Google Search Notifications - General Questions and Answers

I've got a weird issue that has sprung up in maybe the last month or so. I use the Google feed
(whatever the thing is called when you swipe right on the home screen) fairly often. It's a good place to get a daily dose of things that I'm interested, world news, and local news. For over a year, I used to get notifications throughout the day of articles that I may be interested in. This was a nifty feature as it would do a good job of showing me articles I may have not seen otherwise.
Then...SOMETHING....happened. It stopped doing that.
Now I just get notifications of a single topic. One specific topic. (Final Fantasy XIV for the curious)
The notifications will be the title of an article, for instance, "Final Fantasy XIV teleport prices to change" or anything like that. But if that weren't enough I'm only being sent one single subject, when you click on the notification it just takes me to a Google search of the topic, that then lists several articles about the topic.
Is this a new feature or did I bork something somewhere? I read to turn off notifications for topics, and I did. But daily I still receive notifications where Google gives me the finger and instead of linking the article just googles the subject and tells me to go find it myself.
Yes, sure, I love FFXIV, but I want more than just that and Google searches. Is this how these notifications now work, or did I click on something stupid to mess it all up?
Thanks for any help!

weird text message. helppp

i just bought my tilt, just flashed to dutty v3 room and now i get a weird text every 4 mins. the number is 111145643 and it says wvi1 1.1 1111. is there anyway i can stop that text?
thanks!
Hmm I think you should call your carrier. Unless your phone is somehow sending itself a message, the kaiser probably isn't the culprit.
did you have express mail setup? if so you have to reinstall it on the phone then log onto the express mail server and delete the connection that you made for push e-mail or turn off push, then uninstall express mail on the phone and reset. you should be OK
^^I stand corrected!
I think that is for the IM+ program that ATT provides on their roms for im. The company is called wireless village i believe. I was bugged by it for a while, well the full hour I had my device before I flashed schaps!
I use Palringo until trillian gets a clue about wireless devices. It can sync with AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Gtalk, and others.
BTW, It uses data instead of sms to send messages like the IM+ does.
i had the same question but alltheway awnsered it for me already... its kind of a side effect of flashing sometimes. it will go away on its own. i think i got it like 8 times and havent had it since.

its not necessarily a side affect of flashing, it can go away if you reinstall the app that was on the old rom that is causing it... its something that was installed on your previous rom that used silent sms to alert the program to perform a specific function. LIke PTT, expressmail, or the cing/att IM client (to tired to remember the name)... When these programs are running your phone will recieve a ghost message that is only read by the app to wake it up. Alot of these problems were seen in the hermes thread and PTT.
Nope....That is what you get when someone tries to PTT you. Without PTT you get an SMS message. The way PTT works is basically Voice MMS messaging with a trigger to open & close the voice connection (PTT Button) Those digits you see are altered SMS addresses, they are altered so that PTT can recognize them & shift it from SMS to PTT.
Agin, whenever you kill PTT, you lose the ability to decipher the modified address & hence, it's received as a MMS instead. The reason you keep getting it is because the request that was sent retries a certain number of times before failing.
why dont you ask that question in the correct thread....the one that deals with your rom??

Well, that would make Dutty's never ending post even longer. We should save that post for other problems directly regarding the rom, and comments on new updates.
Beside, I believe the problem has nothing to do with Dutty's V3, it work flawlessly for me.
I am just so tired of more or less stupid questions that constantly are repeated because newies does not take their time and READ before starting threads and asking questions. This has to stay in the DUTTY thread - my opinion.
We shouldnt end up in a new HERMES forum with all the noise and bad mouth it had last year
I do not have anything against stupid questions in general - just do some searching and reading first..
So welcome all - lets use SEARCH some more..

