I am looking at purchasing the UK version with BP and ECG and currently have a A52 phone to work with it.
I currently use a Fitbit Charge 4 but really need a device with ECG. Anyone coming from a Fitbit or Garmin or other device with good sleep tracking care to comment on how close the GW4 compares? From the reviews and comments under the reviews it looks like there might be some bad batches of GW4's out there in the wild that are not performing as good as some others?
The sleep tracking on GW4 (same as in previous models like GW3 etc) is Not good. It mainly misses most the deep sleep cycle. I've also had Fitbit before and it seemed better. The best sleep tracker is the Oura ring which I also use and sometime compare with the GW4, which again fails to track deep sleep

Try using Sleep as Android (works with both Tizen and WearOS). Not sure if they've optimized for GW4 yet, but I find Sleep as Android very comparable to Oura - deep sleep metrics are a very inexact science, but agree Samsung watch algorithms do that poorly.
The other nice thing about Sleep as Android is it also graphs SpO2 (again, not sure they've added support for GW4 yet) and HRV. So the only metric missing from that equation is temperature (which can be very useful) that Oura does do.
I am using a beta version of sleep as android created especially for GW4 support. You can check if the update is live yet or also join their beta program.

Hello @sonofanut, I think you are right. Google did just removed the Sleep as Android Wear OS app from the Play Store… This is part of their “rising the quality bar” initiative. The reason in the notice is we are not showing the the time of the next alarm on the tracking screen… The reason for...

You might want to start a thread if you are having issues as you will defiantly get more responses.
Anyone check if the sleep tracking has improved any with the latest firmware/software updates to the GW4?
Also is anyone using the ECG feature? That is one of the main features I need as I have heart palpitations on a regular bases but of course whenever I go the doctors it never occurs so its not something they can ever see on a machine and would like to try and catch it on the GW4 when I have an episode to see what it is actually doing.

I may have a lemon S2 Classic. 24 hours in and there are 3 relatively bad issues:
- Pedometer step counter does not work AT ALL. Wore watch all day and it shows I took *zero* steps.
- Heartbeat measuring is a major fail. Click the icon, and the resulting curve is erratic & all over the place. Never even locks on a heart rate and eventually gets to a "try again" button every single time.
- I have display set to always on. After a few seconds, it reverts to a plain black display with clock hands only. No other features. I can live with that, but wait a few minutes more and the screen goes completely black until I touch it or shake it to wake it back up.
I'm hoping someone can point out tips that mean some of this stuff is just user error, but I've spent a ton of time combing the settings both inside the watch as well as inside the phone app. HTC One M9, by the way, and the BT paired without a problem. Thinking Best Buy is about to get a watch returned! Thoughts on what I'm missing?
Sounds like you have a bad unit. My steps have been as accurate as any other wearable I've used. The heart rate monitor is excellent (you need to wear it snug though)... I can't comment on the ambient display as I don't use it

I think You should return it - the problems You mentioned don't occur on my S2c.
The pedometer is not perfect, at least not before You make more than ~10 steps. If less, the smartwatch is not recording it (as far as I read, it suppose to work like that, cause devs implemented it to be 'eco-energy' and not start recording with every move). But in daily use it works fine for me.
Heartbeat sensor should record fine, maybe the grip on the belt is to loose? Try to make some activity with sHealth and observe if the sensor records anything.
About display - if You choose from settings 'always on' it WILL show only plain black display with clock hands. That's how it suppose to work If You are interested in having the face always turned on then look in the Store for 'I am Alive' app.
I just got the Gear S2 - I've been using the LG Urbane and wanted to try Tizen.
One thing I've noticed is that on the Urbane and Android wear - the Ambient mode is the exact same as the active mode - just a bit dimmer but looks the exact same at all times.
I can't seem to find very many faces through Tizen with anything other that two black and white hands in ambient mode or just a basic look.
Is there an issue with Tizen not being able to offer this ?
I want my watch face to be seen by other people looking down at my watch when I don't know they're looking.
I don't want the face to be shown just when I lift my arm - I want the look always.
This "always on" option will also make developers created faces then seen by others with the same watch in passing and they'll ask what that watch face is leading to potentially more purchases and downloads. -- grass roots marketing
I love the watch so far, but the lack of ambient mode looking just like active mode is about a deal breaker for me.
Any thoughts or suggestions here, before I return it and stick with my Urbane and having the watch face I choose always on ?
I've only been able to find about six (6) faces that have a similar look to the active mode when in ambient and it's still no where near as good as Android Wear's look with the Ambient mode option.
The Tizen ambient is only similar -
With all the face options to choose from when we decide on one for the day as watch owners - we want the face to be there always not just when I lift my wrist - I want to show off the look I decided to use.
This bother anyone else ?

