feed for launchers other than Google's news feed - General Questions and Answers

so yeah everyone who doesn't have a news feed generally goes for a launcher which has one.. as a samsung user, I did the same and went for ruthless launcher and got the Google feed but recently I got bored of Google feed so o searched heaven and earth and found that microsoft launcher has something similar but actually better than Google feed . when I used Microsoft's feed it felt amazing.. it was superbly customisable but after using Microsoft launcher for a few days, I felt dissatisfied with it.. it didn't had any bad feature or a feature that was missing but it never felt like ruthless launcher. so I switched back to ruthless launcher but again stuck to same old Google feed..
so does anyone knows any other feed or a way that I can integrate microsoft feed in ruthless launcher??
by the way the app's description in playstore says that it supports different feeds but I just don't know how to use another..

Must-Have Widgets for Helix Launcher

Hi!
Hopefully I haven't missed a thread somewhere here that has already addressed this, but I wanted to make a central thread for non-Sense users.
I love Helix, but I miss certain Sense widgets like Messaging, Mail, Music, and Friendstream. I've noticed a lot of people swear by Helix, so I'd love to know what kind of little gems Helix users have found to make it even more functional than Sense.
If anyone would like to post links or upload some apks and better yet, post some screenshots, that would be so awesome. I'm getting tired of switching back and forth between launchers because one has something the other doesn't.
If we all share what we use and what we know, maybe we can put together an update.zip with widget apks for use with Helix that rivals the Sense package.
I would like to know this too. I would love to have my clock widgets...
Here is what I use:
1. Beautiful Widgets -> Not free
2. Smooth Calendars -> Free
http://androidsocialmedia.com/general/my-favorite-free-android-widgets
I found this when I googled android widgets, thought it might be useful.
A big thing that hit me here is that finding these kinds of articles and screenshots can give me some great ideas on how to set up my home pages.
Exciting stuff!

Chameleon Launcher

Anyone using chameleon launcher on their infinity?
Looks like another great launcher for tablets...
http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/18/chameleon-launcher-1.0-google-play/
whats so great about it?
Tried it.
Uninstalled it.
I prefer Apex launcher. Chameleon has some nice ideas but it's still buggy and not ready for release imo. It costs $10 too which is a mistake.
Basically, the main feature is that you can set it up so that your default "home" screen automatically changes depending on where you are, what time it is, etc... But really, other than that, I'm not so sure what people (including myself - I'm a "backer") were so excited about. Besides being able to set your default home screen depending on certain conditions, it really doesn't add much to the launcher experience...
I personally can't remember why it was supposed to be so great!
I un-installed it as well, mainly because you can only use widgets provided by the app - you lose access to all standard Android widgets, which makes it unusable in my opinion.
That being said, it would be nice if Nova, Apex, etc added the ability to automatically change your home screen depending on certain conditions - I think that is a cool feature...

I am a backer, too. I am disappointed, too.
Switching things like chameleon does is really nothing special. It is still just one screen. So, i can set my apex launcher screens to reflect what chameleon tries to do very easily. The only thing is that i have to swipe. To be honest, this is not exactly true either, cause almost everything can be done with Tasker.
So yeah. I still hope chameleon starts getting better, but it has to be real quick or all the interest is going to float away and another app will go down the drain like many others.
I backed it too... it costed 10$ . But after few days i uninstalled it. Lack of Widgets , very Slow , lack of user defined wallpapers etc .
They are still in Beta i guss and they are updating the app almost everyday . Hope they come up with more nich Widgets etc soon.
thanks all for the replies!!! was trying to see if it warranted the ten dollar price
like i use a different homescreen when im in my vehicle (media oriented),but right now i just swipe right to get to it
swipe left to go back to my regular homescreen
chameleon key feature is simply to "auto-swipe" ?
At first I was disappointed, 1.0 has changed my opinion its stable and looks amazing. I was the first to complain with the beta releases now with the widget api released things good get interesting. @Apex launcher pro on my tf700t.....too buggy

Kickstarter backer here and I'm a little disappointed now that they have issued Ver. 1.0. There's no calendar widget, you can only place so many apps in the dock, the dock is huge and not adjustable, no pre-built Android widgets so any thing you've already paid for is wasted, and it doesn't do news feed images very well.
But the biggest disapointment is the lack of a calendar widget! That should have been a fundamental basic widget from the start. It's not so it won't be my launcher of choice untill that get's fixed.