Wow man take a breath! Your gonna get an ulcer.
to his defense i havn't seen this question in dutty's thread at all. and i've only seen it once but not onthe kairser forums. so cut him a lil slack. plus we all learn something from it...ptt or express mail can cause this. thats sure something i didnt know. hope all is well now...enjoy your device sir.
This question was answered on the hermes forum. That is how I solved my issue. I still believe it deals with the IM app from att that uses wireless village. Ill try to find some links to help get it solved.
I couldnt find the thread in the hermes section that described the issue. It might be from OZ messanger and not IM+. It is the version that comes preinstalled from the ATT rom. It is designed to use sms to im therefore making ATT more money.
I had the same text messages when I first got the Kaiser and ran the im software. I believe my test message had a different set of numbers at the end.
Here is a link to Wireless Village. They are a group that is promoting interoperability between handsets for a variety of functions (IM included).
http://www.openmobilealliance.org/tech/affiliates/wv/wvindex.html
EDIT:
I found this article from the cingular...er...ATT forums. This is the issue I originally had and the same text from the same number. The issue below is because OZ messenger was closed and not properly exited.
http://forums.cingular.com/cng/board/message?board.id=samsung&message.id=16362
I spent all day yesterday figuring this out. I downloaded and install the .cab file to my storage card and then logged into the IM program (OZ). After signing out, it kept me logged into all 3 services (Yahoo, AIM, and MSN) and then I proceeded to receive 40+ text (SMS) messages b/c it was trying to "reach me". After sitting on the phone for about an hour and half with a great Data Service Tech Rep, we figured it out and now the IM program works just fine.

I'm getting the message from 1111470400 and all it says is WVCI 1.1 333.

You know - Generally I don't get into these types of little spit / spat arguments - but today you have caught me at the perfect time.
Martinhdk - you are the type of person that makes dealing with the public so hard. You complain about things that aren't even worth complaining about. Sure - it was Dutty's ROM, but in essence had absolutely nothing to do with the ROM, it's probably the push to talk causing the issue. (Because I have the same issue) You had to try and prove yourself by spouting off and telling someone how to run things, when really, you were in the wrong.
Sometimes people get anxious and maybe don't do as much searching as they possibly should. Big DEAL - you are in a forum and since forums began it has been a problem. Does this require that you lay into the guy and tell him how stupid his question is? NO, it doesn't. You must be one very unhappy individual who probably lives a very lonely life - do us all a favor, in the future; keep your comments to yourself and let the moderators do their job.
I apologize to XDA - I know this thread / forum is not used for this. I just feel that sometimes these guys who insult someone younger / or maybe just not as experienced have a tendency to scare these guys away and I don't feel that is right.
i had the same exprience , its not the problem with your carrier , its the ATT IM+ app , if you exit the app w/o logging out of messenger app you keep getting this wierd msg , i tried unintsallng the app but no luck , finally i relashed a new rom and the error went away.
SOLUTION
What you do is you sign in to AIM at a desktop computer, the screenname you signed in on your phone. than a message will pop up saying you are signed in at two places and if you reply to that window with "1" it will sign you out at the other location, your phone. that should stop the messages.
the AIM service on your phone used txt msgs and when you close the program without first signing out. it usually causes that problem.
Stealth message?
I've heard of this so called "stealth" text message used by the carriers to send commands to the phone. My next question is - is it possible to send one of these so called "Stealth" messages from a phone to anther phone - with the proper instructions encoded in the text msg to automatically appear either on the users screen or in their inbox? I have heard this is possible but am very interested if someone could provide me a little more insight on it....
It's possible, it's been done. Would you like to know how? How do you want to send the malicious code? BT? WIFI? MMS? Maybe I can get you my bank account number & ssn while I'm at it?
There are other forums for that type of stuff, some proggies to do this are actually security auditing tools. Most all means though require the user to acknowledge receipt of whatever you send & then require them to execute it. However, I sincerely doubt that anyone here is going to give you any means to do something that may harm someone's device. Sure, you just want to play a prank, but how about the guy you then teach it to?

Custom Auto Corrections... star report?

I created a feature request for Google for a custom auto correction feature, which I think will go a long way in improving upon the stock Gingerbread keyboard.
Please visit the link and star it if you'd like to see this feature added in a future update. http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=14420
Thanks.
I think the keyboard will only get better with future releases. Google recently brought a company called blindtype, so hopefully they will implement it in their keyboard soon.
Anyway, I stared it stock keyboard is kinda bad!!
Ummm ... Doesn't Gingerbread have custom auto-completion? If I type a new word, then click on it, it says to click on it again to add it, then when I type that word, it comes up in the list of auto-completes. Or did I misunderstand what you are trying to achieve?

I starred it, but as soon as my email box starts flooding with all the idiotic "yeah, you google jerks fix this or I'll return my phone" comments that these starred reports tend to attract, I'll be un-starring it.
PLEASE people, only comment on starred reports, be they bug or enhancement requests if your comment actually adds value to the concept or bug report, such as additional steps to reproduce a problem on a bug, or an idea of how to improve the enhancement request. All the other stuff just spams people's mailbox and ticks them off.

