping
Copy the TWRP twrp-3.2.1-0-z500m.img to tablet storage if not done already.
In TWRP, go to INSTALL, select Install Image and choose the twrp-3.2.1-0-z500m.img. Installation should only take a few seconds.
Unplug from USB and Reboot back into Recovery through the REBOOT menu
If installation went well, TWRP should boot up in a YELLOW theme. From my testing, I'm confident it is functionally the same.

GOING FORWARD
I successfully tested replacement of Magisk with SuperSU. My steps taken were:
"Completely Uninstall" Magisk through the Magisk Manager
reboot directly into Recovery
INSTALL a previously downloaded official SuperSU zip file & REBOOT
I very much enjoyed this process of developing for uncharted regions of Android technologies and I owe all of that to the existence of this forum and the people in it. Next, I am reading up on porting a custom ROM, LineageOS looked very nice. I'll update here with significant progress until I get capability to start new forum threads. ADDITIONAL WARNING: At first boot of TWRP, it will ask you if you want to keep system read-only. Touch the Keep Read Only button at this screen and only mount system in read-only mode if you need (rarely needed). This is necessary because of dm-verity and is no different than most Android 6+ devices. Unless you have unlocked your bootloader and installed permanent root with dm-verity disabled, mounting the system partition in r/w mode will make changes to it and your tablet will instantly become unbootable.

Hey guys I hope you can help me I had my Z500m partially rooted using the patched Magisk boot method and accidentally erased some stuff before I could permanently root it. Everything snowballed and all I have now is my firmware stored on pc I can get to fastboot mode but I have stock recovery still. can i flash my firmware through fastboot? I’ve been researching and it seems with Mediatek it’s different or at least not as simple. All searches keep coming up for Zenfone and I’m lost. Apologies if Im in wrong area.

Nice work! I've got the Z500KL version of this tablet, so I'm hoping to port twrp to it at some point as well; if you have any tips or advice that might help it would be much appreciated! Although I'm fairly experienced with Linux this would be my first time working with Android, so I'm not sure if I'll succeed, but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway.

To install TWRP, you must have some way to flash it and a bootloader that's either unlocked or doesn't care about unofficial images. I'm not sure that's possible in Z500KL. Look into that first. The Z500KL is about as much a version of this tablet as a Lenovo Tab4 is a version of this tablet. They are completely different platforms, just with a similar model name.
I've already managed to unlock the bootloader of my Z500KL and I've got fastboot working with it too, what I'm stuck on now is actually compiling twrp - I've already had a look at the guide here, but it's not very useful considering there are no .mk files for this model yet. If I had some idea about where to start I'd at least be able to start experimenting with the kernel / twrp source files and see where that leads me.

Oh, cool. How did you unlock it, btw? I know Asus makes you jump through hoops or doesn't allow unlocking altogether...
In case there is no device tree source (almost always), you start with an existing source tree for a phone with a similar platform. Then you adapt it for your device. Usually it's just a few changes, like the model numbers and importing your kernel. A quick search showed that the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 might fit the bill. Check out this thread for a TWRP build that someone has made for it...

Sounds good, I'll see what I can do when I get the time.
For some reason one of the official unlock tools for a different model worked on my tablet - I believe it was for the ZE552KL, although I could be wrong since I can't seem to install it any more ("the package conflicts with an existing package by the same name"). I'm definitely unlocked though since I can flash using fastboot without any errors...
Since we now have official unlock. Any chance at custom roms for this device? I would love to see it get some oreo love.

Just get your boot.img from the stock firmware and run it through MM to make a rooted patched boot img. Then using this patched image from your PC, do either 'fastboot flash boot' or 'fastboot boot' (for tethered boot) to obtain root. Done.

Basically, just do the procedure in this post. It's not that complicated. Reading through that thread may also help. Oh, and you have to unlock your bootloader first with an Asus unlock tool, as soleera has mentioned. I think the tool for the Z500M may work. It's essentially the same app for every device.

Step 1: Patching the stock boot.img
- Install MagiskManager apk on your android device
- Copy the stock boot.img of your device to your phone's internal storage or SD card
- Launch Magisk Manager app
- If prompted to install Magisk, select NO THANKS
- If you are using a samsung device and wish to flash using Odin, then select Options > Settings > Update Settings > Patched Boot Output Format > img.tar )
- Select Install > Install > Patch Boot Image File >
Navigate to the location of the stock boot.img you copied earlier on, then Select it
-Magisk Manager should begin downloading the magisk zip file used for patching
-Once download is complete, MagiskManager will automatically patch the boot file and store it under SDcard/MagiskManager/patched_boot.img[.tar]
Step 2: Flashing the patched boot.img
You have a variety of options to flash the patched boot.img depending on your chipset (e.g Mediatek MTK, Spreadtrum SPD, Qualcomm QLM etc ), the resources you have and your skills. Note that some flashing methods might require you to rename the file to boot.img
- For those using MTK devices and have the specific scatter file for their device, you can flash the patched boot.img using SP flash tool or Miracle Box
-For those using SPD devices and have the PAC file for their device, you can flash the patched boot.img using Research download tool by replacing the stock boot.img with your patched boot.img
- For those using Samsung devices and then use ODIN to flash.
-You could also use Fastboot to flash the patched_boot.img or boot.img (if you've renamed then the command must reflect the file name) as outlined below
How to Flash patched_boot.img using Fastboot
-Setup adb and fastboot on your PC.
-Unlock the phone's Bootloader (if its not unlocked)
-Re-enable USB debugging on the phone
-Connect the phone to the PC via USB cord
-Boot into fastboot mode.
-Flash the patched_boot and reboot by typing in the commands below into adb CMD prompt window and hitting Enter after each line -

Does the bootloader need to be unlocked still? I have a S6 Active (sm-g890a) that I would love to root with this method but I haven't wanted to try anything in fear of bricking. Sorry for the newb question but I'm a noob.

if the bootloader checks boot.img, it will fail since Magisk patches the boot.img and it will have an invalid signature.
This process is only useful for locked bootloaders that do not check boot.img or people who want stock or are stuck with stock recovery.

