Difference between EU Rom and Global Rom? - OnePlus 8 Questions & Answers

I have a OnePlus 8 IN2017 (TMobile) and I wanted to flash Global rom and could not lock bootloader so I switched to EU Rom just now and locked bootloader. Is there a disadvantage/advantage using EU Rom for North American device?

I think that they're the same with little tweaks enforced by european law e.g. warning for listening too long on high volume

Timeframe Question

Hey guys,
Sold my P2XL and am waiting to buy this thing. How long do we normally wait for an international device? Global rom? I'm contemplating buying the CN version and flashing the UK software over it once it becomes available, instead of waiting for the international hardware.
Thanks!
I'm waiting on global too. Don't want to have to unlock bootloader.

Just curious? So, does the chinese phone have a locked bootloader?? I guess we will know shortly! First one gets one let everyone know if the chinese version come with locked bootloader!
Are you saying that there will be 6gb global versions?

So, all the versions will come with locked bootloaders chinese/global roms. How are they unlockable?? Do we have to get the key from Xiaomi?
Normal xiaomi unlocking procedure using the unlocking tool. With my global xiaomi mi mix 2 (bought in Spain Amazon xiaomi store) I even had to use Chinese VPN to unlock it

Wow, that really sucks, the good old days seem in the past where you could plug it in and unlock it with the PC with command line tools.
Has anyone received the Mi Mix 3 and tested unlocking the bootloader yet? Was looking at ordering today. My Mi Mix came with the bootloader unlocked however does not appear to be an option on the selling sites.
Mix 3 is to be released in Taiwan at the end of Nov or early Dec, it'll be the global version. Don't know about other markets.
I ordered mine from geekbuying and hopefully will be mailed soon... I thought it was released 11/1/2018... That's weird...

Mine has been despatched from mi store on AliExpress, Some phones now unlock instantly, not sure how this is working. I've downloaded the program, only for Windows though which could be tricky for me. Maybe the Chinese ones can be unlocked instantly but not global. One person was trying to unlock his phone and managed it in 1 minute, so I explained to someone with mi maax global and it didn't work for him,
I think unlocking is account related, pretty sure you're now only allowed to unlock 1 phone per month.

yes,Unlocking and account association。 Previously MIX2 has been unlocked, it takes 72 hours, now the binding device can solve BL
If you buy from Gearbest/Aliexpress a lot of the time you'll get a vendor ROM therefore an unlocked bootloader.

Yes answered wrong question,. I have bought Chinese version, does it have to be released in you're country for you to buy it? Is a global version not good enough, that should be available in a few weeks.

Global ROM? UK usage

Hi all.
I know the 8th November Xiaomi UK launch is rumoured to include the Mi Mix 3, but I'm not confident that it will. Besides, if it does it will probably be priced in line with other handsets oof similar spec in the UK.
I'm thinking of buying one from a Chinese source such as AliExpress or Gearbest, but I'm now questioning if I'll be able to load a global ROM on it or not?
This article states that phones pre installed with Chinese ROM cannot have Global installed: https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/09/...-miui-china-rom-no-longer-support-global-rom/
Does anyone know if this is the case? When I got my original MIX I was able to flash Global with no problems.
Thanks,
Dom
You can flash a global rom on a China device, but you can't relock bootloader
Ok thanks... So if you can't re-lock the bootloader, I guess apps like Google Pay won't work?

My original Mix 1 bootloader was unlocked, Global flashed, and then re-locked.
Has this changed recently?

Thanks for your help. I believe the UK release is rumoured to be the Mi 8 Explorer. So I will probably order a CN Mix 3 and hope that the China ROM is fully compatible with the UK after GAPPS are installed.
I don't think UK apps such as google pay, and most mobile banking apps, will work if the bootloader is unlocked. But I may be wrong. Anyone know?

This and maybe EU rom out soon, tomorrow global without unlock if you believe the rumors
You guys think there's going to be major hardware differences with the new Global 5g version coming out in 2019 (besides the 5g capability of course) ?OR the rest of the specs should be the same? I'm not sure on ordering one now or wait for the global one to be released. But I'm assuming that the 5g should be more expensive.