I believe he's trying to achieve a way for us to EDIT or IMPORT the autocorrection list. With a feature like that, we could move our autocorrects from phone to phone, or better yet, they could be synced to the Google cloud with all the rest of our personalizations. As it stands now, wipe/reset your phone, and your keyboard has to re-learn all your habits/words.
BTW - I've found that whenever people start their post with "ummm..." it's taking as some kind of snarky put down of the person they're responding to. I've had perfectly innocent posts replied to with name-calling and insults over that.

Thanks for the tip/warning. I usually mean ummm to mean, "I'm confused by what you say" and not a snarky put down of the person. I think I understand what he's trying to achieve now and it makes sense to be able to transfer the custom list. Under Language in settings, you can view your list and add or delete words, but that's it. I don't think it would be too hard to add and Import and Export button to it at the very least.
Cheers.

I hear you on the "ummm", it's what I mean too, but it seems to upset people.
Now that's a good tip about going to language settings...I did not know that, but I don't really use stock keyboard, I use SwiftKey almost exclusively, and I believe it puts your auto-correct stuff on the sdcard, so they stick between roms/resets, and you could even move to a new phone.
edit: actually, looking at that Settings user dictionary, is that just user defined words, or actual autocorrects, or does the system use some kind of algorithm to compare what you're typing against those words?
It would be tedious if you have a lot of words, but you could always copy/paste your custom word list into that feature with a pre-saved text file listing them.
Thanks for starring, folks. I agree, I hope people don't get carried away by responding with their every two cents, which ends up just spamming mailboxes.
As for what I mean by custom auto corrections, if anyone is using or have used Smart Keyboard Pro, they'll know what I mean. Basically, you get to edit and choose what specific words you want to be auto corrected to what. For example, if you're prone to typing "km" instead of "I'm" you can create a custom auto correction to make km=I'm. That way, anytime you type "km" by accident, it'll automatically switch it to "I'm."
Another example, "tmr=tomorrow" or "idk=I don't know." You can do this on Smart Keyboard Pro and it's one of the best features in making the typing experience easier.
Bump. This got moved from General to Q&A and got lost in the shuffle. Please visit the link and star the request if you wish to see Custom Auto Corrections implemented by Google. I think it'll enhance greatly the typing experience.
Thanks.

I ended up just blocking the address they send notifications with. All I do is star genuine bugs. It's not like anything helpful ever goes up for those anyway; when it's fixed, it's fixed, and if someone really cares, they'll know it.

Occupy Wall Street needs you help developing an app

Developers at XDA.
I’m sure many of you have heard of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Over the past week I’ve become involved and have determined that there is a need that could most efficiently be met through technology and since I know little of developing I’m looking for some assistance.
Here is the problem:
Protesters are not allowed to communicate with a PA system. This means that when we try to organize we need to scream everything out to each other and pass the message along. As you can image, in the game of telephone things get distorted and misunderstood. We need some way to relay messages to anyone who needs it quickly.
Solution:
I believe that an app would be the best way to facilitate this. While there could be updates online, that’s slow and requires people who want to post something online to go to the blog. It also means that we would have to constantly check. It also means that someone would have to type long messages in through a touch screen. Not efficient.
My Idea is for the app comes from seeing the app Coco voice for the iphone. It’s a service where you can speak into your phone and like a text message it sends that vocal message to said recipient. Now if you took that same kind of recording idea, and instead of sending it directly to a phone number, uploaded it to a main server and people subscribed to that specific “group” (or what have you) would receive a push notification about a new message. Then everyone would be able to get important information about what’s happening, what we’re doing. And especially where to avoid clashes with police. A text element for quick messages would also be great.
What’s in it for you:
1) You’d be helping a movement that hopefully you believe in.
2) The use of this application could go far beyond just this movement. It’s sort of vocal tweeting phone to phone. Subscribe to a group and be informed. People could record a cut of a song and send it directly or just say hello to all your loved ones at once while on vacation. This is a legitimate idea that has widespread application.
3) This will quickly become one of the more downloaded apps. There were 15-20,000 people at the NYC protest last night. The protests are also sprouting up in over 10 different cities across the US. Then there will be people that just want to know what happening. An immediate wide audience to launch the application and gain publicity.
4) You will get mad props
Is there anyone out there who is willing to put in some time in helping to develop an application to help facilitate communication among protesters? This would have to be a free app at least until the protests are over. Preferably it would be both iOs and android compatible. Please let me know so we can talk through some ideas, specifics, timelines, and what not.
Also let me know if you think this is possible or not. Or if you have any other good ideas. Let’s get this moving.
ps - let's try to keep this from getting political. We do not need to argue about the protest here. If you are interested great help out, if not then just move on to the next thread. Thanks in advance.
LoL. Really? What are you end goals? What do you want changed? Who makes the rules?