Hi, the best way is to flash a custom recovery beforehand. But if you can't find you can go for this method but bootloader must be UNLOCKED. And also if anything goes wrong even if the bootloader is UNLOCKED , the phone will only be soft brick not hard brick. But the best thing will be a custom recovery method.

If your device bootloader is UNLOCKED, then you are good to go. But you should look for a custom recovery for your device and flash magisk.zip . Try this method only if you can't find one. Although every method is risky, you should play safe.

Of course this method is risky yet safe.
If you have a less secure device with UNLOCKED bootloader, you should try this.
But the best thing will be to find a custom recovery or try to port one.
This method should work on most devices.

as i didn't find any Oem unlock option in the developer menu.

So i have an a7 2017 with android oreo or know as 8.0.0. So i want to flash the patched boot image with odin. How do i do that? Like i understand you need oem unlocked but where do you flash it specifically in odin?
Use ADB and the push command.. Be careful what you type.. This thing is a ***** to get the first time.. I wish you good luck

Remember one other thing.. Sammy can not use Fastboot.. It's not that it's bad.. But it just won't in most cases.. Try CROM first to unlock the bootloader

Well i tried to root my phone before with cf auto root and with twrp and it said device verification has failed or something. Will it happen for this device?

I'm having a question: does the new patched_boot.img file also contain my personal data? If not, then what's the best way to make a backup so that when I restore it my phone to be just like I didn't do anything to it(it should have all my apps, files,contacts, accounts etc untouched), but to be rooted? I have a Elephone a4 and I can't set up a custom recovery, that's why I want to follow this tutorial...

Go to smart switch and create a backup.

Works as advertised. One thing i would add to the guide is copying the patch boot img to where the command prompt window is opened. If i was using my noodle, it would be an unspoken, but i forgot and had to reboot once more. This would've saved me about 30 seconds, but i won't complain. I am on the moto z2 force sprint may 1 update with an unlocked bootloader

Greetings to anyone that may see this - I am new to the android root thingy, so I apologize in advance if I have a stupid question. I have only rooted an old tablet with Kingoroot which used SuperSU as the root manager. First off, I want to address TWRP. What is the difference between the OP7Pro "guacamole" and "guacamoleb" (the "b" is very important and intentional.) I tried the regular guacamole image, but the phone didn't seem to want to boot the image. I am going to try guacamoleb. If I flash TWRP, can I boot my device normally? Some sources say yes some no. Thanks for all your help in advance!

Haven't seen guacomoleb (different code name to me implies a different device, but I'm not sure in this case). Just use the file from the dev's TWRP thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...nt/recovery-unofficial-twrp-recovery-t3931322
Unofficial version -75 is the current version. Use the version ( Q versus Pie) for your current Android/OOS version. Might be obvious, but some folks have asked about that.

Per the developer in his thread I linked above, for a stock device, if you flash TWRP, you should root (with Magisk) or the phone might not boot. Some folks have reported that they can flash TWRP and not Magisk and still boot. But there is not point in risking it, since your intent is to root anyway. Fastboot boot TWRP img, then flash TWRP installer zip, and just flash Magisk right away at the same time, then reboot. It's pretty easy.
Also note that installing TWRP is somewhat optional. You can just fastboot boot TWRP img, then flash Magisk to root. It is a matter of preference whether to have TWRP installed or not, and folks are pretty split on this. My opinion, TWRP installed (while not required) does give some potentially useful features if things ever go wrong. I personally don't see much advantage to not installing TWRP, but just my opinion.
Hi there. I ran into similar problems when I was a Root noobie (which I still am). Try the All In One Tool that can be found in this forum. That will help you flash TWRP. It got me there when I was struggling to Flash TWRP.

Thanks for your help. Apparently the Android Q unofficial build -75 doesn't have any mirrors. It's still searching. I like using TWRP because it's convenient if I wan't to flash something else without a PC or Mac.:laugh:

Use adb & fastboot via powershell
Get the adb files in a folder
Copy the twrp.img to the adb folder and on phone /storage/emulated/0/
Get a copy of the twrp installer on your phone anywhere works
Open adb folder
Hold shift and right click a empty space
Open powershell & type
Adb boot bootloader
Fastboot boot twrp.img (you can drag and drop the file into powershell if your lazy like me)
Flash the twrp installer on your phone
Done?
Reboot and go back into recovery to see if it works
Tip for updates:
After you get the update
Flash via twrp
Then flash twrp (so you don't need your computer)
Flash magisk if you want superuser
Reboot
Reboot recovery
Flash magisk again (seems it takes two flashes)
None of the tools work for my devices anymore just powershell
All in one doesn't read my fastboot
Cmd has a remote error after attempting to boot it.

Just noticed that the TWRP "guacomoleb" is the "unified" version that works with both the OnePlus 7 and the 7 Pro. Shouldn't make a difference whether you use the "unified" version or the 7 Pro specific TWRP.