There are several reasons for this. 1) Battery life. By reducing colors and the number of pixels that are activitated, it allows the watch to go several days without charge. 2) OLED burn in. OLED displays will "burn in" if pixels activated too long.
However, there are several options one is the "Alive" app on the Gear store. Install this and your watch never goes into ambient mode. Free app. Problem solved. However, you will have shorter battery life. YMMV.

Not true, maybe an exception on your face, very very very.... few face has same dim mode than active mode on Wear. Worse, for example on LG-R Dim mode brightness has no setup and most time dim mode is brighter than active mode, so totally grazy
OP, check this thread for Gear S2 watchfaces that have more than the basic ambient mode...

This is incorrect.
Ambient mode on both platforms is a part of the watchface design -- it has as much, or as little detail as the designer put in it.
There are plenty of Wear faces that reduce to simple 2 B/W hands in ambient. Try the Bang & Olufsen watch face, for example.
For the time you would spend sorting through the Samsung store to find a good ambient face, you could create your own with Gear Watch Designer. That way you could include pretty much whatever you want in the ambient face.
Ambient mode seems to use a lot of battery. Mine drops from 100% to about 30% in 16 hours on ambient mode, making nightly recharging a must. And, I'm not a power user.

I have a very intricate ambient mode and I have it always on, and I get 2 days on a full charge. I only have bluetooth on. I do not have WiFi on. If you have WiFi on, or if you have a 3G, that's what's eating your battery.

So apparently on Samsungs official news site , the AOD display has a sensor that will disable the AOD when it's placed inside a pocket or a bag (Why would your watch be in your pocket or bag instead of your wrist?). You would think this would also work if say you're wearing a long sleeve shirt. I have been unable to trigger this via long sleeve shirts and I don't have thin enough clothing to test the pocket, nor do I own a bag to test.
"The device’s 3-inch circular Super AMOLED display has a resolution of 360 x 360. Its 16 million colors, full color Always On Watch continuously shows the time rather than fading to black. The ambient light sensor helps to adjust the brightness of displayed information and works to automatically disable the Always On Watch when users can’t see the screen, such as when the watch is in a pocket or a bag. Users can opt to personalize their Always On Watch with customizable, interactive watch faces."

Someone already posted on the forums about how their AOD wasn't working, and they found out it was because their strap was blocking their wrist from making contact with the sensor. I'm guessing that the heart rate sensor didn't sense a pulse and turned off the screen completely, or some other sensor all together.
Here's the link:

My AOD works just fine. But it will not turn off when sleeping or covered. It senses my heartbeat just fine. Perhaps my unit is defective? How did you get it to turn it when sleeping, anything special?

Nothing special. My Classic began to track my sleep automatically out of the box. After I wake up, I press a button or rotate the bezel then put in my pin. Shortly afterwards, I get an alert on the watch and it shows in numbers & a graph how long I slept and also shows me how long I was motionless, how long I had a little bit of movement, and how long I was restless.
When the watch is simply covered up by my longsleeve shirt or a jacket, my AOD doesn't turn off.

It won't turn off AOD with long sleeves, because it knows you're wearing it. It only turns off if it's NOT on your wrist. Or when you're sleeping.
Did anyone install the new PK7 watch update on their Gear S3? Any issues with AOD? Like AOD not working or turning off despite the AOD setting being on?

I just got my Frontier today, and I came here now looking for answers on the AOD feature i have been hearing about but have not witnessed as of yet... My watch goes completely black every time after about 4 to 5 second of inactivity. Like i said i was coming here now to XDA to find out if this was a config problem or what?? Two things I have seen here that may be an issue for me, 1 - i always wear long sleeve shirts, and 2 - i have always had trouble with the smart watch heart rate monitors getting a good pulse on my wrist. (This is my 5th smartwatch, 4th samsung) I did do all of the updates today when initially using watch. I have been wearing it about 8 hours. Hope this helps.

Also, it won't work if the watch isn't on your wrist.