I would love to talk to you about this, but this is not the right place for that discussion. Pm me if you actually have interest, I have real answers. I just know this forum was not made for this purpose so I won't do it here.
It would be very honorable for some Devs to spend a little bit of time on this. I could see this app on headlines. Would be a good way for some Dev to get exposure too.

Time to change things up

One of the problems I have with today's texting apps is that they are all essentially the same. Sure emoticons and group conversations are fun, but there is limited flexibility with what you can and can not do. For example, why can't we customize text layouts, embed youtube videos into our conversations, etc.
I came up with a solution by creating a basic, elementary texting app without any of the perks. What I want to do is get as much feed back as possible to build out the texting app that people want to use. Once users see that we take their ideas and implement them into the app, they will be more excited to share it with their friends.
So if anyone is interested in creating their own app, download Skoop Messenger in google play and let me know what you think. Check out the Skoop Messenger Facebook page for details.
Not sure I understand what you are proposing
that isn't already handled by email and/or IM?
looks a lot like the other sms/text apps out there already. not sure whats different.
There's a very good reason that they're all essentially the same and that's because of the age old saying -
If it's not broke, don't fix it!

With generic things like texting, the majority of people don't like change. Texting on phones is nice and simple and if too many features are added, texting will become much harder work than it needs to be.

I would like to see a talk to text app that actually works good, with the option to talk letters instead of words, another option would be like Xbox 360 where you can leave a voice message or video message, all in the same app, Maybe a way to customize and use a graphic signature instead of a text signature. Changing font of texts or colors, stuff like that I can see being used. Maybe having some music in the background when you are reading or have a text message open. A translater built in to the app, so if someone sends you a message in Chinese, you can press a button and the text then converts in english. Just throwing some ideas out there.
I don't buy into that " if it a broke dont fix it" Where would we be today if we did not constantly look to improve things? Probably in a cave beating each other over the heads with clubs and worshipping fire. This thread was started becuase someone asked for ideas on improving text messaging and all the responses have been anti-productive. Use your imagination people.

Mine wasn't anti-productive. It was truthful.
Off-topic - Even if we were still cave people, would that really be a problem? Of course not, because we'd be used to that. Yeah, mankind strides to improve things, but at lot of the time, the situation with this thread included, it's not needed.

Relax guys.
I have to agree with both. If it's not broken in any way, why fix it - it might cause problems there weren't there in the first place. The main reason something is popiular is because it works. But then again, there's always room for improvement/innovation, right? I mean, that's how we got our devices now.
On topic: i can't find the app.
Sorry for butting in. It's just my opinion.

[B]Update 20140430 - v1.2.6[/B]
[LIST]
[*]You can now add a direct link on the homescreen to any of your forums. It will behave just like having a stand alone forum app, completely bypassing the forum listing screen. This required the Install Shortcut permission.
[*]Forum elements now have sort of a shaded box theme to them. I think it looks a little nicer, but if people don't like it I can revert back to the old look, or make it optional.
[*]Got rid of the cartoon looking default avatar icon.
[*]Improvements to post link, quote, and other BB code handling.
[*]Forum topics listing now has an infinite scroll (at least until there are no topics left), kind of like the news feeds in Facebook and Twitter apps
[*]The left slideout menu has been rearranged and now contains navigation links such as forum index, subscriptions, unread topics, etc
[*]Added a quick popup tip on how to log in when you enter a forum as a guest
[*]Changed the language on the forum listing screen input box to make it more apparent that a URL is the required input
[*]Forum settings have been moved out of the sliding menu and on to their own screen.