That's one key feature, but I would say the bigger draw is the aesthetic polish it brings. That's one of the reasons they won't let normal android widgets be used, as it clashes with the look of Chameleon. Give it time for more widgets to get made (especially with the API now available to developers) before deciding if it's a success or failure. IMO with 3 or 4 more of the widgets I need, I would easily use it as my day to day launcher.
whoah....cant use regular widgets? only widgets you can use are chameleon widgets?

Correct. If you care to learn html5 you can make your own Chameleon widgets, and in the future they will add the ability to use widgets other users create. Until then, you only have the official chameleon ones to choose from. No standard Android widgets are usable in Chameleon though.
I was super hyped about it so I backed it on KS. Then I tried it and uninstalled it... nuff said...

Chameleon will definitely get better with further releases and more widgets added.
Like someone before me said, for me too, the polished and beautiful design is an added value of this launcher, nothing else (at least currently).
Calendar, Google+ and Music widgets are coming in near future. Custom widgets from users are coming, too, eventually. (i am hoping for beter gmail, email widgets etc...which can easily be done by others, not necessarily by teknision).
But, as i said before, they will have to act quickly - hype is on, but as with anything else it can get cold very quickly, too.

Just found this I like the look of it but does it have bookmark and email widgets?
Another kickstarter backer here. I also uninstalled it. It supports my gmail and news. I don't use Twitter or Facebook so it's fairly useless to me. Maybe widgets that appeal more to me are yet to come but not using it now.

Comparison of Android Launchers

Myself and a lot of other Android enthusiasts have been writing a pro/con comparison of the most popular and useful Android Launchers available. It is coming together nicely but there is always room for improvement. The whole site is much like a wiki where in everything compiled is community created and to be used as a source of information, of course the site is advertisement free as well.
Being that this was created by an Android community I figured it only fair to share it with other Android communities.
Each launcher is broken down by pros and cons of it’s features and problems, making for an easy way to see where they excel and fail as well as an easy way to compare to one another.
You can see the summary view of all the launchers here.
You can also click on each one to read all pros/cons not just the ones in the summary page.
The launchers so far included are:
Nova Launcher Prime
Google Now Launcher
Yahoo Aviate Launcher
Smart Launcher Pro 3
Buzz Launcher-Smart&Free Theme
Action Launcher 3
Apex Launcher
Go Launcher EX
Z Launcher Beta
Yandex.Shell
Launcher 8
ADW.Launcher
APUS Launcher
Lightning Launcher eXtreme
SF Launcher
Themer: Launcher, HD Wallpaper
Next Launcher 3D Shell
Mi Launcher (MIUI)
CM Launcher
SF Launcher 2
Hola Launcher
Zeam Launcher
EverythingMe Launcher
Zero Launcher
Hope you guys like it and feel free to add to it to make it even better and more useful.
As expected, nothing much can really beat Nova. Expected Apex to be higher though.

Eh, there's something to be said about stock experience, but, seriously, some of the things Google locks down or forces are odd.
I always find reviews that start with 'one of the cons is that the many options for customisation can be a bit daunting' (or the equivalebt thereof) to be utterly useless; particularly when the core feature of the very app is the massive amount of customisation. The many options are the reason people use launchers. How is that a negative?
Why on earth would someone who doesn't want all those options even consider using the app?
It's like saying one of the cons of android is all the different settings and options. That's not a negative, it's the main reason we bought the bloody thing in the first place!

Not always. There are different reasons for why people use launchers (or OSs).

"Android TV" Experience - What's missing?

hey all
So I recently got myself a Nexbox A95x to play with, hardware is really nice, looks sleek, then I turned it on.. The first thing that hit me is the launcher UI is horrible.
To cut a long story short, I've looked on the Play Store and I can't seem to see any launchers that look anything close to the UI experience of Google's Leanback launcher so I'm wondering what you guys recommend as the launcher for one of these types of boxes?
Also, is there any apps you use to be notified on your TV when you get an sms or whatsapp etc?
I should also note I'm a dev, and I'm seriously considering building something better than what I've currently found out there so far so I'm interested to know if I've missed something or if the state of TV ui apps atm really is lacking..
You could try https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.awe.dev.pro.tv
Once it been set-up, it's very good. You can change artwork of apps and rearrange with ease.
Does this replace original launcher? Or does it act app like? Does it start itself when booting android TV?
I know this thread is old but I recently purchased the A95X and wanted to share my thoughts for anyone who may find this in the near future.
The A95X isn't the greatest box by any stretch but the TV Launcher linked here has made this box worth using. I've been looking for a way to sideload the Google Android TV Launcher but this device is not listed as compatible with the play store listing. Still searching for that but in the mean time, TV Launcher is a quality app that does run app like but you just set it as the default launcher and it starts when you boot the box. I recommend it.