I have the mi mix 3 Chinese version 256gb.. Love the phone but I can't get Google Assistant to work. I read in another post that we have to root the phone but I think the Global version will have it all preinstalled and allow the Xiaoai button to control OK Google... TMO variant doubts (bootloader)

I already have my code to unlock the bootloader but I have several doubts.
What ROM model of op7p can I install to make it international?
Once the bootloader is open, can it be closed again?
I ask because it is said that Drm and Google Play support may be broken if the bootloader remains open
Is there any extra advantage to switching to the global ROM instead of staying on the other than the updates?

EU rom questions

It's not only the best phone I've ever used, I think it's clearly far & away the best in class for a phone today and I genuinely want it to raise bars for what's possible with the hardware. As a package, it's remarkable. Best in class overall & in many areas.
I just love it. Nothing is a disappointment. Getting on the xiaomi.eu ROM negated the ill effects of importing a deGoogled phone. It's reliable, charges in ludicrously quick time, is a fantastic camera, seems unofficially pretty splashproof. Feels good, looks good, sounds good, works with everything

based on official, but not official. They do updates over the air normally but not til TWRP is ready. They're a solid group, used them before when I had a Mi 9. From a readme:

Get yourself on to the EU ROM. I know it's going to take a week to get unlocked but it's well worth while. The EU ROM makes this a superb phone and I've come from a Huawei P40 Pro plus that photographically may be better but there is not much in it. I just love this phone now. Got a couple of cases coming and a better screen cover protector.

Ok is there a way back to getting the phone "locked" again on stock rom if i want to return ?
Why do you want it locked again? The EU ROM shows no security issues, it passed every test.
On the Chinese ROM, I couldn't use my Sky Q as it said it wasn't secure and that was before flashing. Now I can use it. Is there a reason you need it locked?
You can flash the Chinese stock ROM if you do want. I have done to test but come back to the EU version. If you need a link to the stock let me know, I did put instructions on the Xiaomi forum but can copy it here.

I mean if i want to return it to default to be able to sell it. Also 2 questions, does the windows way work or not because i read there's issues in the bat file and only linux works. I dont have access to a linux machine currently. 2nd question, when twrp is ready, until then we will have to flash ourselves until twrp is ready to be able to do OTA?
We've found a fix for the windows method which involves swapping out the fastboot. It's all there in the thread for it, I promise...this is for overall love
And if you may sell it, unless you are going to sell to a Chinese person, I think they will appreciate not having to do the change from the Chinese version.
There are warnings about relocking and the possibility of bricking but you can always flash the stock Chinese version again like I did to test it and then back to EU ROM. Unlocking will bind your Mi account to you phones hardware but this can be swapped to another user if you sell.

What are the benefits of EU Rom? I have removed all bloat on China ROM and it's doing fine. Just having and issue of high power consumption of Google Play Services and mdnsd.
See attached screenshots. Plus battery lasts longer, no issues with notification and it reports it's fully secure. For me, it refused to run skyq as the app said it was not secure. Using the EU ROM, it's happy. Have a look at the attached.
How long does Xiaomi normally support their devices? How many "Major" android upgrades do the provide? Like from 10 to 11? And if we went through the EU Rom route will they provide updates for longer?

You can flash China ROM on an Indian variant, or Global (Indian) ROM on a Chinese variant only if bootloader is unlocked. Make sure you check the option "Clean all" in Mi Flash Tool.
Never use the option that says "Clean all and lock" because you may brick your device.

I think once you have unlocked the bootloader, you may be able to lock it using either ROM versions. But I would advise against this because, at least in theory, this shouldn't be the case. When it comes to locking bootloaders, you always need to flash the original firmware of that device variant. I suspect they may have used some other tool to manage this, but I can't really say for sure how they did it. I could try to do the same via Mi Flash Tool just for the sake of experimenting, but it's the only device I have, and I can't risk bricking it.