I just tried it and it's a good start. It needs some work like labelling. Right now, it's just a box with the word "Add". Need a tutorial or something to guide the user into what or how to get into a forum. Right now, I had to guess and put the entire web address in the box. The key at the bottom needs a label. Even something as simple as "login" or something. I'm no IT/Tech expert but I can get around and figure stuff out. Not everyone is tech savvy so they need a little guidance.
Need a way to access favorite forums. XDA, for example, is a large forum. People don't like to scroll through every phone or tablet to find their forum.
Hopefully, this helps a little. I don't want to sound critical but these are things you need to know.
Taptalk is the gold standard right now but I like competition so good luck.

THANK YOU this is the kind of feedback I'm looking for
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Forum Fiend v1.2.5.
I've been looking for something to replace Tapatalk, and I've looked at FF a few times. Figuring out how to get a forum loaded was confusing. The only way I figured out how to get on to XDA was happening to see it on the Play Store pictures. Logging in was a bit awkward too. When I saw the key at the top, I figured it was a link to purchase a pro version or something.
Most of all though, the look of it kept me from switching over. It feels dated. From the default cartoon avatars before logging in to a forum and icons, to the font and colors, it just feels a little off, although the action bar looks fine. I also feel like the slide out navigation is sort of wasted on the settings menu and active users, neither of which I use much. They might be better suited for faster navigation, search, showing subscribed forums/topics.
The number 1 reason, though, that I am looking for a Tapatalk replacement is the ability to bypass the forum selection page since I only use XDA. If it could detect that only one forum is present and automatically enter that one when opening the app, that would be legit.
Sorry to seem like I was going on and on. I think it has good potential, and some easy-ish fixes can make a world difference.

Thanks, this is good feedback. I have read other comments in the market also saying the interface looks dated, but I am not entirely sure what a more modern interface looks like. Do you consider the general look and feel of Tapatalk to be a good example of modern, that I can use as a guide to work off of?
As for automatically going to a specific forum, that would certainly be easy to add. I was thinking of letting users place icons for their specific forums on their homescreen, so they could launch each forum just as they would a stand alone app. They would probably be widgets technically, but could look just like a normal app icon.

A holo interface would be nice keeping in time with current Google design and the majority of apps that currently being published.

Can you pleae explain what else is tracked and how?
I appreciate the fact you asked for the voice of community. I guess it's somewhat vital for application's life, if anything else for gaining people's attention. Anyway, first thing I noticed when I installed Forum Fiend (yeah, I installed Forum Fiend now for the first time) was the fact that you need to manually enter forum server's URL. It's not a major PITA, but perhaps it would be nicer if it was done the Tapatalk way. The design is quite up-to-date IMHO, but as Jesellers88 said, default icons are cute, but kind of unprofessional, I'm afraid.
Also, BBCode support is a quite handy feature which Tapatalk does not offer (kudos!), but a full-fledged editor with preview, code and other stuff depending on what each forum allows would be even better, though Tapatalk offers nothing.
To summarize: Forum Fiend is quite a nice application, but above mentioned suggestions (mine and from others in this thread) would bring it to perfection, I suppose. This post was intended to be a constructive critique and in no manner something intended to offend your work. I'm not an application developer or anything alike so this is my two cents .
Seems really interesting. Will certainly keep an eye on this project.
nice work. one issue encountered: app crashes when using "Last Page" function on a 1 page post. probably want to handle that better.

Yes sure, I use Google Analytics to track page views, and also I track an event each time a server connection is made (server URL only, no other information is tracked).
I also send server connection information (again, URL only) to a database at my website, so that in the future I can implement a "most popular" forums section.
I see someone saw my comment.
Thank you thank you thank you. I can't stand the Tapatalk app. You have my thanks and full support!

Thanks for the feedback. A preview mode for the BBCode editor would certainly be easy to accomplish, so I will probably be adding that in there.
The primary reason I do not have a forum listing/browsing option like Tapa, is that I do not have access to Tapa's massive forum database (at least, not that I know of). I agree that it sucks having to manually type in the server address though. To try to somewhat get around this, I have been logging which servers are being accessed from the app (server address only, no personal info), and plan on adding a "most popular servers" list, or some other way to browse. It is the best I can come up with for the time being though :-/ If anybody has suggestions on better ways to implement this though, I am open to any ideas!

Thanks, with time and work I hope to be able to rival or surpass the quality of the official app.

Thanks. The reason I started this project, and the reason I lost faith in Tapatalk, is because I had previously bought their "pro" app. Then they downgraded it to a free app and released another paid pro version. I wanted something that works without getting nickeled and dimed!

I don't mind paying if it works. Tapatalk is awful.