TSF Launcher gone, now £1.49

EDIT AGAIN
"Notice: Please kindly be noted that the development of TSF Launcher 3D Shell has been suspended. Users who have been using the app will be directed to the page of the updated version of CM Launcher theme after upgrading the app. Please install the upgraded version of CM Launcher to continue enjoying the desktop launcher feature. Huge amount of pretty themes are readily available. Fetch them and download for FREE!"
How on earth did they uninstall it ?
**EDIT** - Not sure the launcher can be bought now.
Not sure I have missed something here but all on it's own, TSF Launcher has been uninstalled and a search on playstore now shows a paid version.
So I googled TSF Launcher and found the original playstore link
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tsf.shell&hl=en_GB
So sent it to myself on my phone and installed it. Ran it and now instead of it normally starting up, I get a carbon black theme installer.
Don't know what's going on but tsf launcher was the best for me.
Are they allowed to remotely uninstall ?
#2 so I followed the link to install the carbon black theme and low and behold that requires a different launcher. There is a review on the launcher mentioning TSF Launcher and not in a good way.
Same thing happened to me, it was my favorite launcher and now it's gone, wtf, why would they do that? I wantit back
Same thing just happened to me.... how the **** can they uninstall an app from my phone?! I think i paid something stupid like £15 for it when it was first released.
This is not on at all.
---------- Post added at 12:44 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:17 AM ----------
Please report both this theme that TSF SHELL has become and CM LAUNCHER to Google....this cannot be within their rules.
This is beyond upsetting. Where can we report this? Did someone back up the apk before ****tah mobile took over?
Report in play store...scroll down to bottom on app page, flag as inappropriate, select reason as other and write what has happened.

Done.

Here's where you can download the app before Cheetah Mobile took over.
I used the note widget for loads of important info, all bloody lost because if this, work passwords, safety critical stuff for my job that I don't use very often but need in event if emergency etc....I am so pissed right now!
Edit: looks like they have put it back on the playstore!
Did they really think they would get away with such an underhand move?!

That was a shocking thing to happen. I haven't tested the download/install now that it's back but I am fully pissed off that an app can be abused like that. I read about one guy using an app to store info that comes with it, all the info he had in there, gone. He isn't happy at all.
What a load of crap... Ya, I really enjoyed TSF Launcher and it seemed to be great ideas and technology.. Then they disappear.
The widgets wern't carried over to use in CM launcher.
CM Launcher , I can't get it to work in landscape mode. Seriously? That's a no-go. Maybe im missing something..
Next Launcher was my choice of launcher, but that to seemed to have been bought out by Go Launcher.. They are greedy money hongers.. I paid for Go Launcher also and many complaints from everyone about the bloat ware and Malware they push with their products. NOW they are asking for a 10/month subscription fee/// Don't know what stuff they been smoking.
So still trying to find a good visual Launcher replacement that is updated/supported.

TSF Launcher is back on the Play Store...
I've used the Next Launcher 3D Shell (Paid) for quite a long time (must have been a few years +/-) and I've noticed that it was Pulled from the Play Store at some point in time.
I do hope that it's temporary and it might be but, the developer is the same as the (HORRIBLE) GO Launcher and I'm praying that this wasn't meant in an attempt to try and shove the Next Launcher users to go with the GO Launcher. This wouldn't work for me since the GO Launcher is horrible in comparison. I'll give it some time before considering any alternatives.
In my opinion, the next best thing to the Next Launcher is actually the TSF Launcher. I've tried it out on one of my other devices and it's actually pretty comparable to the Next Launcher.
Only time will tell... I already posted a message to the Next Launcher folks in their Google Plus and their Facebook pages. Who knows.

Agree, TFS launcher was amazing development. But seems there has been some type of launcher war / monopoly going on.. Buy outs and turning them to "bloat ware /malware and push crap down your thought" like Go launcher.. Been using Next launcher for years because unfortunately TSF, stopped development. Noe Next Launcher is outdated.

I definitely understand you...
The TSF Launcher was put back in the Play Store and was just updated around 6 +/- months ago
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tsf.shell
The Next Launcher was actually updated appropriately the same time the TSF Launcher was...
I'm still using the Next Launcher 3D and, i still plan on using it unless/until there are/is some type of issue that begins to surface with it that forces me to think about changing Launchers.
