Looking to "upgrade" - General Topics

I need suggestions to upgrade from my dinosaur to a mastodon.
First, don't judge me. I'm currently using an HTC One M9, rooted and running ViperOne (MM) Dark with all the trimmings. I've loved this device from day one and Venom ROMS made it so much better. I've hung onto it as long as possible but it's really starting to have issues undoubtedly due to it's outdated OS and hardware. Slow performance and GPS failures mainly.
The replacement doesn't have to be latest and greatest. A couple generations old is fine. I really only have three mandates. 1. Fully S-off rootable, 2. Full-time Dark theme and 3. A strong processor for multi-tasking. Color accent options and feature add-ons via ROM upgrades are on the short list.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. Thank you all.

Best android phone (or android "capable" phone)

I'm looking to make the switch from WM to Android, but am thoroughly confused when it comes to android phones already on the market PLUS phones for which there have been successful android ports.
Basically, I would like to know your thoughts on which GSM phone is the best when it comes to running android, in terms of hardware (camera, speed, screen , etc) and overall functionality. I can flash custom ROMS and such, no problem.
I'm also confused on the differences between Android 1.5, 1.6, and 2.0. I see new phones (such as the upcoming X10) will have v1.6, so it can't be all that outdated.
Anyway, I can probably research those differences when I have time. Mainly, I would like any opinions on the "best" overall android phone for the money. Again, it will be on a GSM network (AT&T). THANKS!
I fell in love with my Eris on the first day. It has the beautiful Sense UI, a 5mp camera, speaker phone, clear screen, easy navigation button layout, 3.5mm jack, Exchange support, outlook sync, and decent battery life (if you don't have wifi running all the time). As you can see in my signature I have owned a couple of Android phones but am not a total expert. It all depends on the features you need and/or want. Also there is no root for the Eris yet but we will be getting Android 2.x very soon and hopefully root. It sounds like Eris and Droid will get 2.x first at this point in time but things change quickly.

Thanks. I should also note that I must have a GSM phone, as I'm tied to AT&T in the states. But I guess the ERIS is just the CDMA version of the GSM Hero, right?? Thanks again for your thoughts. Keep 'em coming.

The Vogue... hands down.
In fact, they released a flashable version of Android (not just running from SD), but flashing it to NAND wiping the device and exorcising it from M$ WM...
The ports are nearly perfect as well. Fast and very smooth (and stable).
Then I would go for the Hero unless you do what was suggested above to your Vogue. Also the Hero is rooted and there is a sub-forum you can checkout for more info.

Thanks, but I forgot to mention it must be a GSM device (have now edited my first post). I think the HTC Elf has not seen as much success with an android port, unless I'm mistaken.

Why made you decide to mod your Desire S?

Having owned an original HTC Desire, there are huge advantages to rooting it etc. It's biggest fault was its poor internal memory storage therefore low disk space was always an issue when it came to installing apps as stock. Therefore rooting allows use of the EXT of the sd card thus increase memory available. In addition, the Desire was left behind restricted to Froyo with only a poor Gingerbread and lacking sense 3.0 update to be released by HTC.
But now after becoming the owner of a Desire S I am less inclined to mod it! These previous issues are gone, with 1GB of internal storage it is far more than sufficient. Gingerbread and Sense 3.0 is the shipped software, with lets be honest not a whole of difference in comparison to 3.5.
Overclocking is never something I have seen necessary, my Saga runs smooth and I don't experience any lag etc so this bonus with rooting I have no interest with.
Therefore I propose to you, why made you decide to root and flash custom roms on your Saga?
What benefits have they brought that you believe are essential? Or are you just a bit of a modding junkie
Thanks for taking your time to read my thread, I hope you guys can share with me some of your opinions and feedback received here can help less eager users like myself!
I just hated Sense...
+1. I bought the phone because it was cheaper than the equivalent phone from another company. Also the build quality was much better. Although I didn't mind sense I planned to switch to cyanogenmod as soon as it became available (thanks superkid )