"Samsung Flaunt" is a widget you can install, i installed it on mine (you have to select it from widget once installed) as i found certain faces i have time out into a default (black face white hands and red second hand) i didnt want this, i wanted a face of my selection be it downloaded or a pre-installed face to remain on at all times especially if i go out, if you select the "Frontier" face (pre-installed) and have AOD Turned on you lose very little in quality / dimming when the time out kicks in, with "Samsung Flaunt" you install the widget and this then allows you to have the watch face on for up to 30 mins, However it will eat your battery, but then i can live with day to day charging, I like the idea of going out for a meal or a beer with pals and my face being on, i like the idea of a smart watch simulating a "real" watch look, as we all know there are thousands of faces we can select to show off.
S1CAR1US you can change the time out by going settings/Display/Screen Timeout/ then theres a choice of 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute or 5 minutes, if you select the desired time out, and go back to your normal face, by clicking your bezel one click left (notifications) and one click right (watch face) your face should remain on for that length of time, if this isn't long enough (wasn't for me) i used the "Samsung Flaunt" widget.

Would be very useful, but it is not possible.
I mean you can't set it in system settings, but it is possible to use a "complication" in Gear Watch Designer.
I designed a couple of watch faces setting a complication to turn off AOD every night, was very simple.

I'm loving my new gear sport especially with the look, speed of operation and battery life for a full colour display due thanks to Tizen ecosystem. I have been looking for ages for some way to have an alarm when my heart rate goes over say 150bpm. I would like it to be persistent until my heart rate drops below that level again. I did find an app called heartby which does pretty much just what I want except for when the screen times out and it no longer sends me alarms. I have tried to contact the developer, but haven't had a reply yet. I understand that the watch isn't meant to be relied on for any medical condition and don't have a heart condition but this would really help me out. Does anybody know of an app which I could use or a system setting that might achieve this. At the moment I use the other workout option in samsung health. I Just changed my age to an age which will give me the maximum heart rate I want as the zones can't be manually set up but it isn't persistent.
After a long period of time, researching all over the internet & talking to Samsung, I now finally have an app that gives me a warning when my heart rate goes over a set amount. I can program the notification value, vibration intensity & amount of vibrations using the gear watch without having to be connected to anything else.
"Heart Rate Graphic" by Igor Cherneyshov is well worth installing on your gear watch. It's even free. If you want heart rate notification, install this app. Been looking since December for this basic feature.
Thx for your answer Fipoly, i am looking for an app measuring low or irregular heart rate, alarming - messaging/calling contacts/assistance....
I use the SOS feature where you press the bottum button x3 with a 5sec countdown. Don't think you'll find an automatic way of doing it. You can user Monitor by appyhapps for low HR but nothing for irregular as the watch isn't accurate enough.
I'm finding HR graphics is chewing up my battery since the tizen 4.0.0.2 update. Hoping for a fix soon.
I need a vibration warning when my heart rate goes over a specified rate. Can you let me know if you find something.
I just found this app and going to try it out. Unfortunately it costs around $1 but don't mind paying for an app that does what we want. I will update this after I've tried it for a while.
HR monitor plus
By Roger van Hout
Unfortunately the app only works while the screen is on with it displayed. It stops monitoring HR when screen is off or app is in background.
Have contacted designers, but no one has emailed me back at this stage
After time, somehow the heart rate graphic app is now working better on my watch. There was no update of the watch or the app but somehow is gone back to the battery usage I used to get. It's a stand alone app on the watch so should and does use less power than others I've tried. I love the customisable amount of vibrations that you get as you know without doubt that your heart rate is too high and will repeat until your heart rate is back to an acceptable value. The only downfall is it doesn't have a minimum heart rate warning but the more I think about it, I realise that I don't really need it myself.
I was able to get a full day out of the watch with the heart rate graphic running. Still don't know why I only got a few hours with the same phone settings and apps running before, so hopefully the problem doesn't come back.
I only bought the watch originally to get a warning when I went tachycardic without having a non watch looking monitor on my wrist or having to wear a chest strap, so was so frustrated until I found heart rate graphic.
Hi,
I've only just got my GW4 (after upgrading from the original GW). One thing i noticed is that although i have heart rate set to "Measure continuously", it doesn't seem to work on watch faces i downloaded from the play store. On those faces it rarely seems to update and i often have to press the icon on the face to get it to update manually. This used to work on the original Tizen GW. Is this a bug or deliberate? Is there any workaround ?
Hello,
From what I have read, watch faces has its own method for reading the HR, who is not correlated with the Samsung Health HR setting.
Creators can set the update interval and normally they put an interaction to manually trigger the measurement.
I never work with watch faces, but I think it's possible to create one with a lower interval period.
This is a question that I also had because all of the watch faces that arent from Samsung has this annoying issue and the other watch faces from Samsung aren't even available which sucks. I thought someone would have been able to create some work around since it was based on android now.
I am using the I-Digit watch face and continuous monitor works on it, but you have to have the AOD enabled. The setup app told me this, so I turned it on and it works just fine. You mite try that on the watch face you are trying.
