Android 12 Official for Pixel 4 XL Today - Google Pixel 4 XL Guides, News, & Discussion

Updating now, will report more when it's complete

Any feedback? My camera actually stopped working despite the fact i had auto-update off on the play store.

Sorry, I got away from this but I haven't had time to really dig into things. Other than the UI, I don't see a whole lot different. I had to reboot twice before Google Assistant would stop crashing but that seems fine now. The one real benefit is that reboots are a LOT faster.

My phone does not cycle between 60 and 90 hz anymore, it forces 90hz constantly (yes, checked the developer options force, that one is NOT toggled).
I opened a thread and asked for other peoples experiences:
-> https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/android-12-refresh-rate-is-broken-90hz-all-the-time.4357517/

You can count me as one too. I'm waiting till pixel 6 pro is in stock locally near me and/or black friday. I was gonna order online till I saw I wouldn't get one till January at the earliest. So, eh I'll wait.

Well, I also made the switch, pre ordered shortly after launch event, got the 6 pro on the 27.10 - best phone I ever had. Magnificent zoom, better battery life, stellar display, 120hz is a big difference if your eyes are still functioning ( there are people out there claim that 30 vs 60 vs 90 Hertz vs 120 cannot be noticed, of course, these people are just ridiculous) even though I do miss Soli, Faceunlock and active Edge

Yes, just follow the directions of the Root thread -- use Safety Net fix installed through Magisk. If you need Magisk Hide, stick with version 23.00 stable. Updated versions had Magisk Hide removed.

Yep... It's a JavaScript error. Try a different or older browser. For me, it didn't work with Firefox and Chrome on my desktop, and also failed with Chrome on Android. I finally got it running with Firefox on Android.
Maybe they want to make sure you're a worthy beta tester...

No experience with OP devices.
Customer service reports and cutting short device support put me off them.

Personaly i don`t agree, i`ve had the the 3/ 3T/ 5 and support is terrible. They can`t get the camera software/ processing up to par and and after only 6 months your device is allready obsolete. Would never buy a OP again. Nokia fills the gap between OEM devices and the Pixels by creating a new affordable Nexus line, imo a golden move for all android purists.
I've got the Beta, and the only issue I have is the 'xxx is running in the background' alerts (which are part of Oreo anyway, and annoying rather than a showstopper), and lock-screen display is not showing the number of e-mails and texts unread.

Roll back is full wipe. Not something I'll be doing anyway. Sticking with oreo
I also updated to Oreo, so far i have found everything snappier.
Just hope they get the ringtone volume back to nougat levels.
camera seems to take slightly sharper images, but no increase in speed taking shots.
All in all this phone is what the pixels should be, all phones should come with a memory card slot.

I am not disappointed in performance, and camera is also good & also installed gcam. They also promised android Q. So, it is not that bad . Although, I was thinking of Oneplus next time because they are known for their software support.

No, performance is fine. The camera is brilliant with the modded camera app. I find all the Xiaomi stuff littering the phone a nuisance although I have removed as much as I can without rooting. (I used to root every phone I owned but need flawless Google Pay - always - and don't want to play whack-a-mole with Google).
I resisted setting up a Xiaomi account - why would I have an account with a phone manufacturer? I'm not really a fan of Mui but with a Google Pixel Launcher it's good enough but I am finding the lack of proper notifications on email less than stellar. I like the Xi charging; OnePlus have never done this. Google's Nexus 4 - I think - did and I was hooked from then on.
There are two issues with Xiaomi really. The over riding issue is security. In my mind timely security updates are essential for any phone manufacturer wanting to be taken seriously. And the second is all the data collection that Xiaomi try to do on me; they seem me as a legitimate subject to data mine and advertise to; I'm not.
So I was hoping the Pixel 4 might finally get Google back on to the straight and narrow that the Nexus phones found. Alas no; it seems the Pixel 4 are stylisticly dead in the water with chin and forehead size bezels as gross as they are. So it looks as if I'll be returning to the OnePlus fold if they can master a through-the-screen camera and finger print scanner on the back where it should be.
I had been running a OnePlus since the the days of the One and went to 3, 5 and 6. I like OnePlus. Reasonable performance; regular updates and close to pure Android.
But liking a phone (why do we still call it a phone - its so much more?) liking a phone is very personal and your mileage will vary from mine.
Any new information about the new update?

Android 10?

Who wants to guess when official Android 10 will drop? I'm going to say it will be sometime early next week!
you mean Android Q
I don't care, I will not change the naming scheme even if it's official.
I can't believe they stopped the dessert naming scheme
Absolutely disappointed
I'm going to say first week of Oct
Whenever the 7T is released
7T will be shipped with Android 10. For OP7 pro, who knows. I'd expect fast update.

