Whatsapp block unknown contact messages - Security Discussion

Hello guys. I've been looking around here on the Forum, for similar thread but didn't find anything.
Could you please tell me, is there a way to block receiving messages/calls from unknown contacts on Whatsapp?
I had been harassed last days (scamming/fishing) and is not a solution block contacts one by one.
Is there any external app that might do the job and help me and other users?
Thanks a lot, keep safe

FB, WhatsApp, etc are malware. Ditch them before they goof up your life.
Never let this type of app run on a device. If you use a social media site connect through the browser only. Social media sites that require their app be loaded to be functional like FB need to be treated like the trashware they are.

"KIK" app

this app is pretty cool lets u chat with people that have blackberry iphone ipods or normally android Love it better than sms and pretty fast. check it out in the market now

I like this a lot too, I like how it shows if it's been read already or not too.
I just wish more people used it
Personally I prefer Whatsapp, 'cause it's more widely used, and havent had any problems with it yet. One time payment for iphone, and free trial period for android

yeah but member this 1 is FREE for every smartphone just need some good updates like add photos and post our own status and would be the shisnetss
does it do group chat?
no group chat
I used Whatsapp and personally like it better, but I like Kik's ability to tell you when it is sent\delivered\read while Whatsapp just tells you if its sent\delivered. I don't need group chat so that's a moot point for myself
PingChat has group chat, shows when send/read, can send pics, video, audio, contacts, maps. And it's free.

I'm currently using pingchat for these reasons. That and Kik was draining the battery on my Incredible :-/
Couple of gripes I have with KiK and had to get rid of it. From my limited use (2-3 days), I learned:
-you cannot log out of KiK.
-it automatically adds contacts without your approval and worse, it lets these contacts know you've signed on to KiK as well. I dont know about others but I dont necessarily want IM access to everyone in my contact list.
-it adds people that you dont even know (saw ppl on my list that I dont know) to your contact list.
-You can get random requests from ppl you dont know to add you just the same.
It seems like a very good beginning efforts but more control and privacy measures need to be put into before I'll try it again.
And, lastly, it was draining my battery ...
These are all from personal use and observation.
Interesting article. It lists upcoming features.

[Q] Security: Why some Apps read SMS

I want to know why some Apps read my SMS...
Downloaded "Go Keyboard" from the market and I think it is a nice App. But when I read the (German) comments, some people complaint about that this App can read your SMS.
What do you think?

If the keyboard should be smart it needs to learn from your typing. One way is to read your SMS/texts or emails.
So you think this is important for the app to work properly and can be neglected?
Maybe sounds like a stupid question but I am still an Android beginner.
Anyway there is nothing important in my messages that I should worry about...

As nothing is save on the internet... it's up to you. The app isn't unknown and widely spread/used, I'd not worry about giving the requested permission.
Other apps however... different story. Rethink your decision everytime an app requests permissions.
If the app works w/o that specific permission is something I don't know. There's an app that can restrict specific permissions, requires root and I sadly don't remember the name right now.
Of course an app can work without certain permissions. But those permission make it more powerful and add functions. If you chopped off your arms, you couldn't entertain someone with juggling could you ?

Just saying
I wondered the same thing! I recently switched to KelLMSKing MIUI Mod and now when I get an SMS, I get two notifications. One is Car Locator wants to read my SMS. It is a GPS App where I can save my car's position in a parking lot and find it easily again. I have no idea why it would want to intercept my SMS messages, so I Deny it.. I looked it up and apparently in some countries, you can pay for parking by text message, and receive reminders that time is running out. That's a feature I'll never use, so I'll just tell it to remember to always Deny that request. The other notification is from Touchdown, which gets my Exchange Server emails for work.. I'm not sure what SMS it would be looking for, so I'll deny them, too
As for the keyboard, I have no idea why it would want to read incoming messages or how that would help it to learn your style.
I think it's more of a perusal of the messages for commonly typed words so that it knows the best words to recommend and predict. Like a scan, to add your speech to the dictionary.
I don't believe any developer is sitting up at night reading my texts. If he is, he should hit me back and help me out with some of my problems. <_<
What is Facebook's excuse then?
edit SMS or MMS
Allows application to write to SMS messages stored on your device or SIM card. Malicious applications may delete your messages.
receive SMS
Allows application to receive and process SMS messages. Malicious applications may monitor your messages or delete them without showing them to you.

Facebook just blatently wants info to target you for advertising... but because theyre so big most people don't care
Facebook needs that permission to verify your account. Afair there's an option to add your mobile# to your fb account.
An application in the market that has been around awhile should be fine. Google will remove malicious software as soon as they know about it. It is new apps asking these permissions that I would be weary of. I use the Go keyboard myself and love it with royal purple neon theme.

Whatsapp avoidance

I looked at whatsapp last year but decided I didn't want the battery drain. I also don't like the lack of security on it. I prefer email - that doesn't lock me in and I can always get it to do what I want.
Unfortunately I've found its so ubiquitous here in Spain due to carriers still charging 10c/SMS that many people will only respond via whatsapp. On adverts they don't provide an email and put 'whatsapp only'.
What can I do? This is like skype all over again (or aim, msn, icq...)
Is there a website that allows replies and sends? Is there an api that has allowed 3rd party interfaces? Is there an email gateway? Is running on a computer in an emulator feasible?

You could disable whatsapp from autostarting which should help on the power drain issue.
Running whatsapp on the bluestacks emulator supposedly works. But make sure you download both programs from reputable sites. There are lots of fakes with viruses/malware.

Whatsapp is becoming really a privacy concern ..
Is any of you guys is using their other brands ; like instagram, FB Messenger. . Etc?
Are you blocking them from accessing private data?
Are you using any modded apps that they don't like?
I don't know but I think that they are trying to link everything they own together .. so if you block any of it in away that the info they get is not identical , they block you, and force you to supply the info they failed to collect from your devices ..

Instagram only stores viewing info for the discover algorithm (on the search tab), they don't allow you to access yours or anyone's viewed information, as in you don't receive any of that data. If you want privacy, why not private your account? And block him as well.

I dont want to make it private because I want others to see my profile just not him. And even if i block him he has another account which im not aware of. but thanks anyway
To be frank, there is no way to find out. Since the company doesn't share any information with third-party apps. The apps available on the internet are fake.
You can read a detailed blog post on this here (https://geekermag.com/who-stalks-my-instagram-profile/)
There is now lol