Well, for me it was something completely opposite of you both, i wanted Sense 3 on my device with the awesome lockscreen and carousel-like home screen. I first saw that on my friend's DHD, who helped me A LOT in flashing my first ROM.
I too came from a Desire... And I too was impressed by the improvement the Desire S is compared to the Desire. It was very good just out of the box.
However, I missed the little tweaks I made using the miui rom. For some reason I felt the Miui rom to be more intuitive, more adaptable to my quircky needs... With the Miui rom I can just tweak the way it looks more precisely. I want another lock screen, fine, just change the lock screen. Another launcher, another font, another .... you get the drift.
I was a great fan of Sense. Tried several CM and non-sense roms, but I just ended up missing Sense. The non-sense were lightning fast, but still missed the good feel of sense. Then I tried Miui and now I wonder where the rom was all that time...
That's why I Rom my DesireS...
Grtz,
J.
I love build quality of HTC phones and extremely hate anything that is overbloated. Sense is a queen of bloatware. It was nice to have it on HTC Hero (v1,6) UNTIL i've found CyanogenMod. Since than all my phones (Hero, Legend, G2, *Failation*, DS) were powered by CM. Fast, functional and simple. This what Android is meant to be.

I started because I knew virgin would take forever to release sense 3.0 update
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App
Many reasons:
Get rid of operator software
Get rid of HTC Sense
Overclocking
Upgrade to the newest Android Version
Other minor reasons: remote control, screen captures...
First of all: Titanium backup (which requires root).
The phone before my Desire S was also running android, so I wanted to restore my apps.
Reason 2: Custom roms + custom recovery.
I wanted to try out sense 3.0 (The official update was way later than a fully working custom ROM) and custom ROM's tend to have better performance and more fixes compared to official releases due to custom kernels etc.
Reason 3: Remove bloatware
Reason 4: Make all apps work, even those that require root.

With Desire S stock - 100% satisfied
Modded Desire S - 200% satisfied.
Also I recommend sense 3.5, much much better than 3.0. It adds more functionality
It's been tweaked a hell lot better and about 50% faster than 3.0. Trust me. You will feel the difference.
Trust me, I was like you when I first got my desire S.
It did all I wanted. What more could I want?
Then I decided to just try rooting and see what it was like.
Then after rooting, with ROMs etc, it made the phone much much better.

1. i'm new to rooting/flashing android phones. my phone prior to the DS was the Wildfire. I had it for a little over a year and it remains 100% stock to this day so i wanted to experiment on the DS. I was originally gonna go for the Sensation XE was since I'm new to rooting, It'd hurt less if i bricked the DS compared to the Sensation XE
2. to get rid of the extra stuff like plurk, twitter etc that i don't even use.
3. it's FUN!
Because once you started s-offing and rooting and changing roms, you wont be able to stop. Because there are some feelings that came with it. Escpecially overclocking thing.

i haven't tried overclocking my DS just yet. I dunno, maybe it's just not my thing but to each his own i'm sure i'll give it a whirl just to test it. but gotta read up on it a lot first before i actually try it. ROM wise, i'm currently using Endymion 3.1 and it's VERY nice indeed happy new year in advance to everyone
theres nothing to worry if you overclock your ds. i tried to overclocked my phone up to 1.6ghz and battery temp is still at 34. Im currently on MikRunny Rom

Do it
you won't regret it
or just use 3.0 for a while longer and see where you would like improvements, then when you get bored use 3.5
I rooted because T-mobile took ages to update to Sense 3, and I new ICS was coming and I would want to switch to CM9 asap. Now running Superkid/MDJ's ROM, despite a few bugs very usable, no going back for me, only forward to a (once again) fully working ROM. Also, I thought Sense 2.5 was quite fluent, appreciated the more fluent sense 3.0, but it lags like hell compared to AOSP ICS
1. Apps, that needs ROOT.
2. Other ROMS, i always was interested in MIUI ROM.
3. Now ICS, I probably won't come back to Sense (maybe to 4.0)
One of the main reasons why i got into the unlocking and rooting business is because i hate being told what i cannot do with my own stuff. Kinda stinks "Apple" all over, and i hate that kind of cheap marketing. i bought a device with an open-source operating system for what? To be told that since my device has a non-open-source custom UI, i can't experiment with it (despite buying it out to the last penny)?
Screw that. I just wanted to S-Off and root for the heck of it. Hell, when i did that, there weren't even any good ROMs available for the DS, except a couple that i never liked much anyway. My reasons for S-off and rooting today have matured and changed from those days...but i still remember the anger i felt when i had found about s-on after purchasing my phone... (this was my first android, and i didn't know ANYTHING!!). But look at where we've come today...we have one of the the best performing beta ICS on any device, and if it were not for the camera, it would be good enough to be released as stable!
Would we have gotten this far with a locked bootloader?
So why did i root? Because HTC said i couldn't.
Because of apps which need root, because to get rid of bloatware which comes with Sense, because I simply wanted to do it.
I've started with CM, but I couldn't fix the GPS issue so I switched to some Runny ROMS. Now I'm a happy user of MIUI, which is for me the best mobile experience in my life