That's not that far from beta4 to stable. I'm pretty sure Oneplus is working on stable 10 now.
Rumours say Sept. 3rd:
https://www.neowin.net/news/android-10-is-reportedly-launching-on-september-3
https://www.phonearena.com/news/Android-10-release-date-confirmed-official-Pixel_id118451
I'm guessing Open Beta will be around the end of this week.
OP will preserve the update for the new flagship (T) I guess. Normaly within a view days after release they stable updates will be availeble for the previous devices from the same release year.
This could be soon after 27 sept (presentation OP7T and OP7T Pro en OP TV.)
For now latest Developer Preview is out DP4. From this version on you can update via OTA to bèta builds. So you can try it but dont expext everything is working fine. Its still a preview. If you only want stable builds I presume you need to wait to the beginning of october.

He "doesn't like the new naming scheme". Let him stay in his bubble, it's fine. When the time comes and we're all referring to new builds by numbers (as Google is intending), he'll be stuck on letters still and we'll just sit back with our popcorn and laugh. I completely understand Google's reasoning behind it and even after being disappointed at first, the change makes sense. They said that not all desserts were recognized globally and not all regions have certain letters or know what order they come in. I just read an article the day that I found out about the news, if I can find it, I'll link it.
Edit: this isn't the exact article I was referring to, but close enough. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.th...ficially-announced-new-logo-wordmark-desserts

I really do not care what they call it.
I do know last year One Plus release Android "9" really fast.
We had it long before the Samsung losers.

I got my Pixel 3 (bought from Google) December update on December 2. Be aware it caused a bootloop for a lot of users - I had to wipe my phone to recover. I recommend removing all Magisk modules, if not removing Magisk entirely before updating. You should be able to reroot after the update.
See this thread for reports of the problem. https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-3/how-to/guide-patching-boot-img-magisk-canary-t3964359

Pixel 3 purchased from Google, on Google Fi, and no update yet. Maybe they're delaying it after the initial problems. One previous monthly update took over a week for me as well, but usually I get them within a day or two.

You will notice that comment came from a Galaxy owner. They expect 3 updates over the life of the phone and are running on at best a 6-month old security level at any point. It doesn't matter to everyone.

Depends on what security updates are included. Also, I'm running the Nova launcher and it would be really nice to have gesture navigation support. One reason I got a Pixel is to get to the front of the line after living with other brands of phones that took many months to get updates. So not a huge deal, but Google has spoiled us with updates every month typically within a day or two of the first Monday.
Third Monday, everybody still in update limbo? Perhaps Google just wants to give X-mas gifts this year, but I'd rather they don't hold the update.
No update love for me as of 12/16/2019 4PM EST. I'm tired of waiting and will likely just sideload the update some time this week.
Still waiting. Obviously something is up.

Exactly, I don't understand why people are all up and arms about the monthly being late. Are you in a rush for something? If you have ants in your pants and itching to update something, just reflash your current version to curb your addiction. Everyone needs to relax and stop opening meaningless threads. Be patient and just wait for the update to come out.
Well, maybe because one of the reason they bought the phone is that it should be the first to get each monthly security update. It's google update for google products after all.
Turned out, this month, my S23U is getting update faster than my P7P.
Am not itching or b*tching about update. I just find it funny that google is lagging behind in an area where they should actually excel. Not to mention they only have less than 20 phone models in their portofolio to manage as well. Lol

And how many of the 1 million Samsung devices did get the update this month?
Samsung is known to have a history of taking back or stopping updates due to massive problems. Google isn't the best update company too.
Better late and stable than early and buggy.

Well, consider that samsung, within one month, sold 1.1 million unit of s23 series alone globally, and those series been updated/getting march 2023 update,
i'd say, 1 million then.
number aside. I agree about being bug free. Which, surprisingly, exactly how it goes so far for my s23u.

Probably the same reason people talk about Pixel in Samsung forums. Justify a purchase, feel the need to lord it over if something is presumed better on one, really like their phone and want to convince others to like them too, tribalism, cult status.. all kinds of things. I just take it as entertainment on a Sunday morning. I do like the size specs on the S23 mini but then again it's a Sammy so...
As for the topic at hand I think if Google at least gave a reason for the delay that would appease many folks but that doesn't seem to be forthcoming. There are always little bugs we're hoping to squash with each monthly and maybe that's why everyone is wondering when. Even the columnists at AP and 9to5 are wondering and mashing the update button so for people to say just wait, what's the big deal, cool your jets etc. it is a little disingenuous.

the one big important thing against Sammy is Knox and Warranty lose when bootloader unlock. You w8 big part of new product because you want to keep warranty.
Unrelated to the update scenarios, I'll say this...I had the pixel 5 and swapped to a Samsung note 20 ultra which I used until getting the p7p. If I'm honest, the note has a way more premium feel to it, holding it, looking at it, using it blows the p7p out of the water. I've been swapping back and forth between the 2 and even at 3 cycles old the Samsung holds it's own.
