Does the P4a suffer from poor speaker audio with custom ROMs? - Google Pixel 4a Questions & Answers

Looking for a potential new phone and I've learned that some phones really loose their speaker audio quality/volume with customer ROMs. Any idea if the Pixel 4a suffers from this?

After receiving my phone I immediately installed LineageOS so I can't say anything about a comparison to stock ROM. On LineageOS the audio sounds "normal" and the volume can be turned up quite loud.

Low headphone volume

So we all know the phone is plagued with low call/speakerphone volume. Hopefully it'll be fixed in a software update and it's been identified as a CM issue as well.
The phone also has very low headphone volume both for call and music/general audio. I have a hard time believing that they can somehow double the volume out the headphone port through software. The phone speakers could be louder for general audio as well.
Did they just choose a weak audio chip for the 'Never Settle' phone?

DAC is the same as every other Snapdragon 800/801.
I guess it's software related.

Duh, I forgot the DAC is built into the SoC. And I'm not getting any bugs so far after 4 days. I'm actusly quite impressed. Its more stable than any Samsung HTC crap android ive used.
I do hope this is remedied with the next software iteration.
Well, even the mighty Nexus5 had some issues with call volume, and speaker volume. this might get fixed with an update. And I hope very soon.
kudos

Audio After Nougat

Phone's audio seems wonderful after the update, or am I just imagining things. Really loved the output of the device. Also the 3.5mm jack output were excellent as once they were used to be. Late update but seems to have fixed many plaguing issues.
Yeah i also noticed the speaker audio output is increased and nice compared to MM.
Yes this is one of the main reasons, I am not switching to any custom ROMs. Bcoz no other ROMs can give better audio output than STOCK N.

Initially N-Custom ROMs had the MM quality. Now almost all roms have the N-audio quality.
Beanstalk, AOKP and Every N-ROM build in vache's site and shreps' site have the new audio quality.
Sadly my favorite ROM, Resurrection Remix, still has the MM audio quality. Even today's Lineage OS OMS build has MM audio Quality.
Back while I was using the soak test N, one day I noticed lint clogging the earphone jack, which was obstructing my headphones from being fully connected (I wasn't getting that satisfying snap you get when they're properly plugged in) and worse, this was causing the earphones to play audio in only one ear. After a great deal of trial and error, I found that with some struggling, I could plug them into a limbo state of sorts where the sound was somewhat weaker but at least let me listen through both ears. I cleaned the lint out with a safety pin, careful not to scrape too hard. But the problem persisted despite these efforts.
I eventually resigned myself to this state and eventually became used to listening at diminished volumes. (I will never let you go, Jack!) So imagine my surprise when, having installed the official N update, I discovered that the jack was working fine! Audio quality even improved over the previous software.
I'm wondering how a software upgrade solved a problem that seemed like a hardware failure though.

Yes. They all support VoLTE. Almost the same battery life with significant increase in performance.

Bluetooth audio quality

Anyone else experiencing pretty crappy audio quality when streaming music over Bluetooth?
Fully stock and had the phone for a week now.
Thanks!
Damn, no one else experiencing this?
Just got my phone today and set them up with my Sony headphones since I saw your post and they sound fine. Having said that I'm not an audio file so you might notice more than I. Tomorrow I will try them with my Beats and car but so far so good.
I wouldn't quite consider myself an audiophile either, however the tingy sound I was hearing in my car was becoming unbearable. I have been using an AUX cable while I continue researching the bluetooth settings of the phone. Hopefully your's sounds good in your car as well though and I have a hardware issue that I just need to get replaced.
good sound here, music or call on Kenwood head unit via Bluetooth is ok
Yeah, so I may just be sensitive to the quality. I just tested with some BT headphones I have, the audio is noticeably more clear when using the AUX cable rather than the BT connection. My most recent daily phone was the Nexus 6 which must have had a better BT radio (or codecs)
I came also from nexus 6 and there are no noticeable differences between the two.
I just received mine yesterday and from a couple hours of listening I would say the Bluetooth audio is decent. My problem with the Bluetooth is that it won't pair with my fitbit charge 2 so I'm thinking about returning it.
My FitBit Charge HR is syncing, albeit slow, but does still sync.
Yes, small tingly, static. Electronic artifacts in a song using Samsung level u pro. In the background. This dont occur in another Android phone
tested on a dell venue Tablet, Android. And the quality is dramatically better (no noticeable bitrate artifacts). You can test it with aretha franklin - lover come back to me, and hear the differences in the RIGHT channel
this is a bitrate problem i think. sounds like 64kbps

same problem here, tingy/electronic sound. test aretha franklin lover come back to me (stereo version) and hear the horrible artifacts in the right channel. I believe this is a bitrate/bitpool limitation.

Well I am glad I am not the only one. This does rule out me sending my phone back though. I wonder if they will load new codecs when the device receives EMUI 5.0 in March.

Well poo, I was really hoping it would help. Although I own a different variant. I have BLN-L24.
Side note, how did you get access to the beta?

Thanks for the link! Looks like they only have the original OS image for my model on there but that is fine.
I am hoping the same for the custom OS world. Doesn't seem like a lot of folks have started dev on this phone yet but they may be waiting for the new EMUI 5.0
Just a follow-up. Been using the new EMUI 5.0 for a few days now and no luck on Bluetooth quality increase.
The same here with my honor 6x BLN-L24. I have bitrate artifacts on treble. Always no fix ?
Having the exact same problem with my Honor 6X BLN-L21. Did somebody figure out a solution yet? Bluetooth is pretty much unlistenable like this.

So far I have just been living with a rooted phone and running Viper Audio. With the settings tuned right the quality sounds bearable but I am keeping fingers crossed a good solid ROM will come out that can fix this.

Nobody is actively porting audio mods anymore. Except for DTS I suppose.
For now the goto is to use Ainur Sauron or Narsil and/or any of Viper, JDSP, and DTS.
Obviously when it comes to audio mods, less is more though. Too much signal processing is detrimental to the audio quality and generally makes it sound worse. So I'd suggest only using one of the DSPs with one version of Ainur at most.
But in my experience the 3a(xl) doesn't really need any audiomods. The ****ty earbuds I got with mine along with decent quality audio files is more than enough clarity wise. I also got a new pair of true wireless earbuds (Liberty 2 Pros) and they sound phenomenal.

The Pixel 3a sounds very good. But with viper I can simulate a wider soundstage on my Bluetooth earbuds, and they sound way better than they deserve. I have a pair of soundcore liberty 2 that are bass heavy, even with the Anker app. They give you many presets, but not a custom one, go figure.
About Dolby Atmos, I realize that two apps could over process sound, but on my Galaxy S7, I had a pretty good balance. Plus I like to experiment a bit.
Thanks for the info btw
Not sure if I did something wrong but this obliterated my battery life. I went from 9-10 hrs screen time to 3 1/2.

No battery issues here.
In fact, the only problem I have is that sometimes viper stops working and I have to restart the phone.
I have no mods/modules installed other than viper4a.

Call quality issues with new Pixel 4a...is this a known issue?

I have a new Pixel 4a and when I am on a call, the people I'm talking to complain of a microphone vibration. It is worse the more loudly I speak. I traded it in today for another at Best Buy and the new one is better but has the same issue - is this a known issue with the 4a? Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot?

Nope; had mine since launch. Possibly a later batch issue.
Mine sounds great, except sometimes people can't hear me even if i call them back, i have to wait for them to call me back then they can hear me

Likely a carrier/provisioning problem vs device issue
We have a launch model, and one I just got a week or so ago after having to wait a few weeks for it to be restocked... No one has mentioned any audio issues on either device.