[Q] Questions about Sense and Android 4.0

Hello guys,
I've just recently got the One S on contract from Netcom and coming from a Samsung phone this really has been a new experience for me all together. But I have a problem. The phone itself works flawlessly and lags nothing compared to the HTC One X - but I really, really, really HATE SENSE.
I just can't seem to get used to it and since I've pretty much done custom flashing on my old Galaxy S since the very start, I just can't wait to replace SENSE as soon as possible - in the mean time, would it be possible to just unlock the device and put a STOCK version of ICS on it? Like one for the One S so that I get to keep stuff such as the HTC browser and maybe the custom Alt+Tab kind of thingy they put on?
Personally would like to build my own custom ROM with some mixed ingredienses but I wouldn't know where to start.
Any ideas? Or do I just have to wait and stick to this in the mean time?
As a stop-gap measure, you could install another launcher. I did this on the HTC Sensation for awhile before we started having either the non-sense options or true AOSP builds like we have now. From my limited experience, this is a flagship device and developers and users and documentarians will show up. The Sensation has a pretty rich community of both sense and AOSP builds now. One cautionary note though. On my Sensation running a modified version of CM9 there are things still being fixed. You may find early versions of ICS will have a variety of issues as developers get things solved. Its particularly hard before source gets released though. Its like peddling a bicycle backwards in a dark tunnel when its raining.
As mentioned above, install Nova launcher for now.

Au Contraire!
I am going with the One S because it runs Sense 4 ( best android overlay)
I was going to go with Samsung Galaxy S2 but my friend showed me his, everything about TouchWiz was unappealing from the large text the stale interface.

I guess each one has it's own taste
My gripe with sense is just what you describe as appealing.. the small black text on white background in most of the interface is killing my eye-sight at night. Guess I have been used to the Android 2.3 experience for too long and as much as Sense 4 works wonders - it just not my cup of tea. This could of course be fixed if there was a "black" skin that could be applied. Preferably with as little bright colors as possible (I know, may sound boring but will eventually save a few hours of battery in the long run due to the AMOLED display running "less hot" )
I'm in the same situation as the OP, really enjoyed ICS on my Desire until the display broke (got slammed display first into table... IKEA > HTC)
Anyways here's hoping that I understand these nuggets correctly: "MoDaCo Custom ROMs are based on official ROMs - either shipping or leaked."
"Stock style and Vanilla (ICS) style prebakes will be available as the ROM takes shape."
Source: first post in [ROM] 11 Apr - MoDaCo Custom ROM for the HTC One S - Sense and Vanilla styles in the One S Development forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592126
So hopefully Paulobrien just removes Sense etc from an official ROM. Not sure whats up with the cooking lingo though, maybe there is a dev-chef-lingo dictionary somewhere on XDA!
Also I second your request for where to start learning to build your own ROM! Should post a Q in the noob-friendly thread here.

Perhaps you are right
Looking at sense 3.0 interface , the black blackground is weird, sense 4 with white background for settings seems much more natural. I have spent quite some time around my friends who have EVO 3D and Sensation, and I have to admit I will miss the eye catching animations and the easy access carousel function. Of course this is will be my first HTC phone so I can see how people hate the white look of settings. Coming from an iPhone with white settings too, it will be a similar transition for me. Sense just seems to have so much depth and much to explore compared to other Android Overlays. Having ICS along with it just makes the experience much smoother and sweeter.(Pun partially intended )
So... can anybody tell me if the Stock ROMs that have been cooked for the One S recently work good enough to run for production (i.e. HTC camera, launcher, weather widget)
I really would like to feel that AOSP experience again just like on my old Galaxy S. But I don't want to loose any functionality

[Q] Screen appearance after update

Hello everybody,
Yestarday I received a highlight (message) on my One X saying that a software update was available.
Since the last software update passed more than 6 months than I choosed to do the update.
Everything is running well but I didn´t like the style of the icons (for example, the Timing Schedule icon was the 15 number on it and now is a timing schedule page), there was some app that were removed, the ring to slide and unlock the screen is not here anymore, etc.
My first question is:
Who is the responsible for that: Android or HTC Sense update ? I don´t know which was updated.
My current situation is:
Android version = 4.2.2
HTC Sense version = 5.0
The second question: Is there any way to move back to the old situation ?
Of course I would like to have everithing up to date in terms of apps, etc., but I would like to choose the "style" if possible.
On my previous HTC (Wizard), I made ROM update several times, but on current One X none.
Is it necessary to have a diferente icon style and up to date apps? As far as I remember, the ROM is cooked with a specific content.
Is it still true even for One X ?
Thanks in advance !
Regards,
Cássio
First things first, do you have the One X (quad core Tegra3 CPU) or the One XL (dual core snapdragon CPU)?
HTC are responsible for the way HTC Sense appears. The new styling (Lockscreen, icons, widgets, Blinkfeed etc) are all part of that.
If your phone is completely stock (which I'm guessing it is) there's no way to reverse the update. If you go through all the trouble of unlocking your bootloader, installing a custom recovery, installing root access, gaining SuperCID, and gaining s-off, then you can use an RUU to install the previous version. But, if you do all this you will no longer be on Android 4.2.2 Jellybean, you'll go back to Android 4.1 Jellybean. This will mean you no longer have any of the optimizations that come with the update.
All of those steps I mentioned above require a certain level of knowledge to undertake so you'd need to do quite a lot of research. To be honest, it's a lot of work just to go backwards, pretty much everyone who does it does it to move forwards and install custom software.
My honest advice to you is to get used to the new software, unless you're heavily interested in modding your device this really isn't the right route for you.

Update
Thanks Timmaaa !
My One X is for European market which means quad core Tegra3 CPU I believe.
I don't know what you mean with "stock" but I guess this is the case.
I was studing the new Sense and realize that there are some features that can be customized which helps a lot.
I agree that the way to "reverse" is complex and demands a lot of knoleadge. I remember a had to study a lot to replace ROMs on my Wizard years ago.
I decided to keep the current situation and become familiar with new features and designs due to complexity, have the old Android version and loose future updates.
Once again, tks for your help and advice !
Regards,
Cássio
Ok cool, no problems. If you need help with your phone in the future just make sure you ask in the HTC One X forum, this is actually the One XL forum.

[Q] ROM Recs to suit specific need?

Good morning! Very excited to be joining the M8 community.
Had been using a OnePlus One last, but needed to switch to Big Red, so I picked up an M8. Great to see all the work underway.
I've been reading for the last few days, but I needed to ask a few questions that were best answered by the experience of the community than deciphering from serial histories in posts.
I need your quick help, if you could -- I'm hoping my karma from my OnePlus days transfers to the M8 community
1) I need the formula for rock solid stability on lollipop with the M8. Specifically, this means debloated, no FCs & the like, killer battery life -- and additional features are a bonus. The formula includes:
(a) ROM & release date (ie, some 5.1s are probably not as stable as their 5.0.x)
(b) matching Firmware version & VZW radio version
At this point, I'm biased slightly towards GPe/AOSP -- but happy to take a Sense 6/7 if that's the way to get stability.
For anyone with a OnePlus who happens to be reading, I found that SlimLP (Slim Roms) built by FusionJack (SlimSaber) version 5.0.2 was the right combo.
2) MultiRom -- used it and loved it on my OnePlus. I see that its available on the M8, but the thread suggests its got all sorts of problems. Anyone here using it successfully with this GPe ROM? Any tips to save me some pain? Or should I avoid it?
Thanks all!
